Her recordincludes examples of Universal Design for Learning, assistive technology, video, podcasts, and training andmentoring others using her expertise in instructionaltechnology. Her online community building and sensitivity to those utilizing her course tools to create an active learning environment are well-documentedsuccesses. Students not only learn the material regarding cognitive impairments, which is one of herspecialty areas, but they learn how to utilize technologyin their own work as well. In the current educational environment, these abilities may be the key to not only teaching students, but also modeling for faculty the ways in which teaching continues to be influencedby technological advances.”

Every six years, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) conducts a thorough accreditation review of COE to assess the quality of the college’s programs. Since 1987, NCATE hasgranted COE national recognition as a quality teacher preparation institution. In February 2012, COEhosted the latest on-site NCATE accreditation visit. A team of six Board of Examiners members visitedcampus for three days to review all aspects of the college. Their final assessment on February 7 statedthat COE is qualified to retain national accreditation status.
Obtaining accreditation from NCATE is a lengthy, continuous process that involves all COE departments. In COE’s previous 2006 review, NCATE presented the college with three areas for improvement:
• Create a system to evaluate programs and teacher candidates.• Increase diversity in teacher candidates and school placements.• Expand awareness of COE’s mission and values.

NCATE
In 2008, Dr. Caryn King, associate dean of the college, was placed in charge of accreditation and assessment for COE. NCATE requires evidence of both quality and structure, which means faculty needto write detailed reports to explain the many elements of the college to NCATE’s Board of Examiners.Under King’s organization, faculty and staff collected data on programs from 2006 through 2012.
To ease the data collection process and help meet the first requirementfor improvement, COE’s database and technology specialist, JeffreyRollins, developed an online assessment system capable of evaluatingstudents each semester using course rubrics. Other features of Rollins’system include the ability to generate course and program-based reports, analyze performance over a length of time, and summarizecollected data into easily readable charts. During the 2012 NCATE review, the Board of Examiners was impressed with the assessmentsystem, indicating it is superior to those in most colleges since it is tailored to meet the specific needs of COE.
COE has been able to increase the diversity of teacher candidates by collaborating with organizations like W.K. Kellogg Foundation’sWoodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship and creating new initiatives, including the COMPASS program. (See page 10.) The Teaching Fellowship helps increase the diversity of COE by recruiting potential teachers interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics — areas identified as being in high demand in Michigan.

NCATE
Continued from page 8 The third area of focus was on the integration and communication of COE’s conceptual framework, which includes the college’s mission and values. COE created bookmarks and posters to showcase the conceptual framework to faculty, staff and students. In addition, instructors now incorporate the conceptualframework into their courses, connecting key values of the college to core concepts in programs. This ensures students not only know the mission of the college, but can also apply COE’s values in the classroom.
As can be seen in the evaluation chart (shown below), COE fully satisfied the requirements for all six NCATEstandards. In addition, NCATE did not note any areas of concern, although the Board of Examiners did offersuggestions for continuous improvement. This marks the first time in the history of COE that all six NCATEstandards were met without any concerns — an outstanding accomplishment for the college.

COMPASS PROGRAM
A new program at COE, called COMPASS, focuses on recruiting and assistingstudents from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in pursuing acareer in education. This includes students who are from urban school districts orrural districts with few resources. Preference is also given to Pell grant recipients(first-generation and low-income applicants). In June 2012, COMPASS was recog-nized by the Michigan College Personnel Association (MCPA) as an outstandingcollege program and awarded the MCPA’s Cultural Diversity Program Award.
Brian Johnson was hired in Fall 2011 to serve as program director. Working with a team of faculty and staff, Johnson developed and marketed the program to students throughout Michigan. Thirteen students began the COMPASS programin January 2012. Currently, students meet once a month on a Saturday to discussvarious paths to becoming an educator and discover GVSU’s student resources.
Students who meet admission requirements are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum of 30 students are allowed in a single cohort. Johnsonsees COMPASS as an inter-generational cycle. Students in the program are provided with the support they need to become effective educators. Once theyhave finished their teacher education, they have the potential to return to theircommunities and become role models for future generations. By continuing toempower communities through COMPASS and other education programs, COEserves as a leader in education and in promoting diversity.

DIVERSITY
Diversity in Films and Literature“THE FIRST GRADER”On February 20, College of Education’s Inclusion Committee hosted a showing of “The First Grader” in the Eberhard Center. Following the film, Chris Hanks, assistant professor, led a discussion about education in Kenya, featuring a presentation by Sheila Sewe and contributions from Genevieve Sabala, both former Kenyan students.
A winner of multiple awards at film festivals in 2010 and 2011, “The First Grader” is based on the true taleof Kimani Maruge, an 84-year-old Kenyan man who decided to enroll in first grade when Kenya announcedfree elementary education for all people in 2003.Maruge made world news as the oldest person onrecord to receive primary education, and the film reflects the struggle he went through to obtain his education. Weaving together scenes from Kenya’s often violent past under British colonization and moving depictions of present-day classrooms, the film explores the ties between education and freedom.
“The past is never dead,” says Hanks. “Wecannot bury conflicts in our history. It is onlyby embracing our past that we are able tolearn from our mistakes and move forward.”
While the film focuses on Maruge, we also see theplight of his teacher, Jane Obinchu (as portrayed by actress Naomie Harris). Hanks points out thatObinchu’s story is a prime example of how a teachercan affect lives, even those of nontraditional students.Obinchu is willing to sacrifice her time, reputation andeven her life as she fights to support Maruge’s quest for education. Her dedication challenges viewers, especially teachers, to consider what they would be willing to sacrifice for their students’ education.

“THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS”In coordination with GVSU’s Community Reading Project,COE’s Inclusion Committee hosted two book discussionson March 14 and 29 of Isabel Wilkerson’s “The Warmth ofOther Suns.” This Pulitzer Prize-winning book chroniclesthe Great Migration, a period in U.S. history from 1915 to1970. During this time, many African-Americans left theSouth to find new lives in northern and western states. By observing the lives of three people, Wilkerson exploresthis era of history and how the Great Migration ignitedchanges during subsequent decades.
“BULLY”Through collaboration with Grand Rapids CommunityFoundation, Kent Intermediate School District, WGVU-TV,Celebration! Cinema and other community partners, COEhosted a free showing and discussion of the documentary“Bully.” The event was held on April 19 at Celebration! Cinema North in Grand Rapids. “Bully” gained nationalrecognition in early 2012 when the Motion Picture Association of America initially gave the film an R rating, largely attributed to its graphic subject. With the endorse-ment of countless celebrities and communities across the U.S., the film’s rating was changed to PG-13. The filmshows audiences the devastating effects bullying has onlives and opens discussions on how we can prevent bullying in our communities.
