Cofely Airport Services

Managing a modern airport can be a delicate balancing act. While the safety and comfort of passengers is of paramount importance, the entire airport ecosystem needs to operate in a streamlined and cost-effi cient way.

Airport managers have to address the needs of passengers, airlines and other customers, all while struggling with rising costs and improving comfort and safety. They need to provide an energy-effi cient and sustainable public service – all while increasing revenue.

And yet, more challenges lie ahead. The expected increase in aircraft movements and passenger volumes require technically superior designs and highly effi cient systems for handling both passengers and baggage. Furthermore, all these systems must be scalable to face the future of air traffi c.

In order to meet these requirements, a wide variety of technical systems and operational processes have to work together seamlessly. That’s why airport managers look for customized and long-term O&M services. They look for partners that offer total solution packages, ensuring quality, cost-effi ciency, reliability and scalability.

A FLEXIBLE PARTNER FOR CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT

In 1998, Cofely Airport Services signed its fi rst contract with Aéroports de Paris (ADP) for the maintenance of the baggage handling system in Terminal 2. Today, we handle the preventive and corrective maintenance for more than 110 passenger boarding bridges as well as servicing all the 400 Hz GPUs at the airport.

A few years ago, we were asked to assist in the installation of boarding bridges at the new satellite terminal which was facing critical timing issues. By working double shifts, Cofely Airport Services was able to mobilise, at very short notice, suffi cient staff to complete the assignment within two months. The terminal was opened on the scheduled date.

Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is France’s largest airport, situated only 25 kilometres from Paris. This location makes it one of the world’s major aviation hubs.

Since the percentage of transfer passengers is very high at Abu Dhabi Airport, smooth baggage transfers between gates and terminals are of critical importance. No wonder Cofely Airport Services provides 24/7/365 service to support the transfer system, with runners for bag jams and handheld scanning. Apart from the preventive, predictive and reactive maintenance system, we also provide a 24 hour hotline to enable the immediate dispatch of experienced Airport Systems Technicians should any problems occur.

Cofely-Besix Facilities Management (CBFM) has signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) for the maintenance of the Transfer Baggage System at the airport’s Terminal 3. In collaboration with ADAC, Cofely Airport Services thus enables the fl ag carrier Etihad, as well as other operators, to offer the shortest possible layover times for connecting passengers.

Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) is the second largest airport in the United Arab Emirates and one of the fastest growing airports in the world in terms of passenger volumes. It welcomes over 12 million passengers annually, a capacity that is expected to rise to 20 million by 2016.

>> We service the boarding bridges used by disembarking passengers to enter the terminal, while their baggage travels through the baggage handling system to the carrousel, all of which are also managed and maintained by us.

>> Passengers enter a terminal building where all the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical installations are maintained by Cofely Airport Services, while the aircraft is provided with GPUs, 400 Hz power supplies and pre-conditioned air supply, also maintained by our services.

>> Departing passengers and their baggage pass through Cofely Airport Services maintained security scans while their baggage is tagged, security scanned, sorted and directed through the aircraft loading system.

FULL SERVICE PACKAGE AT BRUSSELS AIRPORT

The main challenge in this case was the fact that the baggage handling systems in those terminals had been installed by different suppliers and were based on different IT solutions for baggage sorting. There were further constraints: in the system, only the IT component had to be replaced, ensuring that the PLCs controlling the mechanical parts of the system would not be affected; likewise, the upper level software in the system that handled fl ight information and allocation management should not be altered.

Cofely Airport Services was able to work within these constraints by using BagStage, a software solution developed in-house for baggage management. With the BagStage solution in place, Toronto Pearson International Airport is ready to face the future of air transport.

BagStage is Cofely Airport Services’ premium solution for baggage management, as seen in Cape Town, Moscow, Montreal, Kunming, Nice, Dublin, Quebec, Brussels and other major airports worldwide.

IT SOLUTION FOR BAGGAGE MANAGEMENT IN TORONTO

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is Canada’s largest and busiest airport. For the redesign of the IT component of their baggage handling system in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, the airport relied on the expertise of Cofely Airport Services.

Cofely Airport Services is now implementing an extended contract for baggage handling and boarding bridge operations in Boston Logan. At a certain point, Massport faced the challenge of ensuring that the Maintenance Reliability Programmes initiated by Cofely Airport Services in 2008 would continue to guarantee seamless service to passengers and airline operators. It therefore opted to extend the existing contract.

Cofely Airport Services made this possible by upgrading the traditional preventive maintenance system to a more effective Predictive Maintenance System, using our Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) known as ‘Maximo’. It allows the tracking and analysis of spare parts usage. This reduces both downtime and spare parts inventories and also brings down energy consumption, generating major savings for the airport operator.

EFFICIENT MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT AT BOSTON LOGAN

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is the 19th busiest airport in the United States. It is operated by Massport. With over 29.3 million passengers overall in 2012, it is New England’s major international gateway and a very active domestic airport.

MAINTENANCE & MANAGEMENT IN AMSTERDAM SCHIPHOL

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS) is the largest airport in the Netherlands and the 4th busiest in Europe. More than 50 million passengers passed through the airport in 2012.

Cofely Airport Services has signed a fi ve year maintenance and management contract with Schiphol Airport, covering the new structures on the airport site as well as strategic planning with the airport company.

All the expertise and experience of Cofely Airport Services will be brought to bear in Schiphol to optimise the reliability of the technical installations in all the airport buildings.

In 2011, Delta airlines called in Cofely Airport Services to handle complete facilities management at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Delta needed to improve passenger and baggage handling performance while containing costs. In order to achieve this, Cofely Airport Services implemented the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) known as ‘Maximo’.

This system was initially implemented at Newark, and will subsequently be rolled out within the entire Delta facility structure. Through systematic data capture and exploitation, Cofely Airport Services will decrease operating costs while improving the dependability of aging equipment, including Baggage Handling Equipment and Passenger Boarding Bridges.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT FOR DELTA AIRLINES IN NEWARK

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a major aviation centre in New Jersey, situated only eight miles from the Statue of Liberty. It is one of the three large hubs in the New York region – next to John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia. Delta Airlines is one of its largest airline customers.
