History of Fermilab

● originally named the National Accelerator Laboratory

● On May 11, 1974, the laboratory was renamed ● Two major components of the Standard Model of

Fundamental Particles and Forces were discovered at Fermilab– the bottom quark (May-June 1977)

– top quark (February 1995).

– the first direct observation of the tau neutrino In July 2000
