From the Principal

Family WeekThis week is Family Week. I wanted to celebrate this week by giving you some helpful tips about parenting and about being one as a family.

All family therapists will say the key to a thriving family is the result of a proactive parent.

Focus on the Family reports that Professor Nick Stinnett from the University of Alabama conducted an extensive study with thousands of families from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. The study found that thriving families share 6 qualities. • Time Together: quality and quantity time.

They enjoy each other’s company and create great memories and traditions.

• Commitment: they look out for each another. They value their relationships.

• Appreciation and Affection: don’t take one another for granted and show their love through words and action.

• Positive Communication: encourage one another with their words, talk openly and honestly and aim to listen to understand where the other person is coming from.

• Spiritual awareness: have a sense of strength from another source. This could be through their faith, spiritual beliefs or in a church and religious ceremony.

• Cope with Stress and Crises: They band together and support one another and as a result navigate the storm and grow stronger as a family.

I also believe that a key to a strong family is a strong marriage.

Do you pay attention to your spouse or partner like you did when you first started dating? Give compliments? Listen to what they say and respond with interest?

Do you show affection to your spouse or partner? Have date nights? Send flowers? Put sweet notes into a lunch box or briefcase? Hug a lot and make your children groan?

Do you give affirmation to your spouse or partner? Do you raise their value as you talk to and about them? Do you affirm their strengths? Do you praise them to your children?

Isn’t it interesting that the way spouses and partners should treat each other correlated with the way that they should also treat their children? What makes families strong is what makes marriages/partnerships strong. We were built for relationship – to be loved and respected and to create an atmosphere of fun and security for all family members.

The impact of the wider culture on your family often seems insurmountable, so while you put into place the advice above, here is some more help to keep your family safe.

I would like you to take up the Family Challenge that Focus on the Family have developed. Go to their website families.org.au/challenge for more details, but it will help you with areas such as: PornographyTechnologyAlcohol and drugsSexGrief and traumaIdentity and LGBTI

I often say to parents that their love for one another is the greatest gift they can give their children. Never underestimate the hard work that is required, but also don’t underestimate the power of an undivided family.

I watch the fallout of broken homes every day, and have my own story of pain and brokenness which helps me to know and understand the pressures and hurts, as well as great joy, that only living in a family can bring.

May God bless you on your journeys to wholeness. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Sue

Here we see the characteristics or actions of a person with little or no integrity; Pride, committing evil deeds, lying and stirring up trouble amongst those close to you (this includes gossip). And the Lord hates these things!

A person of integrity will distance themselves from such behaviour. Most of us are probably tempted to get caught up in things like pride, lying and gossip for example. Not criminal offences, but just as damaging! Perhaps more damaging at times.

In light of just these three factors, could you genuinely be considered a person of Integrity? If so, great! If not, now might be a good time to commit to change. Ask God to help you. He will!

for the week

Proverbs 6:16-20These six things the Lord hates, yes seven that are detestable to

him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are quick to rush into

evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who stirs up trouble

amongst friends

HUSHATHON Fundraiser - Junior School staff would like to thank students and parents for the incredible response to their Hushathon Fundraiser last term.

$4072.20 was raised. An incredible result! This money will be used to pay the annual sponsorship fees of two Sponsor Children, Milo and Nikolou.

Due to the amount raised, we have also been able to give a $2000 donation to Safe Haven Children’s Home in the Philippines to go towards the schooling fees of the 15 children in their care.

Jets in Japan

Issac Quinn

On Thursday 28 April, my family and I travelled to Japan so I could play in

the Tokyo u14’s International Youth Football Tournament. My Emerging

Jets team mates and I represented NSW. There were 8 international

teams including us. They were from Cairo, Paris, Berlin, Seoul, Argentina,

Brazil and China. There were also 8 Japanese teams. The tournament

was played at the Komazawa Olympic stadium.

Our team came up against some very tough competition and finished

14th overall.

At the end of the tournament we had opportunities to swap shirts and

souvenirs with other teams. It was a wonderful experience and a great

opportunity to play against some of the best 14 year old boys in the

world.

Be safe online! It’s far better to avoid online problems than to try to repair damage. Young children shouldn’t be exposed to material that they don’t have the maturity to process or contextualise. Online content seen by children cannot be unseen and cyberbullying can have devastating consequences.

Block: Prevent your child from accessing inappropriate material (use filters, lock codes, passwords, etc). Remember children can access the Internet through Safari on iPads and iPods. Use the restrictions and set age appropriate boundaries. Set your search preferences to safe mode.

Look: Monitor your child’s online activity. Look and listen. Be aware of their online activity. Know how to check the browser history if you have concerns. In Chrome and Explorer press CTRL H (view history). On Safari, tap and hold on the Back button. Make sure pop ups are blocked http://www.popuptest.com/.

Train: Teach your child how to be safe when they are unsupervised. Talk to them about what they would do in various circumstances, e.g. a friend shows them a game that they know they wouldn’t be allowed to play, someone sends them a mean message, they find a rude image during a search, etc.

The Internet has a wealth of material and a quick search for cyber safety, family Internet filter, parental controls etc. can provide you with the information you need.

Kinder - Year 2 Athletics CarnivalLast Wednesday 11 May, K-2 students enjoyed a fun day on the College Oval for their Athletics Carnival. The highlights for the day were the bean bag races, sack races and of course the children loved watching their parents participate in a parent race.

A great day was had by all. Thank you to all the parents who attended.
