Quashie River Sink Cave - *Extreme*
The excitement of this exploration begins immediately
with an exhilarating 150 foot climb where ropes and
small hand-rails are required just to reach the cave en-
trance. The entrance of the cave is guarded by 20 foot
waterfalls and crystal-clear swimming pools as the omi-
nous black mouth of Quashie Cave beckons only the
bravest to enter its depths. Once inside visitors are

crabs and other small creatures that live in complete
darkness scurry through the waters and past visitor’s
feet. This tour is physically challenging and recom-
mended for experienced outdoor adventurers ONLY. This tour is at your own risk!

Email sent to Tour Administrator Mel Brown
Hello Mel,
What a fantastic time we had today on the "Farm
Tour". We found it amazing that so much could be
grown on such a small space. The rest of us could
learn a lot about the stewardship of natural re-
sources that characterize the Jamaican farmer.
Mr. Robe did an outstanding and entertaining job of
explaining everything to us. This tour makes
our Jamaican vacation complete. We will be telling
our friends about our great time!

Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency (STEA)
Mission Statement To promote development of the Parish of Trelawny in Jamaica, and its environs by im-
plementing environmental conservation and economic opportunity projects.
Vision To develop institutional capacity such that STEA is financially stable and can have a
long-term environmental and community development impact in South Trelawny and
its environs through discrete, integrated project activities in keeping with the mission of
the organization.
Goals
To promote the conservation and protection of the Cockpit Country and Trelawny's
natural and built environment.
To develop community heritage and eco-tourism in Trelawny by highlighting cultural
traditions, historic artifacts and the biodiversity of Cockpit Country.
To develop and expand attractions like Trelawny Yam Festival to showcase the par-
ish, increase tourism, and boost economic opportunities for local residents.
To develop partnerships with government, the private sector, civic organizations,
grant funders and financial institutions in order to access and combine human re-
sources, technical expertise, physical facilities and finances in order to implement
projects efficiently and effectively.
STEA has developed an internationally recognized community and eco-tourism program
in Southern Trelawny called Cockpit Country Adventure Tours (CCAT), which utilizes the
resources of the Cockpit Country. Projects funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy,
Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, Global Environment Facility - Small Grants Pro-
gram and U.S. Peace Corps, among others, have improved the ability of CCAT to offer
professionally organized, guided tours through Cockpit Country. These tours generate
income for trained guides, chefs, homes offering Bed & Breakfast and other service
providers in the area, and help to sustain STEA's operations.
This project is in keeping with STEA's mission to provide alternative business activities
for local citizens that are consistent with conservation and sustainable use of the natu-
ral resources of Cockpit Country. The program has hosted thousands of visitors to the
area and is recognized by the Jamaica Tourist Board. STEA has recruited, trained and
certified over nearly 30 Tour Guides. An educational tour package has been developed
that that has brought thousands of students from across the island to observe biologi-
cal diversity in Cockpit Country and learn about the unique ecology of this area.

The Educational Tour Programme of the Cockpit Country Adventure
Tours offers students island-wide from Primary to Tertiary level an
opportunity to learn and be exposed to the diversity of the Jamaican
landscape and the unique characteristics of Cockpit Country Karst
Topography. The educational programme opens with a presenta-
tion on the areas ecology, rock weathering, flora and fauna and an

region and it’s benefits to the Jamaican economy. The presentation
is tailored to the academic level of the students being hosted. Stu-
dents then have a chance to explore the landscape with our trained
guides and experience the cave communities first hand to reinforce
the theoretical presentation.
In addition to being educational, the tour is also recreational with a
caving experience and great outdoor and underground adventure
culminating with a swim in the Mouth River. Following this holistic
experience the students are treated to a bush cooked meal and the
option for fun games before preparing for their journey home.
