“CRCDS envisions ministry broadly. Ithink of my ministry as one of hosting andhospitality, particularly when the guests getto ask questions of each other and learnthings that might have otherwise slippedthrough the cracks. In my ministry amongthe Religious Society of Friends, I often tryto serve as a catalyst, inviting people to ex-perience the transforming holy power ofthe Spirit of God.”

“In the Iona Community the words ‘ALLARE WELCOME’ weave their way throughthe life and liturgy like a Celtic knot. Inmuch the same way, at CRCDS the ethos of‘all are welcome’ weaves its way throughclasses and conversations, through lecture-ships and liturgy. All are welcome to exploreand express what it means to be a person offaith, what it means to be faculty and stu-dents from different cultures, classes, cli-mates – regionally and theologically, fromdifferent communions and denominations. All are welcome to be heard and honed as weseek to learn and grow; as some edges aresharpened and others are made smooth, inthe season of perfecting called ‘theologicaleducation.’ All are welcome to be transfor-mative leaders, ready to embrace the chal-lenges and wonders of the 21st Century.”

“All [people] are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.

”The world is becoming increasingly interconnected andinterdependent. This changing global reality challenges the 21st century Church and its leaders to address social, economic, and political concerns in new ways. Our students are encouragedto examine these complicated issues from varying perspectives and to formulate solutions that are informed by their biblical faith and committed to prophetic witness.

We do more than educate excellent ministers. We prepareprogressive leaders who are globally conscious, passionate abouttheir beliefs, and ready to become agents of change in the worldaround them.

We take great pride in our academic standards. Our facultyconsists of men and women with advanced degrees from suchschools as Harvard University, Yale Divinity School, theUniversity of Glasgow, and Union Theological Seminary in theCity of New York. Most have published extensively, helping todefine and set direction in their fields of study.

Our belief is that scholarship should maintain respect for theunderstandings of the past while encouraging a freedom oftheological inquiry for the future. Innovative programs thatembody this viewpoint include curricula in Black Church Studies,Women and Gender Studies, and Interfaith Studies.

Our heritage merges the strengths and traditions of four different schools over a 190-year period. The first, in 1817, was the Hamilton Theological and LiteraryInstitute in rural Hamilton, New York. The institutewould later become Colgate Theological Seminary—the theological division of Colgate University. Anoffshoot of Colgate Theological Seminary was thenplanted in Rochester in 1850, when a number of facultyand students came from Colgate to Rochester to helpbegin a new university and seminary. Consequently, the Rochester Theological Seminary was foundedconcurrently with the University of Rochester.
