Welcome >> by Tom Kenney

Welcome to the Chapel’s 31st ministry year! What will change? What will remain the same? How will God stretch us as a church? How will He satisfy us with Himself in new ways? What remains the same: Our vision “Knowing His Joy, Changing His World.” We will pursue Him as our greatest joy, our treasure and pleasure. It is both a command and a promise that runs throughout Scripture. Psalm 37:4 is one example: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” The believer’s ultimate desire is God Himself, the cross the ultimate gift. We’ll also pursue world change as we follow Him in creating God Space locally and globally. We’ll do it with neighbors, with unreached people groups, with family and with friends at work. We’ll do it through our children’s and youth ministries. What will change: Our Prayer & Action Goals. Each year the Elders ask God to lead us in establishing goals for which we can all pray and to which we can all commit. They are one way we can respond to Hebrews 13:7: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” So, in year #31 we’ll see change through: » Working together. Get to know God and a few friends better by joining a discipleship group (3 or 4 folks) and participating in some

Dinners for 6.

» Worshipping God the Reconciler. Let Him restore a relationship or two. You’ll have Core Discipleship Courses and seminars that will help. Begin walking through the process early in the year.

» His Word coming alive. Let Him connect your head with your heart as you spend time in the Psalms. Write your own psalm this year.

» Witnessing locally and globally. Seek to create God Space with a local friend. Learn how our missionaries help people to know His joy. Send of our own to help reach an unreached people group.

A more detailed version of these goals and the biblical basis for each is available at www.pencomchap.com/#/welcome/prayer- action-goals. As the name indicates, these goals are not just for action. They are prayer guides. Please commit to praying that God would change us in these ways this year. Only He can do that. As you pray, listen for the unique ways He will lead you to pursue the goals. Share with a ministry leader or staff member creative ideas you come up with. Watching those ideas blossom is one of my greatest joys. The Elders, staff and ministry leaders are ready to have God stretch us and satisfy us in Himself. I hope you’ll join, bringing what only you can bring to the year. If you are new to the Chapel, please take pick up copies of Starting Point and Signposts to help you find out how to plug in. Happy 31st!

Men’s Ministry Discipleship >> by Brian Fields, PCC Elder & MM Team Leader

The primary reason that Christian men have difficulty is that they haven't been properly discipled. That's a pretty strong statement. Have you been invested in by another man? We believe that connecting with a few men, diving into God's Word can do that! We have been personally transformed as other men have built into us to make us look more like Christ and to walk with us. That is done in relationships. We want our lives to count and make a difference with our families, our neighbors and in our work. It can happen! Encouraging each other with God's Word plays a crucial role in fighting the good fight, keeping the faith and finishing the race (2 Timothy 4:7). Please contact a Men's Ministry leader to get connected. Brian Fields: [email protected] | Jonathan McClure: [email protected] | Doug Noffsinger: [email protected]

Women’s Ministry Discipleship >> by Jen Marshall, WM Discipleship Coordinator

“Will you disciple me?” The question is almost as intimidating as asking someone on a first date. But nine months ago I took a deep breath and popped the question. Since then, every week I’ve met together with another woman from PCC to share life and scripture. I pour out my heart to her and she graciously points me to truth. I ask questions about family, work, relationships and somehow — by the work of the Holy Spirit — she combines her experience and wisdom perfectly into the response I need. “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). I am grateful for a mentor who pursues Christ first in her own life, and who is willing to share that life with me. She will openly admit her imperfections and failures and then allows me to learn from her mistakes. And as I imitate her, we are both eternally grateful for a Savior who shared his perfect life with us. Whose perfect death allows us to be bonded together despite our sinfulness. If Christ was the first mentor, and we are to imitate Christ, shouldn’t we all be looking for opportunities to pop the question? Shouldn’t we all be looking for opportunities to say “Yes”? God Space at mom mom >> by Mabel Kenney, m2m Coordinator

Our mom2mom team showers young moms with hugs, laughs, warm breakfast casseroles and tender care for their babies. But we also strive to stimulate their minds with thoughtful conversation. Take a test with me. You’ve just heard a fascinating lecture on the synapses zinging in a child’s brain when he plays a musical instrument. Now, at your small group table, it’s your turn to answer a simple conversation starter, “Did you play a musical instrument as a child?” How would you make space for God in the pursuing conversation? Do you have the spiritual hope and social discipline to answer in a way that throws the conversation ball back? How’d you do? It’s not easy to keep throwing that ball back, is it? It’s all too easy to finish another’s sentence, to compose your answer before the other has even finished a thought. Mom2mom meets Tuesday mornings throughout the fall with challenging lectures on mommy topics, followed by small group discussions. We have about 60 moms, 75 kids and 15 PCC leaders who facilitate the table conversations. It’s loud, stimulating and fun. Please pray for us to offer low-risk, grace-filled places for young moms to wander. And pray for young moms to wander right into Jesus’ presence! Fall Lecture Series topics: Your Brain On Music | Protecting Your Children from Online Predators | So You Want a MVP? Wisdom for Kids’ Sports | Flame Retardants & Kids | Math & Science Education In Virginia | My Kids Need Character, Not Success | Hope for Depression | When Helping Hurts | Communication for Blended Families | Finances for Young Families | If I’d Known Then What I Know Now
