A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The obverse of the coin features: the BNB logo and the year “1879” on the strip; the nominal value “100 ЛЕВА” (100 levs), the year of issue “2014”, and “БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА” (Bulgarian National Bank) inscribed in circumference. The reverse features an image of St. Prophet Elijah in his heavenly chariot and an inscription “СВЕТИ ПРОРОК ИЛИЯ” (St. Prophet Elijah) in a semi-circle below it.

A brief annotation St. Elijah is one of the great Biblical prophets in the Christian tradition and, alongside Moses, one of the great figures of the Old Testament. He is revered also in Judaism, Islam and the Bahá’í faith. The narratives put St. Elijah’s birth in the 9th Century BC at the Gilead city of Tishbe east of the Jordan, hence his calling Elijah the Tishbite. St. Elijah was a prophet in the Kingdom of Israel under the reigns of Ahab, Ahaziah and Jehoram. He devoted himself to the true faith in God and fought the idol worship being encouraged by Ahab and his wife Jezebel who had instituted the cult of the pagan deity Ba’al. St. Elijah was a righteous man given to strict fasting and austere asceticism. This imbued him with great spiritual power that shone amid the darkness of his time. The prophet fearlessly defended the true faith and was spared death, ascending to heav-en in a fiery chariot drawn by horses of flame before the eyes of his disciple prophet Elisha.Bulgarian folk belief described St. Elijah, or Sveti Ilija, as a bringer of thunder. Master of the summer tempests and hailstorms, he can invoke drought, punish wicked people, and protect crops. Our forefathers believed that the sound of thunder was caused by Sveti Ilija riding his fiery chariot across the sky.The Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates the Holy Prophet Elijah on 20 July, Ilinden.

A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The coin obverse shows the back side of the violin, featuring real wood, the nominal value, an image of the Queen Elizabeth II with inscription under it, “Elizabeth II”, the name of the issuer, “Niue Island”, the fineness “Ag 999” and the year of issue “2014”. On the coin reverse there is a coloured image of the very famous stradivarius violin “LADY BLUNT” and the inscriptions: “Antonio Stradivarius”, “1770 – 1827”.

A brief annotation The Lady Blunt Stradivarius violin of 1721 is a violin made by Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona, Italy. The violin is named after its first known owner Lady Anne Blunt, daughter of Ada Lovelace, granddaughter of Lord Byron. The Lady Blunt is one of the two best-preserved Stradivarius violins in existence. It has survived, like the Messiah Stradivarius of 1716, in near-original condition since it has resided mostly in the hands of collectors and seen little use. This violin was sold at auction by Sotheby’s in 1971 for the then-record amount of £84,000 (US$200 000).In 2008 it was sold to the Nippon Music Foundation for over US$10 million in a private transaction. The Lady Blunt was sold by Tarisio Auctions on their 20 June 2011 online auction for £9.8 million (US$15.9 million), more than four times the previous auction record for a Stradivarius, held by the Molitor when it was sold for US$3.6 million in 2010. The proceeds will go to the Nippon Foundation’s Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. When it went up for sale it was called “the best-preserved Stradivarius to be offered for sale in the past century”.

A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

On the obverse and reverse there are images of the life, works and activities of Lithu-anian peasants, depicted with reference to motifs of the poem METAI (The Seasons) by Kristijonas Donelaitis. The obverse also features a stylized coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania, Vytis, surrounded by the inscriptions LIETUVA (Lithuania), 2014 and 50 LITŲ (litas). The reverse also features the sun, representing the earth’s natural cycle change, surrounded by the inscriptions: KRISTIJONAS DONELAITIS, 300.On the edge of the coin there is the inscription: JAU SAULELĖ VĖL ATKOPDAMA BUDINO SVIETĄ (The climbing sun wakes the world again).

A brief annotation K. Donelaitis is a Lithuanian poet of great importance and value. Only the hexametric poem The Seasons (Metai) and his six fables remained. He took the side of the low-est social class, considered peasants as his brothers, compatriots and friends. They were the ones who became the heroes of the epos The Seasons. The poet preached the idea of eternal return and cyclical movement. His “little sun” returns in spring and reaches its zenith, while in autumn it rolls on, all the while dictating the work and ac-tivities of the peasants. The whole epos is marked by the sign of eternal relevance, characteristic of classic literature.

The reverse emphasizes the know-how: on the background, the pattern represents the de-sign of the glass created for Tsar Nicholas II (Alexander II’s grandson), and the rich drawing of its foot. A blower drawn in a contemporary way forms a glass that appears in hollow on the coin. The face value is inscribed on this unit, using an octagon to draw the figure 0. One of those figures is colored, as a reference to Baccarat’s distinctive red octagon.

A brief annotation Monnaie de Paris, doyenne of French institutions, is celebrating its 1150th anniversary in 2014 with the launch of the “French Excellence collection”. A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The obverse of the commemorative coin features a silhouette of King Willem-Alexander in a refined calligraphy style. This used to be a security measure applied to bank notes. The reverse features a similar play of lines. The lay-out of the central face value is reminiscent of the old 100 guilders note. The text “200 Jaar de Nederlandsche Bank” is engraved into the outer edge. The geometrical waves in the background symbolize the passing of time. The waves contain tiny lettering that is only visible through magnification, similar to the system used for bank notes.

A brief annotation The Dutch Bank’s early years were made difficult by the slow acceptance of bank notes as a valid form of payment. It wasn’t until after 1850 that DNB became a true national bank, active throughout the country. During the first half of the 20th century, DNB saved our country from several financial crises. In doing so, its importance as a financial institution increased. This role was formalized after the Second World War. In 1952, it is also formally appointed banking su-pervisory. Later on, this task would be extended to include all Financial institutions. Nowadays, DNB also concerns itself with matters like low inflation and safe electronic payment. The Dutch Bank also holds the Dutch monopoly on issuing bank notes.

A brief annotation The R200 (1oz) pure-gold coin celebrates “20 Years of Democracy” in South Africa by com-memorating the first non-racial and democratic elections that were held in the country on 27 April 1994. Mr Mandela was elected President and inaugurated at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 10 May 1994. He led a troubled country and its people into a new future, built on the founda-tions of freedom and democracy. The new Constitution pointed towards a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous society based on justice, equality, the rule of law, and the inalienable human rights of all. Every year on the 27 April all South Africans celebrate past achievements and remember and reflect on the paths that led to this historic occasion.

Although the cultural heritage is too diverse to explore, there are some outstanding works of art that form our collective imagination and cultural identity.
