. . . the best draughtsman in England

since William Blake.Richard Hamilton

Page 3: Colin Self

Born in 1941 Colin Self was educated at Wymondham College in Norfolk andthen studied art at Norwich Art School and the Slade School of Fine Art (1961-63).At the Slade he met and was encouraged by Peter Blake and David Hockney andbecame influenced by Pop Art. During the Cold War period of the1960s he wasinterested in the self-destructive impulses in human nature as demonstrated bythe vast proliferation of nuclear weapons and this was reflected in the prints thathe made at the time.

Self is an important printmaker and in some respects he redefined the process ofetching by inking separate metal plates placed side by side, often printing fromfound objects or producing unique variants rather than uniform editions of prints. The etchings offered here were immaculately printed for Self by the renownedMaurice Payne. Payne has printed for David Hockney for over forty years.

The Tate holds many of Self’s works in diverse media and, as the art historianDavid Buckman has indicated, reflects how, since the artist’s return to Norfolk inthe 1970s, his interests have been … concerned with landscape, his children,

the art of the past, politics, money and the unemployed, which the artist termed

‘works of fusion’. The late Richard Hamilton called Self the best draughtsman in

England since William Blake and, perhaps again indicating the influence ofNorfolk, Hamilton added that when Self went through a period painting landscapewatercolours, it was … as though Cotman had come to life again.

In 1969, after being represented by London’s Robert Fraser Gallery and then byLondon’s Marlborough Fine Arts Ltd., he decided to separate from dealersaltogether and has represented himself since.

Over many years Self has exhibited internationally in group shows includingGalleria Milano, Milan (1965), Camden Arts Centre (1967), Tokyo International PrintBiennale (1969), Museum of Modern Art, New York (1972-73), China and HongKong tour (1982), Comic Iconoclasm, ICA (1987) and Continuing the Tradition,Chappel Galleries (1993). Important solo exhibitions have included the PiccadillyGallery (1964-65), Alecto Gallery (1968), Fermoy Centre (1979), ICA (1986), TateGallery (1995-96), Pallant House Gallery (2008) and also in France and Germany.
