Hydrogen Sulfide Generation

• H2S may be generated from the biological reduction of sulfate (SO4

-2) under anaerobic conditions by Sulfur Reducing Bacteria leading to Septic conditions.

• Septic conditions are present once the dissolved oxygen

(O2) and nitrate (NO3-) oxygen are depleted.

The oxidation of dissolved H2S in the presence of O3 is a thermodynamically favorable reaction with a theoretical ratio of 4:1.

The reaction rate with O3 is pH dependent as H2S is a diprotic acid.

In normal pH ranges though, hydrogen sulfide exits only in the form of H2S and HS- in water.
