President’s Message Greetings, CPC members! WOW! What a great trip 12 of our members had to Hendersonville. We went to shoot the waterfalls that are in the DuPont State Forest. Members who went included: Tom McCabe, Mike McCulley, Mike Carter, Alan Welch, Mary

O’Neill, Rosemary Osterhaus, Janice Arthur, Robert Hendrix, Jerry Weiss, Jeanne Julian, Rick Meyer and me. Friday was overcast so we did not get any spectacular sunset shots from the mountain overlook, but we got some interesting blue tones. Saturday was overcast and misty with some light rain later in the day. It was actually good for shooting the waterfalls. Sunday was pretty much the same so we shot an old stone bridge in northern South Carolina before we headed back to New Bern. All in all, we had an amazing trip. Ed Hall and Rick Meyer are volunteering their time to take professional head shots for staff in the O. Marks building in New Bern. The $25 per person will be donated to the Nursing Home project. Nine have been prepaid and there will be 11 more so that will be $500. If you know of any other professionals groups that might need this service, let Ed know.

We had a large number of entries in the major competition last month. It was wonderful to see so many entries. Congratulations to the winners and to all who entered photos. We continue to say that it is important for you to really like your pictures—in the end the only one you have to really please is yourself. Hope you attend the meeting at Centenary Methodist Church on Saturday May 11th at 9:30 a.m.!

Competition recognizes excellence, provides feedback by Jeanne Julian

Judges Mona Sadler and Zach Frailey had their

work cut out for them: the Coastal Photo Club’s major Spring Competition—one of two juried contests held each year for members—attracted dozens of fine images in all three categories.

Members may submit up to three images in each of three categories: color, monochrome, and visionary. Photos must have been taken after January 2012.

“We had an array of wonderful images to be inspired by,” said CPC president Judy Hills. “The judges had a difficult job. We appreciated their expertise and learned a lot from their comments.”

Both judges are professional photographers with extensive experience. Mona Sadler, whose studio is Coastal Pet Portraits, has been certified as a Master in

photography and digital imaging by the Professional Photographers of America. She has volunteered as a judge for CPC competitions in the past. Zach Frailey has a Bachelor of Science in Communications Media from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and freelances through The Uprooted Photographer, his business located in New Bern.

Zach Frailey and Mona Sadler admire Alan Welch’s “The Edge of the World.” See all of the award-winning images from the CPC’s major spring competition in the Club Gallery, page 11.

Mona opened the judges’ review by using one of

her own photographs—a dramatic composite of an alligator, appropriate for the club’s “visionary” category—to highlight qualities that exemplify an outstanding image. One tip to remember, she pointed out, is that the viewer’s eye is drawn almost instinctively to the brightest part of the image. That’s why, in her example, “the center of interest is the whitest part of the print.”

She also mentioned the meticulous editing that resulted in her image’s effectiveness, reminding

Page 5: Coastal Photo Club NewsJudging of the Spring Major Photo Competition 1. Mona Sadler is a Master Photographer and Master of Electronic Imaging. 2. Zach Frailey, “The Uprooted Photographer,”

Coastal Photo Club News May 2013 4

photographers that their work doesn’t end when the shutter releases.

“I had to put all those teeth in there and paint all those bubbles,” she pointed out.

Finally, she reminded everyone that “the biggest chance to sell your print is by naming it.” Hence, her

intimidating reptile portrait is entitled, “Don’t Swim in My Pond.”

Following this introduction, the competition committee (Ed Hall, Archie Lewis, and Laura Marcum) carefully handled the presentation of each photograph. One by one, they were passed

through the club’s custom-built light box. Mona provided a helpful tip: to anticipate this kind of spotlight on your print, see if it passes muster under the bright beam of your stove’s hood light.

The judges independently evaluated each work; their respective rankings from 1 to 10 were combined for a final score. Occasionally they would move in for a closer examination of the print on display, looking for sensor dust, under- or over-sharpening, and precision of focus. The assembled CPC membership tried to refrain from reacting out loud, but sometimes the images were just too impressive, and resulted in whispered admiration, oohs and ahs, or chuckles.

After comparing the finalists, Mona and Zach awarded top honors in the color category to Tom McCabe of New Bern for “Ashleigh.” Alan Welch of Bridgeton won in both the monochrome and visionary categories with “Dark Piper” and “The Edge of the World.”

Alan answered members’ questions about the process behind his fantastic image of a ship sailing through a zodiac-studded blackness toward a vast cataract. He said it was made up of seven photographs, including one of Niagara Falls and one of “The Wolf,” a Tall Ship that visited New Bern last year. He used Photoshop (which he called “software of the gods”) for editing. “It took a week to cut the boat out,” of the original image, he said.

Chuck’s black-and-white portrait of a male lion also prompted a question: how did he manage to

elicit that piercing gaze? “I hung a pork chop around my neck,” Chuck jokingly replied.

For those photographers whose work didn’t quite capture the judges’ hearts and minds, there is always next time. If you have a special subject, Zach said, “change your perspective,” and it might have more appeal.

Mona agreed. “Rework it and you just might have something,” she said.

All of the award-winning images, listed in the minutes on page 2, appear in the Club Gallery, pages 11-14.

Club Competition Update

CPC members are invited to participate in themed “mini competitions” at most meetings (other than scheduled major competitions in the fall and spring). You’ll find the guidelines for submitting prints to competitions at http://coastalphotoclub.com/ at “competition rules.”

The mini-comp “challenges” for 2013 incorporate a theme and a technique or style intended to enhance the subject.

May Theme: forsaken, such as old barns, buildings; technique: panning shot (panorama) either vertical or horizontal.

June Theme: spinning/motion; technique: slow shutter speed or shutter priority. July Theme: boats, docks, and piers; technique: low angle. August Theme: flowers; technique: bokeh (blurred background)/ narrow depth of field.

Mona Sadler explains how technique can make the subject of a photograph more eye-catching. Photo by Susan Williams

October Theme: street performers; technique: street photography. November Fall competition---no mini-comp. December Theme: still life; technique: using three designated props, such as a book, a cup, and a third accessory (to be announced later). Club welcomes new member: Helmut Treschan New member Helmut Treschan was born in

Germany during WWII and came to New Bern in 1954. That’s where he got his first camera.

“It was a simple 35mm that my parents obtained with Green Stamps from the Colonial Store, no longer there, behind the former main post office downtown (now the Federal Courthouse),” Helmut recalls. “The grocery store would give you the stamps and you could exchange them for various gifts. It was a fairly

simple camera, but it made me learn all about shutter speed and f-stops.”

“I still have some Kodachrome slides I shot in high school when we had our Latin banquet,” he said.

Helmut learned most everything he knows about photography by reading books and technical articles, and continues that practice to this day.

While that first camera launched a lifelong interest in photography, it did not influence his choice of profession. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, Helmut worked as a CPA with a global accounting firm for a number of years and later with private companies in various financial capacities.

Along the way he bought a Nikon camera, then an F4 film camera. He still uses the various Nikon lenses he acquired over the years.

“This is why I want to continue on the Nikon path, but haven't made a final commitment yet to a DSLR,” he said. He’s still looking.

In the meantime, he’s using a Nikon 1 system camera. “It has a small sensor, but it is light and a great traveling camera when you are not in the mood to carry all the heavy equipment that the full-format camera entails. And it gives me the opportunity to use my full-frame lenses with an adapter.”

That mobility is important since Helmut often takes his camera far afield. His travels have taken him to the Russian Far-East (Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) and also to St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“I was fortunate to be there when Russia celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Victory Day, or the end of WWII,” Helmut said. “It was quite an event: troops parading past our platform from the various parts of Russia, cannons shooting, and finally a parade to the Memorial Site of the city.”

He has also traveled to Australia, Germany, Poland, Italy, Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria, and South America. He’d love to do more traveling in the USA and also in South America, especially Chile and Ecuador. His other interests include canoeing and building computers for personal use.

“I hope to learn more from the club members who have a much deeper knowledge base and wider interests than mine,” Helmut said, “and I hope to be a supporting member in the club wherever needed.”

Inspiration and Fun

New exhibit at Sylvan Heights Bird Park A new exhibit, "The Landing Zone" opened on March 23rd at Sylvan Heights Bird Park. “It is a delightful

place, offering a unique experience: feeding and being a landing post for adorable, hungry parakeets,” reports CPC member Susan Williams. “You may purchase a seed stick for $1.00, but I assure you that is not necessary for the colorful birds, also known as budgies, to explore your feet, arms, watches, cameras, whatever! In the same exhibit, you can buy flamingo food and have these beautiful exotic creatures eating right out of your hand.” Now is a good time to visit the park; the scarlet ibis are back and nesting in the tree; their black offspring will be making an appearance soon. Juvenile ibis are also on display. They are in the South American region of the park, right across from "The Landing Zone." www.shwpark.com

Photography exhibit in Raleigh “Wanderlust: Photographs by Alec Soth,” Julian T. Baker Jr. Gallery, through June 30, 2013. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, photographer Alec Soth (b. 1969)

specializes in large-format color photographs that tell the stories of specific places. A current exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art features 15 photographs by Soth from the collection of Allen G. Thomas Jr. from two recent series, Sleeping by the Mississippi (1999–2002) and NIAGARA (2004–2005). Soth traveled the length of the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, over four years to create Sleeping by the Mississippi, a compelling body of work that features a place, the people who live there, and the passage of time. The NIAGARA series includes portraits of newlyweds and the honeymoon hotels found in and around Niagara Falls, as well as images of life after the honeymoon. The exhibition is made possible, in part, by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources; the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc.; and the William R. Quote of the Month

“Let us first say what photography is not. A photograph is not a painting, a poem,

a symphony, a dance. It is not just a pretty picture, not an exercise in contortionist techniques

and sheer print quality. It is or should be a significant document, a penetrating statement,

which can be described in a very simple term—selectivity.”

flowers at the 55-acre Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham. Often spoken of as

"the crown jewel of Duke University," Duke Gardens is recognized as one of the

premier public gardens in the United States, renowned both for landscape

Club Gallery Haliwa Saponi Powwow

Powwow wows Club A field trip to Hollister, NC, on April 20th was a fascinating, first-time experience for Coastal Photo Club members. They spent several hours at the 48th annual Haliwa Saponi tribal powwow, a celebration of Native American cultural heritage. Club participants gained significant experience in shooting candids of people in motion. Dance competitions, drummers, vendors, and fond families and friends provided abundant subject matter; Rosemary Osterhus returned to New Bern with 800 images in her camera! Left: Janice Arthur, Rick Meyer, Jeanne Julian, Doug Carawan, Robert Hendrix, and Carol Lawler, who initiated the trip. Group photo and “Indian Princess with Cape” (below) by Rosemary Osterhus.

Behind the scene Nancy Burt was inspired to research styles of Native American dancing following her visit to the Haliwa Saponi powwow. She identified the kinds of dances portrayed in her photography at the event. She was also delighted with the children and the regalia there.

New!: Question of the Month

Robert Hendrix was the only one to correctly identify the mystery photo (left) submitted by Jim Dugan last month. It is the walkway that crosses Pollock Street from Carolina Creations to Christ Episcopal Church. Congratulations, Robert! That’s the last “Know Where in New Bern?” feature for our newsletter.

On to something new with this issue: the Question of the Month. For May: what’s your “shot that got away?” Mike McCulley: “I don’t know if you remember seeing the faint rainbow over an island in one of my shots during the Star Clipper ship cruise slide show [at the March meeting]. But, it appeared over the island during a rain shower not long after we returned to the ship from a land excursion. I had left my camera in our stateroom on the second deck to have a drink at the bar, which was on the main deck. The rainbow was gorgeous and totally encompassed the ship! So, I sped back below to the stateroom, as quickly as I could with a new knee, to retrieve my camera. But, when I returned, the rainbow had faded—almost—away….” Question of the Month for June: What’s your favorite shot of a friend or loved one, and why?
