ITEMS OF INTEREST We CAN make a difference! New car on the horizon? Consider a hybrid or an electric.
EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DRIVE: Many residents are inquiring about how much to give to show our appreciation for our staff. This of course depends on personal circumstances. What can be shared is the results of the 2017 drive. Last year you generously gave $258,000 to provide individual checks to 250 staff who care for us. Also, please remember there may be tax advantages for your generosity. The Residents Association is a 501.c3, a non-profit organization. You can also consider using part of your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA or retirement plan account. You can avoid paying tax on that portion of your RMD if you have the check made out to Collington Residents Association for the EAF. Contact the custodian of your IRA or look up Required Minimum Distribution on the IRS website (irs.gov) for more information. You may make your donation by check made out to the Residents Association (memo line to the Employee Appreciation Fund) and place your envelope in the black box next to the door of the RA office. We are located on the third floor just past The Landing. Have questions? Ask your RA officers - Lois Brown, Nadine Hathaway, Sue Regen, Judy Collins or Linda Ewald. Thank you and please be generous!

(sometimes called the Bed-Mix Study) looked at the factors affecting us: our competitors in the area, the demographics of the population from which our residents come, and the trends in health and life care nation-wide. The study is done, and its author, Mike Kivov, shared its conclusions and findings with the Health Services Alliance in mid-October. The information was so interesting that we wanted to share it with everyone. Mike has agreed to come present to all residents in the Auditorium at 2PM on Monday, November 5. Don’t miss this chance to learn about the data that will guide our Collington improvement projects. ATTENTION COLLINGTON RESIDENT VETERANS OF ALL NATIONS: Prior to the 2018 annual Collington Veterans Davy Commemoration, we try to ensure that all Veterans are honored. Please follow these steps on a computer: VETERANS LIST ON RESIDENT ASSOCIATION WEB PAGE AT http://www.collingtonresidents.org Click on Resources – Resident Directory Veterans on left side of page, under Resources PASSWORD: collington - all lower case Please check to see if your name is on the page. If not on list, please contact John Geron to add your name: [email protected] List your name, military branch, dates of service and country. Repeating: the directory is password protected like all directories. THE FITNESS COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP: We are trying to assess the use of the equipment in the fitness room. This will help us to decide which pieces will need to be replaced before too long. Near the entry of the fitness room is a sign that asks you to sign in when you come to use the equipment. That applies to independent users as well as those who come for rehab. We know not everyone remembers to do so. So, one question is to all users: please sign in! We’ll also place next to it a sheet with the list of equipment and ask you to mark which piece(s) you have used or are going to use. We won’t be asking this forever, only for a limited period to get a reasonable estimate of the equipment use. We thank you for spending those few minutes to sign in and mark the equipment list. For the Fitness Committee, Jacob Kijne, chair.

VETERINARIAN AT COLLINGTON: Our Collington Veterinarian will be here on November 5. If you wish a doctor’s visit, you must call for an appointment. Call the Pet Committee Chair, Pat Kirkham and state why with enough information to give to the Vet, so your pet’s previous file(this does not apply to a new animal patient) and correct equipment can accompany both the Vet and her technician on the day of their visit. It is important to call for the appointment at least three days before so the number of animal patients can be known before-hand by the Vet team. In advance, my thanks and I await your call. - Pat Kirkham, x7292. MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE OO GLASS CASES: We need several more apartment residents to become members of the OO Glass Cases (GC) Committee. Living in the apartments, makes it easier to respond to the many calls we receive from people interested in seeing and hopefully buying something from the 2nd floor GC (by the Billiards Room) or the 3rd floor GC (in the Creighton Center by the Residents Association Office). As one of these volunteers, your name and telephone extension will be listed on the index cards displayed the GC. You will be oriented to the GC sales process. If interested, or want to learn more, please call RoAnne Dahlen-Hartfield at x7386 or put a note in my mail slot:105

FERAL CAT REMOVAL:
The following has been placed in our Courier at the request of Pat Kirkham Chair person and members of the Pet Committee, so that residents not in the 2000 District and/or those residents who do not have any of today’s technology but probably have heard about this happening on Tuesday October 23rd, might want to read.
Earlier today, at my direction, the place that the feral cat colony called home was removed. And efforts began to humanely trap and remove all feral cats on Collington’s campus.
In an email to Lois Brown this morning, I apologized for not giving her a heads up before today. I also mentioned in that email that I could not recall if I had previously spoken with Pat Howard, past RA President, about this some months ago. Since then Pat Howard has confirmed that I did NOT have such a conversation with there and I am certain she is 100% correct.
So, why did I take such a drastic and quick action? The feral cat colony has been, in my opinion, the third rail of Collington, even before I came to Collington in 2011. In fact, one of the first conversations I had with my predecessor, Lydia Pugh, was about the feral cat colony and how to best manage it. At that time, I believe there was a great deal of effort to manage the colony by spaying or neutering the cats and even providing rabies shots. My understanding is that it has been several years since this level of management was being done.
Be that as it may, 3‐4 years ago I had several rounds of discussions with interested parties (some in favor of the feral cats remaining and some in favor of them leaving). Through these conversations we came to an agreement that the feral cat population would be removed. At that time and still now, we got complaints from residents that perhaps quietly wanted to express their displeasure with the area.
With the agreement of removing the cats in place, we went about humanely capturing the cats. We were successful in some areas of the community but in the 2000s there were one or more residents that was removing or sabotaging the traps and thus making implementation of the removal plan nearly impossible.
Fast forward to today’s action. I can understand any anger that the zero‐notice generated. But I felt the need to do so because of past interferences with plans to remove the cats. This isn’t an excuse for taking an action that was clearly going to upset many residents. I only share this as context.
On an ongoing basis, we will be trapping and removing any feral cats found on the property. For cats that are owned by a Collington resident, it is worth noting that the pet policy requires cats to be kept indoors and therefore cats seem roaming about out of doors will be assumed to be feral.
I recognize this was quiet frankly, a mean thing to do. And I’m sure I will be seen in a not so good light by many residents. It would be insincere to express regret because I believe today’s action was necessary. But I do apologize for not giving RA Leadership and others the opportunity to help “soften the blow”.
Sincerely,
Marvell Adams
Executive Director
