NARRATIVE
On 01-23-08 around 0700 hours Sgt Wood requested my assistance regarding a possibly armed suicidal subject She briefed me on the following
The subj ect in question was CHS student Brian Gilmore On 01-22-08 his mother Debbie Gilmore contacted police with concerns that Brian may have been involved in a burglary at the home of a family acquaintance KCSD handled the burglary during report 08-01683 Rifles and anununition were taken during the crime Brian had not been attending school regularly His whereabouts and his psychological state were unknown CDA PO also had information that Brian was involved in a theft at Sportsman I s Warehouse
I called Debbie and identified myself She had no new information on his whereabouts and told me the following
Brian lives wi th her and her twenty-two month old son at home Brian was despondent due to several events in his life He recently got in trouble for committing a theft in Spokane He was suspected of stealing from Sportsmans Warehouse on 01-22-08 during which he fled the scene Furthermore he was avoiding contact with his family Which was highly out of character for him
He felt socially outcast at school and He missed eighteen
days of school which was contrary to his normal standing as a good student He had recently researched firearms silencers online He has historically honored his commitments yet he failed to return home or call the night of 01-22-08
Debbie learned that a neighbor to the victim whose home was burglarized saw a black four door Taurus type vehicle drive to the victims home She dscribed Brians car which was a black four door Pontiac Grand Am similar in body style to the neighbors description

Report for Incident 08C02131
Debbie was staying with relatives She gave me permission to search her home I gave the front desk Brians information and vehicle description They prepared an attempt to locate broadcast regarding Brian Officers were deployed to Brians work and to both high schools
Captain Clark Officer Harris and I went to Debbies home We entered through the back door and announced ourselves No response was received Captain Clark and I searched the residence Brian was not present I called Brian s cell phone and left a message asking him to check in with me or his Mother
We left the residence I returned to the PD and prepared flyers for distribution to patrol and surrounding agencies No new word was coming in on Brian I received word that Debbie had told KCSD Deputies the night before that she was conerned about Brian committing a school shooting During my conversations with her she did not mention such beliefs I called her and directly asked if she thought Brian was capable of committing such an act She replied no adding that he was a gentle young man
Debbie had returned home I met her there She told me about her phone conversation with Brian on 01-22-08 after police had called her about the Sportsmans Warehouse theft During the their conversation she asked him why he was behaving this way and asked him to turn himself in Brian surprised her by hanging up on her She stated he would never do something like that She added Brians troubles seemed to start around Thanksgiving 2007
We looked over Brians computer history Debbie gave me his e-mail and Craigdist passwords He had a good deal sales correspondence and activity both accounts
One of the messages in his e-mail referred to a guitar he had for sale A potential buyer offered a $60000 snow board in trade for the guitar indicating the guitar was of substantial value I asked Debbie about the guitar she did not know about it I reviewed some of the items Brian had for sale on Craigslist They included iPods iPod accessories and gaming equipment Debbie told me Brian did not have the money to obtain the items he was selling
She gave me two homemade bags which she referred to as magic bags She believed they related to some of the online searches Brian performed regarding shoplifting The bags were flat and lined with tinfoil and tape presumably to defeat anti-theft sensors at store exits She found the bagS in Brians room
I called Detective Rick Yeend with the Idaho State Police and requested assis~ance with Brians phone records Later Detective Yeend called back advising the last tower accessed by Brians phone was in the Shoshone County area earlier in the morning
Officer Damon Jones broadcast that he had Brian detained in the north lot of Lake City High SchooL Sgt Wood requested I respond to the school Debbie was next to me and able to hear the radio updates about Brian She was relieved he was located I told her to keep her cell phone on and went enroute to the school
Upon arrival Officer Damon Jones had Brian detained in his back seat captain Clark was present and briefed me He told me a rifle was found in the front

seat Brian was walking toward the school with a backpack when he was detained Brian had asked officers something to the effect of why didnt you guys just let me do what I was going to do
KCSD Detectives steve Stuart and Todd Jackson were also on scene Captain Clark tasked me to work with them regarding their burglary and the CoeurdAlene charges involving Brian
Officer Jones transported Brian to the PD Detectives Stuart and Jackson spoke wi th Brian in interview room one Room ones recording equipment was not functioning Room two was occupied Shortly later room two became available and I moved the interview to room two I joined the interview which was recorded from this point I saw a Miranda form signed by Brian amongst Detective Stuarts paperwork
Detective Stuart and I led the questioning Brian told us the following
He admitted committing the county burglary and referred to the horne owner as Jeffrey who was a friend of the family He took four rifles amrnuni tion clothing medication and some cash He took the rifles for their value because he planned on possibly heading to California
One of the rifles was a shotgun He loaded it with three shells and pumped one shell into the firing chamber and put the safety on He planned on using the shotgun to commit suicide but later decided against it due to the gruesome scene it would cause He decided to kill himself by overdosing instead He took some clothes including some carnoflauge wear because he planned on spending the night in his car and it was cold
After the burglary he spent the night in Kellogg at a hotel He left around 0930 hours 01-23-08 and drove to the grocery store on Sherman Avenue He bought some Nyquil and sleeping pills He bought the additional medication to make sure he had enough to overdose on
He formulated a plan to cornrni t suicide The plan involved parking his car at Lake City High School and walking to the United Methodist Church across the street where he is a member He was going to climb in to the attic of the church and overdose on the medications
He had prepared by emptying his school backpack and putting a blanket the medications a book and his journal inside He explained that he wanted to be gone (by committing suicide) by the time his car was found at the high school He felt parking at a location other than the church would grant him the necessary time to enter the church attic finish his book complete some journal entries and overdose on the medications He thought gaining such time was necessary because he believed police were looking for him due to the theft at Sportsman I s Warehouse on 01-22-08
Detective Stuart challenged Brian on the fact that he had entered the school parking lot with a loaded weapon Brian replied he was not planning on harming anyone but himself He added theres no one I dont like that much He was sitting in his car when he saw Officer Jones pull in He got out of his car with his backpack and walked towards the school in an attempt to look like a regularly attending student

Throughout the conversation Brian repeatedly referred to himself as a worthless failure He felt his past deeds were not things he could overcome He felt like a burden to his family and believed they would be better off without him even with the disconcerting manner in which he planned to end his life
Detective Stuart and I actively engaged Brian in discussions to the contrary We talked about the despair we have witnessed related to suicide and the emptiness families are left to bear We spoke about the reliance a family has upon young men of his age and the hopes related to his future Brian was open to our advice but his demeanor was that of quite low self-esteem
I told Brian I knew about his Craigslist sales and the magic bags He told me he never used the magic bags but learned about them on the internet He admitted his Craigslist sales involved some stolen property He added the following
On 01-22-08 around 1200 hours he drove to Sportsmans Warehouse in CoeurdAlene He went there intending to steal merchandise He was alone and had $20000 He went to the paint ball section and selected two components for his paint ball gun He walked to what he referred to as a blind spot in the camera system and concealed the items in his sweatshirt He went and selected some beef jerky which he paid for at the register He noticed store personnel gathering near the exit including one male employee who had his hand on an exit door He felt his concealment was detected and ran out the doors and to his car and sped away He put the stolen parts in a keyed safe in his car
Later his mother called him after police called her about the theft He felt there was no reason to try and make things right because he was already in substantial trouble He went on the run and drove to Jeffreys house where he committed the burglary He left his little brothers car seat there I asked him why he would leave something that would identify him He replied because he was confident he would not be around for it to matter He confirmed he left Jeffreys house with the loaded shotgun in his front seat bull I asked him what he w~uld do if he inadvertently ran a stop sign and police tried to stop him He replied he would not have stopped because he was already in trouble for his thefts and the rifles
I asked him about other crimes He added the following
On 01-19-08 around 1600 hours he drove to the Sportsmans Warehouse in Spokane He was alone He went to the paint ball section selected a $50-60 14 Tippmann barrel and concealed it in his left pant pocket with his shirt over it He selected some paint balls which he purchased He left without paying for the barrel which was now in a basket in his room
Sometime around Thanksgiving 2007 he went to Pac-Sun at the Silver Lake Mall and selected two baseball type hats He ran out of the store with them and a female employee chased him but he got away The hats were currently in a bag along with eight others in the back of his car The other hats were from Zumies in the Spokane Valley Mall He stole the other hats from Zurn1es without being detected around the same time frame
He has stolen other items such as batteries and vitamins These items were currently in a pillow bag in his room at home He stole them from stores like Fred Meyer and Alberstons

Report for Incident OBC02131
He stole a Taylor Acoustic 410 quitar from his church He used his student ID card to defeat the lock on an office door where the qui tar was stored This was the qui tar I had seen earlier from his cQmputer correspondence
I showed Brian his wallet which officers had taken from him when he was detained It had enough cash in it that it was thick and hard to close He admitted some of the cash was from what he stole at Jeffreys and some sales of stolen property on Craigslist More follow up will be required to identify the stolen property Brian sold online
I asked him why commit thefts when money is readily available He told me he started stealing about the time he started taking his medications late last year Brian did not blame his medication but stated he had not been feeling like himself since taking them He added they made him feel anxious and claimed he stole out of boredom related to the anxiousness He went on to say some of the books he reads support shoplifting
Detective Stuart obtained written consent from Brian to search the Pontiac Detectives Stuart and Jackson left the interview room and Detective TenEyck assisted them in the search
There were three rifles and ammunition found in the trunk of Brians car Allmiddot three rifles were still in the storgage cases None of the rifles were loaded No school maps tactical gear or other prepatory materials related to an armed assault were found in the car
I continued the interview with Brian I aggressively re-challenged him on the fact he had entered the school parking lot with a loaded weapon I implored him to reveal the truth about any plans he for a school shooting including any specific targets he had Brian was adamant and consistent in regards to his previous statements and reasons for parking at the school He reiterated his complete lack desire to hurt anyone other than himself
Brians adamancy about harmful plans relating only to himself continued He brought up the subj ect of a polygraph test and volunteered to take one wi thout prompting or suggestion I passed him on to Sgt Coby Langley the department polygrapher Brian passed the examination
Debbie and her mother came to the PD Detective TenEyck and I discussed Brians case with them The discussion included recommendations on how the family might be able to help Brian see his self-worth
Detectives found some personal writings in Brians car I restarted the interview and questioned him about the writings He explained one as an Epic Poem he wrote for school and work He stated it was in humor and about how kids can get the best of him in a good way Some entries in his journal exemplified his low self esteem
I explained to Brian each of the charges he was facing I thanked him for being honest about his actions and turned him over to Detective Spranget for transport to PSB Brian was booked in for two counts of Burglary (Jeffreys home and Sportsmans Warehouse) one count of Grand Theft (related to Jeffreys home) and one count of Possession of a Dangerous Weapons on School Grounds

LT Calderwood went on to say Brians mom called concerned her son may try to harm someone as ammunition was also taken in the burglary (County case 08-01683)
I responded to the PD to follow up To air on caution extra patrol was given to Lake City High School and Coeur d Alene school An attempt to locate was given for Brian
At about 1030 hours Brian was located and detained by Officer Jones (KS2) I
was asked to respond to the PD to assist with the investigation due to weapons located in Brians vehicle
At the PD I assisted Sheriffs Detectives Steve Stewart and Todd Jackson I assisted Detectives Stewart and Jackson doing a consented search of Brians vehicle The vehicle had been delivered to the PD by Schaffers Towing
A Remington 12 gauge shotgun was located by Detective Stewart in the vehicle near the front seat The shotgun had three live roundsone being in the chamber Detective Stewart made the weapon safe

BRIAN ATTENDS CHS
At about 0430 this date I received a call from LT Calderwood concerning Brian Gilmore a senior at CHS I know Brian from prior contacts LT Calderwood stated the Sheriffs Dept had responded to a burglary in the County He said about three rifles were taken and Gilmore was the suspect LT Calderwood stated the victim was a relative
Upon continuing the search I took a Journal misc paperwork Computer thumb drive and $45500 in cash from Brians wallet as cash was also taken in the county burglary (see attached inventory sheet)
Three other rifles and ammunition were located by Detectives Stewart and Jackson and they took control of that property as well as a large jar with misc change inside The three rifles were located in the trunk unloaded and in gun cases
I also located two Tipman Parts Kits for repairing paint ball guns These were in regards to a theft from Sportsman Warhouse on 012208 I had received a call from Report Specialist Michelle Fisher She told me Loss Prevention Officers at Sportsmans Warehouse had video and obtained the plate number of Brians vehicle in regards to the theft of the two Tipman Kits
I spoke to Deputy Stewart in regards to the Kits He said when he interviewed Brian he confessed to entering Sportsman Warehouse on 012208 with the intent to take the two kits
r had spoke to Debbie Gilmore in regards to this theft after talking to Fisher She told me she would attempt to have Brian contact me to clear up the theft issue This conversation took place on 012208 at about 1245 hours Brian never contacted me
Detective Todd also interviewed Brian (see his report 07C02131) Brian was booked at PSB for City and County charges (see attached copy of booking sheet)
I spoke to Debbie Gilmore at the PD She responded to Schaffers and paid the tow bill I gave her a copy of the items r had taken as evidence and released the car to her
Report for Incident 08C02131

Mentioned Detectives Steve Stewart Todd Jackson KCSO 08-01683 Debbie Gil~ore 660-4956 (mother of Brian)
I spoke to Debbie Gilmore at the PD She responded to Schaffers and paid the tow bill I gave her a copy of the items r had taken as evidence and released the car to her
Report for Incident OBC02131
seat Brian was walking toward the school with a backpack when he was detained Brian had asked officers something to the effect of why didnt you guys just let me do what I was going to do
KCSD Detectives steve Stuart and Todd Jackson were also on scene Captain Clark tasked me to work with them regarding their burglary and the CoeurdAlene charges involving Brian
