From Our President - Dr. Bill Barley

Happy Fall everybody. First off I would like to thank

everyone who attended our annual membership meeting on

Thursday, September 20. At the meeting, we were able to report our

recent successes, current concerns and future plans for our club.

We were also able to garner valuable input from the membership.

The membership informed us at the meeting, that they wanted more

input on key issues. For example, the "modernized" version of our

logo used on our website to enhance marketing drew quite a bit of

attention. Many in attendance did not approve of this modernized

logo. They requested that the board get a better feel from everyone

regarding this logo use and regarding other pressing issues. So... we

have developed a survey which will be sent out electronically and will

enable us to hear from you and allow us to make educated decisions

on your behalf. For those who may not be so electronically inclined a

printed copy will be included in the monthly statements for you to be

heard. The staff will then input these into our database so the results

are counted. A deadline of October 14th

is needed to input the

responses. We currently have approximately 140 e-mail addresses.

This represents less than one third of our membership. Please go to

the website under mulligan and sign up for future communications.

At our membership meeting, we had approximately 25 memberships

represented, again the input was greatly valued but we need to hear

from more of you to help us make better decisions. We ask that each

membership only fill out one survey.

From Our President - Continued

What is in a name? Our beautiful entryway sculpture has our logo and only the words "Cold Springs." Our

scorecard has our logo and the words "Cold Springs Golf and Country Club". And as mentioned above our

web site logo has a modernized version of our logo with the words "Cold Springs Golf Club." As you can see

each of these representations are slightly different. Just to reassure you, we have not changed our

formal/legal name. The IRS, banks and all our vendors know us as "Cold Springs Golf and Country Club, Inc".

Personally I'm not sure that it matters what we are called as much as whom we represent. We are a friendly

affordable place to play golf and socialize and build friendships. Some of us wear jeans; some of us wear the

latest Adidas outfits. Some of us drive pickup trucks while others drive Corvettes. But we all love our golf

course and appreciate the affordability and value of Cold Springs. Most importantly we want to know what

you think. We represent you and we make decisions based on your desires. So please fill out our survey.

There are also other the issues on the horizon that require guidance from you. Based on the results of the

survey we will make appropriated changes as we guide this ship.

Health tip of the month: It is important for you to spend time with your animal. Studies have shown that

spending time with your animals lowers your heart rate, lowers your heart rate variability, and has a calming

effect. In fact there is some evidence that suggests as you spend more time with your animal, both heart

rates actually synchronize. There is definitely something to relaxation techniques, biofeedback and animal

therapy. Try it you will like it.

See you on the course.

General Manager - Kevin Earl

The rain is coming….good thing for the grass and bad thing for golfers! I am happy to report that the turf quality is better

going into the winter now than it ever has been. Great job Doug and to your crew.

I would like to thank all the participants who attended the annual meeting in September. The topics included operational

issues, financial issues, and HR issues. During the presentation I had the pleasure (tongue firmly planted in cheek) of

talking about some of the legislative issues and regulatory controls that are coming. These include ADA, health care

changes and workplace statutes. The laws in California are confusing and certainly complex. New laws every year seem

to solve one problem but lead to others.

With that being said, what the club should know is we are facing a 25% increase in workman’s comp without having a

claim for over 5 years! Huh! Yep, the insurance companies use business models to forecast lawsuits each year. This

drives their profit minded existence to raise rates or they leave town. Workman’s comp is mandatory so we just have to

pay it.

On the less fun front than that…A “Code of conduct” is being circulated amongst the Board for review, and will be used

to compliment the policies of the club. This is so the rules of behavior become better understood. Many old ways of

conflict that happens with human beings are now illegal. This is again to protect the club in this very litigious society.

What does this mean to the “Old Way” of doing business? Things have to change and many people “Don’t” like change.

Stay tuned folks…we still are and will continue to focus on our Vision & Mission.

To remind everyone they are:

Mission: We are a golf club that creates a fun. Social and affordable experience

Vision: To be known as the friendliest, most affordable golfing experience in Northern California

So come out and enjoy the fall colors, be with your friends and lets remember the good shots, not all the bad ones!

We will not be having our Charity Tournament this year as no one stepped up to run it for us. Apologies to our local

worthwhile charities. On October 2nd we will do a “Make your own foursome” and play two best balls of the four from the

blue tees.

On October 9th the Niners are having their “Ladies Invite the Men” so we will be teeing off at 9:30 AM. Also on the 9th is

our final round of Team Play at Rancho Murrieta, sign up sheet is in the locker room. Sign up early and pay Gloria so she

can take care of golf.

Our Pro Points and Putts and Ace of the Month game was played early in the month and Rosemary Authier took the prize

with a net 74, good golf Rosemary.

Most improved for the month of August was Heidi Caldwell with a 1.033 improvement. Obviously all of her work has paid

off, good job Heidi!

The sign up sheet is in the lounge for our annual “Ladies Invite the Men” tournament on the 16th. Charlotte Henderson is

our chair for this match. Sign up early so she can have everything taken care of prior to our play day.

Our meeting is late in the month for various reasons. October 23rd, 8:00 AM please plan to be there, we might have some

important issues to discuss. The 30th will be our Tombstone Tournament; always fun to see how far you can make that

handicap go and hate being the first one out.

7. When Another Player is addressing the ball. There are only two things that every other player should bedoing when a player is addressing the ball: standing absolutely still and watching the player hit. Movement isunacceptable. Talking is unacceptable. Fussing with equipment is unacceptable. Looking around isunacceptable. Stand still and watch the shot. If you can’t render this simple courtesy, then you do not belong ona golf course.

Greens and Grounds – Doug Jeffery

We got a lot done in the past few weeks. Greens were aerated using a standard coring tine and solid deep

tine. We moved on to aerating tees as soon as we were done with the greens. Cool season turf grass seed was spread

onto the tees along with sand and both were dragged in. The following week we got started on approaches and green

surround. Again working in cool season grass seed into open aeration holes as best as we could. The back nine

approaches and green surrounds will be done by October 1st. There are many causes for areas getting too wet,

besides the obvious of too much irrigation for the isolated area. There could be irrigation throw from sprinkler heads

that may be hitting into tree branches disrupting coverage. There may be areas where water collects flowing off cart

paths. Or, high organic surface soils that hold a lot of water, on top of sub soils with poor percolation and drainage

exist. To correct these problem areas that receive too much water than the soil can handle, is to adjust the “cycle”

and “soak” times or turn of the run time completely. But that might mean sacrificing a large area to dry up a small

isolated area. Also pruning up low branches to allow irrigation throw to go underneath. We can correct the soil

issues by topdressing, aerating hard soil areas and adding drainage. On the 6th green, with more favorable fall

weather, we have a greater opportunity for seedling survival. Where we will continue to spike in seed and sand the

problem areas.

From the Kitchen and Bar”

Fall is here and the days will start to shorten. At times it may be necessary to

adjust the hours of operation, so please check with the bartender when making the

turn.

Thank you to all who have supported our Friday Night Dinners. Due to the great

interest, Friday Night Dinners will return to a regular schedule of every Friday evening,

beginning October 5th. Please keep in mind that reservations are required and must

be made by 4:00 p.m. on the Thursday prior. All late reservation requests or last

minute add-ons must be approved by Patty or Lori.

In the blink of an eye it will be New Year’s Eve again! We are planning on a

five-course meal with dancing and a champagne toast at “New York” Midnight. It

promises to be a fun-filled New York style New Year’s Eve. The evening will begin at

5:30 p.m. with cocktails and appetizers. Dinner will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., a

toast at 9:00 p.m. and dancing until 10:30 p.m. Make your reservations early, as there

is a 100 person max. The cost for the evening will remain the same as last year at

$65.00 per person, inclusive. So, polish up your dancing shoes and join us for the fun!

From the Golf Shop

Doing our Part

Ask any golfer, a friend who plays this wonderful game or fellow member if they like bumpy

green. Do you think they would respond with, “Yes, I love to putt through ball marks it makes the game

more exciting!” I don’t think so. With that said, we all need to do our part and fix ball marks. On any given

afternoon you will be able to find 15-40 ball marks on our greens. If you are waiting while another playing

partner is putting find one and fix it, if you cannot find your own, fix one that you do find…I tend to get

really fixated on the greens and fix up to 5 (again while others are putting therefore we don’t affect pace of

play).

I remember as a junior golfer it was exciting to fix my very “own” ball mark, there was almost a

sense of accomplishment that I hit a green! Now that I am older it is not so much about accomplishment (I

would hope) but more about taking pride in our beautiful golf course and doing everything in my power to

make it better…even if that means a few little ball marks on the greens.

Most of the time when a ball mark is not repaired it leaves the roots exposed. This is especially

important during the summer months as it does not take long for the scorching sun to burn out and kill those

exposed roots. The other issue would be the importance of fixing ball marks correctly. Many golfers

believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of

the crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the

surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward only tears the roots, and kills the

grass. You should insert the divot tool into the side of the ball mark with slight twists toward the center of

the ball mark. .Have you ever notice a perfect circular dirt spot? Well, that would be an improperly fixed

ball mark..

Below is a “how to” illustration from the GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of

America). Notice the slight twisting motion towards the center?
