Note From Jeff

I want to personally thank each of you for attending CollegeLife’s annual Fall Summit! The goal of this weekend is to scale the peak of possibilities and look out onto a limitless landscape of ministry in order to gain a clear vision for where God intends to lead us this year. While summer vacation is nice for a season, my staff and I have grown increasingly restless for your return to Denton and to CollegeLife. I am both humbled and excited to communicate how we believe God is writing a new chapter of ministry and how He intends to author each one of you into the story.

During our time this weekend, I hope that you catch a vision for how God might use you through CollegeLife to take the gospel to the UNT and TWU campuses. You will learn of how we, as a ministry, intend to run along side you in that process beginning with moving Axcess back to the Lyceum in the heart of the UNT! In matter of days, countless students will flood our campuses, including more than 6000 freshmen! My prayer is that everything we do as a ministry will facilitate personal encounters that become starting points for an infinite number of gospel-centered possibilities.

Beginning this weekend, I hope that these possibilities will spark your imagination, your creativity and your passion for joining God in His mission on campus.

Peace,

Jeff

Dorm Move In’s

Campus Night

Casino Night

Sunday, August 23rd, 8 AMUNT Campus

Over 100 current College Life students will assist new students at UNT by helping them move into their residence halls. We’ll all be wearing the same color t-shirts. Dollies will also be available for use at each dorm.

Monday - Wednesday, August 24 -26thUNT Campus

For the first official night of First Flight, we’re going to seize the opportunity to connect with UNT students by encouraging all of our College Life folks to go to UNT’s events on campus. With countless events and activities, First Flight is a premium opportunity to meet new students before the craziness of the semester kicks in on Thursday!

Thursday, August 27th, 8 PMThe Silver Eagle Suites - UNT’s Student Union

This year, we are putting all of our eggs in one basket! Casino Night is moving from The Mill to the Silver Eagle Suites in UNT’s student union on the first night of school! Traditionally, CollegeLife hosts between 1500 and 2000 students at Casino Night but this year we hope to double that number! Every student will be back in town for classes! Every freshman will be moved into the dorms! Casino Night will be at the center of the UNT universe for a one-night [fake] gambling free-for-all with food and drink, musical performances, and prizes!

Growing Trends

University of North Texas

Texas Woman’s University

• UNT is currently the 4th largest university in the state of Texas (behind UT, A&M, and U of Houston) with nearly 34,000 students • UNT is the fastest growing major University in Texas (per capita) • 56% of UNT students are female, 44% male 68% of UNT is White, 12% African American, 11% Hispanic,

5% Asian

• Of all 1st time students at UNT – 51% are true freshmen, 49% transferred from another school • 16% of students live on campus, 84% commute in for classes (roughly 60% of those commuting from outside Denton) • UNT’s residential population is expected to climb from 3,900 (fall 2006) to 5,500 (fall 2007) • 93% of UNT students are from Texas (65% Dallas, 22% Ft. Worth, 7% Houston)

• While UNT is known for it’s Music & Art programs, the reality is 30% of UNT students are here for Arts & Sciences, 15% Business, 10.5% Education, 7% Communication, 6% Visual Arts, & 3% Music • There are over 60 religious organizations on the campus of UNT. Roughly 10 of those would be considered evangelical Christian. Only 5 of those are from a local church in the area. • Out of nearly 34,000 students at UNT, only about 4% are actively involved in solid, Gospel-centered, bible-teaching church • There are more students registered with the Albino Squirrel Preservation Society than there are in all UNT Christian Para-church organizations combined. They also happen to have the largest student organization on the UNT network for Facebook • Until College Life became an official organization at UNT in 1995, “GLAD” (gay & lesbian) held the record for the largest student organization on campus. • There are currently more Gay & Lesbian organizations at UNT than there are evangelical, local church college ministries

• TWU is the largest University in the nation primarily for women (with 11,500 students) • TWU is the 4th fastest growing University in Texas • TWU is the 3rd most diverse school in Texas & 24th most diverse school in the nation (with 38% of enrollment as minorities) • TWU is the 5th largest nursing school in the country

The Reality of College

Current Statistics:

Other Facts to Consider:

Top 10 Reasons Students Leave/Drop out of College:

People Who Never Earned a College Degree:

• 80% of all incoming freshman have yet to choose a major, even though they have already applied, been accepted, and have begun classes at college. • 50% of all collegians will not graduate at the same college they started at • 50% of all collegians will change majors at least once • The average tuition costs $13,833 a year • The average person graduates with over $15,000 of debt in student loans • 40% of students who enter into a 4-year degree plan, will not have graduated by the time year 6 rolls around

• College grads earn an average 62% more over the course of their careers than high school grads. But economist Robert Reischauer of the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., argues that those numbers are skewed by the fact that smarter kids are more likely to go to college in the first place. In other words, the profitability of higher education is a self-fulfilling prophecy. • Put $160,000--the approximate cost of a Harvard education--into municipal bonds that pay a conservative 5% interest, and you'll have saved more than $500,000 in 30 years. That's far more than the average college grad will accumulate in spendable profit during the same amount of time. • You might also argue, "But college isn't just about preparing for a career. It's about becoming more educated.” In theory, you're absolutely right. But because of the way colleges are run, much of what you learn in college is of little value to most students- i.e.… professors' idiosy cratic theories, unproven models, impenetrable literature, etc, often taught in auditorium-sized classes by professors hired and rewarded on how much research they crank out, not on how well they teach. Many students graduate from college feeling their academic experience has

1. Too much fun at the expense of classes and grades 2. A sense of not belonging; a sense of isolation, homesickness 3. Academically unprepared; burned-out on education 4. Financial constraints; low on funds 5. Personal family issues 6. Academic climate/fit 7. Choice of wrong major; major not offered 8. Lack of advising, guidance 9. Demands from part-time or full-time employment
