The University of Georgia and School of Music
Founded in 1785, The University of Georgia is the oldest state-chartered university in the United States. In addition to the School of Music and the other curricula of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the university offers programs of study in business, environmental design, law, journalism, agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and education. There are over 141 individual fields of study. With an enrollment of over 30,000 students, the university is the capstone unit in the University System of Georgia, offering programs of study through the doctoral level in most fields. Students attending the university represent every county in Georgia, all 50 states, and some 100 foreign countries. The university has over 350 student organizations. The degree programs offered through the School of Music include the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Arts; the Master of Music and Master of Arts; and the Doctor of Education, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music. Undergraduate majors include performance, composition, church music, music therapy, music education, and music theory.
In addition, an elective minor in music is available for students interested in music but majoring in another discipline. UGA music faculty members are exceptionally well qualified to offer high level instruction in their respective areas of specialization. All hold advanced degrees, and all are active professionally. Current enrollment in the school is approximately 350 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students; there are approximately 50 full-time faculty members and 48 graduate assistants. The school offers many performing ensembles in addition to the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, two Concert Bands, and the popular Redcoat Marching Band, two jazz bands, five choral groups, and two orchestras perform each quarter. Several faculty ensembles are in residence, including the Franklin String Quartet, the Georgia Brass Quintet, the Georgia Woodwind Quintet, and the Baroque Ensemble. Along with the Percussion Ensembles, the Faculty-Graduate Georgia Brass, and other student woodwind and brass ensembles, these organizations perform regularly on campus, in the Athens and Atlanta areas, and nationally and internationally.
