Dear Families and Community Members
Future Schools Conference Last week Hayley Wood (Year 7 team leader) and I ventured to Sydney to present at the 2014 Futures
Schools conference. The conference had a range of
international keynote speakers (from USA, UK, NZ), and speakers from across Australia. We were the only
secondary school representing Victoria, and also one of the few public schools presenting. There were 450
delegates attending the conference. The focus of our
presentation was on the past three and a half years: “Developing and maintaining the vision for Flexible
Learning and Teaching”. We discussed appropriately balancing flexible learning styles with structured
lessons; adopting a team approach to teaching, planning
and assessment; enabling students to personalise and self-manage their learning process and evaluating pedagogical
approaches through results and feedback. The excellent results achieved over the past three years at the College in Student
Learning, Engagement, Wellbeing and Pathways is cause for celebration. During the conference there was a live Twitter feed
and I am pleased to report we had only positive comments. Some
examples of comments made:
“Well done Mordialloc, representing Victoria so beautifully”
“Thanks Mordialloc College for a last session full of meaty info and
inspirational practice.”
“The My Mentor program looks fantastic, need to chat with these
girls.”
Future Facility development This week we hosted a visit from Tim Richardson,
Labor Candidate for Mordialloc and Shadow
Minister for Education James Merlino, MP. After touring the College facilities and
visiting classes, we discussed the urgent
community need to see a commitment for facility development at the College,
with our priority being the implementation of stage one of our
masterplan which includes the
development of a two court multi-purpose stadium and a Performing Arts
Centre. Mr Merlino was very supportive of the direction of the school and spoke
positively about the potential development project.
Primary School Principal tour On Monday we had five of our feeder primary schools
send a Principal team representative to tour the school and see the Year 7 centre in action and to
catch up with their former students. We finished with a morning tea and some of the Middle School captains
had prepared their own speech to tell them about
what they liked about Mordialloc College and what it has meant to them to be a student here for the past
two and a bit years. They did a great job speaking so proudly of their school and impressed the group.
Thanks to Scott Kingsbury, Callum Norrie, Finn McHenry and Taner Enez. Our girls in the middle
school leadership team were out on sport for the day,
so were unable to attend. The Year 7 teacher team also had the opportunity to speak to the group and
answer any questions.
Reporting to Parents This year student led conferences in Years 7+8 will be
held in the last few weeks of Term 1 and may go into
Term 2 depending on parent availability. In the last week of term, interim reports will be available for all
year levels via Compass. On Thursday 3rd April we will be holding Years 9-12 parent-teacher interviews and
Year 7+8 specialist teacher interviews following a normal school day. Parents will be able to book
interview times online via Compass from 4.00pm-
7.00pm. Assistant Principal, Kevin Osborne will be sending a letter to all parents with the instructions for
making the bookings via Compass.
Interschool Swim Carnival On Friday March 7 the Interschool Swimming Carnival was held and what an outstanding result for Mordialloc College to finish second, considering we are half
the size of the majority of the other competing secondary schools. McKinnon (1800 students) finished first and MC (600 students) finished 2nd! Schools with
over 1000 students finished third to sixth. Congratulations to all of our dedicated
PE staff for the support of our students.
Cultural Diversity Week This week the Year 7 students are celebrating Cultural Diversity Week, also supported by the VCAL program. Last year Shelley Muir, Bibi Peerbux and Matina
Karamanis applied for funding through the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s
Multicultural Festival and Events Grants program; and we were successful in being allocated $1300 to support the planned activities. Grants were made
available for activities that build intercultural understanding and/or embed global and multicultural citizenship perspectives.
The Year 7s have been working on their Cultural Diversity projects over the past
few weeks and these will be presented in a World Expo to staff and parents on Friday afternoon.
On Monday, the VCAL students raising money for their trip to Cambodia catered
for an international lunch. Friday period 1, the Year 7 students will participate in
an African drumming and dancing lesson. On Friday we are also celebrating Harmony Day as part of the week’s activities.
Music Performances out in the Community Thanks to Eve Macleod and Demis Danoudis for working with our senior band
and vocal group to prepare them for some community performances this term. They have performed at
two residential care
places, Elly Kay in Mordialloc and Chelsea
Manor, over the past two weeks.

The Parents/Friends Marquee is back!
It was great to be able to meet with some of our parents and grandparents at the recent swimming sports. We enjoyed relaxing poolside together taking in all the swimming and diving action,.
The Parents/Friends Marquee will be back for the athletic sports. All Family and carers are invited to join us again for a great opportunity to catch the action of the athletics carnival as well as being able to meet up with other parents and carers. Refreshments will be provided and there will be a BBQ operating during the day run by the Student Representative council (SRC) raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital
I look forward to meeting you trackside at the Marquee. Di Douglas,

FFFRRREEENNNCCCHHH NEWSNEWSNEWS Our College is planning a French School Trip to France during the January 2016 school holidays. We are currently sourcing the best costs with several travel companies. At this stage, the approximate cost of the 16-day trip will be approximately $5000 per student. This is roughly estimated on at least 15 students and 2 teachers going on the trip. We will let you know as soon as we have a more accurate quote.
The 16-day trip will cover a week in Montpellier with 15 hours of lessons at the language school; visits to the cities of Nimes and Avignon, 3 days in tours to visit the Loire Valley and Chateaux and 4 days in central Paris to visit all the famous icons. The week in Montpellier will include a home-stay experience for students staying in pairs with an allocated family.
Please note that students in Years 9-12 by January 2016 will be eligible to attend.
A letter will be sent out to French students soon with more information regarding this event. If you are interested in your son/daughter participating in this school event, please email Bibi Peerbux at the following address: [email protected] to express your interest and you will be informed of a future information session.
Many thanks for your continued support to learning French.

Intermediate Girls Softball Our Year 9 students - Kayla, Elena, Jasmine C, Jasmine B, Naomi, Alyx, Nicole and Nikkita -represented the school like ’Xena the Warrior Princess’ on Monday March 17, when they competed at Kingston Heath Reserve against other schools from our Region.
By the end of the day our skills had improved as had our understanding of some of the more tricky rules.
Overall - we came second (in every game) but the girls played like young champions and are showing some great development for next season.
Well done on a great sporting effort and representing the school beautifully.

An Invitation to the Clayton and Dingley Waste Forum:

committed to holding 3 further gatherings to focus on progress being made to address these concerns and to
share thoughts on future developments of the area. The group would like to extend an invitation to the
communities of Clayton and Dingley to join them for the first discussion of 2014. Please join us between

Public Transport Survey Notice Public Transport Victoria (PTV) has contracted with Phillip Boyle & Associates to undertake a number of passenger loading surveys across Melbourne on PTV funded school bus services. This WILL involve survey staff travelling on PTV funded school buses.
These surveys commenced on 6 March 2014 for a 5 week period concluding in early April. The survey will be across 230 trips with each trip surveyed twice (to account for natural variability). Phil Boyle and Associates will be carrying out these surveys for PTV and it will require that their staff observe bus loadings by travelling on the school trip from beginning to end and recording the number of students boarding or disembarking the vehicle at each stop or school. Surveys may also occur on occasion by following the bus in a car. The surveys do not involve direct interaction with students (i.e. there are no interviews).
As the survey necessarily involves travelling the entirety of the trip, survey staff may be in your grounds in the morning if the school bus ends inside your school grounds. In this instance, staff have been instructed to leave the grounds immediately via the nearest exit. None of the surveyed trips re-quire staff to enter your school grounds in the afternoon.
All survey staff have been instructed to wear an identifiable hi-vis vest with the company name “Phillip Boyle & Associates” on it. Staff will also carry with them a company ID card and a letter from PTV authorising their travel.
If you have any questions at all, please contact Daniel Borowski at Phillip Boyle & Associates on 8819 3733 or 0422 522 034.
