On Saturday Eduardo Dolon and Cesar Sanchez visited Santiago de Compostela to assist in the presentation of La Vuelta, The Tour of Spain, cycling event, which will feature two decisive stages on the Costa Blanca. The riders will visit the province on Friday, September 9th in Javea to participate in an individual time trial, ending in Calpe. "The outcome of the 71st edition of the Tour of Spain will be decided in Alicante,” said the President of the Provincial Government, César Sánchez, during the presentation in Santiago de Compostela. This international sporting event, will feature the last two stages here before reaching Madrid and will run entirely through the Costa Blanca. In this regard, Sanchez stressed the importance of the race from a tourist point of view, by its very nature, being broadcast on television and attracting a worldwide audience. "The race stage is undoubtedly one of the best stages of La Vuelta due to the great interest and expectation it generates, broadcasting to over 190 countries around the world, showing off our landscape, tourism and rich heritage of Costa Blanca treasures,” said the president. A day later, on Saturday 10th September, cyclists will show their qualities and resistance as climbers on a day where the interior of the province will become the main protagonist. The stage starts in Benidorm, and will pass through the towns of La Nucia, Polop, Bolulla, Tàrbena, Parcent, Orba, Tormos, Sagra, Tollos, Benimassot, Balls, Goga, Millena, Benillup, Benimarfull, Muro de Alcoy, L'Alqueria d'Asnar, Cocentaina, Alcoy, Benilloba, Alcoleja, Relleu and Sella. In total 184 kilometres of myocardial exercise is including on the four mountain passes finishing with Sierra de Aitana that features a 1,510 meter ascent. The vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, who was also in the Palace of Congresses and Exposicions of Galicia in presenting this event, said: “the Costa Blanca Tourism Board is working on the design of a program of complementary activities that will be held to mark the passage of the Tour through Alicante, with the aim of involving all citizens in this festival of sport. In the coming months, the Board is scheduled to attend numerous sporting trade fairs, starting with Velofollies, to be held this week in the Belgian city of Kortrijk.” In addition, throughout this year, the independent body will actively participate in the development of events such as the Tour of Valencia and the 'Toy Tour'. The head of the Provincial Government also referred to the significant impact that this event generates to the economy of the Costa Blanca, as the cyclists and the entire technical team accompanying them, around 2,500 people, will spend two nights in hotels in the province. In addition, one must take into account issues such as spending on leisure and the great tourist impact a competition of this nature entails. "Tourism is the heart of the economy of our province and also the foundation of the welfare of our people. Therefore, we will continue working in this direction, because our priority is job creation and that, in addition to generating the other productive sectors, is our objective with growing tourism,” concluded Sanchez. One of those famous roundabouts caught out an elderly driver at the La Siesta Roundabout just before Christmas, who thankfully was not hurt, just one of the 'roundabout' accidents that took place over the festive season. Drivers are asked to remain vigilant when navigating roundabouts and to note that no matter how incredulous it might seem that traffic in the inside lance can cut up traffic in the outside lane if the inside lane wishes to turn left, they do have the right of way by Spain's traffic law, so please drive carefully. During 2016 Spain registered a new record low in the number of fatalities per accident since 1960. Last year there were 1,126 deaths from traffic accidents on urban roads: 6 fewer than in 2014. Spain continues to rank as the fifth country with the best road safety and is next to Denmark and the United Kingdom, the only other EU countries that closed 2015 with fewer deaths than in 2014. The decline of victims is repeated for the twelfth consecutive year. The death toll represents a record low since 1960, the first year in which statistics are available, when there were 1,300 people, with a scenario of mobility quite different. In 1960 there were one million vehicles and in 2015 the fleet exceeds 31 million. Next week the CoastRider will present a complete look at Spain;s driving statistics. Drive carefully. December 2015 was the warmest December onrecord. According to data collected by the MastralProject Weather Stations, December 2015 saw Torreviejarecording an average temperature of 15.3 degreesCelsius, the highest median value from when data wasfirst available back in 1927.

Even without official data, local residents and visitorscommented time and time again as to how warm anddry the month had been. December failed to bring thenormal cooler temperatures normally associated withthe start of winter with almost every day throughout themonth showing temperatures above normal. The outcome of the last National,Local and Regional elections in 2015have left the entire country in apolitical quagmire. Spain is now acountry, at all levels, that depends onpacts, alliances, coalitions andcooperation all leading tocompromise as many things grind to ahalt. Local voters should have knownbetter in Torrevieja. For four years theywatched on at the in-fighting andcomplete lack of movement andaction that was taking place inOrihuela, as the four party coalitionfailed to agree on almost everything. But it was not a lesson learnt andalmost 50% of the Torrevieja'spopulation that could vote, decidednot to. The result being that the city now has Spain'sonly five party coalition, a pentapartito government, which is run though giving other minor parties ingovernment concessions in order to hang onto power.

With Spain still undecided as to whether anotherNational election will be needed this spring to try andmove the country forward, local focus is now turnedtowards the pentapartito in Torrevieja and the cracksthat are beginning to show. To date, the pentapartitounder the maximum two year leadership of mayor JoseManuel Dolon (Greens) have offered Torrevieja little interms of moving the city forward in a positive fashion.Instead they have dwelled on the past and looked fordifferent things they could put the blame on the formerPartido Popular government for, rather than looking forways to move the city forward.

The Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre was closed:the Municipal Theatre remains closed: the new SportsPavilion and Semana Santa Museum have yet to open:the Friday market has not moved: the Padron desk atthe Department of Tourism was closed: the city stilldoes not have an Office of the Foreign Residents: pubs, restaurants, clubs and business have been closed: thesports gala and salt queen gala have been moved from2015 to 2016: dozens of shows and performances havebeen cancelled: work on the La Siesta park ground to ahalt: you can only see a councillor or the mayor if youmake a request at the PROP office so the open doorpolicy has never taken place: the Mayor and variouscouncillors told lies about shore excursions and thearrival of Torrevieja's first Cruise Ship and then tried toblame the PP saying that should the arrival not be asuccess, it was the fault of the PP and not their fault; andthe list goes on and on. Lest we forget, six months afterthe pentapartito taking power last June, 2015, foreignresidents are still without any direct point of contactwith the Town Hall as although promises were made,

the city is still without a Foreign Residents Office. The lack of cooperation in Torrevieja has been

noticed in the Spanish National Press, who have lookedbehind the 'spin' of Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon and cansee the cracks beginning to form. With only a couple ofweeks remaining before Spain forms a coalitiongovernment or goes back to the Voting booth,Torrevieja is being seen as a city that is gettingmaximum attention as to possible National politicalpacts. Torrevieja can be studied as a model for theresults of a multiple party alliance, in this case, nothingless than a pentapartito against the most voted forparty the PP and that José Manuel Dolon (Greens), asthe front as mayor, many see him as an example ofchaos and unstable management.

One of the episodes that support this view starred asthe local government team spent 81,000 euros of aidfor training the unemployed that was lost, due to lackof qualified staff to teach some courses. In addition, municipal officials blamed the failure to apply to anorder from the Valencian Government, also governedby a tripartite agreement. Another missed opportunityby the torrevejense pentapartito has been to worktowards opening a university in the city, which hadeven budgeted for by the previous government teamfrom the PP. Last week the Mayor Jose Manuel Dolontried to make a name for himself by saying that theMusic Conservatory was unfit for purpose. He said thatneither a piano nor drums could be hoisted to theupper floor of the building. However, there are 22classrooms on the ground floor and no need to hoistthese or other heavy instruments to the upper floors. He went on to mention that in the Music Conservatorythat the ceilings were not high enough for dancers tolift their partners and that there were no changingfacilities not showers for them. However, once again heseems to have missed the point that this was designed

as a superior conservatory of music and itwas never intended to be a dance studio. However, many other newspapers justprinted the Mayor's press release withoutevent thinking about what had been saidby the Mayor and possibly by journalistswho have never been inside theconservatory of music to see what is therefor themselves. The Partido Popular, nowin opposition regretted that thisUniversity project that is also linked to theInternational Auditorium of Torrevieja, may not go ahead nor other largeprojects related to sports, health, tourismand culture even though they left21,000,000€, yes, twenty one millioneuros, in the coffers for the pentapartitoto continue the positive growth of the

city. The funds given to the pentapartito alsoaddressed other areas such as social services and forother purposes.

Trade and commerce in the Town Centre has alsobeen seen as a fiasco and has left a bad taste in someareas of its current local government, such as the lastedition of the event, Halloween' Survival Zombie. Forthis event, the pentapartito promised an influx of morethan 2,000 people to the hamlet of La Mata, when inreality there were just fifty. The PP opposition alsoreported that this cost 18,000€ from public funds whenin other municipalities the event was staged for free orat a much reduced cost such as in El Campello. Not onlydid the organisers benefit from the 18,000€ paid by thepentapartito but each participant then also paid totake part in the event.

There are other events such as Black Friday,Halloween, the Sports Gala and the Grand SummerParade that can be counted as failed events or that thepentapartito just stopped. The latest controversy, fromjust last week arises from two contracts for twoemployment workshops employment with pricedifferences of up to 300% in some materials, with thecouncil trying the backtrack and cover their tracks inthinly veiled excuses. The Councillor for fiestas alsogave the contract for printing the May Fair to acompany in Toledo, without offering this to tender orto any local business, which is once against their ownrules of competition.

Six months have passed since the pentapartitocame into power. It remains to be seen who will be thenext Spanish Prime Minister as the national partiescontinue to talk, citing Torrevieja as an example of howlarge party coalitions just do not seem to work, as toomany people, parties and individuals have their ownagendas and ideas of what they want out of the powersharing agreement.

The annual awards werepresented Most Valued Member, TheHand of Friendship, and the TrabantTrophy to various Members. Sunday 15thNovember Neville organised a trip toJumilla to a bodega, the run over the hillswas spectacular, with views beyondcompare to anywhere in the world, the

guided tour of the Bodega was excellentand has been owned by the same familyfor generations. We travelled on to Pinosofor lunch on the way home. Just over 200kms. round trip - an excellent day.

Our annual Christmas bash- was heldas usual at Restaurant Rebate, 48members and guests attended, we wereentertained by Raquel Penas ProfessionalDancers, and during and after lunch wewere enthralled by the voice of Nick Gold. All in all a fantastic day - no doubt we willbe returning in 2016.

"While many of youwill share in this loss, we ask that yourespect the family's privacy during theirtime of grief," The singer's son, filmmakerDuncan Jones, issued a confirmingstatement of his own on Twitter. Tributespoured in on social media from, amongothers, British Prime Minister DavidCameron and comedian Ricky Gervais, who hosted Sunday night's GoldenGlobe Awards show in Los Angeles.

Hisperformance of "Heroes" was a highlightof a concert for rescue workers after the2001 World Trade Center attacks. By Andrew AtkinsonWe all fear the dreaded Mosquito -

'Mozzie' - bites but do not expect them tostart the New Year as early as January. "Ihave been bitten by a mosquito for thefirst time ever in January," said Algorfaresident Sandra Piddock, in the wake ofan early New Year show by mosquitoes.Spring and summer months are deemedto be the time of year when the mosquitois at its height - not January.

Along with the native Spanishmosquito the Tiger Mosquito populationhas grown on the South coast of Spain inrecent years - having first been reportedin Catalunya in 2004. Despite attempts toreduce the mosquitoes - followingincreasing pesticide spraying - theyremain high in numbers.

Mosquitoes are able to carry twentydiseases - including the Chikungunyavirus - carried by the black and whitestriped Tiger Mosquito that is on theincrease in southern Spain. TheChikungunya virus was first reported inthe Alicante region of Gandia. Infectioncauses joint pain, muscle pain, fever, nausea, headaches and fatigue.

Torrevieja Salt Lakes have been amajor breeding ground for mosquitoes, along with the breeding of mosquitoestaking place in water - mainly stagnant -

including in gardens. There have beenvarious deterrent methods, from sprays,to that of planting lemon trees, lavender, with aloe vera named as a skin applicant, following bites. With the native Spanishmosquito and the Tiger Mosquito - nativein Southern Asia - Deet (50%), garlic, evenBovril, has been suggested, as apreventative measure against bites.Citronella, Rosemary, peppermint, castor, lemon Eucalyptus, lemongrass andcinnamon oils are others.

In the City of Torrevieja andsurrounding towns the mosquito returnsevery year - with areas includingQuesada, Los Montesinos, San Luis, LosBalcones, and Guardamar, among manyothers, being near to Lagunas de La Matay Torrevieja salt lakes. Preventativemeasures have increased - withadditional spraying - in a bid to eliminateor reduce mosquitoes being undertakenin 2015.

Cuidad Quesada resident MaureenGaw said: "I have never had mosquitobites at this time of year before - I amgetting really fed up of them. As apreventative measure Deet is the best. Iuse it all through the summer - but it nowlooks like I will have to us Deet all the yearround."

San Isidro based Kay Smith said: "Myhusband tried everythingunder the sun - he was a'magnet' for mozzies. However, since a Spanish friend told himto try 'Aqua de Colonia' byNenuco - we have used it for 18months - he has not had onebite. So it is well worth peopletrying it." June-Anne Whitlockfrom Guardamar said: "We useAqua de Colonia too. It isamazing, along with Lavenderand Avon's 'Skin so Soft'. Theyall work well."

The parents of a seven-year-oldchild who was found dead insidetheir home in Girona have beenreleased by a judge, but barredfrom leaving the country. Thecouple, who are US citizens, hadtheir passports withheld.

While initial reports suggestedthat the child had been dead forfour weeks, forensic scientists nowbelieve that the death may haveoccurred over three months ago, given the advanced state of decayof the body.

Both the father and mothertold the judge that they thoughttheir son was asleep, said the attorney inthe case, Enrique Barata. They claimedthat one morning they went into hisroom but he would not wake up.

Although the results of a toxicologytest are still pending, violence has alreadybeen ruled out and doctors suspect thatthe child may have died of a respiratorycondition, as he suffered from asthma likehis mother.

Investigators are searching the father’scomputer in search of any evidence thatthe parents were aware that their child’slife was at risk yet did nothing to save

him.Failing to report the child’s death

would not constitute a crime if theparents had nothing to do with it,criminal experts said. For now, thecharges of involuntary manslaughterhave not been dropped.

The parents, a US couple who havebeen living in the Catalan city with theirthree children for around two years, werearrested on January 5 after the policewalked into their duplex and found thebody wrapped in blankets on a bed.

The family had been spending time

inside the same roomwith the body and rarelywent out at all, leadingpsychiatrists to believethat they may have beenunder a collectivedelusional state. Familymembers reportedlyreferred to the child asbeing merely “asleep.”

It has now emergedthat the Catalan policehad been to the housefive days prior to thegrisly discovery, after theUS consulate was

contacted by somebody concerned thatno one had heard from the family in along time. The father spoke with theofficers and told them that everythingwas fine.

Then, on January 5, the apartmentowner showed up to demand that thefamily pay the rent they had owed since

September. After getting no answer buthearing loud screaming inside the home, she called the police, who entered thepremises and found the body.

On Thursday morning, a delegationfrom the US consulate showed up at theGirona courthouse in charge of theinvestigation to inquire about the case. The couple, a 39-year-old engineer andhis wife, 38, have failed to provide detailsof how their child died or why they didnot report it.

Some experts believe that the fact thatthe family kept the body and carried onwith their lives around it points to themsuffering a psychological alteration ofreality. One of the strongest workinghypotheses is that the youngster mayhave fallen ill, and that the parents failedto get him the medical attention herequired for unknown reasons.

The couple has two older children whohave been temporarily placed under thecare of the Catalan government.

Spanish police say they have seizedthree tonnes of cocaine and arrested 12suspected drug smugglers from Spain,Britain and the Netherlands in a majordrugs bust in the north of the country.

The seizure in the north-west Galiciaregion was “the biggest for this type ofdrug on Galician soil since 1999”, thepolice said in a statement, withoutrevealing when the operation tookplace.

The cocaine was bound for animportant smuggling ring based in theCosta del Sol in southern Spain, thestatement added.

“Twelve people were detainedincluding those transporting themerchandise, who were Spanish, and thesellers and buyers of the drugs, whowere Dutch and British respectively.”

Spain’s proximity to north Africa, a keysource of hashish, and its close ties withformer colonies in Latin America – theworld’s main cocaine-producing region– have made it a major gateway intoEurope for drug consignments.

Last month, police said they hadseized 40 pallets made out of 1.4 tonnesof compressed cocaine made to look likewood that arrived on a shippingcontainer from Colombia.

In November, police announced theyhad arrested Michael Roden, a suspecteddrug trafficking boss who is listedamong Britain’s 10 most wantedfugitives.

Roden, also known by his nickname“Dodge”, was wanted by British police inconnection with the importation of 70kgof cannabis into Britain from Spain in2013.

Also in November, police detainedfellow Briton Robert Dawes, one ofEurope’s most wanted drug lords, whowas arrested at his luxury villa on theCosta del Sol after an eight-year probeinto his alleged links to the Italian mafiaand South American cartels.

He has since been extradited toFrance, where he is wanted inconnection with the discovery of 1.3tonnes of cocaine in a Paris airport in2013.

Spain’s southern Costa del Sol hasbeen known as a hideaway for Britishcriminals in the past, especially in thelate 1970s and 80s when there were noextradition agreements with Britain.

But the situation changed in 2004with the introduction of European arrestwarrants, making it easier to bring Britishcriminals home to face justice.

West Atlantic’s CEO, GustafThureborn, told a press conference inGothenburg "with great sorrow" thatthe accident had taken place onThursday night.

A Spanish pilot, aged 42, and a Frenchfirst officer, 34, were both on board theflight.

A Norwegian F16 plane located thewreckage on the ground between thenorth-western edge of Swedish lakeAkkajaure and the Norwegian border, inan area often known as the Swedishalps.

Thureborn told reporters he hadbeen woken up by a phone call twominutes after the airline was alertedabout the crash and was at the office 15minutes later.

Police and mountain rescue teamswere dispatched to the scene amid sub-freezing temperarures.

"The terrain is mountainous and it's -30C, so it's going to take a while beforewe get there," police spokesman MariaJakobsson told the TT newswire shortlybefore 8am.

"They sent a very brief 'mayday' andthen the plane disappeared from ourradar. (…) The weather conditionsweren't harsh," Daniel Lindblad, SwedishMaritime Administration press officer, also told TT.

"The crash site is very clear. Its totaldiameter is about 50 metres and thereare no large parts but only smallfragments left of the aircraft," he added.

Police and mountain rescue teamsarrived at the site at around 1pm onFriday, after being delayed bytreacherous conditions.

The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-200, isregistered in Sweden, but travelsbetween Norwegian destinations. It wasmanufactured in 1993.

Thureborn told reporters that all ofthe company's planes of the samemodel had been grounded as aprecaution.

"In light of the ongoing investigationwe can't give you more informationabout what has happened, but we'llhave to await its results. We're happy tooffer more information as soon as wehave it," he added

The sister of Spanish King Felipe VI, 50-year-old Cristina, will be the first directmember of the royal family facing acriminal trial since the Spanish monarchywas restored in 1975 after the death ofDictator General Francisco Franco.

The case is focused on the shady

Felipe VI stripped Cristina and herhusband of their titles as the duke andthe duchess of Palma de Mallorcafollowing their indictment last year.

The royal couple had been granted thetitle by Juan Carlos after their high profilemarriage in 1997 at the peak of thepopularity of Spain’s royal family.

Producers in Murcia are warning thatthe unseasonably high temperaturesexperienced in recent weeks arebringing forward harvesting andthreaten to derail the 2015/16 wintervegetable campaign.

Harvesting of lettuce and broccoli –two of the region’s biggest products –has already got under way in areasaround Campo de Cartagena andGuadalentín – several weeks earlier thanin a normal year.

The mild winter is also keepingdemand in check across many centralEuropean countries who usually rely onSpanish supplies at this time of year buthave been able to meet demand withdomestic production so far this season.

Demand is believed to be down by 20-30 per cent, producers say.

“The best thing that could happen

right now is for a cold wave to sweepacross central Europe,” Jesús Abenza ofAlimer told La Opinión de Murcia.

Strawberry production in Huelva hasalso been brought forward by aroundone month, leading to a supply glut thathas caused prices to fall sharply.

Cristóbal Picón of the Costa de Huelvacooperative said that whereas growerswere being paid €3-4 per kg in earlyDecember this had dropped by 50 percent at the end of the month, in spite ofthe Christmas holidays.

“The season should just be gettingunder way but in actual fact productionis currently at levels not normally seenuntil the end of January,” he toldAgrodiariohuelva.es.

Picón warned that with later varietiesalso running ahead of schedule, thewhole season could be a washout.

Another video documentary; "50 Yearsof the Yacht Club" gave way thepresentation by local craftsman Luis RuizRuiz, who has dedicated his life torebuilding vessels. The result of his work isthat there have been many ships andyachts that have undergone majorrestoration and been transferred to theclub. Theformer act meant that the RCNT wasliving on borrowed time, as the 30 yearlease for the concession for the landwhere the yacht club is built, was shortlyto end, leading to an air of uncertaintyamong members over the past couple ofyears, as to what would be the future of

the club. To close the gala, opera singer Helena

By Andrew AtkinsonLos Montesinos celebrated the Spanish

Christmas tradition of 'The Three Kings' on January5, 2016 with a 'Magical Evening' in the small VegaBaja town. "The Festival Committee, Team,Municipal School of Theatre and its director JavierPerez Ballesta Gym, Rosi, Musical GroupMontesinos and volunteers all contributed to amagical evening and helped generateexcitement," a spokesperson from the Committeetold The Coast Rider.

Children in the Vega Baja town of LosMontesinos, Alicante, were thrilled when Los TresReyes Magos - the Three Wise Men - deliveredpresents at the Festival. The new King of Kings -Baby Jesus - is traditionally offered three presentsof Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, to the new-bornchild in Belén (Bethelem). Children had been busywriting letters to the Three Kings - Kings: Melchor,Gaspar and Baltasar - as to what they requested aspresents on the morning of January 6.

Traditionally their Majesties travel by camelfrom the East, arriving in Spain, to visit villages andcities listening to children’s requests.

As in other town's children of Los Montesinosput out something to eat and drink for Melchor,Gaspar and Baltasar - with grass and water for thecamels. The Epiphany is a tradition in Spain - whenchildren receive presents brought by the ThreeKings - not Santa Claus. Hundreds lined the streetsin Los Montesinos to celebrate the Three Kings, with the event broadcast live throughout Spain onnational television. In Madrid over 100,000

celebrated - including thousands of children -catching sweets thrown into the crowd by theThree Kings, as did children in Los Montesinos. InBarcelona the Three Kings arrived by boat at thecity’s port - where they were greeted by the Mayor.

The Mayor of Los Montesinos Jose ManuelButron was in attendance as the 2016 Three Kingsprocession got underway. The oldest Three Kingsparade in Spain took place in Alcoy, Alicante in1885. The roles of the Three Kings havetraditionally been played by Councillors. In LosMontesinos the Festival Committee, Team,Municipal School of Theatre director Javier PerezBallesta Gym, Rosi, Musical Group Montesinos andvolunteers all contributed. Former CD Montesinosfootball star, Brazilian born Vazquinho, was part ofthe 2016 Three Kings Festival.

Vazquinho, a former Player of the Year at theMunicipal Stadium based Los Montesinos club, now plays for Sporting Saladar. Los MontesinosJose Manuel Butron told The CoastRider: "TheThree Kings Parade in Los Montesinos wasexcellent. Thank you to everyone who helped -and a Happy 2016."

APAH ANIMAL Rescue Charity would like to thank all theirvolunteers for their hard work and commitment throughout 2015.They would also like to thank all the people who have supportedthem both at fund-raising charity events, not only spending in theircharity shops but also with the huge amount of donations ofclothing, household items and bric-a-brac, which are given into theirshops weekly, which in turn allows them to continue their work andto those who adopted their rescued cats and dogs and given them anew 'forever' home

Without everyone who volunteers their time to 'work' for APAH,along with everyone who supports them, the charity says they couldnot rescue, re-habilitate and re-home the amount of dogs and catsthat they provide care for. The search for new volunteers never endsand APAH is always looking for help in their shops, their kennels andcattery. If you have some time to spare, love animals, and want tomake a difference, please contact them by calling 630 422 563 orfind them on www.facebook.com/apahrescuesanpedro. Happy NewYears and thanks for your support.

This week Artists Direct had a chat backstage withAllan Heiding. Allan recently moved to the Costa Blancabut is no stranger to Spain having gigged all over thiscountry and over 150 cities worldwide with his 70’s bandFlair. As a member of Flair, Allan is extremely proud thatthe band’s record was produced by Hank Marvin.

These days Allan loves to perform solo with acousticguitar and occasionally with his daughter as a duo.

Who are you and what do you do?I am Allan Heiding, Singer, Musician and Entertainer –

these days mostly solo but I really enjoy accompanyingmy daughter as well when we get the chance as a duo. Ihave a repertoire of over 1500 numbers in all genres andcategories of music including Pop, Country, and Folk. Itjust depends on what the audiences wants.

I love entertaining as well as playing and like to createa cosy smiling atmosphere everywhere I play. How did you start in the business?

I saw an advert for a group – the St. Tropez Singers -who were looking for someone with my skills. They hada lot of gigs booked in the northern part of Spain, so Iapplied – that was 1972, a lot has happened since then.

What would you be doing if you were not anentertainer?

I would probably teach – I have been a choirmasterand music teacher whilst a professional musician so Iwould enjoy teaching music, singing and performing.

As an entertainer who has been your biggestinfluence?

I can't tell since there has been too many!Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered

stage fright?Of course the first time, but never the last! I

LOOOOOVE challenges!

What was your best moment?I would think it was probably when we performed at

Parc de Montjuic i Barcelona for 15000 people, receivingthe prize of Best Foreign Entertainment 1974,accompanied by a big band.

What has been your worst moment?I have only really had successes, more or less of

course, but not a seriously ‘worst moment’!What’s the best piece of advice you have received

or would give someone starting out in the business?I have had so much good advice over the years it’s

hard for me to pick one single piece.Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? It was such a great day when my group FLAIR and our

producer, Hank B. Marvin, got to The EMI – Studios atAbbey Road and saw our studio, in which PaulMcCartney & Wings had left their equipment all set up asthey had not had chance to move it out. The band hadbasically ‘lived’ in the studio for the previous twomonths. Such an amazing moment.

Allan arrives in Costa Blanca in January 2016, if youwould like to book Allan or find out more – listen to histracks and get his telephone number, these can befound on the artistsdirect-spain.com website

Back Stage with Allan Heiding

Tell us about yourselvesMy name is Gummi and I have run the

‘Black Bull’ restaurant, together with mytwin brother Christian, for just over a yearnow. We are located between San Miguelda las Salinas and the village ofTorremendo. We are originally fromIceland and have been in Spain for 10years, since we were teenagers. We wentto school and college over here.

What made you open abar/restaurant?

Neither of us had done much of thissort of thing before as a job but onseveral occasions we had organized a“food fest” for the Icelandic communityon the Costa Blanca. This was always fish-based with matured skate and fishytapas. These occasions always wentextremely well and inspired us to open arestaurant ourselves.

Where did the inspiration for thename come from?

In the years before we took over theplace had been several different types ofestablishment with various names, including the ‘Black Bull.’ This was the

name that seemed the most familiar toour locals and we liked it so that is what itbecame.

Who does the cooking? And howwould you describe your style?

Christian is the head chef, ably assistedby Vicente who is Spanish. This means wecan offer an interesting mix of Icelandicand Spanish cuisine. Vicente’s forte is‘Speciality Spanish Tapas’ while Christianparticularly likes cooking steaks and

Hunter’s Chicken, which contains baconwith Edam and maturecheddar cheeses. Alsowe all like traditionalEnglish food such asfish and chips.

What’s yourfavourite dish on themenu?

I’ve asked around

on this one. My personal favourite isspare ribs while Christian’s is fillet steak.Vicente went for pan-fried breaded fishwith chips and fried onions. Our waitressStefanie also chipped in with her choicebeing chicken with cheese…Icelandicstyle. I guess this gives an indication ofthe variety of our menu.

Favourite day of the week?I love Sundays when, in common with

many other places these days, we do acarvery. Christian particularly looksforward to Saturdays as this is the day heprepares his steak specials. Finally, andmaybe we shouldn’t say this but, we alllove Tuesdays because it is our day off.Having said that we always look forwardto re-opening on Wednesday morning aswe love what we do here.

Any interesting tales?I can give you a couple of snippets

about ourselves. Christian literally went

from working as a bricklayer to becominga chef overnight. I have to say that he’staken to it like a duck to water. As formyself my only real previous experienceworking in this environment was a shortstint in a coffee bar in Reykjavik, Iceland. Ithappened to be, however, Iceland’s mostfamous coffee bar, the “Svarta Kaffi”. (Thename means ‘black coffee’). Oh and wepride ourselves in keeping our Frenchwindows clean, so much so that in ourearly days a couple of people walked intothem thinking they were open.Thankfully nobody was hurt. We stoppedshort of putting up signs saying “This is awindow” but we now put up posters orsomething similar to make it obviousthere’s a window there.

The Black Bull Steak Bar & Restaurant isat Torremendo off the CV 951 near SanMiguel and you can contact them tobook at table on 966 194 194/ 685 770059. Find out what they have going on,see their menus on their page on thewhatson-costablanca.com website.

How much of this year have youwished for what you haven’tcurrently got?Research has described howthose of us are dissatisfied withlife in general and certainspecific things are much morelikely to have higher rates ofdepression and even die soonerthan our happier more fulfilledcounterparts. What happens in our head

affects our bodily functions andas the body is really a verycomplex machine it is easy tounderstand how if one partmalfunctions it can affect therest of the efficient working ofthe machine, in this case thehuman body. Many people are dissatisfiedand in some cases very unhappywith their life as it is today butdon’t actually know where to

begin to address this. They knowthat they are unhappy but itstops at that. Why not make thiscoming year a year for change ifthat is what you really want.Empower yourself to start tothink about making change Agood starting point is to writedown why you feel unhappy ordissatisfied, what is it that youwould like to change. You don’thave to show this to anyone sobe totally honest withyourself…When you have done this scorefrom one to ten, ten being theworst against each thing on thelist. You can’t tackle everythingat once but this way you willidentify what is your biggestissue and then write down whatneeds to happen to bring thesechanges. It may not be earth moving itcan be quite small things butinstead of ruminating aboutthem do something to changethem. Little steps are sometimesall that is required on the otherhand this exercise might identifyhuge changes that need tohappen.Change is scary and manypeople would rather stay in an

unhappy situation than makechanges. This is about choiceand looking things in the eyeand deciding if you want to doanything. If it is a situation or person whomakes you unhappy you mightdecide to share it with them andsee where it takes you.Sometimes writing it down is allyou need to do because justwriting it down can bring relief

and be sufficient to dispel theissue.Next week we are going to beginto think about a very commonNew Year’s Resolution which isto lose weight as there is lots ofhelp out there to start you onyour journey. If you have any issues you wouldlike to email us [email protected] is ouraddress.

Next Year…..

Believe it or not, an effective healthyeating plan can help you lose moreweight than even exercise. And the bestpart is that eating healthy is not all thatdifficult. You just have to follow a fewsimple rules to enjoy the varied benefitsof health eating.1.) Eat before you feel starvedto avoid overeating.

As with fluids, if you only drink whenyou are thirsty then it is already too late.A handy tip is to drink a glass of waterbefore you eat so that you don’t feel ashungry.2.) Take small bites and chewyour food properly beforetaking the next bite.

A great tip is to put your eatingutensils down between each mouthful so that you don’trush yourself. This will help you eat slower, allowing yourstomach to fill up without overeating.3.) Eat with your stomach and not with youreyes.

Let your body tell you when you are full, not yourbrain, as it will always want more than is required.4.) Chew your calories, don’t drink them.

Beverages can add a lot of extra calories to your diet, especially soda or carbonated drinks. Even fruit juice isnot always the best option, so rather drink more water.5.) Eat your breakfast as early as you can inthe morning.

This will give an early kick start to your body'smetabolism. But no matter what you do, do not skip

breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of theday and a healthy breakfast ensures a healthy lifestyle.Skipping your breakfast ruins your body's metabolismwhich can actually result in your body gaining moreweight.6.) Be sure to eat a variety of fruits andvegetables with each meal to ensure youare getting all the vitamins and mineralsyou need.

Greens are packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, C, E and K, and they helpstrengthen the blood and respiratory systems. Beadventurous with your greens and branch out beyondbright and dark green lettuce — kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options.

Naturally sweet vegetables addhealthy sweetness to your meals andreduce your cravings for other sweets. Some examples of sweet vegetables arecorn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes oryams, winter squash, and onions.

A wide variety of fruit is also vital to ahealthy diet. Fruit provides fibre, vitaminsand antioxidants. Berries are cancer-fighting, apples provide fibre, orangesand mangos offer vitamin C, and so on.7.) Eat more fish.

Aim for at least two portions of fish aweek, including a portion of oily fish. Youcan choose from fresh, frozen or canned, but remember that canned and smokedfish can be high in salt.8.) Remember that chicken isn'talways a healthy choice.

Many fast-food chains offer fried breaded chickensandwiches on white bread that are actually richer in fatand calories than a burger. Grilled chicken is a betteroption.9.) Cut down on saturated fat.

Try to cut down on food that is high in saturated fatand have foods that are rich in unsaturated fat instead, such as vegetable oils (including sunflower, rapeseedand olive oil), oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds.10.) Minimize intake of the three unhealthywhites: sugar, salt and white flour.

All these three white products are bad for your health.Make it a point to reduce their intake as much aspossible.

Low blood sugar is a seriouscondition. Find out exactly what it is anddiscover the symptoms and possiblecauses.

Low blood sugar, often referred to ashypoglycemia, can affect anyone at anyage. However it is more common amongbabies and the elderly.

Low bloodsugar basicallymeans that youhave a lowamount of sugar(glucose) inyour blood, usually below60 mg/dL. At alevel of 50mg/dL isthought toaffect thefunctioning ofthe humanbrain. This is due to the fact that glucoseis the primary source of fuel for the brain. It is also required to fuel the muscles, cells and ensure the correct functioningof hormones, such as insulin, glucagonand epinephrine.

Insulin, as well as glucagon are bothmanufactured in the pancreas. Insulin isresponsible for the absorption ofglucose into the blood stream, whileglucagon breaks down the stored

glucose (glycogen) and releases it intothe blood stream. Epinephrine, alsoknown as adrenalin, is manufactured inthe adrenal gland and its role is toelevate blood sugar levels, by makingthe glucose available for the body duringstressful periods.

When these systems do not workproperly, hypoglycemiamay occur.Commoncauses ofhypoglycemiainclude the useof alcohol, missing meals, infections, kidney or liverfailure, tumours suchas hepatoma, fibrosarcoma

and mesothelioma, medication such asbeta-blockers or over-medicating withinsulin, among others.

Symptoms include hunger pangs, anxiety, sweating, rapid heartpalpitations, and shaking, seizures, headaches, confusion and difficultythinking.

If you suspect that you havehypoglycemia seek immediate medicalattention before the condition worsens.

This recipe is typical of home-cooking in the Marina Altacomarca in Alicante province--although you find slightlydifferent versions all over Levante. It comes from the Reus Torresfamily who run the Corral del Patorestaurant in an old farmhouse inGata de Gorgos (Alicante). It's alsosometimes called arroz passejat, meaning rice that has gone for awalk--because it was taken to thebaker's oven for cooking. Untilrecently, this was always madewith the Bomba rice grownbehind Denia, which gave the grains afirmness and much greater texture.

Ingredients:1 lb 2 oz Bomba rice1/2 cup olive oil 1 lb 6 oz mixed chicken and rabbit jointsand lean pork, on the bone and cut intosmall chunks1 red pepper3 ripe tomatoes, 1 grated and 2 halvedcrossways7 oz garbanzo beans, soaked for 12 hoursin cold water1 head of garlicSaltPimentónSaffronAbout 1 litret water

Preparation:Heat the oil and fry the pieces of meat

until they are golden. Add the red pepper,

cut into three or four pieces, and thegrated tomato. This may be done ahead oftime.

Heat the oven to high. Bring the waterto boil. In a 2 1/2 litre capacity casserole, make a bottom layer of the Bomba ricemixed with saffron; next put in the meatfried with the tomato; then the garbanzobeans arranged between the pieces ofmeat. Pour over the boiling water (usingslightly less if the dish is not made ofearthenware).

On the top, put the whole head ofgarlic in the middle and, around it, the redpeppers and the remaining twotomatoes, halved crossways. Check forsalt and put the dish in the centre of theoven for 25 minutes. It should simmerslightly and may appear to be dry earlier, but will need the full cooking time. Leaveto rest for 15 minutes.

HOW DO you improve on one of the most excitingmachines of the decade? It’s the question that hasfaced engineers from BMW, challenged to improveupon the eco-friendly i8 sports car. Yet now it appearsthey have come up with the answer: take off the roofand cram in more technology than you’ll find in anApple Store.

The German car maker has confirmed it will show aSpyder version of the i8 at the Consumer ElectronicsShow (CES), which takes place next month in Las Vegas.

Although the new i8 is technically still at theconcept stage, Harald Krüger, the head of BMW, hassaid the drop-top version of the hybrid sports car willgo on sale in the future, with company sourcessuggesting that it may be as soon as 2017. As a result,we expect the show model to be pretty close to theproduction version.

The standard i8 was the electric-petrol hybrid thatproved plug-in cars didn’t have to be anonymous-looking or boring to drive. Little wonder, then, thatwhen it went on sale last year there was a waiting listtime of more than 12 months.

With its clever hybrid drivetrain, the i8 is very nearlyas quick as a Porsche 911 Carrera S — hitting 62mph in4.4 seconds — but it can also cover 22 miles in electric-only mode. Its official fuel consumption figure is almost135mpg.

BMW first revealed a concept — pictured here, inupdated colours — for a roofless i8 at the Beijing motorshow in 2012. Plans stalled, though, and now it seemsKrüger, who took up the reins in May, has resurrectedthe project.

Aside from having a removable roof and a garishorange colour scheme, one of the main differencesbetween the Spyder and its sibling is that it will bepacked with gadgets.

Expect gesture-recognition features — such as theability to adjust music volume by rotating a finger inthe air — and touch-sensitive surfaces, with theprospect of small touchpads on the steering wheelreplacing buttons for radio stations or the cruise-control system.

Other developments include three-dimensionaldisplays that use colour and depth of field to showdrivers different information according toimportance, such as speed, fuel and battery power

levels. The i8 Spyder is also said to have a vast 21in digital

screen, similar to that in the Tesla Model S, displayingstereo, sat nav and other settings.

The biggest question mark over the new i8 couldbe its handling. The standard car was lauded for beinga brilliant driver’s machine, with superb body controland balance. Cutting the roof off any vehicle willalways affect stability — we’ll have to wait and see ifthat’s the case with the Spyder.

WITH A name chosen to appeal to Generation Selfie, and electrically powered motors that can zip it along asquickly as a hot hatchback, the new Volkswagen Budd-econcept is a far cry from the original, 1950 VolkswagenTransporter that went on to endear itself to a generationof global nomads, surf bums and families thatcelebrated flower power over nuclear power. So theobvious question is, will anyone warm to the Budd-e?

Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) inLas Vegas, the Budd-e previews both a new, funky familycar from VW and the next generation platform andcomponents – known as ModularElectric Drive Kit (MEB) - that willunderpin a range of electric cars from theGerman car maker.

Still reeling from the Dieselgateemissions rigging scandal, and facingthe prospect of being sued by America’sEnvironmental Protection Agency for asmuch as £14bn, Volkswagen’s topmanagement are powering ahead withthe electrification of its cars.

The four-seat Budd-e concept carfeatures a pair of electric motors, onebeneath the car’s nose and the other inthe back, which give it four-wheel driveand a combined power output of 235kW(315bhp). That makes it capable ofzipping from 0-62mph in just 6.9seconds.

Thanks to a new generation of

lithium-ion battery, the car is said to be theoreticallycapable of travelling 331 miles on a single charge.Plugging in to a high-powered, 150kW system wouldgive 80% of a battery charge in 30 minutes. However, theBudd-e’s batteries can also be topped up using awireless induction process, much like an electrictoothbrush, as VW anticipates improvements to theelectric car infrastructure and home charging units.

The electric powertrain isn’t all that’s beingpreviewed in this CES concept car. It demonstrates howcar makers like VW believe that the so-called Internet of

Things will see cars become more connected to peoples’everyday habits.

For example, when synced to the home’s smart-fridge, the car could remind the driver on their wayhome that the bread, milk and cheese are all going offtoday, and – heaven forbid - there’s no Chardonnay inthe wine chiller. VW has developed the technology inpartnership with LG, the Korean electronics giant.

Songs could be programmed to play at certain pointson a pre-planned journey. And when you arrive home, gesture recognition would mean the doors can open

themselves.Rear-wheel steering helps in tight

parking spots, and 3D digital displays andtouch pad sensors on the steering wheelpreview features coming to VWs of allshapes and sizes in years to come.

Will VW build the Budd-e, or just partsof it? Driving put the question to DrVolkmar Tanneberger, head of electronicdevelopment for VW and responsible forthe Budd-e project.

"The basic idea is to develop a modulartoolkit and take this flat battery into serialproduction, one motor on the front, oneon the rear. This is the MIB electricplatform.

You will see a car that looks a lot likethis, on the MIB platform, reachproduction. I can’t say exactly when, but2020 or thereabouts."

The Model X, Tesla’s first new car inthree years, was launched to much fanfarein 2015, but the company’s boasting ofthe “most advanced car yet” may havebeen a tad premature – just 208 cars wereactually delivered in the fourth quarter of2015, the first full quarter in which it wasavailable to buy.

A crossover (combining design cuesfrom SUVs and more traditional cars suchas hatchbacks), the Model X was unveiledin 2012, with plans for it to ship in 2013.That date slipped, first to 2014 and then to2015, before it was finally launched inSeptember of that year.

But a more realistic date is perhaps2016, since Tesla says it had only managedto build 507 of the cars by the end of lastyear. At the launch, Tesla’s chief executive,Elon Musk, warned that the company wasonly capable of building five cars a week, and was slowly ramping up productionwith the aim of a weekly output of“maybe, like, 800 cars a week”. In fact, by

the end of the year, it was producing 238a week.

The major constraints appeared to berelated to third-party suppliers of partssuch as door seals and seats. In November, the company admitted that it was havingsuch trouble sourcing the seats, which arecustom-moulded, that it had decided tostop outsourcing their production, instead manufacturing them in-house.

The electric car firm did manage tosupply more of its Model S sedan, however, delivering 17,192 of the carsduring the quarter, a 48% increase fromthe quarter before.

But the news wasn’t all happy there, either: one of the company’s carsreportedly caught fire and melted to acrisp while connected to a superchargerin Norway.

A Tesla spokesperson said that nobodywas harmed in the fire and that thecompany would share its findings after afull investigation had been carried out.

Tesla supplied just 208Model X cars in 2015

Christmas may be over but with the New Year brings thetransfer season as clubs dip their hands into their pocketsto try and improve their squads or provide cover for injuredplayers. And thus the gossip columns are in full swing asthey try and outguess the pub gossip guru and fantasyleague managers as to what will be happening in thetransfer window.

Starting with the Sun, they say that Everton strikerRomelu Lukaku, 22, wants to join Paris St-Germain or RealMadrid in the summer rather than Manchester United andthe Express note that Barcelona want Arsenal midfielderAaron Ramsey, 25, and Everton defender John Stones, 21while

Arsenal are set to spend a combined £52m on BorussiaMonchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, 23, and ParisSt-Germain's 20-year-old midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

After his interesting and entertaining interview after thisteam drew with Exeter City on Friday night, the Mirror saythat Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has grown frustratedwith striker Daniel Sturridge's persistent injury problemsand is ready to listen to offers for the 26-year-old.Meanwhile, it took an injury time penalty from WayneRooney to avoid a lot of blushes from a full strength squadat Old Trafford and apparently Tottenham boss MauricioPochettino is among the possible replacements for Louisvan Gaal being considered by Manchester Unitedexecutives. Tottenham are poised to make another bid forWest Brom striker Saido Berahino, 22, with a £20m packagethat includes England winger Andros Townsend, 24 whileLazio rejected a bid of 50m euros (£37.6m) fromManchester United for midfielder Felipe Anderson, 22, inAugust but have not received another bid from the RedDevils, according to the Italian side's director of sport.Manchester United have rejected an approach from ACMilan to take midfielder Marouane Fellaini on loan andhave told the Italian side it would cost £24m to buy the 28-year-old in a permanent deal and in what has not pleasedtoo many fans United boss Louis van Gaal does not expecthis club to make any signings during the January transferwindow.

Swansea will offer striker Wilfried Bony, 27, the chance toreturn to the Liberty Stadium and are also considering amove for Milan's Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong, 31.Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, 27, isconsidering his future with the German champions.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have allbeen interested in the Poland international say theIndependent. Everton are preparing a £21m bid forDynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko in the hope ofcapturing the 26-year-old before his value potentially risesafter Euro 2016. Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola isalready thinking about Manchester City and never enjoyed"true love" with his Bayern players, according to Germanylegend Lothar Matthaus. Guardiola has already informedManchester City he wants Borussia Dortmund midfielderIlkay Gundogan, 25, and Athletic Bilbao centre-backAymeric Laporte, 21, as part of his squad at Etihad Stadium. The agent of Manchester City playmaker Yaya Toure saysthat he fears that the 32-year-old could prove surplus toGuardiola's requirements if he takes charge at the Etihad.Guardiola sold Toure in 2010 when they were at Barcelonatogether.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted 23-year-oldBasel midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who is set to completea move to the Emirates in the next few days, will be theGunners' only signing during the January transfer window.Sevilla's Poland international midfielder GrzegorzKrychowiak, 25, says he is aware of interest from theGunners. Micah Richards, 27, was separated from furiousfans by stewards after Aston Villa's FA Cup draw at LeagueTwo Wycombe Wanderers. The Villa captain toldsupporters: "We are giving our best." Sunderland boss SamAllardyce wants the Premier League to follow Europeanleagues and introduce a winter break to help the welfare ofplayers.

Stoke striker Marko Arnautovic, 26, wants a weekly wageof more than £100,000 if he is to extend his contract, whichexpires at the end of next season. The Potters have a wageceiling of £70,000 a week. The Sunday Mirror is launching aKnight the Heroes of 1966 campaign to have all thesurvivors of England's triumphant World Cup campaignknighted.

Over in the land of social media Arsenal midfielderMesut Ozil, 27, features again, this time backing Prince Ali ofJordan in the Fifa presidential election campaign. FormerBarcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o, 34, has anunusual award to add to his collection. Eto'o, now atAntalyaspor, explained on Twitter: "I'm proud to beawarded the trophy for best transfer in Turkey 2015."Sunderland's 21-year-old goalkeeper Jordan Pickfordmade his competitive debut for the club in the 3-1 FA Cupdefeat by Arsenal. He wrote on Twitter: "The dream hasfinally come true! Making my debut for @SunderlandAFC isthe proudest moment for me and my family! Hard workpays off."

After Manchester United's 1-0 victory over SheffieldUnited courtesy of a penalty deep into injury time,Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger tweeted: "It'salways important to fight until the very end!" WBOintercontinental middleweight champion and West Bromfan Tommy Langford took his belt along to be

photographed with several Baggies players - includingChris Brunt - at the FA Cup tie with Bristol City. Langfordfights Lewis Taylor for the vacant Commonwealth title atthe Echo Arena in Liverpool next month. ManchesterUnited fan Leanne told 606 her side are the "most boringteam in the world" after they scraped a 1-0 win overSheffield United in the FA Cup third round.

Bolton manager Neil Lennon was unhappy with theplaying conditions for his side's 1-1 draw against Eastleighand described the pitch as "like a ploughed field." Andfinally Doncaster's Richard Chaplow did not just have tothink about his team's 2-1 defeat by Stoke as he made hisway home. Potters fans serenaded the follically challengedmidfielder with: "He looks like my thumb." But Chaplowtook the episode in good spirits, tweeting a video of theincident and writing: "When you've just played Stoke andget recognised by their fans on the train after - good to setbe fair #awaydays."

In a season of unwanted statistics for ManchesterUnited, here's another. They've been outscored by JavierHernandez and Angel Di Maria. Anthony Martial's second-half strike in the 2-1 home defeat by Norwich was their22nd in 17 Premier League games, a modest record in partdown to them having had just seven shots on target in theirlast four home league games. Over in Germany, Hernandez

claimed the only goal for Bayer Leverkusen againstIngoldstadt, his 10th in his last eight league appearances, and 18th in all since moving from Old Trafford for £7.3mfour months ago. Rio Ferdinand recently took to Twitter toreiterate his belief that the 27-year-old would have joinedthe list of the most prolific strikers seen at Old Trafford hadhe been given an extended run in the side.

Di Maria hasn't been quite so productive in front of goal, but nevertheless his double in a 3-0 victory over Caen wasthe Argentina midfielder's eighth and ninth since he joinedParis St Germain as United took a £14.5m loss in August, 12months after paying a British record £59.7m for his services. In all, that's 27 goals in 37 combined starts for the pair whowere deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal.As BBC Sport would say: “Add your own punchline.”
