DESPITE the constant criti-cism of the ruling ANC, the for-mer liberation movementturned political party walkedaway with yet another decisivewin last week during the na-tional elections.

Victory inhand, theANChasstill said there is much work tobe done.

The ruling party may havesecured another massive win,but according to the polls, thereis a decline in support for theparty.

In the 2009 national elec-tions the ANC walked awaywith the support of almost 66%of the voting population.

However, this year, theydropped to 62.15%.

Ward 61 councillor MichaelAbraham said the ANC hadpredicted its results addingthatthe party felt it was still well incontrol.

Abraham said it was impor-tant for the party to have wonKwaZulu-Natal in the way thatthey did.

“Facts have now shown allour detractors and naysayersthatweare still oneof thegreat-est organisations on the conti-nent and that our people stillbelieve this.

“We aimed for a 70%victoryin KZN and managed 64.5%which is still a massive victoryfor any political party.

“As for the opposition, theyhave been sufficiently decimat-ed and we knew it.

“Nationally we expected ourcurrent results and are notphased at all.

“There is a very clear mes-sage from South Africans. Thatmessage is that they want theANC toruleandwewillcontinueto do so.”

Abraham may have hiswork cut-outforhimthough,af-

ter the DA in Tongaat wonmostof the local voting districts by along way.

Responding to this, Abra-ham said: “It does not matterbecause these are nationalelections.Thelocalgovernmentelections are a different story.”

Nationally, the DA per-formedwell with a 22.23% vot-ing victory, giving them overfour millionvotes countrywide.

This is almost a millionmore votes from the previouselections,which sawtheofficialopposition take home a 16.7%voting support.

Commenting on the nation-al improvements and his owndecisive local victory, DA coun-cillor Brian Jayanathan said itwas clear that people wantmore.

“Our success has been builtaround our ongoing assistanceand seeing to the needs of thecommunity, helping everyonewho needed our help, beingpresentanumberof times in in-formal areas, being a party ofservice delivery and not aboutvotes.

“Votes are personal andmust come from within thehearts and minds of the voters.

“Unfortunately some votersare blinded; just a T-shirt, aplate of breyani and a promiseof a home or a job and they selltheir soul.”

Oneof thebiggest losersdur-ing this years elections wasCOPE, who dropped from thirdplace in 2009 with 7% of votersupport to less than one per-cent this year.

Political analysts have saidthe leadership infighting andthe emergence of the Econom-ic Freedom Fighters (EFF)could have been the main fac-tors influencing the decline.

NETCARE 911 paramedics and otheremergency services responded to anaccident on Hunslet Drive in PhoenixIndustrial Park, Phoenix on Sunday, 11May.

According to Netcare 911 spokesper­son Chris Botha, they found 12 peopleinjured.

“One person was found to be in acritical condition. Reports from thescene indicate that the people fell fromthe back of a light delivery vehicle.”

All the patients were treated onscene before being taken to hospital.In a separate incident Netcare 911 para­medics responded to an accident onthe M41 in Mount Edgecombe also onSunday, 11 May.

“Paramedics found that a motorvehicle left the roadway, went down anembankment and collided with a tree.A 20­year­old man was killed.”

MORE than 200 copies of ‘I Write My MindOut’, a collection of poems and short storiespublishedbytheLuthuliMuseum,were recent-ly handed over to the eThekwini Municipalityfor inclusion in all school and public librariesin Durban. POLICE are on the lookout fora foreign national Simangal-iso Sibanda (47) who was in-volved in a hit and run result-ing in the death of four chil-dren in the Ndwedwe area.

According toKwaZulu-Na-tal SAPS spokesperson Cap-tain Thulani Zwane, a war-rant for his arrest has been is-sued. He was working forAqua Transport and Truck

Hire in the area.“It is alleged the suspect

wasdrivingacaterpillar intheBhanoyi area, Ndwedwe,when he allegedly knockeddown and killed four chil-dren. “Three childrendied atthe scene and the fourth childdied in hospital the next day.

“The driver fled the sceneafter the accident and is cur-rently still at large.”

Fourcountsofculpableho-micide, reckless and negli-

gence driving and failing torender assistance after theaccident were opened at theNdwedwe police station.

MURDER suspect Sunil Ram-karan (46) who ran awayfrom the Verulam Magis-trate’s Court onMonday afterhis bail application, has beenfound.

Ramakaran was found onTuesday night by police. Hefaces charges of murder, at-tempted murder and the ille-gal possession of an unli-censed firearm. Ramkaran,

suspected of murdering hisgirlfriend Gengama Poogava-numlastmonth,wasletoutonR2 000 bail on 8 April. Herfamily had been up in armssaying they “feared for theirlives”, as he had threatenedthem before. “We can’t stopworrying that he will comeand attack us,” said Poogava-num’s daughter, Samantha.

She said Ramkaran wasnot her mother’s boyfriend.

Poogavanum in the stomachwith a 9mm pistol and thendumpedheroutside theVicto-ria Hospital on 3 April. Shewas taken toWentworth Hos-pital and died on 6 April.

Ramkaran is also facingcharges for attempting to killPrem Balram, the head of Re-action Unit South Africa (RU-SA) during his arrest, whichwas a chilling 27-hour man-hunt. He was caught in BrakeVillage, Tongaat.

Moodley said pupils needed to beguided from an early age.

“Once they pass this phase ofschool it becomes difficult to engagethese individuals.”

Tongaat police communicationsofficer, lieutenant Mandy Govenderwasalso full ofpraise. “This isanout-standing effort from the school. Wesee many cases of young children indifficult situations be it at home orschool.Afacilitysuchasthiswillsure-ly assist the youth of this school.”

IN commemoration of FamilyMonth, theTongaatChildandFami-ly Welfare Society embarked on aninitiative aimed at building a nationof confident, well adjusted and hap-py families on Saturday, 10 May.

The programme focused onstrengthening their growth as wellasimprovingandsustaininghealthyand stable families in the Tongaatcommunity.

It was an educational pro-gramme, attended by almost 85family members from the society’s

case load.Some of the activities included adrawing competition for youngerchildren, life skills and awarenesstalks, career guidance and hygienefor the adolescents and parentingskills for the adults.

Is computer use giving you real headaches?You’re not alone – many office workers expe­rience headaches triggered by frequent andextended use of their PCs.

The following tips can help you to bringcomputer­triggered headaches under con­trol. They have been provided by Dr ElliotShevel, Chairman of the South African Head­ache Society.

1. Centre your monitor ­ Position yourmonitor directly in front of you. If your moni­tor is off­centre, you may experience neckand shoulder pains since you will need totwist your body to see the screen or sit in anawkward position.

2. Keep your monitor at arm’s length ­Your monitor should be about arm's lengthaway when you're sitting back in your chair.Sitting too close or too far from the screencan strain your eyes. If you have a large moni­

tor you should sit slightly further back.3. Keep your eyes level to the top of your

screen ­ Position the top of your screen sothat it is level with your eyes, either by lower­ing your monitor or raising your chair.

A low screen will make you tilt your headforward to view the monitor, which is a com­mon cause of neck pain. If the monitor is toohigh, you may have to tilt your head back,which can cause neck and shoulder pain andincrease your exposure to glare from over­head lights (a common cause of headaches).

4. Tilt your monitor slightly upwardTilt the screen so that the base is slightly

closer to you than the top so that you canview the entire screen and the display moreclearly. Tilting the monitor downward isn'trecommended unless this is necessary to re­duce the glare from overhead lights or unlessyour monitor is too high. Source: HEALTH24

Thegoal of positive reinforcementistoincreasebehaviourthatwewant,

and reduce the behaviour that we donot want. Positive reinforcement is apsychological theory, falling underthe umbrella of behavioural therapy.

1) Do and Don’tIf I told you: “Do not think of a big,

black, hairy spider!”What image came up in your

mind? A vision of a big, hairy spider,right?

This is because our brains do notregisternegatives.Sobytellingsome-one, don’t do something, it brings upan image in theirminds of the behav-iour you have mentioned, “Don’tshout,” or “Don’t run.” Their mindsare going to be consumed with the

words“shout”and“run.”“Don’trun,”tells your child that running is unac-ceptable, but does not teach themwhat to replace the unacceptable be-haviour with.

When asking for a specific actionfromaperson,youneed tocommuni-cate with themwhat it is that you ex-pect, and not what you don’t want.

So what you want to do is clearlystate what it is that you expect fromthem,usingtheirname,toinitiallygettheir attention.

“Amy, it seems like you have a lotof energy right now, you should gooutside and play in the garden, orcome help me in the kitchen and we

could...”You could also ask themwhat it is

thattheywouldenjoydoinginthemo-ment and discuss their options withthem. Thisway, you are getting themtobeginthinking,forthemselves,thatthere are always alternatives andthey can do something productivewith the energy they have, and that itisnotabadthingtobeexcitedanden-ergetic. Whatever their reply, praisethem for thinking of it, and if it is notpossibleforthemtodowhattheyhavementioned, explain logically to themwhy it isn’t possible, and ask them tothink of something else that is moreappropriate for the moment.

The Hunger Games and Twi-light sagasare just twoofmany re-cent bestselling series that are re-garded as literary manna when itcomes to milking teen and 20-somethingangst and skyrocketingsales for publishing houses.

Let me see if I am able to sum-marise the intricate, unique plotsfor readers ofthiscolumn:Twilightdealswith forbidden love betweenasparkly, centuries’oldmalevam-pire and a 17-year-old human fe-male and all of the emotionalquandaries that would entail.

TheHungerGamesdealswithateen that has to fight her waythrough a dystopian post-apoca-lyptic world and alloftheemotion-

al quandaries that would entail. Itwas tough, but I think that aboutcaptures all of the subtle nuancesand complexities of each.

Both series have ‘taken theworld by storm’ and have seensuch success that they have beenmade into hitmovies by that otherbeacon of hope when it comes toquality production – Hollywood.

For reasons knownonly to per-petual crack users, Twilight hasbeen compared to the novels ofJane Austen. Perpetual tic usershave rated the series as ‘one of thebest reads ever’.

The Hunger Games has re-ceived even more favourable re-views, even though someone likehorror-writer Stephen King hasgiven the series a ‘B’ because it’spredictable and adults would beabletopickuponthewritingflaws.Pot, kettle, black?

WhatFyodorDostoevskywouldhave thoughtof this isopen for de-bate, although I am guessing poi-son intravenously administeredover a decade or so would be hiswish.

As for comparing the writinginTwilight to Austen; JaneAustenwasan inimitablewriter.Herskillswereandareadmired internation-ally by academics and plebs likeyours truly.Andhercharactersac-tually had...well, character. Let us

compare this toTwilight. ATORRENTIAL down pour pri-ortotheCheckoutHalfMaratha-on and steady rainfall through-out the race did little to dampenthespiritsofparticipantsastheydeparted the King's Park Stadi-um for the Checkout 21km and10km challenge this weekend.

HostingClubCheckoutVeru-lam Falcons pulled out all thestopstodelivera“fantastic”racealong the Durban beachfront.

The slowdrizzle and flat andfast course was welcoming forparticipants.

Theopportunitytorunonthepromenade past the SuncoastCasino and amphitheatre wasan ideal pre-Comrades tonic formarathonaspirantsandallroadrunning and walking enthusi-asts.

Over 1100 participantscrossed the finish line boastingcredible times. The festive at-mospherealsopromptedquick-ies to post splendid times as Jo-seph Munywoki, running forPhantane, raced through thecourse in 67 minutes; a minuteahead ofMaxedElite runnerEl-more Sibanda.

Sithulisiwe Zhou, also fromPhantane, was the first womanfinishing in 78 minutes, eightminutes ahead of Debbie Perryfrom Boxer. Local VAC runnerSmiley Naidoo was the firstwalker home.

Theshorter10kmsawLungi-da Mdedelwa from Boxer ACblitzed through the race in 30minutes,sevensecondsaheadofStephen Katam from NedbankAC.

Durban's very own OlympicrunnerTanithMaxwell,anotherBoxerrunner,wasthefirstwom-an ahead of Nedbank runnerFikile Mbutho.

Maxwell finished in 36 min-utes, three minutes ahead ofMbutho.

All participants compliment-ed the raceorganisers andwerethrilledwith the runner friendlyroute.

Race organisers Krish Vadi-velu,AmrasMoodleyandDannyGovender executed the deliveryof a “fabulous” race which waswell received by all.

Falcons extended their grati-tude to anchor sponsors theCheckout Group for their “mag-nanimous” sponsorship.

BELGATEputupan “inspiring”performancein their Astro Turf game against BuffelsdaleGiants despite losing 9-6 on Wednesday, 7May.

Belgate were 4-1 down during half timeandmanaged toput in fivegoals in thesecondhalf.

The match was played at a cracker pacewith the young inexperienced Belgate teamtaking up the lead early.

This createdmany clear chances formuchofthegameandtheyoutplayedBuffelsdaleGi-ants in every way despite the Giants being amoreexperienced teamwhoplay inbothout-door and Futsal fixtures in the SAFA Tongaatleague.

Even in the second stanza Belgate contin-ued from where they left off.Theycontinuedpressurising theGiantsand

in the first 10 minutes they scored twomoregoals.

However, in the 13th minute of the game aBelgate playerwas fouled by a Giants player.Strangely, the free kickwas awarded to Gi-

ants.The Belgate player challenged the referee

and as a result the player was red carded.This changed the image of the game.At this stage Belgate was reduced to four

players and Buffelsdale Giants took advan-tage and managed to score a few goals to re-duce the deficit.

In the last few minutes Giants slotted thetwo decisive that levelled scores and at thisstage Giants came from behind to steal thegame.

AfterthegameBuffelsdaleGiantsadmittedthattheywere“outplayed”andthattheywere“lucky to win”.
