n Ghasem Ahangari’s major research interest is the expression ofgenes upon the environmental interaction of an organism.Environmental factors disturbing the dialog between the neuro- andimmune system result in imbalance or complex disorders. Heinvestigates the interaction between the immune and theneuropsychological system in disorders such as asthma, autoimmunity, cancer in individuals who had been exposed to air pollution.Particularly, he quantified changes in gene expression ofneurotransmitter receptors on blood cells, in particular T cells. Heexpanded his research to include neuropsychological changesassociated with stress factors. As principal investigator of severalgrants he found effective changes of neurotransmitter receptors andother factors relevant to these receptors. Based on the changes ofexpression of these receptors in different diseases he targeted them viaspecific agonistic or antagonistic drugs. In addition, he successfullytreated tumor cells (lung and breast cancer) with specific drugs toinduce apoptosis.
