Codes and Conventions of Channel 4 Advertisement: The Channel 4 logo is always on the right side of the

advertisement and mostly in the centre of the right side but sometimes at the top.

There is a banner on the left side at the bottom with the documentary title and the time/date it will be shown. The tagline can also be written here but can also be placed separately at the top left.

The title, tagline and time/date are always shown. The advertisement is landscape. It consists of one dominant image which anchors meaning to

the documentary. There is a limited amount of text. Often placed at the bottom of newspapers. Channel 4 font featured in all of their advertisements. Channel 4 logo featured in all advertisements and can vary in

colour. Simple Photoshop, not over complicated. Sometimes irony is shown.

Examples of Channel 4 Print Adverts:

Red banner in the bottom right-hand corner.

Title larger than the information, in the Channel 4 font and bottom right. Information and date/time

underneath the title in the same style but smaller font.

Channel 4 logo, placed in the centre on the right. Colour matches the banner.

Great wall of China, famous for it’s size, emphasises the amount of ‘stolen children’. The one simple photo which is relevant and reflective of the documentary and it’s message.

Simple Photoshop of missing children posters. Lots of different posters occurring throughout the entire ‘Great Wall’ again emphasising and drawing attention to the issue that the documentary is addressing.

Title of documentary placed at the top left of the advertisement, this is different to the typical conventions of Channel 4 advertising. But the title is larger than the rest of the information which fits into the conventions usually seen in print adverts.

Channel 4 typeface used throughout.

Tagline placed underneath the documentary title in a smaller sized font.

One main photograph –a head and shoulder shot of celebrity Alan Carr-, very little Photoshop editing and manipulation.

Channel 4 logo, larger than usual and taking up almost the entire of the right side of the advertisement. Showing variation in the conventions of print advertisement.

Title of the programme placed in the bottom right corner over a banner which is solid white matching the image not drawing too much attention but enough.

Title larger than information, making it more of a focus.

Date that the season will begin and details that it is a season and what it is about (care system).

Channel 4 logo in the middle of the right-hand side of the advertisement

Simple Photoshop editing to express the message of ‘forgotten children’ as the people around the boy are rushing on with their ordinary lives and not stopping to look and help the child who is being swallowed up by the ground/world.

Just one main image -a long shot focusing on the child- with the use of Photoshop to anchor meaning and represent the programme.

Other types of print advertisements: ITV 1

ITV 1 logo in the top right corner, however, can sometimes be placed in other corners.

One main photograph with small manipulation – a mobile phone turned into a grenade- to anchor meaning.Simple ITV1 typeface, title of the documentary stands out by being larger and in bold. Information below to intrigue the audience smaller than the title but bigger than the date and time produced beneath it.

Time and date the programme will be shown.

Six different images to create one main image through Photoshop editing. Shown to reflect work VS home and how their life changes in different situations/aspects.

Two main characters in the centre so that the focus is on them, long shot to show the variety of environments and situations the audience can expect them to be in.ITV 1 logo in

the top left corner.

Title of the programme in a larger font than the rest of the information to stand out.

Time and date that the programme will be shown.

Programmes’ sponsorship.

BBC:One main photograph – a long shot of Ian McEwan in a field appearing as though he is in deep thought- to reflect the documentary and what it is about.

Simple editing using a filter for a two-tone colour effect to reflect the process of thinking.

Main BBC logo on the right side of the advertisement but faded and letters cut to blend in with the photo this shows the relationship of the channel with the documentary.

Separate BBC FOUR logo to represent the BBC channel that the documentary will be shown on.

Documentary title at the top on the bottom left of the advertisement in a larger font than in information about the documentary.

More 4:One main image –long shot of soldiers with clown faces running from a bomb with an injured soldier- the use of the clown faces emphasise their facial expressions of distress and terror. Irony used as the clown faces reflect the aim of the documentary titled ‘Iraq: The Bloody Circus’ therefore anchoring meaning to the documentary.

More4 logo in the bottom right corner.

Title in the bottom left corner in a larger typeface than the information below it using the same font throughout to connect with the channel.

Information about the documentary including date and time and the fact that it is a ‘week long season’ and mentions the starting topic that the first show will be about.

One man image –long shot of gravestones on Morecambe Bay- representing the ‘ghosts’. Gloomy lighting and dark colours to reflect the topic, anchors meaning to the programme. More4 logo in

the bottom right corner.

Title in a larger, but the still the same, font than the information below it. In the colour green showing relation to the channel More4.

Information about the ‘drama’ in the bottom right corner in white (not taking away attention) explaining that it will look at the topic of Modern Slavery and that it is by ‘Nick Broomfield’.
