Coastal Sediments ‘19 is devoted to promoting an interdisciplinary exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge among researchers in the fields of

coastal engineering, geology, oceanography, and related disciplines, with the theme of “Advancing Science & Engineering for Resilient Coastal Systems.”

The theme of the conference is highlighted by the two keynote addresses delivered by Britt Raubenheimer, Ph.D. — “The Nearshore Water-Land System During Major Storms” — and Joan Pope — “Past, Present, and Future Considerations in Coastal Engineering.” The two keynote addresses are followed by nearly 260 profes-sional presentations in four concurrent oral sessions and two poster sessions during three days.

J.A. (Dano) Roelvink, professor of Coastal Engineering and Port Development at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and senior specialist at Deltares, will receive the 2019 Coastal Award at the Conference Awards Lun-cheon on May 30.

Optional Short Courses will be offered in a full-day format on 27 May 2019. Short course topics are “Gen-Cade,” “Advanced modelling with XBeach-nonhydro-static,” “Coastal Imaging Data Processing,” and “Data Science for Coastal Engineers and Scientists.”

Optional Technical Tours will be offered in full- and half-day formats on 31 May 2019. The half-day excur-sion will feature “Pinellas County Coastal Projects & Geomorphic Features,” including Sand Key, Madeira Beach, John’s Pass, Treasure Island, Blind Pass, and Up-ham Beach. The full-day excursion will explore “Beach-es, Spits and Ephemeral Islands North and South of the Tampa Bay Entrance,” including Longboat Pass, Cortez, Holmes Beach, Passage Key and Mullet Key.

Dano Roelvink

J.A. (Dano) Roelvink Professor of Coastal Engineer-ing and Port Development at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and senior specialist at Deltares,

the Netherlands. Dano Roelvink is one of the early developers of Delft3D and received the International Coastal Engineering Award from the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2017.

Roelvink is a strong proponent of international scien-tific cooperation with various parties in order to further the state-of-the-art in morphodynamic modelling and has set up collaborative projects with the U.S. Geologi-cal Survey, the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as with numerous institutes in France, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Brazil and West Africa. He has initiated and currently leads the development of XBeach, an open-source model for storm impacts on beaches, dunes, barriers and reef coasts. In 2011, together with Ad Reniers, he published a best-selling “Guide to modeling coastal morphology” with World Scientific. His latest endeavours include the development of a free-form coastline model, ShorelineS, and a wind-driven model Duna, coupled with XBeach.

Starting in 2001, the Coastal Award has been presented every two years alternately at the Coastal Dynam-ics conference and the Coastal Sediments conference through coordination between the organizing commit-tees of these two technical specialty conferences. The Organizing Committee of Coastal Sediments ’19 joins conference participants and the extended research com-munity in celebrating Prof. Roelvink’s research contri-butions in engineering and science directed towards better understanding and working with nature.

BRITT RAUBENHEIMER:The Nearshore Water-Land System During Major Storms

Britt Rauben-heimer is a Senior Scientist at Woods

Hole Oceanographic Institution. Rauben-heimer’s career in coastal oceanography began in 1988 working with Abby Sallenger at the newly founded St. Petersburg USGS on studies of the Isle Dernieres Barrier Islands, LA. This work inspired her to get a Ph.D., which she received from Scripps Inst. Oceanography in 1996. Rauben-heimer’s research interests include surf and swash-zone pro-cesses, alongshore currents, interactions between waves and the groundwater, and morphological evolution of beaches, tidal flats, and inlets. Most recently, she and her students and collaborators have been focused on feedbacks between oceanographic, morphological, hydrogeological, and geo-technical processes during major storms.

JOAN POPE:Past, Present, and Future Considerations in Coastal Engineering

Joan Pope retired in 2012 after 38 years with the U.S. Army Engineers having served in a

variety of positions in the Buffalo District, the Coastal Engineering Research Center, the Coastal and Hydraulics Lab, the Engineering Research and Development Center, and culminating in a position at Corps Headquarters. Her last posi-tion was as Assistant Director for Civil Works Research and Development at Corps Headquar-ters where she was responsible for coordinating and oversee-ing all water resource-related research and development con-ducted by the Corps. Amongst her accomplishments, Joan has conducted numerous project specific studies, directed the development of the Coastal Engineering Manual and the National Shore Erosion Control Development and Dem-onstration Program (Section 227), and was one of the early developers of the Regional Sediment Management program. Joan has a BS in secondary education/Geology from the State University of NY at Oneonta, a MS in Geology/Oceanogra-phy from the University of Rhode Island and has completed advanced studies in Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia. Since retiring she has been employed as a coastal consultant with various firms and continuing work in sup-port of the Corps.

Technical Colleagues: CS19 will provide an in-ternational forum for technical discussions and networking with coastal engineers, geologists,

oceanographers, and others interested in the physical processes of coastal sediments and morphology change. Professionals, graduate students, and active retirees are invited to exchange knowledge, experience, and col-laborate.

Students: A student paper contest will award the top two student achievers with a monetary award, to be an-nounced at the Awards Luncheon on Thursday, 30 May 2019. Students must be enrolled full-time at an accred-ited college or university.

Proceedings: All registered delegates will receive an electronic copy of the published proceedings on CD‐ROM.

Conference information: The Conference Information desk is located off the Grand Palm Colannade, next to the Speaker Prep room.

Oral presentation information: All presenting authors are requested to submit their presentation files to the technical staff in the author preparation room in ad-vance of the scheduled time of their session. Presenters should try to arrive to their session rooms 10 minutes prior to the session to meet the chairperson and ensure the presentation material is ready. Your chairperson is in charge of overall time control, presenters should plan on speaking for about 15 minutes and allow 5 minutes for questions.

The Author Preparation Room will be in the Confer-ence Office on the Grand Palm Colonnade (see floor-plan), and will be open during the following times:n Monday, May 27: 14:00-18:00n Tuesday, May 28: 07:00-17:30n Wednesday, May 29: 07:00-17:30n Thursday, May 30: 07:00-15:00

Laptops will be available to proof your presentations; authors are required to turn in their presentations as far in advance as possible (and no later than 07:15 for morning sessions and 12:00 for afternoon sessions on the day when they will be speaking). This will ensure your presentation will be loaded on the appropriate computer prior to your session.

Session chairs: All technical session chairs should check in at the media/author preparation room prior to their sessions to inform CS19 staff that they are present. All presentations need to start at the time indicated on the program schedule and end in a total of 20 minutes (15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for discussions). This is to allow delegates coming from other technical sessions to attend the presentations they planned. If the presentation and discussions end before the 20 minutes are up, the following presentation should not start until its designated time.

Session chairs should arrive at their technical session room at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start of their session to meet presenters and insure presentation material is ready for the session. The session chair will have a form to complete indicating the name of each presenter that presented a paper with the session. All sessions will have a chairperson’s book to provide neces-sary introductions and announcements, and a student volunteer to assist with any technical issues.

Four optional full-day Short Courses will be offered on Monday, May 27:

Short Course 1:

GenCade short course Instructors: Rusty Permenter, Yan Ding, Sung-Chan Kim, Hans Hanson, Richard Styles Description: A full-day short course on the 1-D long-shore transport and inlet evolution model, GenCade. GenCade is designed to predict shoreline change for planning and engineering design and account for the presence of inlets as well as coastal structures such as groins and breakwaters. Cross-shore transport due to dune erosion, aeolian sand transport and overwash as well as wave asymmetry are also represented in the model. GenCade is used for regional sediment manage-ment studies including beach fills, inlet bypassing, and channel maintenance as well as other applications that require information on shoreline evolution for different environmental impact conditions (e.g., sea level change) or engineering design alternatives. It can accommodate time scales from days to centuries and spatial scales from project to regional. The latest version includes uncertainty analysis based on Monte Carlo simula-tions. Model setup, processing and display are executed through the SMS (Surface Modeling System). The workshop will discuss model background, setup, and provide a hands-on session to allow users to explore applications. A temporary license will be provided to users without SMS. Class limit is 25 people.

Short Course 2:

Advanced modelling with XBeach-nonhydrostatic Instructors: Robert McCall, Kees Nederhoff Description: This course will focus on the modelling of sandy, gravel and vegetated coasts with XBeachNH+, the new non-hydrostatic, wave-resolving mode of XBeach. Participants will learn about the relative im-portance of processes, how to define and set up an area model, what model settings to use, and how to visual-ize. Participants are assumed to have a basic knowledge of XBeach (can be learned in advance using the online tutorial).

Short Course 3:

Coastal Imaging Data Processing Short Course Instructors: Meg Palmsten, Kate Brodie (possibly Shawn Harrison, Jenna Brown, Rob Holman) Description: The Coastal Imaging Research Network (CIRN) short course will provide both the background and hands on experience in coastal imaging for new us-ers. Attendees will learn how to design their own single camera station or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data collection and how to process and analyze data using the open source CIRN UAV Toolbox available at https://coastal-imaging-research-network.github.io.

Short Course 4:

Data Science for Coastal Engineers and Scientists Instructors: Fernando Mendez, Evan Goldstein Description: In this short course, we will show recent advances in machine learning techniques and in multi-variate statistics for continuous and categorical vari-ables. These approaches can help to better understand coastal processes and coastal hazards at different spatial and temporal scales.

Trolley ServiceSuncoast Beach Trolley stops right outside of both Island Grand and RumFish Beach Resort. The trolley allows visitors to explore the beach communities from Clearwater to Pass-A-Grille without the worry of driv-ing and parking. The trolley also has connections to regular bus service in Pinellas County.

Pinellas County Coastal Projects & Geomorphic Features • 8:30 — Depart from conference hotel.

• 9:00 — Sand Key Federal Beach Nourishment Project: Beach visit and opportunity to learn about this successful federal beach nourishment program.

• 10:00 — Johns Pass: Visit to Johns Pass at the southern end of Madeira Beach to see inlet sedi-mentation and stabilization structures.

• 11:00 — Treasure Island Erosion Hotspot: Visit to an erosion hotspot where physical processes responsible for the hotspot formation will be dis-cussed and management strategies adopted to fight the persistent erosion will be described.

• 11:45 — Blind Pass and Upham Beach T-Head Groins: Description of inlet management plan with focus on dredging and sediment budget manage-ment, as well as T-head groin project built down-drift of the inlet.

• 12:30 — Return to conference hotel.

Full-day tour:

Beaches, Spits and Ephemeral Islands North and South of the Tampa Bay Entrance • 8:00 — Depart from conference hotel.

• 9:00 — Longboat Pass: Visit to see inlet features and leaky terminal groin, talk about inlet manage-ment with emphasis on sediment budget and sedi-ment management.

• 10:00 — Cortez Permeable Adjustable Groins: Walk on a PAG (Permeable Adjustable Groin) to see this innovative groin design concept that allows for adjustment of groin permeability by adding/remov-ing pre-cast concrete blocks.

• 10:45 — Holmes Beach/Manatee Public Beach: Visit the Manatee beach nourishment project and learn about history of this successful beach nour-ishment program.

• 11:30 (time permitting) — Passage Key Inlet: Walk to the north of Anna Maria Island to see the Tampa Bay entrance from the south, discussions around inlet dredging and sediment management and geomorphic features such as spits and ephemeral islands that develop on the inlet shoals.

• 13:00 — Lunch at restaurant TBD

• 14:30 — Mullet Key Tour: Curved sand spit located on the north entrance on the Tampa Bay. Visit whale bone sites, a historic fort and interesting geomorphic features include the sand dunes, la-goon, spit and spit breaches, shoals and ephemeral islands. The more adventurous can go for a quick swim at the end of the tour.
