COD is a parameter that lets us evaluate the pollution levelcaused by organic and inorganic substances of awaterway (wastewater or surface water).

The abbreviation COD stands for the chemical oxygendemand for oxidation of substances dissolved andsuspended in water (COD: Chemical Oxygen Demand). Bydetermining the COD it is possible to proportionchemically oxidable substances with energy oxidants suchas potassium bichromate in a strongly acidic solution.

The acid environment is caused by the presence ofconcentrated sulfuric acid. Both inorganic compounds and organic substances canbe oxidized. This determination allows us to also detectorganic substances using the equivalent biological method(BOD: Biological Oxygen Demand), such as, for example, cellulose.Since oxidation takes place in drastic conditions, it is morecomplete than biological oxidation, and as a consequencethe COD value of a given sample is, in most cases, higherthan the corresponding BOD value

    Thermoreaction (digestion) of a sample

The sample digestion phase is one of the most importantsteps in many chemical reactions. Digestion is conductedin order to convert low-solubility compounds orsubstances present in the form of aggregates into solublecompounds, to degrade organic substances into inorganicmolecules, or to eliminate interfering substances andsolubilize metallic ions. Digestion takes place by addingdecomposition reagents to the sample and thencontrolling the temperature of the mixture prepared thisway.

    Thermoreactors

    ECO series thermoreactors

Velp Scientifica programmable thermoreactors are acutting edge solution as they are fit for meeting themost diversified temperature control needs.

ECO thermoreactors have been particularly studiedfor COD analysis and for preparing samples by wayof wet digestion for determining metallic and non-metallic elements in organic and inorganic materialssuch as minerals, alloys, animal feeds, soils, sediments and organic tissues.

The solutions Velp offers are able to ensure a highdegree of accuracy and repeatability of the results.

Velp Scientifica thermoreactors combine perfectlywith Macherey-Nagel Nanocolor kits for analyzingparameters such as COD, nitrogen and totalphosphorus, metals, hydrocarbons, AOX and TOC.

Velp Scientifica is infact the Macherey-Nagel officialpartner for Italian market.

When used in combination with the Nanocolor

Macherey-Nagel kits for analyzing COD (COD 40,60, 160 and 1500), Velp Scientifica thermoreactorsare recognized with approval of conformity assatisfactory for the ST-COD method Calculation ofthe chemical oxygen demand for water quality ISO15075.

    COD in 30 minutes!

Thanks to the introduction of the new temperature of160C, the thermoreactors ECO series let youanalyze the COD in just 30 minutes.

The ECO 8 and ECO 25 thermoreactors let you run testto determine parameters such as, for example, COD andnitrogenous and phosphorated compounds, in total safetyand reliability conditions that are ensured by the test tubecover, protection on the heating block and safetythermostat. It is possible to set 5 different working temperatures (70, 100,120, 150 and 160C) and working time in minutes (30, 60,120 and continuous) with an acoustic signal and automaticswitching off at the end of cycle.

The heating block made of aluminum offers optimumthermal homogeneity at all of the selected temperatures.Heating block temperature is controlled by PID logicmicroprocessor.
