10 TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

MAKING SURE THAT IFS EMPLOYEES HAVE  VALID HEALTH CARDS

1. SURVIVE HOLIDAY PARTIES.Never attendapartyonanemptystomach - rather grab a small healthy snack before you go. When you get to the party, don’t rush to eat - instead socialise and settle into the festivities before you eat.

2. EAT MINDFULLY.Thebuffettableisaninvitationtoeatallyoucan, sofirstcheckoutwhatisavailable, choosethefoodsyoureally want to eat, and then move away. Eat slowly, focusing on enjoying the taste and smell of each bite.

3. BALANCE UNHEALTHY MEALS WITH HEALTHY ONES.Trytolimit yourself to one unhealthy treat or meal per day. Make sure your othermealsarehealthybyeatinglotsoffruitandvegetables.

4. BE PICKY. Don’t deny treats, but only eat treats that you really love. Starting the festive season with the intention of eating salad all day and not having any treats is setting yourself up for failure. Instead, avoid“wasting”caloriesonnon-favourites.

5. BE A SNACK SMUGGLER. Travelling, shoppingandalackofroutine during the holidays can lead to skipping meals, or grabbing convenientfastfood.Tokeepyourappetiteincheck, neverleavehome without a snack. Fruit makes a refreshing, no-fuss snack.

6. MAKE WATER YOUR MVP (MOST VALUABLE PLAYER).Jazzwater up with lemon, cucumber or even fruit. Water and tea can helpfillyouuppreventingholidayovereatingorevenoverindulginginalcoholorfizzydrinks, bothloadedwithcalories.

7. AVOID AFTER-DINNER NIBBLES. Thosechocolatesandbiscuits that come out after an indulgent lunch or dinner are unnecessary calories and will probably only make you feel even more uncomfortably full. Rather keep them for another time.

8. HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO. If you do have one of the many sweet treats on offer, keep your portion size as small as possibleandchoosethehealthiestofwhatyoucanfind.Generallyfruit-based cakes and desserts are better choices, so an apple tart would be a better option than a chocolate cake.

9. START YOUR DAY WITH A WHOLESOME BREAKFAST.Trytoeat a low GI breakfast like oats, wholegrain cereal or wholewheat toastwithavocadooreggs.Thiswillkeepyousatisfieduntillunch,it will keep your sugar levels stable and hunger pains at bay - but moreimportantly, italsostopsyou fromsnackingonsugarytreatsthat are empty calories with little nutrients.

10. GET MOVING WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COLLEAGUES. Spend quality time with friends, family and colleagues these holidays. Make the most of the warm weather and plan to do something where you can be active together. Meet for a walk on the beach or get a group together and go for a hike. Go for a swim, or get everyone involved in a post-lunch stroll.

PANGOLINPOPULATION: UNKNOWNThe pangolin is the world’s only scaled mammal.Unfortunately, some falsely believe its scales have medicinal properties. Demand for scales has made thepangolin themost traffickedmammalonEarth.Twospeciesofpangolinarealreadycriticallyendangered in Asia because of this. Unfortunately, pangolins are hard to census because they are solitary and nocturnal. Researchers don’t have reliable data on their numbers.

AFRICAN ELEPHANTPOPULATION: 415,000Between 5 and 10million elephants roamedAfricain1930.Like thepangolin, elephantsarevulnerableto poachers. Unlike the pangolin, African elephants have incredibly strong family relationships. They’reastonishingly intelligent and compassionate, and poaching creates innumerable elephant orphans. It takes elephants more time to reproduce in comparisontoothermammals.Theygivebirtheverythree to six years, and it takes nearly two years to carry a single calf to term. It’s harder for elephant populations to rebound from threats because of this.

LIONPOPULATION: 23,000Thelionkingdomshrinkseveryyear.Habitat loss isits greatest threat; as human populations increase, lions are forced into smaller territories that cannot sustain their numbers. Tanzania is home to morelions than Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia combined; its land is critical for the survival of the species.

CHEETAHPOPULATION: 6,700Theworld’s fastestmammal isalsooneofnature’stoughest independent mothers. Female cheetahs live in solitude, raising their young, hiding them from predators and hunting for them alone. While cheetahs are officially listed as vulnerable, many inthe wildlife conservation community think they should be considered endangered. Researchers know of roughly3,500cheetahsandoptimisticallyestimateacomparable amount live in similar habitats that have not been surveyed.

AFRICAN WILD DOGPOPULATION: 6,600The world’s most effective predator is one of themostrarelyseensafarianimals.Theirpacksrequirelots of protected space because they can range over 25milesregularly.Theyareparticularlyvulnerabletohabitat loss and human encroachment.

BLACK RHINOPOPULATION: 5,000The lion, leopard,Africanbuffalo, endangeredblackrhino, and elephant make up the legendary Big Five. Tanzania isoneofthe lastplacesonearthyoucanspotthemallinoneday.Thedeclineoftheblackrhinomirrors the elephant; there could have been up to 850,000blackrhinosduringmostofthe20thcentury,but demand for rhino horn reduced their numbers to the several thousand that exist today.

MOUNTAIN GORILLAPOPULATION: 880Seeing wild mountain gorillas is one of the greatest treasures in the world of wildlife viewing. Likeelephants, gorillas have extremely strong family connections. Some rangers have devoted their lives toraisingjuvenilegorillasorphanedbypoaching.Theremaining populations that exist live in forested land on a mountain range that stretches through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. National and international laws protect mountain gorillas from being hunted or captured everywhere they exist. It is the only species of great ape with an increasing population.

ADDAXPOPULATION: <100A white-furred, desert-loving antelope, the addax is nearly extinct in the Saharan deserts. Theirnumbers continue to dwindle due to poaching and the ecological disturbance caused by oil exploration. An aerial survey in 2016 found just three remaining addaxes. While 100 may still exist, researchers simply can’t be sure.
