Objective: to support our Engineering teams for design, reviews, anomaly investigation, integration & testing planning and evaluations
Two main research branches:• User Interaction with Virtual Products
Virtual EnvironmentsImmersive Virtual RealityInteraction DevicesPhysics Simulation
• Data Production and Exchange by Engineering TeamsModel-Based System Engineering MethodologiesSystem Data Modeling (ECSS driven)Data Exchange Platform for Engineering Analysis and SimulationsKnowledge Management (Projects Data Persistence, Comparison and Mining)
Transition from VR&CE concepts to a future integrated environment (DEVICE)
But let’s start from what we already didwe already did

VERITAS architecture
General aspects:- Runs on Win32 Operative Systems- Developed in C++ under Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 - Built upon Open Source / free libraries
OpenSG (which is OpenGL based) for the graphicsTinyXML and Boost for XML parsingOpenAL for the sound systemnVIDIA PhysX for the physical engine
- Main technical achievements:Precision problems solutionBehavioral/Graphical effectsNew interaction devices (e.g. Nintendo Wiimote, Force Feedback, Motion Tracking)
- Runs on a single PC or in a CAVE- The main applications run on a “master PC”
Loads a virtual scene defined in a XML fileUpdates the scene according to time and user interactions

DEVICEDEVICE (DDistributed EEnvironment for VVirtual IIntegrated CCollaborative EEngineering) is the container of the conducting prototypes on:
- Modeling Tools- Great interest on standardization initiatives and modeling studies
- Product and Process models (DBs)- In house Prototypes to validate concepts
- Process Management Tools to support Asynchronous work- Also to enable concurrent engineering between different departments and sites
- Analysis Tools interfaces (tool-to-tool and centralized)- Starting from the already existing methods, studying a more efficient and
customizable way
Modular Architecture to enable transition from a collection of prototypes to a mixture of COTS and in-house applications

The COSE Centre experience with the visualization demonstrated that the distance between the project stakeholders and the design rationales may be reduced through the use of a virtual product (good feedbacks from technical disciplines and management)
We agree on the worldwide vision that MBSE is the future, but only if the useruser and its activities are considered as primary objective and not the tools
Our effort has been and will be spent taking care of the three main components for a real innovation:
- Technology- Spin-in from other domains (e.g. networking, entertainment)
- People - being part of the mission, more pleasure to create
- Organization- Enhance knowledge sharing possibilities and teaming
