Participant Domains,
Coaching Roles and Status:
Evidence from the UK
J North
Leeds Metropolitan University
Coaching Domains, Roles
and Status (Concepts)
•Participants/performers’ wants/needs vary (Côté and
Hay, 2002)
•Different types of participants/perfomers want/need
different types of coaches (Lyle, 2002; Côté et al.,2007)
•These insights should inform how we frame coaching
as a profession (ECC, 2007)
•Conditions vary between country/sport – thus we may
need a broad and adaptable definition of ‘profession’
(Duffy et al., in press)

Key Messages
•The evidence backs up participant
domains and coaching roles
•There is further evidence to suggest
that we should think more carefully
about the ‘status’ of the coaching
workforce (in relation to notions of
professionalism)
•Good quality workforce data is
essential for understanding and
changing coaching
