The man turned. His eyes widened. His briefcase

clattered to the floor and littered the street with

paper, but he didn’t run. Shock kept his feet

planted. Danny lunged and pinned him to the

ground.

Just as he was about to clamp his jaws around

his victim’s neck, their eyes met. Danny saw the

fear in them, the hopelessness. In their tear-filled

sheen he saw his own. They were the glowing,

yellow eyes of a killer.

He stopped. The trance was broken. It was as if

he had just woken from a deep sleep. He could feel

himself changing. His muscles deflated. His claws

disappeared under his fingernails. His hairs pulled

back into his skin.

“I’m sorry,” he said. His voice was a growl, still

half wolf.

He ran off into the night without looking back.

2 Using the headings below, find examples of what makes one answer more effective than the other.

●● It removes specific examples.●● It removes descriptive detail.●● It ignores irrelevant additional details.●● It combines different examples into larger points.

Developing skills

Writers will often develop their ideas by adding anecdotes. An anecdote is a short story to exemplify or back up the writer’s point. For instance:

I really don’t like cats; they scare me. If I see one coming I run. Well okay, I step hesitantly backwards and wait for them to pass, never losing eye contact with their slinky panther-like frames. They’re mysterious, aloof creatures. Give me a soppy canine anytime. One look at its face and you know it all: ‘keep away, I’m not in the mood’ or ‘yes, yes, yes, let’s play now!’ It all started when I was

a small child and I was left in the garden on my own. Next door’s cat came walking up to me. It looked harmless enough; in fact it looked cuddly and kind, so I put my arms out and pulled it towards me. Yowl! It made a terrible noise, and swiped me across the cheek with its paw. I began to wail even louder than it had! So there you have it: the reason I hate our furry friends, in a nutshell.

3 What is the main point being made here? Where does the anecdote start and finish?

Sometimes you will need to use your own words, rather than the writer’s, to answer a question concisely.

4 Write the following phrase into your own words. In particular think about using alternative verbs and adjectives.

It looked harmless enough; in fact it looked cuddly and kind.

Applying skills

5 Answer the following question on the passage above. Remember to summarise concisely, using your own words, and to group ideas together in longer complex sentences.

How does the writer feel about cats and why?

●● To develop the skills to identify and select precisely what is relevant for an answer.

Learning objectives

Selecting information3Never include descriptive detail, examples, anecdotes or quotations in a short answer or response to a Summary question.

Top tip

Jack Petchey decided to build the club because one day he was out for a walk and the view reminded him how lovely it was on the beach and in the sea and he wanted other people to be able to do it too so they needed somewhere to stay.

●● You usually select the precise information needed to answer a question.

●● You mostly use synonyms and your own words to achieve a concise answer.

●● You always select the precise information needed to answer a question.

●● You always use synonyms and your own words to achieve a concise answer.

Targeting Grade C Targeting Grade A

Once you have got the gist of a text (skimmed) and identified where the information that you need is (scanned), you will have to select exactly what you need to use in an answer.

Exploring skills

You need to make sure that you are selecting only the most relevant information to include in your answer.

1 Read the following question and extract. Then identify the unnecessary material in the sample answers below.

Name two aspects of Portugal that Jack Petchey wanted others to experience.

In 1970 45-year-old Jack Petchey stood on a hilltop overlooking one of the most beautiful bays on Portugal’s Algarve and envisaged a time when people would come and marvel at the same view, walk on those white-gold sands and swim in that perfect sea – and they would do it all from the comfort of a luxury holiday resort complex.

Leisure Magazine

Petchey wanted people to have his experience of the white-gold sands and to swim in the perfect sea. He wanted them to ‘marvel at the view’.

Petchey liked the hill above a lovely bay and the amazing view that he was enjoying so he wanted to share it.

Building skills

Look at the answers to the following question.

What made Jack Petchey decide to build Club Praia da Oura?

Jack Petchey decided to build the club because he enjoyed that part of the Algarve coast and he wanted other people to be able to enjoy it too.

Simply copying out whole sentences will often mean that you lose marks in a Summary response where being concise and using your own words is important, or in a Directed writing response where you need to adapt material to a new purpose.

Exploration

Getting started

1 In pairs, brainstorm all the explorers you can think of. Then answer the following questions, writing short notes.

●● Which explorers do you think have made the most dangerous journeys?

●● What discoveries did they make?●● What dangers do you think they faced?●● What do you think the people back home thought about

their travels?

2 Read the quotations below from explorers explaining their reasons for their expeditions. In pairs discuss the following questions for each quote with a partner.

●● What qualities do you think these explorers had?●● What do you think made them want to do these things?

‘‘ I seemed to vow to myself that some day I would go to the region of ice and snow and go on and on till I came to one of the poles of the earth, the end of the axis upon which this great round ball turns.’’Ernest Shackleton 1874–1922

‘‘ When I was but a little child, I had already a strong desire to see the world. Whenever I met a travelling-carriage, I would stop involuntarily and gaze after it until it had disappeared.’’Ida Pfeiffer 1797–1858 from ‘A Visit to Iceland and the Scandinavian North’

‘‘ But in truth, should I meet with gold or spices in great quantity, I shall remain till I collect as much as possible, and for this purpose I am proceeding in quest of them.’’Christopher Columbus 1451–1506

‘‘ Never, if possible, cover any road a second time.’’Ibn Battuta 1303–1365

‘‘ All adventures, especially into new territory, are scary.’’Sally Ride 1951 – astronaut

Exploring the skills

Often when you read you need pick out only the relevant details or information in order to do a particular task. Remember to:

●● read the question carefully

●● read headings carefully

●● identify key words and information

●● ignore personal opinions

3 You are going to read a passage about a great Chinese explorer who set off on a series of amazing expeditions from 1405 to 1433.

Read the text quickly and look at the pictures. What paragraph would you read to find out about:

●● the ships used for the voyages?●● the aims of the exploration?●● where Zheng He went?

A Chinese armadaSix centuries ago, half a century before the first Europeans, a mighty armada of Chinese ships crossed the China Sea, then ventured west to Arabia, and East Africa. The fleet consisted of up to 300 giant ships, escorted by dozens of supply ships, water tankers, ships to transport cavalry horses, and patrol boats. The armada’s crew totalled more than 27,000 sailors and soldiers.

Reasons for the voyageThe object of the voyages was to display the glory and might of the Chinese Ming dynasty. Loaded with Chinese silk, porcelain, and lacquerware, the junks visited ports around the Indian Ocean from East Africa to Indonesia to trade. Here, Arab and African merchants exchanged the spices, ivory, medicines, rare woods, and pearls so eagerly sought by the Chinese imperial court.

Details of Zheng He’s voyagesOn his first trip in 1403, Zheng He visited Vietnam and reached the port of Calicut, India. On his return, he battled pirates.

Zheng He’s fourth and most ambitious voyage in 1414 went to the Persian Gulf and brought back a giraffe from the Kingdom of Bengal as a gift to the emperor.

4 Reread the last paragraph and complete the table.

Knowledge checK✓ Know the arrangement, movement and energy of the particles in the three states of

matter: solid, liquid and gas;✓ Understand how the course of a reaction can be shown in an energy level diagram;✓ Be able to write and interpret balanced chemical equations.

learning objectives✓ Understand what is meant by the term ‘rate’;✓ Know how the rate of different reactions can be altered by changing the surface area

of solids, the concentration of solutions, the pressure of gases, temperature and with a catalyst.

✓ Be able to describe experiments to investigate changes in the rates of reactions;✓ Be able to use a simple collision theory to explain how the rate of reaction can

be altered and understand the significance of a reaction’s activation energy.

What happens in chemical reactions?A chemical change, or chemical reaction, is quite different from the physical changes that occur, for example, when sugar dissolves in water.

One or more new substances are produced.

In many cases an observable change is apparent, for example the colour changes or a gas is produced.

An apparent change in mass can occur. This change is often quite small and difficult to detect unless accurate balances are used. Mass is conserved in a chemical reaction – the apparent change in mass usually occurs because one of the reactants or products is a gas.

An energy change is almost always involved. In most cases energy is Ch

em

ist

ry

released and the surroundings become warmer. In some cases energy is absorbed from the surroundings and so the surroundings become colder. Note: Some physical changes, such as evaporation, also produce energy changes.

collision theoryFor a chemical reaction to occur, the reacting particles (atoms, molecules or ions) must collide. The energy involved in the collision must be enough to break the chemical bonds in the reacting particles – or the particles will just bounce off one another.

A collision that has enough energy to result in a chemical reaction is an effective collision.

Some chemical reactions occur extremely quickly (for example, the explosive reaction between petrol and oxygen in a car engine) and some more slowly (for example, iron rusts over days or weeks). This is because they have different activation energies. Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy required in a collision for a reaction to occur. As a general rule, the bigger the activation energy the slower the reaction will be at a particular temperature.

rate of a reactionA quick reaction takes place in a short time. It has a high rate of reaction. As the time taken for a reaction to be completed increases, the rate of the reaction decreases. In other words:

rate α 1time

rates of reaction

Some chemical reactions take place extremely quickly, for example when petrol is ignited it combines with oxygen almost instantaneously; reactions like these have a high rate. Other reactions are much slower, for example when an iron bar rusts in the air; reactions like these have a low rate. Chemical reactions can be controlled and made to be quicker or slower. This can be very important in situations like food production, either by slowing down or

increasing the rate at which food ripens, or in the chemical industry where the rate of the reaction can be adjusted to an optimum level.

The study of employment figures gives you a great opportunity to practice a number of skills for presenting and interpreting date, such as pie charts; divided bar graphs and triangular graphs. This section shows how this can be done using the information from figure C.

Pie charts are a very good way of quickly comparing this information and visually checking for major differences.

Pie charts showing industrial employment

E

Over to youDraw pie charts for two of the other countries listed. Describe the differences shown across all five charts.

Now have a try at producing the same pie charts on a computer.

LEDCs, especially the poorest ones, tend to have a very high proportion of people working in agriculture as subsistence farmers. As countries develop, this proportion changes. One way in which this process of industrial development takes place is shown in figure A.

Figure B shows the effects of asuch development on the employment structure of the USA during the twentieth century. Figure B shows countries such as Nigeria and Afghanistan that still have a high number of agricultural workers but the percentages are falling in China, India, Bangladesh and Brazil. South Africa has low numbers while in the United Kingdom and the USA the service sector is by far the biggest employer.

The informal sectorUnfortunately, many LEDCs are not developing quickly enough. This means that, despite the loss of farming jobs, there is not enough industrial employment for all those that need it. Unemployment rates can be very high. Underemployment (where people have some, but not enough work) is also a problem. This has led to the growth of the informal sector.

People with informal jobs do not get a regular wage but work when they need to, perhaps by selling goods on street corners or beaches, washing cars or shining shoes (figure D).

Changing countries, changing workAgricultural employment increases as technology means less workers

are needed on the land.

Ex-farmworkers get jobs in factories and secondary industry increases.

Factories become more efficient and need fewer workers.

Remaining workers become more

highly skilled and better paid.

Exports increase as countries overseas demand products made

by the factories.

Factories employ bigger management, sales and research teams to help

increase exports further.

PRACTICAL

SESSION 5

PRACTICAL

SESSION 55

Unit 2 Input and output devices Session 5 Internet research

BackgroundA good presentation requires relevant information and images, suitable for audience and purpose. The Internet provides access to millions of pages, documents, images and descriptions that can help when researching any project, but deciding where to start looking and what keywords to use can be daunting. In order to produce the presentation in this unit you will need to search for images and technical information on input and output devices. In this session you will look at the following:

●● Choosing a search engine ● Using advanced searches

●● Using basic searches ● Downloading files and images

●● Using specific websites

Search EnginesThere are many search engines available but they all perform a similar task; searching for content based on the words you enter. Here are a few popular search engines.

www.google.com www.yahoo.com www.ask.com

Most search engines will also help narrow down your results from the start by allowing you to choose the type of information you require.

Ranging from images, news and shopping to videos and books. Targeted searches can be carried out without extra search terms.

How many different search engines are you, your friends and family aware of? Which are the most popular and why?

Activity 1

Basic searchesKeywords are essential for any basic search and they can often be used to find information quickly. For example an input device that will appear in your presentation is a mouse. A simple search will quickly produce information and images. Unfortunately not all the results may be relevant to your school work.

Carry out single term searches using the following ICT words:

Mouse Keyboard Speaker Chip Memory

Are the results you find always relevant to ICT and if not what do they refer to? Discuss with a friend the advantages and disadvantages of basic searches?

Activity 2

Advanced search techniquesMore specific searches require more specific questions. There are many words that have two or more meanings or are so common that a simple search produces millions of results.

Most search engines have an advanced search feature that allows more keywords to be entered to refine the search and produce more relevant results.

Using the mouse example an advanced search could be created as follows:

Keyword: mouse

Keyword: keyboard

Keyword: input

Keyword: device

Language: English

Unwanted keywords: mammal or animal

The first result from the search is a Wikipedia article on the history and technical specifications of a standard computer mouse.
