MEMORANDUM
TO: Craig Beyrouty Dean, College Agriculture and Natural Resources
FROM: ElizabethBeise Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Programs
SUBJECT: Proposal to Modify the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy-Wildlife, Ecology, and Management Concentration (PCC log no. 15039)
At its meeting on December 4, 2015, the Senate Committee on Programs, Curricula and Courses approved the proposal to modify the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy - Wildlife, Ecology, and Management Concentration. A copy of the proposal is attached.
The change is effective Spring 2016. Please ensure that this change is fully described in the Undergraduate Catalog and in all relevant descriptive materials, including the undergraduate program's four-year plan (contact Lisa Kiely at lkiely(g),umd.edu for more information).

Type of Action (choose one): X Curriculum change - Wildlife Ecology & Mgmt • Curriculum change for an L E P Program
• Renaming ofprogram or formal Area of Concentration
• Addition/deletion of formal Area of Concentration
• Suspend/delete program
• New academic degree/award program
G New Professional Studies award iteration
• New Minor
• Request to create an online version of an existing
program
Italics indicate that the proposed program action must be presented to the full University Senate for consideration.
Summary of Proposed Action:
Action: Replace BSCI207 (Organismal Biology) with ENST214 (Intro to Fish and Wildlife Science). Rationale: B S C I 207 has not fit
into the program as we had anticipated. ENST214 will provide an important introduction to the concentration at the lower level.
Currently, Wildlife Ecology and Management students cannot take any wildlife-related courses until junior year, which limits their
subsequent academic and professional development. Please see supporting message from Chair of E N S T (attached).
Action: Revise the course selections in Restricted Electives. Rationale: These selections better reflect the kinds of courses students
must take if they wish to earn Certification as a Wildlife Biologist.

Hi Bob and Joe,
We/ENSP are in the midst of updating a number of our areas of concentrations; Wildlife Ecology and
Management is one of them. In doing so. we would include some BSCI courses on our lists of Restricted
Eiectives (see attached). We spoke about this at last December's (2014) PSC Meeting, and there were no
objections; however, campus VPAC will want something in writing.
Specifically, could you give permission for us/ENSP to include the following as Restricted Eiectives? If
not, we need to know that, too!
• BSCI207 - Organismal Biology
• BSCI360 - Principles of Animal Behavior
• BSCI392 - Biology of Extince Animals
• BSCI442 - Plant Physiology or PLSC400 - Environmental Plant Physiology
• BSC1481 - Insect Diversity and Classification
Re: expected demand on these courses ~ There are approximately 60 students enrolled in the Wildlife
Curriculum (about 20 in each of sophomore, junior, and senior years) and not all of them will choose
these courses, or choose them at the same time. There are several other Restricted Eiectives for them to
take, in addition to these listed above. Altogether, perhaps 5 students per semester might enroll in these
courses.
Many thanks for your consideration,
Wendy

Dear Dill,
Reggie Harrell has requested that his course, ENST 214 (Introduction to Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences), be used as a required introductory course for the Wildlife Ecology and Management specialty of ENSP. Jennifer Murrow fully supports this request, and she and Reggie have agreed that his course can be coordinated with ENST 460 (Principles of Wildlife Management) in terms of content (they use the same textbook). Both are fall semester offerings, but this should not present a problem, since they are lower and upper division courses that the students would take in different years. They have 36-40 seat offerings, and the demand for 214 may increase slightly, since many students take it now as an elective.
If you support this request, would you please send written confirmation? ENSP will have to modify the curriculum of Wildlife Ecology and Management and run it up through the CMS for formal approval in ENSP, AGNR, and Campus.
Thanks, Bruce

Hi Andy,
We/ENSP are in the midst of updating a number of our areas of concentrations; Wildlife Ecology and
Management is one of them. In doing so, we would include some ENST courses to our lists of Restricted
Eiectives (see attached). I think Jennifer Murrow has spoken informally to most of the instructors
involved (see cc: line) but campus VPAC will want something in writing.
Specifically, we would like to include the following courses as Restricted Eiectives:
• ENST333 - Ecosystem Health and Protection
• ENST404 — Natural Resources and Environmental Ethics
• ENST406 - Applied Forestry Practices
• ENST410 - Ecosystem Services
• ENST489D - Ecology and Management of Wildlife Habitats

Re: expected demand on these courses ~ There are approximately 60 students enrolled in the Wildlife
Curriculum (about 20 in each of sophomore, junior, and senior years) and not all of them will choose
these courses, or choose them at the same time. There are several other Restricted Eiectives for them to
take, in addition to these listed above. Altogether, perhaps 5 students per semester might enroll in these
courses.
If you could give your blessing to these course requests, that would be great. If not, we need to know
that, too!
Many thanks.

Hi Wendy,
After hearing fronr Drs. Fisher, Harrell, and Tjaden, it is OK for ENSP to use all of these courses
except ENST 410, which is at that maximum capacity that we can offer it with meaningful field
trips (already at 6 vans for each trip). You said you already heard from Dr. Murrow that it was
OK to use her courses.
I'm sorry we can't approve all of them at this time.
With best wishes,
Andy

I'm currently at a max in my ENST 410 ecosystem service class. Here's the situation, my classroom is
already at its capacity. I could take more students and move to a larger classroom on campus, but the
real problem is my field trips. I have already modified my field trips to deal with the increased student
enrollment and if I have more it will be extremely difficult to have a meaningful field trip experience. I
use 6 vans from motor pool and it becomes a management issue for me with this many students. I'd
prefer not to increase students in this class.
Reference to ENST 406 Applied Forestry Practices I can take more students. This course is also cross
listed with PSLA 475. I teach this every other year. I first offered this course last spring 15 and will offer
it again spring 2017.
Hope this helps.
Bob

Hi Reggie, Bob, Dan, and Jennifer,
Please let me know if a potential increase of about 5 students will impact your courses, and also
let me know if the courses listed below are actually being taught or not. The only ones I could
find in Testudo for this academic year were ENST 333 and 410.
Thanks,
Andy
