MILESTONE IN SYDNEY RULES

NORTH SHORE GAIN LICENSE

1

Last Monday the North Shore Australian Rules Club received their license and Sydney Australian Rules now has 2 licensed Clubs. This is a milestone in the history of Australian Rules in Sydney.

The President of the N.S.W.A.N.F.L. Mr. Bill Hart expressed the Leagues pleasure at the news. "Sydney Australian Rules now has two licensed clubs one North and one South of the Harbour and there will be more to come."

The Press release from the North Shore Club tells it like this. The North Shore Club are pleased to announce the successful cul

mination of their 20 month period of negotiations to achieve their licensed club.

Shortli before midday on Monday, 13th August, 1973, Mr. Justice Street the Chief Judge in Equity gave final and absolute approval for their scheme to reconstruct a Club which was in liquidation.

It was through the foresight and effort of Fred Mackay, Bill Bairstow Phillip Loiterton and Jim Tuton who spearheaded the operajon which was not only supported by members of their own club who gave unstintingly of their time but also by members of other Clubs.

The whole project would not have been possible without the wonderful financial support of the Western Suburbs Australian Football Club Limited and the personal support of the President of the N.S.W.A.N.F.L. Mr. W. Hart and the Board of Management of the N.S.W. League.

The executive of the Australian Football Council has been right behind the project.

All sure in their purpose that this would be a certain means towards the further expansion of our game.

Congratulations North Shore Club.

S.D.A. GRAND FINAL At Erskineville Oval on Saturday the Grand Final of the S.D.A. Com

petition will be played between Sutherland and Western Suburbs. Mr. W. Hart president of the N.S.W.A.N.F.L., said today "This has

been a very successful competition and a credit to the League. To both teams I wish good luck, good weather and good football."

UNIVERSITY OF N.S.W. CLUB NOTES Wales' premiership hopes were daSh

ed last week when Pennant Hills were just a little too· good in the wet and took out the first semi final. The game was played in shocking ·conditions in Trumper Lake, and it was fortunate no players were drowned. Best for Wales were Albert Sindgeast, Paul Bakerich and Bob Howard.· And the Wales cheer

squad made a clean sweep of the singing, chanting and umpire baiting.

All interest centres on the Seconds this week when . they play Combined Services in the second semi. So regardless of this week's result, the Wales boys will be around for a while yet! Up the old Red Rooster.

20 THE FOOTBALL RECORD

THEIR LAST PENNANT

August 18, 1973

With the finals only 2 weeks away it is interesting to note when teams won their last pennant.

Only 6 of the 8 current First Grade Clubs have won a premiership pennant. The other 2 clubs Balmain and Southern Districts have both gone very close. Here is a summary of the Clubs last Pennant.

Current Premiers Western Suburbs have been the most successful side in the last decade. After a great season probably their greatest ever they had a big win over old rivals East Sydney.

In a power display the Magpies overwhelmed the Bulldogs at Trumper Oval last September to the tune of 22.23 (155) to 12.14 (86).

* * * East Sydney's greatest season for time was 19'71 when they defeated Western Suburbs in a great Grand Final. Easts had beaten Wests throughout the season but started as the underdog in the Grand Final.

In a heartstopper the Bulldogs prevailed by 17 points 19.15 (129) to 15.22 (112).

* * * It's been 12 years since North Shore won a flag, in fact 1961 was the year. In devastating form the Northerners beat Newtown in the 2nd Semi Final by 26 points, but then had to wait 3 weeks for the eventual challenger, namely Sydney to emerge, but Norths had too much in reserve and won 11.15 (81) to 4.1 (35).

* * * If ever a team deserved a flag, it was the 1964 St. George team. They won their last 16 club games and then the 2nd Semi Final. Came Grand Final Day and a jubilant Saints walked off the field Premiers by 10 goals beating Wests 14.18 (102) to 4.18 (42).

* * * Newtown last won the flag in 1970 beating North Shore by 5 goals 15.16 (106) to 10.16 (76). Norths had the previous week fought a narrow and exciting 2 point win over the great Western Suburbs in the replay of the preliminary final and unfortunately came out a jaded side in the important one.

Balmain or Cinderella's Tigers have never won a flag but went within an ace of one in 1916. Balmain wearing black and gold hoops were minor premiers with 14 wins and 1 defeat. That being by 2nd placed Paddington which wore list blue and white stripes and were the previous season's premiers.

Both clubs won their repective semi final and Paddington surprised Balmain in the final by forcing a play off in the finals system then used (the current system was not used until 1933) and in that play off the great Wally Messenger played a blinder to bring unstuck that great Balmain side by 3.14 (32) to 1.8 (14).

* * * Southern Districts have not won a Pennant. They are the baby of the League being formed in 1964. Their best season was in 1967 when, winning 13 games out of 18 they finished 3rd on the table but were beaten by Easts in the First Semi 10.12 (72) to 6.13 (49) In 1968 only a last minute tumble and defeat in the First Semi by Wests cost them a great chance for a flag. Wests won 17.16 (118) to 12.13 (85). This was .Southern Districts last ·finals appearance to date.

* * * A five point win in the Second Semi over Minor Premiers St Georgli> put South in the 1935 Grand Final. St. George won the preliminary final and came on to have their re-match with South. It is now history that South after establising an early lead thrashed St. George to the tune of 21.9 (135) to 11.17 (83). South have made several Grand Finals since although the last was in 1943 when St. George got their revenge, but so far a further flag has eluded this once great club.

Souths and Newtown contested a go.ad standard game allowing for the conditions. In it again until three quarter time, we could not go on with it. The Reserves continued on their losing run and we can only hope for better times next year. The Cabaret on Saturday night was a huge success. SOUTHERN DISTRICTS CLUB NOTES A fighting win over Balmain last Sun

day kept us near to the final five and it was thanks to Dick Bednarski, Ray Overson and the whole team. Others to star Steve BeUchambers, Trevor Harders and Alan Waugh in as I said a real team effort. A special welcome to Tony

Ferguson and P. Goodale who will be assets to the team. Our Reserves went down narrowly to Balmain but are still a big finals hope.

The 3rds never let B'almain get started and must bEL_ strongly favoured for a pennant.

* * * The Monster Raffle for the League Ball is offering tremendous prizes. Fir.st prize of course is the wonderful Lounge Suite donated by Ron Broughton Second prize is a Week End for Two in Sunny Brisbane by courtesy of T.A.A. "The Friendly Way." There will also be many other prizes. So get your tic-

kets now from your club Seco. Only 20 ·cents each.

* * * The League has circulated 10,000 Car Stickers FREE. Still haven't seen many on cars or trucks about town. How about getting behind our game and put one on your Bumper or Rear Window NOW!

* * * Congrats to South Sydney on their performance last week. If they can recruit a couple of ruckmen and a top forward they will certainly be a Premiership threat next year.

* * * Newtown and Sydney Football will soon lose one of the most successful coaches ever to come to N.S.W. Gordon Bowman has been transferred to Tasmania as State Manager for Humes Ltd. His new appointment will take effect at the end of November. N.S.W. loss will certainly be Tasmania's gain.

NORTH SHORE CLUB NOTES August, 1973 will not be remembered

for our football ability, but Monday the 13th should because it was then that Mr. Justice Street gave approval for our scheme to achieve "our licensed club at 92 Arthtir Street, North Sydney after 20 frustrating months of negotiations.

Fred Mackay, Bill Bairstow, Phillip Loiterton and Jim Lutons were all smiles with relief and shared many a glass of champers afterwards as congratulations rolled in. Many of those who have helped with the licensed club -the second for our Code in Sydneywere there for the celebrations and our

thanks go to· all who have shared in the effc,rt to date.

The future is no,w at our feet with much to be done to establish and develop the club-there is a lot to pay back before things are easier, so it is "all hands to· the pumps" to ensure that the work done so far is not wasted.

Our thanks to all the clubs who have helped with their patronage and for the encouragement received from the N.S.W. Board of Management and the Australian Football Council in Melboune.

BRUNO ONE ST. GEORGE CLVB NOTES

Last Sunday Saints supporters hopes for the finals series wel'e lifted when all three grades recorded impressive 8 goal victories. All Saints and Balmain players and supporters are welcome to attend a barbeque after the game at Bill Stein's residence at 51 Mercury Street, Beverley Hills.

SUTHERLAND CLUB NOTES Today is the day we all have worked

so hard for over the past two years. Whether it is a total success this is y.et to- be decided but with confidence gained from our previous win over Westsa win is our only object. We realise that Wests will not make it easy but our all round pace and ability we will come out on top. Sharks td Win .

As this is our last appearance for the

season we would like to extend our thanks to the other Clubs in the SDA for their sportsmanship and good football all through the season.

Don't forget players and supporters. our Cabaret, 25th August at CronullaSutherland Leagues Club. $2 per head meal included.

Also after today's win~a celebration at Graemes place.

WESTERN SUBURBS NOTES Another classy win for the Magpies

over the Bulldogs last week. Centre Peter Friedlieb, Ken Forbes, Barry Greaves, David Rowe and Ron De Kruiff were tops.. The Magpies never let up from the first bounce.

MAKO

Our Reserves were far too good for Easts--7 players combining to score the goals. Jeff Jarratt, Te·rry Thompson, '1an Ralph and Tim Atkins were great.

Fledgling Magpies had a good win over Bulldogs. Bob Clarke, Gary White and Skeeter Jones were best.

Donovan's "Ducks" had a swimming win last week against St. Ives in the S.D.A. Prelim Final. John Cousins and Warren Smith came to the surface enough to be noticed as good players. Good luck this week-the first of our 1973 pennants.

Congratulations to Andy Georgiou who was married last Saturday. Good luck Andy.

They tell me Rules Red will be available ( and Rules White also) in the Club this week end.
