Director of Numeracy Update
Dear Families, Students and
Community Members,
We are fast approaching the end of
Term 4 and, rather than winding
down, there are many events and
programs still in full swing. The Head
Start program has begun for Year 11
students transitioning into Year 12,
the Year 10 exams are currently
underway, the Year 9 MEX City week
begins next week, Year 9 Advance
Surf Camp, the World Challenge
students heading to Vietnam with
Miss Leppin and teachers already
writing end-of-year reports and
planning programs for 2017. We
encourage all students to push to the
finish line and complete the year on a
successful note, to achieve their
personal best in all remaining classes
and assessment tasks and to prepare
for the challenges of 2017.
It’s Academic Mordialloc College held our annual
‘It’s Academic’ Challenge last Friday
involving our Middle School Captains,
our Year 7 students and seven of our
feeder primary schools. This year’s
challenge was a huge success and
we would like to thank all teachers,
schools and students involved.
Congratulations to Edithvale Primary
School for taking home the trophy
this year.
Year 8
Market
Day Y e a r 8
students have j u s t
completed their integrated project
“Marketing Madness” in which they
must design and construct a toy
based on market research,
incorporating electric circuits or
magnets and create a marketing
campaign to promote the purchase of
their toy to consumers. Market Day
was held on Monday in the EZ and
was a great success, with some of
the best toys we have ever seen
presented to staff, students and
parents. All who attended voted on
the best campaign and toy. The
results are being collated and will be
announced in the Year 8 assembly on
Monday next week. We would like to
congratulate all students on their
effort, their toys and presentations
and their group work in completing
their projects. We will be using their
toys as exemplars for many years to
come.

Year 7 Project Expo
On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 7 Project Expo
featuring museum exhibits on Ancient Mediterranean
societies that students have created was held in the
Learning Centre, also open to visitors. It was wonderful
observing students’ pride in their work and see some
creative and informative exhibits.
Maths News
Next year, we have reviewed and made changes to the
Year 10 Maths program to provide more targeted and
appropriate pathways for students, with there now being
three streams of Mathematics: Year 10 Maths Enhanced
and Year 10 Maths Standard for students intending to
continue with Mathematics in VCE and Year 10 Maths
Foundation for students intending to undertake VCAL or
Foundation Maths in Year 11. The courses will be tailored
to better align with VCE Maths subjects, so students have
the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake VCE and
VCAL Maths courses with confidence.
Another change is the inclusion of CAS calculators in Year
9 SEAL Maths. The use of CAS calculators is included in
the Victorian Curriculum and VCE study designs for 2017
and we understand the CAS calculator is a significant and
expensive purchase for parents. Students will be required
to have and use a CAS calculator until the completion of
their Year 12 Maths courses. Unfortunately there is no
iPad app or computer program that replaces this calculator
at this point in time.
The Maths Intervention Program has been so successful
this year, thanks to Miss Evans, that it will be expanded
next year to include Maths Intervention electives at Year 9
also. We have been delighted with the number of students
who have shown interest in participating in this elective
and we look forward to students’ increasing confidence
and engagement in Mathematics.
In 2017, we are a trial school and look forward to our
participation in a program “Resolve: Maths by Inquiry” run
by Australian Academy of Science (AAS) and the
Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT).
Year 7 and 8 teachers will be incorporating problem
solving and inquiry lessons into our Maths programs to
engage our students in thinking mathematically and
building Maths confidence. We will be supported in
delivering these lessons and units by an Outreach Officer,
Nadia Walker, who has worked as a Maths Consultant for
the Kingston Region in previous years.

Remembrance Day Service at Longbeach RSL
Mord ia l loc
College was
invited on
behalf of the
Longbeach
RSL Sub Branch Committee and Members to attend
their Remembrance Day service on Friday 11
November. Our SRC reps who attended were Sylvia
Alter and Annie Ea and they were each privileged to be
able to pay their respects by laying a single rose. Over
100 people attended the service and it was a humbling
experience to watch all the past and present soldiers
and members of the community place their roses too.
We were also given a speech about how important this
day was many years ago and why it is acknowledged
every year. We were told it marked the armistice
signed between the Allies of World War 1 and Germany
at Compiegne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on
the Western Front of World War 1, which took effect at
eleven o’clock in the morning on the 11th day
November 1918. This event is known to us as
Remembrance Day.
