Process PaperOriginally, we were interested in the development of technology for people with

disabilities. We came across the topic of tactile pavement and the inventor, Syechii

Miyake. However, we determined that this topic was not the turning point for people with

disabilities, there was something more influential. Thus, we came across Dr. Timothy

Nugent, the “Father of Accessibility.” He was an original, influential, and intuitive activist

for people with disabilities. Dr. Nugent had shifted the general perception of people with

disabilities to a significantly improved one.

As Timothy Nugent started his advocacy at the University of Illinois, we started

our research on the University of Illinois archives. This provided us with pictures and

background information. From there, we continued by searching on KCLS databases,

such as eLibrary, which us with many more articles on his accomplishments and his

methods. To advance our understanding on disability justice today, we researched local

advocates building off Dr. Nugent’s work. Robert Blumenfeld, the associate director of

an advocation organization called Alliance of People with disAbilities was a prime

example of a modern advocate building off Nugent’s accomplishments. Through this

interview, we gained a better understanding of how disability justice has improved since

the 1900’s. We learned that Dr. Nugent also founded the NWBA (National Wheelchair

Basketball Team) as a way to break social barriers for people with disabilities. To get a

better perspective on the impact of wheelchair sports, we interviewed the Olympics

Team USA captain, Steve Serio, who knew of Nugent’s accomplishments. From our

interview with Robert Blumenfeld, we discovered that a big part of advocacy comes in

Page 16: Colin Sarabosing and Brandon Luo Junior Division Exhibit Student … · 2020. 9. 18. · Colin Sarabosing and Brandon Luo Junior Division Exhibit Student Composed Words: 490 Process

legislative areas. We interviewed the city council administrator for disability justice,

Blayne Amson, who provided us with a better understanding of equity versus

compliance. These interviews really helped us to understand how Timothy Nugent has

shaped society today.

We chose to do an exhibit because part of Timothy Nugent’s work was creating

accessibility improvements. Wheelchairs are a big reflection of Timothy Nugent’s work

to make people with disabilities independent and able to commute. We constructed our

exhibit out of foam, cutting it using a hot-wire and circular saw.

Timothy Nugent directly relates to the theme of Breaking Barriers because

before Timothy Nugent’s work, people with disabilities were kept in institutions, creating

a barrier between them and the “able-bodied”. This prohibited them from obtaining jobs,

recreation, and education. Timothy Nugent broke that barrier through advocacy, the

founding of the NWBA, and by making the University of Illinois accessible to everyone.

This change in the world and Nugent’s constant avocation was a big factor in why our

world is as inclusive and accessible as it is today.
