“To believe firmly and to keep silent is not possible.” Saint Pedro Poveda, Founder Teresian Association

Saint Pedro Poveda established Sacred Heart School for Girls and Boys and conducted vocational training and Christian formation for adults, while living among the poorest of the poor-the cavedwellers-in Guadix. Fr. Poveda He effectively evangelized and humanized these people. It

was in 1911, before the image of Our Lady of Covadonga where Pedro Poveda received the inspiration to establish academies or educational centers throughout Spain, which later led to the foundation of the Teresian Association, which he named for St. Teresa of Avila, a woman of learning, a doctor of the Church, and a teacher of prayer. His organization, the Teresian Association, aimed to invite lay men and women to work for a social and human transformation, in accordance with Gospel values, from the platform of their own professions, especially those related to the fields of education and culture. Its objective, then and now, is the human promotion of individuals and the transformation of unjust structures by means of an education and culture imparted from a Christian perspective. A few days before his death Fr. Poveda wrote, "Now more than ever we must study the lives of the first Christians so as to learn from them how to behave... See how they obeyed the Church, how they confessed Christ, how they prepared for martyrdom, how they prayed for their persecutors and forgave them.” Pope Saint John Paul II said that "Saint Pedro Poveda grasped the importance of the role of education in society and undertook an important humanitarian movement among the marginalized and the needy. He was a teacher of the Christian life and of the relationship between faith and knowledge, convinced that Christians must bring essential values and commitment to building a world that is more just and mutually supportive. His life ended with the crown of martyrdom." Fr. Poveda knew that a true religious experience involves knowing and doing. He was deeply aware of both the need for education and for qualified teachers to provide it. As the next school year begins, let us thank God for the example of Fr. Poveda. His values and goals are the same for the teachers of our own. Sacred Heart School. They, too, str ive to form children who str ive to “work for a social and human transformation, in accordance with Gospel values from the platform of their own professions” throughout their lives. Let us pray together that God mightily bless them and our students-and us- in this school year.

Family Faith Formation Parent meeting on Monday, September 12 (tomorrow), in the Lower Church Hall of Sacred Heart Church at 6:30 pm. This is an especially important meeting during which the new Family Faith Formation program for all children and parents will be explained. All those who should have registered in our program have received prior notice of this meeting. If you have not yet registered for this program, you may do so on-line by clicking on the “Faith Formation” tab on our collaborative website (www.shstm.org). Transportation to the 9 am Sunday Mass is needed for a long-time parishioner. If you are able to assist in this need, please call Maureen at 781-337-6333 or e-mail at [email protected]. Box Tops for Education: You may have noticed those small box top labels on many products. These pink box tops allow schools-including our own Sacred Heart School- to receive funds for educational products and services. Because SHS is a collaborative parish school, we ask that all parishioners to cut and save these box tops to support our school. Box Tops may be brought to the collaborative parish office, dropped at the school, or left in a plastic bag on tables at the back of our churches. With your help, our school could receive thousands of dollars this year. Please help. Thank you. RESPECT FOR LIFE MONTH in October. Mrs. Jean Healey, who has generously served as chairperson of our collaborative parishes’ Respect for Life Committee for many years, has now retired from this committee. We are so grateful for Jean’s faith-filled service and wish her well in her new endeavors. In the meantime, plans need to be made for Respect for Life (RFL) Month. All (RFL) members are asked to attend a planning session on Wednesday, September 14 at 6:30 pm in the Lower Church Hall. All interested in joining this committee are welcome! Cardinal Sean O'Malley will celebrate a Jubilee for Catechists, beginning with Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral next Sunday, September 18 at 11:30 am for catechists who will represent each parish throughout our diocese. We are blessed to have three catechists present at this Mass. Thank you to Mary Dhooge, Lauren Gray and Vera Santos who will attend this Mass to represent the catechetical Family Faith Formation program of the collaborative parishes of Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More. We are grateful for their goodness and commitment, and for the generosity of time, talent and treasure that all of our catechists share with our parish family.

Today, we hear Jesus say to us, In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the shepherd rejoices when he finds one lost sheep. The story tells us that nothing and no one

is insignificant to God who is compassionate and loving to all. Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a

loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul…we want to help!

Cardinal Newman

and Christian

repentance

Cardinal John

Henry Newman’s

reflections on the

parable of the

prodigal son are still

relevant for us

today:

Repentance is a

work carried on at

diverse times, and

but gradually and

with many reverses

perfected. Or rather, and without any change in the meaning of the word repentance, it is a work

never complete, never entire – unfinished both in its inherent imperfection, and on account of the

fresh and fresh occasions that arise for exercising it. We are ever sinning; we must ever be

renewing our sorrow and our purpose of obedience, repeating our confessions and our prayers for

pardon. No need to look back to the first beginnings of our repentance, should we be able to trace

these, as something solitary and peculiar in our religious course; we are ever but beginning; the

most perfect Christian is to himself but a beginner, a penitent prodigal, who has squandered God’s

gifts, and comes to Him to be tried over again, not as a son, but as a hired servant.

In this parable, then, we need not understand the description of the returning prodigal to imply that

there is a state of disobedience and subsequent state of conversion definitely marked in the life of

Christians generally. It describes the state of all Christians at all times, and is fulfilled more or less,

according to circumstances, in this case or that; fulfilled in one way and measure at the beginning

of our Christian course, and in another at the end.
