CHAPTER PRESIDENT PUBLISHES REVOLUTIONARY WAR NOVELS!

Geoff Baggett recently realized his dream of publishing a novel. His first writing project is entitled Brothers and Warriors. It tells the story of his ancestors, James and John Hamilton, and their trials and adventures during the American Revolution. He completed a companion “chapter book” for elementary students entitled Little Hornet. It focuses on the exploits of William Hamilton, the “baby” brother of the Hamilton Clan.

Geoff will be marketing his books at various events throughout the remainder of the year. Both titles are available on Amazon.com.

You can visit Geoff ’s Amazon Author Page and purchase both titles here:http://www.amazon.com/Geoff-Baggett/e/B01E2YZPPE/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1

SPONSORS NEEDED FOR JUNE 4 GRAVE MARKINGS - IMMEDIATE GOAL $245

The original headstone of Joseph Fontaine is over 200 years old and in a state of serious disrepair. The writing is barely legible and the stone has partially sunk into the ground.

The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter has procured a flat headstone (pictured above) to place in front of the original stone at a cost of $200. We have also purchased a separate PATRIOT stone for the Charles Kennedy Grave.

We are currently seeking sponsors to help pay for the expenses of these stones. For each donation of $25 we will send a letter of acknowledgement that will serve as your proof of monetary participation on the Patriot Grave Marking.

Gifts should me made to:

CHAPTER COMPATRIOT TAKES PART IN BATTLE OF MOORE’S CREEK BRIDGE COLOR GUARD EVENT

Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter “long distance” member Rick Sheets of Durham, North Carolina, represented the chapter at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge Commemoration in North Carolina on February 27.

Rick was participating in the weekend event as a sutler / living history demonstrator, showing his skills as a horner. He took some time away from his demonstration booth to present the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter’s wreath during the ceremony. We are proud that Rick represented our chapter at this national Color Guard event.

Rick is pictured above with Ricardo Perez, superintendent at the Moore’s Creek National Monument.

CST CHAPTER COMPATRIOTS REPRESENT AT THE KENTUCKY SOCIETY

On March 12 the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter achieved an important milestone in its short history. Chapter President Geoff Baggett was sworn into a dual leadership role in the Kentucky Society at Kentucky’s annual meeting in faraway Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Rev. Baggett was elected the state Chaplain, a spiritual leadership role reserved for ordained members of the Christian ministry. He was also elected state Vice-President, placing him in the line of succession to become President of the Kentucky Society in 2018. Baggett has also been asked to serve as Chaplain of the Central District of the SAR in 2016, representing the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia.

In addition to officer elections, the Kentucky SAR also presented state level awards at the recent meeting. The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter received the President’s Award, given to the most active chapter in the commonwealth. They also received recognition for sponsoring Kentucky’s winning poster in the 2016 SAR Elementary Poster

Contest. Chapter Vice-President Steve Mallory was also honored at the event. He received the coveted Meritorious Service Medal from the Kentucky Society for his work and leadership in the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter.

HORNBOOKS AND SCRIMSHAW FOR KIDS!!

On Tuesday, March 15, Durham, North Carolina, Compatriot and professional horner Rick Sheets taught a homeschool workshop on making Colonial hornbooks and scrimshaw at the Stagville Historic Site in Durham on Tuesday. The kids learned about the engraved powder horns and flintlock guns carried during the Revolutionary War. They also had the opportunity to see and handle examples of powder horns.

The students learned about other colonial items made from cow horn, such as the hornbook, cups and spoons, and combs. For the activity portion of the workshop, each kid printed their own hornbook paper on a printing press and assembled a hornbook to keep. They also engraved (or scrimshawed) a poker chip with their own design.

Rick is an awesome living historian and an incredible asset for the youth education and outreach initiatives of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter!

KENTUCKY SOCIETY POSTER CHAMPION!Kerrigan McManus of Southwest Calloway Elementary School is the

SAR Poster Contest Champion for 2016! Kerrigan is a student of our teaching partner Andy Davenport. He has required all of his classes to submit posters for a grade for the past two years. He is one of most faithful and successful partnering teachers.

Kerrigan’s prize for winning the state competition was a $200 cash award. In addition, her poster will be transported to the 2016 SAR Congress in Boston where it will be entered in the national competition.

Compatriots Jim Rudd, Steve Mallory, and Geoff Baggett made the presentation of the check and told Kerrigan about her win during a school-wide assembly on March 25.

RICK SHEETS AT HIGH POINT MUSEUM

Rick Sheets, our long-distance North Carolina compatriot, interpreted the historic uses of cow horn at the first Colonial Trades Day at The High Point Museum in Highpoint, NC on the 16th of May, 2016.

Rick enlightened and entertained several groups of enthusiastic school children. He set up an impressive display of his custom-made powder horns and other interesting artifacts.

He really enjoys showing the little ones the use of engraved powder horns during our Revolutionary War as well as the flintlock guns of that time. The public is always amazed at the variety of uses of horn … the first plastic!

PATRIOTS DAY - KENTUCKY VETERANS CEMETERY WEST IN HOPKINSVILLE ,KY

On Saturday April 16 over sixty Compatriots from nine chapters across three states united to celebrate Western Kentucky’s own version of Patriots Day, a holiday celebrated in New England to commemorate the “shots heard ‘round the world” at Lexington and Concord.

Compatriots presented twenty flags, read the names of every Patriot on the Christian County SAR Patriot Memorial located in the cemetery, and fired a flintlock salute in their honor. An incredible sixteen shooters took part in the salute. It was, by far, the largest event ever hosted by our chapter. We are grateful for the partnership offered by the John Manire Chapter in Hopkinsville that made it all happen.

REUBEN BROWNING GRAVE MARKING LEWISBURG - LOGAN COUNTY, KY

On Saturday April 23 twenty Compatriots from Kentucky and North Carolina journeyed to Logan County, Kentucky, to dedicate and mark a VA headstone in honor of Virginia Patriot Reuben Browning.

Browning was from Culpepper County, Virginia. He and his five brothers all served the Patriot Cause in Virginia. Reuben served in the regiment of one of his older brothers in the Culpepper County Militia, and was a registrant in the Culpepper Classes that provided volunteers for the Continental Army.

Later in life he migrated to Logan County, Kentucky, claiming lands and establishing a life there. He rose to prominence as a citizen and leader in the county and left behind a very lodge body of descendants, man who still live in the area.

Reuben Browning’s grave site still exists, but it is in a very remote area on a private, inaccessible farm. In order to provide a permanent, accessible, monument, descendants placed his VA headstone in a public cemetery approximately one mile from his burial site. The ceremony was held at this public cemetery site.

FORGOTTEN PATRIOTS HEADSTONE PROJECT

There are ten Patriots of the American Revolution who died in Trigg County and are buried in unknown, unmarked graves. It is our responsibility, as the Sons of the American Revolution, to insure that these Patriots are remembered and honored with permanent markers. Over the next two years we will begin to raise the funds to purchase ten granite markers to place in a prominent location (to be determined) in Trigg County. This is an ambitious project. To total cost for ten markers and a dedication stone will be approximately $2,500. We will begin receiving donations to this cause immediately and continue fundraising until the project comes to fruition. Each donation of $25 will be recorded as contributions eligible for the NSSAR Patriot Grave Marking Medal upon dedication of the markers.
