Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 18: Sept/Oct 2015 Jamboree Joy! On Tuesday 20 th October the junior children went to the jamboree in Fishguard secondary school. The music was expressive and very loud. It was funny and there were lots of children there. The man who was leading the singing even squirted us with water! Everyone danced, sang and had lots of fun singing in Welsh. Cool Celtic Workshops Earlier this term Class 2 and 3 did a Celtic drama workshop with Chloe and Johnny from Milford Haven Torch Theatre. We pretended that we were Celts. Class 3’s name was The Silver Warriors and class 2’s name was The Firesome Dragons. We played lots of games. We had to interview each other and say their name and favourite thing to do. We all had a fantastic time and learned lots of extra information about the Celtic people. NATIONAL POETRY DAY We celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday 8 th October. Some people brought in their own and their parents’ favourite poems. Class 3 spent lots of the day finding and sharing poems. One of our favourites was ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan (which is our ‘poem of the week’ for this week). Well done to everyone who brought in poems from home. Zanzibar Teacher Visit Recently we had another visit from Madame Riziki, from our link school Rahaleo Primary in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Madame Riziki spent the week with us, visiting the classes, meeting the children and teaching lessons. Class One did some counting in Swahili, Madame Riziki taught Class Two about families and in Class Three she answered lots of our questions about life in Zanzibar. Also, she spent some time with our governors visiting local places of interest. Madame Riziki brought some interesting letters from the children at her school, and we are planning to write back to them soon. School Council News Congratulations to our new School Councillors: Oliver, Layla W, Zac SG, Daisy C, Lilly N, Ebony, Ollie, Olivia B, Isabella, Ethan D, Emilia C, Harry, Sam, Ewan and Kayleigh. Lots of people wanted to be on the School Council this year and Mrs Davies and Pupil Voice governor Mrs Mecklenburgh are looking forward to working with them. Don’t forget what our community police officers said about being safe on Halloween, everyone! Stephen Crabb comes to Coastlands! Last week we had a visit from local MP and Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb, who came to visit the school to hear more about our eco work. Mr Crabb came to a special assembly in which Tim Brew, from Sustainable Schools, presented us with our latest eco award: the Gold Award for Sustainable Schools. He was also keen to congratulate us for our success last term in the WWF Green Ambassadors Award, which earned us £2500 towards our outdoor classroom project. Accompanied by parent Sue Burton and our chair of governors Mrs Evans, the eco-warriors showed Mr Crabb around the school grounds and chatted with him about eco topics like energy and the environment. Well done to everyone who was involved in the day. Class 1’s Amazing Visit to the Church On 20 th October Class 1 went to St. Ishmaels Church and did a pretend baptism. Most of Class 1 went. All of them enjoyed it but it was quite a long walk. Betsan Clarke was the mum and Blake Compton was the dad. Father Andrew was there as well. Also Father Andrew’s wife was there and she lit all the candles and Betsan held one. Olivia held the baby, but it was very heavy. They were told a story and all of them liked that too. Class one really liked their day at the church.

PEACE DAYOn 21st September it is International Peace Day. In school the whole of Class 3 did posters and banners about the special day. Loads of children gathered and chose their groups and their work is now displayed outside Class 3 if you want to take a look.Class 3 had a poem of the week called:

Let There be Peace by Lemn Sissay Let there be peace

So frowns fly away like albatrossAnd skeletons foxtrot from cupboards,

So war correspondents become travel show presentersAnd magpies bring back lost property,

Children, engagement rings, broken things. That was the first verse of the poem. Mrs Davies put on a video of a man trying to make Peace Day recognised by the United Nations... and in the end he did!

WPC Thomas VisitOn 24th September, WPC Thomas came in and taught us about anti-social behaviour. She show us a series of small videos. The first video was about a girl coming out a shop and being insulted for nothing. The second video was about the same girl on her way home also being insulted - now that’s a lot of insulting! The third video was about two boys kicking a ball against her dad’s house and her dad is ill and needs peace and quiet. Then we pretended to be the main characters in each scene. Ethan was the dad of the girl who had been insulted. To round it up, I think we learned a lot about how our behaviour can affect others, and had lots of fun.

FANTASIC FIRST AIDLast month Will and Harry’s dad came to do some first aid with Class Two. They learned about the recovery position and how to check for injuries. Most of them had a good time and learned important things. A big thank you to Mr Gent for coming along.

Can you find these Halloween-themed words:Pumpkin, vampire, clown, witch, ghost, skeleton, skull?

Amazing ArtEarlier this term, one of our governors, Mrs Kehoe, came to do an art project with Class 3.They worked on portraits and their final pieces of work were faces made from natural sea-shore materials like shells and seaweed. The fabulous faces are on display in Class 3, so why don’t you pop in and have a look? Many thanks to Mrs Kehoe and hopefully she’ll come back and work with us next term!

ROALD DAHL DAYRoald Dahl is one of our favourite authors. Last month we all dressed up as a character from one of his books. We had an amazing day, with lots of witches, oompa loompas, Willy Wonkas, and so on. Mrs Davies had to be careful, because she came as Mrs Winter from ‘The Magic Finger’ and Olivia Beal came as the girl who turns her into a cat! It was a fun day.

Cackle CornerWhat happens when a flying witch breaks the sound barrier? You hear the broom boom!

What do you call a werewolf with no legs? Anything you like because he can’t chase you!

What happened when the wizard met the witch? It was a love’s first fright!

Don’t forget, it’s our Christmas Fayre at school on Saturday November 28th.

Have a lovely half term!
