FOREWORD Welcome to another Cockburn Cricket Club Yearbook. This yearbook is set to celebrate the achievements and the bloopers for the season that was 2002/2003. This Year Book will pay a special tribute to Cockburn Cricket Club’s greatest ever son, Owen Slater, who passed away last year. Owen will be remembered in our hearts forever!! This Yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look into player statistics, milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from all Captains, the Coach and the Committee on this season’s events. No doubt you will find a little humour on the way. The Yearbook is produced in a matter of days and is the tireless work of many people. This Year special recognition must go to Frank Legena, Martyn Ferris, Steven Camarda, Anildo Isidoro, Cesare Cecchi, Fedele Camarda, Glen Leckenby and Steven Lewis for giving up their time to work on this book. Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This Yearbook is a precious memory of the season 2002/2003. The publication will be looked upon in years to come as a historical year for the Cockburn Cricket Club. The Committee Season 2002/2003

THE BIG OWIE How do you sum up a bloke who meant so much to so many people and yet remained so humble? It’s been nearly a year since we lost our good friend and we haven’t stopped talking about the many fond memories that Owie has left us. We will never run out of things to talk about. Owie was & always will be a big part of the Cockburn Cricket Club. He was so unique in his ways. He was so dedicated to the club & it’s people. He is so respected.

I was asked to speak about Owen when he was presented with Life Membership of the Cockburn Cricket Club. This was a great privilege for me, and a very special night for Owie. He was so proud to have received such an honour. I had known Owen since my primary school days when he was Mr Slater, Kecci and Arrans old man. In 1987 a large group of us started playing for the Cockburn Cricket Club & in time we would become used to calling him Owie. He was part of the furniture down at Davilak, making contributions to the cricket & footy clubs at both junior & senior level. Everybody knew him.

What didn’t Owie do to help out where ever he could? He loved being involved & he loved helping others. I remember him boasting to me that he made his footy debut at the age of forty. He was a late starter, but he certainly made up for it & developed very good skills in both footy & cricket. Being Owie though, he would never stand in a young blokes way, so his playing career was limited. However, he always enjoyed a run in the nets & a kick with the boys. After the CFC folded he would continue to have a kick with Gero, Burnie & all the boys down at Davilak on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. He had great respect for these gentlemen. I still can’t help but spare a thought every time I run a lap.

It was at the Cockburn Cricket Club that I think Owie was most at home. He was so proud of the club. He won the best clubman award on numerous occasions. If it wasn’t for the fact that he was virtually banned from winning it to give someone else a chance, he would have won it every year & everyone knew that. Owie appreciated these awards, but they were not the reason he kept on going…that was just Owie. He was a committeeman, a player, Captain, Groundsman, scorer, he ran the nets, was registrar, he’d give you a rub down, you name it he did it. If we ever needed an emergency 12th man, he’d be into the back of his much-loved Jackaroo, grab his whites and be out there in a flash. We were always amazed at the things he’d pull out of the back of that Jackaroo when someone needed something.

He was however more to most of us than just a clubman. He was the most loyal friend that you could ever have. He was always there, he was always unique & he was good fun to have around. I remember the times when he would pick up a 16 year old Preston Holland for training in the Fairlane. More often than not, they would arrive with Owie in the passenger seat. He was the club DJ on many occasions. Whether it was a Players Review, Back to Bali night or The Roy Orbison Night we once held, he was there with the music. He loved watching others have fun. As a handyman he was second to none! He’d fix locks to fridges, paint walls, clean, sweep, you name it. Who could forget the light that he made to acknowledge the umpires signals.

I was very fortunate, that among other quality people I always had Owie at my side when I coached the CCC. His contribution was invaluable; whether it was to run the nets, register a player or more recently, to baby-sit my son James while I trained. How do you replace a guy like that? Through it all he’d have his trusty transistor radio by his side, usually tuned in to 6NR or 6IX. I just wanted to touch on what Owie mean’t to me and many of us that came to know him through our sport. There are so many other characteristics & gestures we could talk about whose received one of his famous personal music tapes? He loved his music! And what about

his magic finger trick? Above all you’d never want to forget to get your match ball back to him after the weekend! We all have our own special memories of time spent with Owen & it is with fondness that we can share these.

We were all deeply saddened by his sudden loss, but we can thank God that our lives are richer for having shared it with Owie. Our Club is very proud to have called Owen Slater one of our own. He is an important part of our history & tradition. We will never forget Owen Slater and will always carry his memory with us. He will always be with us!

PRESIDENT`S REPORT Welcome everyone I hope you have an enjoyable night and a good read. I said a lot at the recent AGM, and do not intend to repeat it here, however I do want to take this opportunity again to thank the committee’s of the last 2 years. They have worked very hard to continue the good work of previous committee’s in placing our club in a very strong financial and playing strength position. As a committee we agreed to focus on several key areas this year. These included (1) Development of closer links with the Junior Club (2) The retention of our existing player base and attraction of new players (3) Attraction and retention of appropriate coaching and development staff (4) Development and management of our facilities. These were achieved to various degrees throughout the season and are often not recognised by the general player base. To all those involved in these area’s, my thanks, and keep up the good work, it is not something achieved in one year. The tragic loss of a good friend and totally dedicated player, worker and ally to all members of the club, made us sit back and take a little bit more notice of what is required to run a successful club. “Owie” you are still sincerely missed, however your legacy and memory will continue on.

We only had 2 sides reach the finals this year, perhaps a reflection of an ageing stable player base, and the relevant inexperience of our new younger players. We need to continue to work and attract new players to ensure the ongoing playing success of our club. Our club depth was certainly challenged at times, and this is something that next year’s committee has already commenced addressing. Special thanks to the selection committee and captains, who all had high expectations for their sides, and endeavoured to do their best no matter what side they were given. It is at times a very demanding and thankless position and the Committee does appreciate your efforts. These are positions that require, but sometimes lack, the respect of all the players. I hope to see you all apply again next season.

To Peter “go to your room” Ago, I thank you sincerely for your efforts, honesty and contributions throughout the season. Coaching 50+ men, is not an easy job, and actual success is not always easily measured. Your approach to the sessions was beyond question, even when often we as a playing group let you down. Congratulations on a job well done.

There were also again significant changes to the committee this year, and thankyou to all as you attempted to carry out your duties to the best of your abilities. Some worked significantly harder than others, and I have personally thanked these individuals, however we all as a collective group need to learn from that experience.

Many people work tirelessly to ensure the continued success of our club and do the jobs that no one else wants, or even sometimes notice, these included: Martin Ferris, Claude & Monica Merendino, Dave & Kellie Kay, Jamie Bradley, Frank Legena, Joel Thomas, Steve Lewis and Sue Leckenby, whose time and effort was very much appreciated.

We did as a club, make significant inroads to the improvement of many of our younger players, the welcome addition of new members, the return of some more long lost golden oldies, becoming a legitimate liquor dispensing area and the updating of our facilities. We

have continued to progress as a Club, and I am sure you are proud of your membership, and that we can look forward to even better on field success next year.

To all concerned I thank-you once again for your efforts and diligence.

Best wishes and see you next season.

COACHES REPORT The Season That Was A passionate and proud cricket club with great personalities and outstanding cricket talent that probably has not reached its maximum potential, nevertheless a reasonably successful season culminating in the gut wrenching, hard fought grand final performance from the A Grade Side. They can all hold there heads up high on what was an outstanding effort. Highlights • The pre-season Northam trip (this is not a booze up) game, unfortunately or fortunately

rained off. • Clint Mitchell's semi final performance of 7 wickets • Justin Micales effort to take 6 wickets and enable 2B’s to make the semi final • Luke Smiths efforts with bat and ball in the grand final • 2B’s effort to make the semi final • Frank Legena’s 9 wickets v Kwinana • The smile on Jamie Pettit’s face when he takes wickets and make runs after a very quiet

start in his first season of cricket. Lowlights • Daniel Piromalli retiring 6 times. • Not playing the game of cricket in Northam pre season • Not being able to sing the club song on Grand Final day. Special thankyou to all captains in leading and portraying the spirit of the Club as for some of you it was a tough season due to player availability and rebuilding in some of the grades Thank you to all for the support and opportunity to coach the Cockburn cricket club . 1ST GRADE REPORT & FINALS Firstly I’d like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to Captain the 1st Grade side. It has been an honour and a privilege to have led this fantastic group of players and their efforts did the club proud. The club is going through a period of change, one that will see us grow even stronger and become even better. To have made it to a Grand Final under these circumstances was against the odds. Never the less we always believed that we would make a Grand Final and all shared bitter disappointment at not winning it. Hopefully the loss will only inspire us on to bigger and better things. Peter Agostino has brought a new breath of fresh air to the Club. He has great respect for the Cockburn Cricket Club and has a good understanding of where the club is at and what we need to do to improve. With a year under his belt he will only get better and success will follow. Thanks for the faith that you showed in me Peter. I’d also like to thank Matt Ferraro whose support as Vice Captain was very important to me. The selectors did a great job in giving players opportunities. We used more players in 1st Grade than ever before, managing to mould a very competitive balanced side. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite find a solution to our top order batting weakness as hard as we all tried. It is an area we must improve if we are to take the next step. There were some positive signs, but we need to find a high level of consistency in this area. Clinton Mitchell deserves special mention for as excellent season, which was capped off by winning the MVP award. Paul Mirco was again our highest run scorer and once again played some fine innings. Luke Smith showed what an exciting cricketer he is with impressive performances with both bad and ball, particularly in big matches. The most pleasing aspect for me was that everyone who played 1st Grade this season gave 100%. We are a proud club and we have great pride in the success of our 1st Grade side. We must look to keep improving and must be hungry for greater success. Our young players have to take up the challenge to make the 1st Grade side their own. In conclusion I’d again like to thank Peter, the committee, the selectors and people like Steve Lewis for their support during the season. Special thanks to Georgina and the boys for being very patient with me once again through the summer. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and hope that the club can build on what we achieved. I’m now looking forward to watching the next generation of 1st Grade cricketers take the club to greater success in the future! Fedele J Camarda Captain

2A GRADE REPORT The 2002/2003 season was one of some very good performances but mostly disappointing performances where we let ourselves down with both bat and ball. I would like to thanks the players in second grade who when on the field gave their best and tried hard for the team. What was for me disappointing and a little frustrating was the fact that during the season we played some 30 odd players and each game had consistently 3 to 5 changes a game. This simply made it hard to get some constancy in individual’s performances and really unbalanced the side and generally took the focus of the game itself. If we are going to continue to have a 2A side I believe that individuals at the club should put the club first and look at how many games a season they have off, and really commit to the season. If not we should field a social side and take the pressure of the players who play week in week out. I believe that the stand out player in second grade this season was Brent HITCHCOCK who gave 110% when asked and never gave up. In finishing we must remember that this club and this grade play out of their league. We played five A grade sides this year, which in my personal opinion is unfair when we lack the depth of players needed, we must consider that this affects the general moral of players when it is difficult to win games. I feel balancing this situation will bring back a winning feeling to the club and a healthier atmosphere. Jamie Bradley Captain

2B GRADE REPORT & FINALS Season 2002/2003 has been an interesting season for our 3rd grade (2B) side. There have been some very Good performances, but also some poor performances. Consistency has been a problem, especially with our batting. The bowlers have been the reason why our side did end up making the finals. In saying this we must realise we are playing against A and 2nd grade sides of other clubs, many of these sides having very good bowling attacks. There have been some great performances by individuals this year. Highlights this year include one of the best hundreds I have had the privilege to watch was that scored by Joe Covic. Glenn Leckenby also scored a great century this year at a crucial time in the match. The bowling department was ever reliable and everyone that bowled for the 2B's did a fantastic job. The pick of the bowlers this season were Martyn Ferris who was well backed by Zamien Sumich, Gary Bickley and Anthony Ricci. There were a few guys this year that played 2B’s that took the step up and performed very well. These include Gary Bickley, Nick Lange, Adam Goncalves. If these guys can take these performances through to next year then we will go along way in this competition. In closing, it has been a pleasure to play 3rd's this year. It has been exciting and the comradeship has been great. Everyone that played gave their all and as captain in the last few games I could not ask for any more. Hopefully every one of them will be back next year and we can go a few games further. There is nothing better than winning a Premiership. Next year that must be our aim. 3B GRADE REPORT Before I get started I’d like to clear a few things up. No, I am not related to Damien Drum and Yes, I did win a game of cricket this year (in 3rds). Firstly, thanks to the committee/selectors for allowing me the opportunity to have a crack at the captaincy. We were set a hard task this year playing 3B’s in that most teams we were up against were clubs second and third sides. I know this is no excuse because at Cockburn we are often playing at the highest level but at times we really did struggle to match the other sides, particularly with our batting. Continually week after week we rolled sides under 150 but in return were getting rolled for under a 100 or even under 70. It was disheartening to see all the good work we were doing in the field being undone by our poor batting performances. I honestly believe we would have won the majority of our games this year had we been able to put a few runs on the board. Next year we need to believe in ourselves and really value our wickets. There are some easy runs to be made out there it’s just a matter of hanging around and spending time in the middle. Enough of the Doom and Gloom, there were still a lot of positives to come out of the year. The re emergence of Dave Scott immediately springs to mind. Scotty really was the ‘Rock’ of the 4th grade side this year and stood up week after week but unfortunately rarely had the support he needed. Congratulations on your achievements this year Scotty in winning the MVP award, the batting averages and all rounder. Well done. The discovery of Steve Lewis is another. Lewie batted up and down the order all year and never once complained (handy bowler as well). A big score is in the wings for Lewie and he has two from two as a stand in captain (show off). This bloke typifies what we need at Cockburn. Keep up the good work Lewie. Many others deserve a special mention as well, the likes of Chucky Nadason who performs for this club year after year and this year being no exception. Chucky again takes out the bowling averages award, well done. Jamie Petit who I believe will go on to bigger and better things. Jamie’s confidence and ability grew with each game he played. Also, Johnny Stojan who didn’t put a foot wrong behind the stumps and also managed to take six catches in a match. Well-done Stogey. Also well done to Aaron Savage and Arelio Mollica who both had solid finishes to the season. I hope to see these two guys consistently scoring runs next season. Thanks to all the boys who played 3B’s this year and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Even though it wasn’t as successful as I had hoped, we bonded well as a team and shared in a lot of laughs through out the year. See you all next year. Richard Alvey Captain

5TH GRADE REPORT Season 2002/03 has drawn to a close. This season proved to be a tough and challenging task especially for the selectors. A contingent of over 30 players were required to fill the team for the various fixtures, I thank the selectors and coach for their time and many phone calls to keep us on the park. Of the 14 fixture games we managed two one-day game victories, emphatically defeating CBC on both occasions. Fifth grades prime purpose is youth development, it was my pleasure to guide so many first year players with the potential to succeed at higher levels within the club. Our on field performances did not fulfil our expectations but our commitment, disciplined attitude and fair play were the benchmark of the competition. To all players I offer my thanks for your efforts and support both on and off the field and look forward to sharing your company next season. Stuart McCarthy Captain

2002/2003 DUFFERS NOMINATIONS

1) Peter Agostino: For saying to the playing group at training that the Pre-

Season trip to Northam was not a piss drinking exercise. Ago was the first person in bed on the trip pissed.

2) Stan Koios: Locked himself in the Davilak toilets on a training night. He

had to wait for someone to enter the changerooms to let him out. 3) Joe Covic: Wanted to wear his helmet when going out to be a runner for

Glenn Leckenby. The problem was Lecker’s was not wearing a helmet. 4) John Stojan: For losing the toss against Canning Districts, unfortunately

his Cockburn side was not playing Canning Districts therefore he tossed the coin before the match with the wrong opposition team.

5) Mark Oreb: He was told a girl was Brazilian. Mark replied, “I didn’t

realise she had an accent?” 6) Nick Ratta: Was mentally challenged when trying to figure out how to do

number two on the scoreboard. The challenge was to great but he then made the mistake of asking the boys for help.

7) Pippo Raffaele: After the game against East Fremantle Pippo’s body

odour was becoming a concern, when told of this he sprayed deodorant on the outside of his playing shirt then changed into a fresh shirt.

ARE YOU AN HONORARY DING? I AM

DAVE SCOTT “Scotty” REPORTS It was with great pomp and ceremony that about 15 years ago two well respected Italian gentlemen Mr Fedele Camarda and Mr Pippo Raffaele granted me the life long award of honorary Italian.

A lot of strange things have occurred during that period which I would like to have a look back at some of the more memorable defining moments as an honorary ding. UNCONTROLLABLE Now when Fedele and Pippo told us they had a few mates who were going to come and play cricket, little did we expect to find thirty of the little buggers arrive at training and I mean little. Training was delayed for one hour on the first night as we thought the juniors were going over time. Fedele also failed to mention he had strange brothers and these brothers had some close mates who were even stranger. At least he also had a sister Fran who was nice and normal and could even control Joey and Steve by threatening to tell Dad. I think the hardest tasks at the club occurred on Saturday nights after about 10pm when the ethnic clan descended on Fremantle. Every week a guardian was appointed to keep Joe, Steve, Pauly, Fitzy and a large bloke called Lou out of trouble. I think I got to meet every bouncer in Freo, most of the police, body parts of Phoenix cricketers as well as a few teeth from a local publican. After the boys first A Grade final win it was quite amusing to advise the bouncers at Christie’s we had decided to keep the place open for a while - AND WE DID!! 50 blokes on each other’s shoulders singing we are the champions were gonna be hard to remove especially when Joey and Steve on peoples shoulders were swinging punches from a normal adult height while Pauly was flexing his biceps in the corner. DUMMY SPIT One of the best bowlers to play with me for years was one Rick Nardi. Unfortunately after twelve of the worst opening balls delivered in the history of cricket I made the decision to give Nards a quick spell. In his usual mild ethnic manner, Nards spat the chewy and duly told me his considered thoughts of my captaincy ability, after waving goodbye he headed for the pavilion. Now mid off to fine leg is a fair run for me, but fortunately I was able to manage it without the usual rest and had to whisper very quietly to Nards, that if he actually left the field it would be the last time he ever donned the beloved Cockburn colours. Being the intelligent type, especially after dismissing thoughts from his mind of assaulting me, Nards assumed the

COCKBURN CRICKET CLUB Inc. PAGE 2002 - 2003 YEAR BOOK

35

role of spoilt brat at fine leg. I think he was somewhat dismayed that at the end of the over he had a fair jog to fine leg at the other end. Never said a word though. I think I brought him back on 4 overs later and he took a very fine 5 for 26, just to stick it up me. The real danger to Nards was that a very nice young lady told him after the game that if he had left the field and embarrassed her she would have disowned him. GROSS Fedele and Pippo may have set the example for manners and etiquette at the club but there were very rare occasions the evil fluid led them astray. Who could forget a mild mannered young man introducing his girlfriend to Pippo at Christie’s only to find upon his return to the table that Pippo had spat on her leg? A claim he has strenuously denied for 15 years. As for Fedele, at least Joey and Steve never, ever, ever, ever pissed on the floor in the kitchen at Christie’s (even before they were thrown out)!!. BUNDY BOY Nobody has the cricket ability of one Paul Mirco but there are several million who can keep Bundy in their stomachs longer than Mosin. It should be noted that for the record, Mosin issued the Bundy drinking challenge and the resulting carnage occurred. Four spews, one of which was on himself in my car; a lapse into a coma, which required the use of a fireman’s lift to get him out of the car; and then to cap off a good night at 4am in the morning, whilst talking left handed, I had to explain to his what a naughty boy he had been. Unfortunately, Mosin has never re-issued the challenge and by all reports Bundy does not take pride of place in his bar. TWINS A SURPRISE What to do with twenty wogs to keep them out of jail on a Friday night prior to a finals series was a difficult decision to make. Fortunately a fat bloke called Obby volunteered his house for a quiet night of movies and beers. Well we got the few beers and the quiet activity centred on the junior Camarda’s and pygmy Pauly-playing rockin’ wrestling with big Dave Kay. Not much furniture or bodies remained in the state they arrived in. Dave Kay wrestling with Pauly and Joe after losing his shorts was not the most entertaining sight I have seen, although fairly memorable. At one stage I thought our potential match winner in Louie Medin was getting a bit carried away and in order to protect him from potential damage I elected to use the pommy motion fixing technique. A quick back flick to the genital region ensured he sat down for most of the night practising his grand final tears of joy. I still believe the little tap probably split the seed and caused the resulting twins. I would gladly offer to repeat the treatment for a suitable fee. PLAYER’S TRIPS Traditionally our club has settled for a very quiet and sedate end of season trip to unwind and relax. Several world records have been set on these trips especially since the ethnic invasion occurred. I think Pippo’s effort of spewing on the bus before we had left the suburb of Cockburn is unlikely to be surpassed even though knackers Kennedy couldn’t make Greenmount Hill on the way to Kal. Of other note was that Pauly could actually fit his entire penis in the top of a coke bottle without it being cut prior to most of his body growing at an unnatural rate. Rhino having to hose out the bus in Busselton with a fire hydrant due to the amount of urine splashed around predominantly by the respected coach and mentor of some at the time is worthy of a mention. Fortunately, no coach since that time has been caught by a Busselton hotel owner playing with himself in front of a crowd of seven.

Perhaps the most memorable of all records occurred to the non ethnic (and never will be an honorary Ding), 1 game, 1 duck never seen again Smith man whose hand (whilst allegedly asleep) was used by a certain knackers Kennedy to save spending the money in Hay Street Kalgoorlie.

Girls Seeking Guys

Are You Looking For A Guy A guy, who knows how to treat a woman right. A guy who will hold hands, give you cuddles and even talk to you. A guy, who will ignore his mates and pay you total attention, (even on Players Trips). A guy, who makes no attempt to get to third base. In fact he doesn’t even step up to or lick the mound. A guy, who likes the “REAL THING”. He even smiles and flicks his hair on cue. WANTED LEGS

Do you have any spare legs lying around or do you just have a little bit of leg to spare. If you do, then Claude Merendino wants to hear from you. Born with a rare defect where his feet are attached to his arse, Claude is in desperate need of some spare fibula and tibula bones. Using his upper limbs to get him around, he has adapted to everyday living but the constant ribbing and abuse from his friends, especially from his BEST MATE Steve Camarda. Along with the fact that he struggles to out run anyone but the one and only Luciano “Twinkle Toes” D’Arrigo, have left him with no choice but to appeal to the public.

Often grumpy and sometimes lacking in social skills (no, we are not talking about Frank Legena now), Claude does have a funny side. Like the time he joined Graham Edwards in a race around the cricket pitch (which Claude won in 1 hour 20 minutes). Then there was the time when Claude was mistaken for a dwarf and was consequently thrown around the bar for 25 minutes. So if you can find it in your heart to assist in this wonderful cause and bring joy to a legless man, please send all your donations to : Small Locked Box Stumpville WA 6160

Under D’Arrigo’s Nose

The Cavalier News has discovered terrorist cells using the Cockburn Cricket Club as a cover for a secret contact point. This report was sniffed out by Luch D’arrigo Private Nose Investigator.

The man in charge of thecells, Prosciutto bin Rattaadmitted to D’Arrigo theirintentions and who hissoldiers were. After a longinterrogation D’Arrigo finallynozzled it out of him.

D’Arrigo first approached Prosciutto bin Ratta under the guise as a long lost cousin to Prosciutto pointing out the nose resemblance. It wasn’t long before the beer and drugs flowed and the story unfolded.

Face of Terror

With a camera set up on a tripod hidden in D’Arrigo’s left nostril, these photos of Prosciutto bin Ratta’s loyal followers were taken:

“I should have smelt it sooner” said D’Arrigo, “the noses are a dead give away”.

“Unknown Cell”

D’Arrigo was out the back of Prosciutto bin Ratta’s home when it started to rain. “I reached for my umbrella up my right nostril, but remembered I lent it to a cousin to use as a marquee for a wedding. I didn’t want my toupee to get wet so I opened the door to his back shed and discovered a sleeping cell of Prosciutto bin Ratta’s network.”

This cell could have hibernated for four years and gone undetected. The genetically enhanced super soldier on the right is capable of hibernating seven years.
