HOLOTOPIA
These schemata depict holarchic systems navigating the pursuit of “meaning”. The left schema maps a version of my personal generative algorithm, in which a form goes through various bi-phases of selective intuitive editing, only to be recombined with a similarly edited progression of itself. The right schema depicts my bifurcated journey as a self and as part of an equal whole. Both are part of a larger project researching the possibilities of Holotopia, or egalitarian multi-use space. Holotopia is differentiated from Utopia by its possibility to exist everywhere in the now. It differentiates itself from Foucault’s Heterotopia by being inclusive of, and included in, contemporary socio-spatial relations.

Digital Video.
A dystopian future interior set to a soundscape by Chicago-based aural experimentalists, Locrian. Made using Rhino, AfterEffects, and Quartz Composer, the video explores the possibility for constructed environ-
ments to induce meditative seizure through form.

TORN INTO ENTHRALLMENTIn each drawing, a diagram of a popular sacred geometric form, e.g. the Sephiroth, the Buddhist Wheel of Life, or the Christian cross, is used as a framework for intuitive drawing composition. The drawings reference New Age and American psychedelic counter-culture composition techniques, yet re-contextualize them as formalist artworks by stripping them of their overt proselytizing.

INITIATION OF THE CALMDOME. 8 channel interactive sound system (Arduino, PureData, Ableton, proximity sensors), digital prints, graphite drawings, industrial floor
tape, wood, foam, soundproofing, hardware, lacquer.
The first Carnal Torpor installation began our work with the Calm-Dome, a space for multi-mediated group metaphysical experience. The boundary of the CalmDome defines the CalmDomain, a domain for the open sourcing of group consciousness in a perpetual state of becoming. Within the CalmDomain, networked embedded media systems enable the architecture of the CalmDome to become conscious of, and conversant with, its inhabitants, while assisting these inhabitants in becoming aware of their own interpersonal inter-active agency and the possibilities of the power of collective agency.
INITIATION OF THE CALMDOME
The first version of the CalmDome consisted of a soundproof, lightfast geodesic dome encircled by 6 triangular contemplation kiosks, all within a truncated Carnal Torpor sigil as floorplan. Each kiosk displayed a drawing by Seth Johnson which reconfig-ured pop cultural items as sacred iconography and divination tools. Embedded under the drawings were both sonic range finders and speakers. As visitors moved through the space along the pathways of the sigil, their proximity to the drawings was gathered as input, which then constantly re-configured sound compositions by Ashley Miller. Within the pitch-black, highly padded, and warm interior of the CalmDome itself, a stereo sound system played binaural frequencies which mimicked brain-waves during REM sleep, modulated by sensor data from the exterior system. The CalmDome housed up to 6 people for collective experiences.
Center for the Advancement of Transmodern Awareness, Dec. 2010, ongoing. Long-term installation, pop-up retail and community space.
Repurposing and reconfiguring many of our past works into a new cohesive space, Carnal Torpor opened the Center for the Advancement of Transmodern Awareness on the Winter Solstice of 2010. CATA is designed to be a flexible, multi-media, and active social space, housing an emerging series of events which bring attention to the consciousness and will of both the individual and the collective through actions with promote purposeful interchange, such as a health-benefit-skill-sharing exchange on New Year’s Day. In addition, the space will serve as a retail location for cultural items produced by CT and many others, as well as a planning and design studio for the members of Carnal Torpor.
