How many men does it take to throw a summer party that is innovative and sensational? The answer is

three; Jesse Tostado, Daniel Porras and Giorg Tierez. This trinity of tomfoolery takes this partying thing pretty seriously. CV Weekly caught up with the tremendous trio at a local hangout to get a feel for what to expect this Saturday, August 23rd at the Coachella Valley Weekly sponsored Burning B-Day Bash III, a two-venue pool party and live/DJ music extravaganza in its third year.

The first half of the free event will be a pool party held at The Curve Palm Springs Hotel from 12 p.m.-7 p.m. The lineup includes All Night Shoes, EeVaan Tre & The Show, Femme A, The Hive Minds, Guy Worden, Pocket Yellow and Synthetix. The party reconvenes at Bar in Palm Springs from 9 p.m.-1:30 a.m. with THR3 STRYKES,

Burning Bettie, Deadend Paradox and Spankshaft. The liberal cast of musicians and DJs are a ‘Who’s Who’ of in demand artists. It is impressive to gather them in one evening and incorporating two separate venues in one evening is a stretch but according to the buzz is working.

The event humbly began in 2012 as Burning Bettie’s coming out party and doubled as the birthday party for the unconventional Tierez. The first BBB took place in the Tierez home and included 70 of his closest friends along with performances by Alt/Punk triad Deadend Paradox and the now defunct reggae outfit F-13. The second annual BBB took place at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert with a significantly larger crowd and performances by DEP and equally rocking threesome Drop The World.

Joining them again this year will be DEP who announced they will be performing new material. The short legacy of BBB has created memorable performances and now has allowed for the inclusion of DJ music and a more diverse array of artists. Enter PLab.

Tostado and Porras collectively form PLab (Party Like A Boss), a multifaceted production company that specializes in all types of music-related events. Formed out of a passion for the night life, PLab co-founder Tostado admitted, “We go out a lot!” That inkling for going out has led to a cutting-edge approach to entertainment. Using influences like the Coachella Music Festival, PLab continues to show that they are focused on continuing to build the local party scene. Porras ruminates on Coachella, “Why can’t we do something like that and keep it local?” Porras has visited many different venues in Los Angeles. “We’ve seen the best and the worst of events all over Southern California. We want to do big things and we believe we have the personalities to pull it off.” The large personas have attracted some of the best DJs in the valley. PLab contains in its roster their very own resident DJs, they include All

Night Shoes, Femme A and Guy Worden. PLab are becoming luminaries of the party scene.

Even these big personalities have to pay the bills. Both Tostado and Porras keep day jobs which only fuels their fire for everything PLab. Tostado works as an Emergency Medical Technician at Eisenhower Medical Center and Porras studied civil engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. In talking with them, they may have VIP attitudes but they are grounded like no others. The VIP attitude is disseminated to their patrons. PLab wants everyone who attends their events to feel like a VIP.

PLab has facilitated events at Blu @ Copa Nightclub, Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar, Tilted Kilt and their biggest event to date, FE5T. They have also participated in philanthropic endeavors by arranging entertainment for the Relay for Life event. With BBB PLab and Tierez are keeping everything local. As Tierez puts it, “All the artists are based locally and cover every angle of music that will focus every ear in one area.” BBB III is set to surpass the attendance of both previous events combined. “It’s all about the valley and its artists. We will look to expand every year and bring attention to this mecca of music,” Tierez proclaims. Tierez, Tostado and Porras are already scouting venues and locations for next year’s event.

BBB III is proudly sponsored by CV Weekly, Strata Tattoo Lab, The Vapor Door in Palm Springs, ExtethicX.Obession Massage & Wax Bar, Crater Lake Vodka, Coldcock Whiskey, and Discount Shuttle of the Desert

who will be providing transportation to and from the venues to all cities in the Coachella Valley at discount rates. There are also discounted room rates at The Curve by using promo code ‘PLab’ for Friday the 8/22 and Saturday 8/23.

DJ FeMMe AUp and coming DJ Annie Flores, also known

as DJ Femme A, has been captivating audiences around the valley with her

beauty, style, and most of all, her versatility as a DJ. From electronica to throwbacks, Flores loves to keep her mixes energetic and high-spirited, and is not afraid to cater to the “mainstream.”

MM: How did you come up with the name FEMME A?

AF: Many people do not know this but my full name is AnnaMarie, but most people call me Annie so when I was deciding on an artist name for myself I wanted something that would define myself as a person and artist combined. I have been out for 10 years so that’s when I thought of using the word “femme” and added the ‘A’ to represent my first name. I had a few other names but I went with Femme A because it has both my first and last initials.

MM: How old are you and where are you from? AF: I’m 31 and I’m from the San Fernando Valley,

which is a suburb north of Los Angeles. I first moved to Palm Springs when I was 22 back in 2005 with a former partner which was almost ten years ago. I moved back to L.A. a few times, but my friends and this beautiful town is what keeps me coming back. It has been three years since I moved back to The Coachella Valley and one of the reasons was to pursue music here and to start gigging around town locally.

MM: When did you get into music? AF: I’ve been infatuated with music since as

long as I can remember, anything melodic caught my attention. My grandpa played the harmonica and my dad was a part time drummer during my childhood. I really got into music and learning about artist that I enjoyed when I was about 12 years old. I had a collection of cassette tapes and I would listen to the radio in order to make my own bootleg mix tapes. If I heard a song I liked I’d run to my boombox and hit record and that tape would last about a month before I’d make another one. In High School it was my CD collection that I was obsessed with!

MM: What music did you listen to growing up?AF: Growing up I’d say I listened to it all, anything

from Biggie to Janet Jackson, Nirvana, Ace of Base, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, No Doubt to Bob Marley… Hip Hop, Alternative, R&B pretty much all the 90’s music I was into. Late High School was 99’ so that was when I was introduced to Electronica Dance Music and the more “underground” scene. When I was 18 l discovered Electro… like Miss Kittin, Felix Da House Cat, Green Velvet and I absolutely fell in love. That lead me to more and more electronica artists who I still enjoy and put in my sets today.

MM: When did you know you wanted to become a DJ?

AF: I remember being on a field trip in Jr High, we went to visit a College Campus and I remember being asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and I just blurted out that I wanted to be a DJ. When I was old enough to “club” that was when I was able to see live DJ’s and was more and more inspired, so deep down I knew then.

MM: When did you become a DJ professionally?AF: I’ve been a DJ and learning the art for a

few years, but I had my first paid gig almost a year and a half ago in 2013. Since then I’m grateful and lucky to say that one gig lead to the next, and next, and next. I’ve worked with clubs, bars with Entertainment Companies and promoters at Boudoir Entertainment, Plab Productions, at Copa Nightclub, Clinic Bar, Alibi’s, The Curve Hotel, weddings and even corporate events like Saks Fifth Ave (Alice & Olivia Day Event), The Palm Springs

Chamber of Commerce & The Desert Aids project. MM: Who are your favorite musical

inspirations? AF: One of my biggest inspirations is Gwen

Stefani, although she is not a DJ I’ve looked up to her as an artist since I was 14 years old. I love her style when she is performing, her attitude is always positive and she always comes off as being grateful in interviews. Miss Kittin is another inspiration and I first heard of her 13 years ago. I love the fact that she is a female DJ, singer and producer. I love her sound -it’s dark electro/ electronica.

MM: I saw you are going to the Arts Institute for music and engineering…what is the ultimate goal?

AF: Yes, I am an Audio Production student at the Art Institute & I initially started with the intent of doing Sound Engineering in major studios but since I’ve been in school I’ve had the opportunity to learn Sound Design for videos and it’s pretty awesome. At this point in my education today, I plan on continuing to obtain my degree and I’m keeping my options open until I’m near the end of my program which will be in 18 months.

MM: What do you think of the music scene in the Coachella Valley?

AF: I love that the music scene out here has grown compared to 9 years ago when I first moved here. Since I’ve started gigging I have met many artists, musicians and DJ’s that I never knew before but I have to say it’s pretty sweet to see that a community of one does exist and I’m excited for what the future brings. I’m proud of my town but I’m still in awe when I think about how there are so many new bars & venues that are open to having local artists showcase their talent and passion.

MM: What makes you different than any other DJ out there?

AF: I think what makes me different is that I don’t stick to just one genre of music when playing to a crowd and I consider myself to be versatile. I love making people happy by giving them energy through music and I’m not afraid to play what I know people like, even if it is “mainstream”.

MM: What is it like being a female DJ in a male dominated profession?

AF: Sometimes I don’t realize it’s an all-male profession but other times it gets interesting, but I have no major complaints.

MM: What kind of mixes do you like to do? What would you describe as your style?

AF: When I create mixes it’s usually include songs that I am really into at that particular moment. Lately they have been very Electronica Dance Music inspired such as Trap, Electro House, Big Room, some House and anything else, funky, that has deep sounding bass and makes you want to dance. I would describe my style of mixes as versatile but EDM influenced.

“For downtown Palm Canyon Drive, we need sponsors for the following fallen heroes: Benjamin F. Ward, Albert James Reaume, Stephen P. Pavel Jr., Vernon M. Troutt, David K. Manson and Russell G. Torres. For the Palm Springs Air Museum, we need sponsors for the following heroes: Albert James Reaume, Leonard Ray Bryant, Pete Nila, Stephen P. Pavel Jr., Vernon M. Troutt, Gary Lee Saxton, and Leveret Roscoe Prosky.”

On Saturday, August 23, local musicians will be turning out in droves to help raise money for this honorable project. Palm Canyon Road House will be hosting bands starting at 2:00 PM. The list of local talent lining up to donate their time to participate has been overwhelming: The Hoochie Coochie Band, Wicked Jed, Clay Christopher, Matt Barnes, Peter Harbur, Jimi Hiel, Mark Fry, Erik Mouness, Ron Anchak, Lou Cope, Kevin Quinn, Richard Lindsey, Paul Vigil,

When former marine and Cathedral City High School teacher Lee Wilson, Jr.

approached the owners of Palm Canyon Road House with his mission, there was no hesitation whatsoever to join him in his cause ~ the fundraising for “Hero Banners” creating a “Walk of Heroes” along Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs and at the Palm Springs Air Museum. The purpose? To honor all local residents of Palm Springs and Palm Springs Unified School District who in time of war gave their lives for our freedom.

“I stopped counting after 100 the number of cities in Southern California that honor those in active duty overseas. The difference here is, we are honoring those who died serving our country during war, some of whose stories were never told due to censorship at the time. The purpose of the project is to honor all local residents of Palm Springs and Palm Springs Unified School District who, in time of war, gave their lives for our freedom. Sponsored by the Palm Springs American Legion, Owen Coffman, Post 519, friends and family of our 27 heroes are invited to leave photos that can be used during patriotic events and to keep as a permanent record in our archives. We especially need photos and information about our World War II, Korea and Vietnam heroes.”

So far the support for the project has been phenomenal, but the goal has yet to be met. “Out of 54 banners total, we only need 13 more sponsors,” shared Wilson.

Stan Joyce, Ed Todd, Chris Sigwald, Kymm Galvan, R Buckle Road members Greg Vincent, Michael Pedersen and Lisa Lynn Morgan, and international reggae recording artist, RASUN and many more. Closing the night is Ethan Vega and 10 Fold at 9pm.

“Proceeds from the August 23rd event will go towards purchasing the hardware to mount the banners at the air museum,” said Wilson. “Roughly, we need around $4,000 to purchase enough brackets to display all the banners. Think about it, people from all over the world visit our air museum! They will see our banners and know we honor our own!” He added, “Cathedral City, a PURPLE HEART CITY, needs sponsors for banners too! Cathedral City will hang banners for the following heroes: Albert James Reaume, Leonard Ray Bryant, Gary Lee Saxton, Ming Sun, and Suresh Abayasekara Krause, all Cathedral City residents. Cathedral City will display banners on HWY 111 in front of City Hall and in Patriot Park, on the corner of Dinah Shore and Date Palm in time for the Healing Fields Flag Ceremonies in November. We need sponsors for Reaume, Bryant and Saxton for Cathedral City.”

Donations can be made during the event, and a petition will also be on hand showing

the City of Palm Springs the public support for the hanging of the banners during select national holidays. People wishing to donate to the Palm Springs Hero Banner project but are unable to attend; please send a check or money order made out to the Palm Springs American Legion Post 519. In the memo portion of the check; please write HERO BANNERS.

thing. Ozzmania does a great job with their tribute to Ozzy and Black Sabbath! When you see them perform your jaw will just drop. I’m so excited to have the guys as part of season 4! This way everyone around the country can tune and see their mind blowing talent 100% live from the Whiskey A Go Go in Hollywood on AXS TV!” Fortunately for those of us here in the Coachella Valley, you can see their jaw altering performance live and in person at Schmidy’s Tavern this Saturday, August 23rd at 9:00 pm.

OZZMANIA consists of Michael Reade, AKA Snozzy Snosbourne as Ozzy, Mark “Metal Mark” Knapp as Zakk, Vince Pacelli on Bass, and Michael Clemens on drums. Newly inducted to the tribute band is Fred Corradi, who with his keyboard stack, brings depth and fullness of sound that takes this already stellar band to galactic levels. The tribute band was formed in 2007 when Mark Knapp and Michael Reade decided to make a change in their music career.

Reade: “We were in original hard rock bands for many years, when we saw the tribute thing really take off. There weren’t many venues for original music at the time. We were playing for 100-200 while people in the tribute bands were playing for 1000-2000. Then one day, we were watching Ozzy’s ‘Live at Budokan’, and Mark and I said to each other, ‘Hey, let’s do this!’ “

CVW: Do you ever get tired of doing the same thing - performing only one artist’s work?

Knapp: Everybody gets tired of doing the same thing, but we always have fun. When I can hear the sound of the crowd bouncing back to me from the drum riser, that’s a

this Saturday night, so will the presence of OZZMANIA. Tapped by “The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands”, AXS TV’s weekly live concert series now in their fourth season, OZZMANIA will take you on a Crazy Train like no other (the exception of course being Ozzy and Black Sabbath themselves, and even that has been debated). Host and executive producer Katie Daryl introduced the all-new lineup of tribute bands this week, and OZZMANIA is one of them. I asked Katie how OZZMANIA, a band stacked with our local Coachella Valley musicians, was selected. She shared, “’The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands’ looks for acts that look and sound just like the real

satisfied crowd. It pumps me up and drives me. It takes me to a whole other level.

Clemens: The big reward is the crowd. To hear 1000-2000 people at HOB singing along louder than us...yeah, that’s the real reward. It’s pretty awesome. It’s all about being the best we can be and giving the fans what they need.

CVW: Do die hard Ozzy/Black Sabbath fans ever get critical in comparing you to the original artist?

Knapp: Fans teach us all the time about Ozzy. There’s seriously A LOT of big Ozzy fans. But they are never critical. In fact, most of our fans tell us we’re better live than Ozzy. I’ve never heard any negativity from the fans.

CVW: What do you think it was that got you selected as “Best Tribute band”?

Knapp: I’m still trying to figure that out.Clemens: Just a lot of hard work actually.

Putting the right guys together, keeping the best chemistry, being passionate about what we do. People have been saying for a while now, ‘Wow! You’re giving Ozzy a run for his money.’”

Knapp: It was actually a two year process, submitting video and information to AXS.

Corradi: The first time I saw Ozzmania I was just absolutely floored. I was familiar to the tribute industry working with ‘Hollywood U2’ so I had an incredible amount of discernment. The best thing about these guys apart from their musicianship is that you can tell these guys really love this music and love what they do. It’s all about the music for these guys.

OZZMANIA embodies the true spirit of the ultimate rock legend. Having played to thousands of people, Ozzmania continues to blaze a trail and fly the flag in honor of the Prince Of Darkness. These four musicians have banded together to become the best and only true showcase of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath music, and the nod from AXS confirms that they have truly succeeded.

The ‘World’s Greatest Tribute Bands’ is broadcast live, nationwide on AXS TV and hosted/produced by Katie Daryl, and celebrates the music from iconic artists in history. The show airs Tuesdays starting Sept 9 at 7pm PT/ 10ET. Ozzmania’s debut will be filmed live at the Whiskey A Go Go Oct 28th. “With several hundred band submissions from across the world, Ozzmania was an obvious pick for the show, they’re so talented- and can ROCK!” ~ Katie Daryl

DIRTJoining OZZMANIA for this show, is the

Alice in Chains tribute band, DIRT. Founder Vince Pacelli, started the tribute in Chicago 1995. What was a unique choice in tributes at the time, performed consistently on a series of tours booked by one of the largest tribute agencies in the world.

Pacelli talked about those early days: “Everybody in the tribute industry was starting to do bands like Metalica, Ozzy, Kiss, ACDC... all the big names you could think of. There must have been 4-6 bands covering the same tribute. We wanted to do something different and cutting edge. We thought Alice and Chains fit that bill even if they were a bit under the radar at the time. There was only one other band in the country doing an AIC tribute, and that was our favorite band. We played anywhere and everywhere. We were honest to God, road warriors, working 4-6 nights a week.” When Pacelli married and relocated to California, the tribute was put to rest, but only for a spell. Today, DIRT consists of Mike Cordero on vocals, Vince Pacelli, guitar and vocals, Aaron Lee on bass and vocals, and Jason Piazza on drums.

These bands are not only a tribute to the artists they embody; they are a tribute to the depth of our valley’s local talent. Every member of OZZMANIA and DIRT are local. For the cost of two cups of coffee, fans can be treated to an incredible sonic and sensory experience in climate controlled tavern with misted patio. It is highly recommended you show up early as nearly 200 people are already expected to show. The first 50 people through the doors will be treated to complimentary Ozzmania swag.

Show Details:Saturday, August 23rd @ 9 PM (Doors open at 8)

Location: Shmidy’s Tavern, Palm Desert (corner of Fred Waring and Hwy 111)

DeAN WArehAM

Dean Wareham has been the driving force behind two influential Post-Punk bands, Galaxie 500 and Luna.

After nearly 30 years in the record business, he has released his self-titled, solo debut.

Dean Wareham was born in Wellington, New Zealand. His family spent time in Sydney, Australia, before relocating to New York City in 1977. Even though the city was in decay, it was the birthplace of American Punk explosion.

Wareham attended Harvard University and connected with drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang. The trio gigged around Boston and New York, recorded demos and released their first album, Today, in 1988, on the tiny Aurora label.

Galaxie 500’s lo-fi psychedelic sound was heavily influenced by 60s/70s touchstones like Velvet Underground and Modern Lovers, as well as Great Britain’s Spacemen 3. Following their debut, two albums, On Fire, and This Is Our Music, appeared in 1989 and 1990, respectively. But just as they were gaining momentum, the band suffered an acrimonious split.

Wareham immediately bounced back, forming the indie “super group” Luna, in 1991, recruiting ex-Feelies drummer, Stanley Demeski and former Chills’ bassist, Jason Harwood. In the band’s early days, Demeski didn’t have his own kit, so he permanently borrowed one from pal, Conan O’Brien.

Wareham had already inked a deal with Elektra Records and Luna’s first album, Lunapark arrived in 1992. The Velvet

By now, Wareham and Britta Phillips had married and recorded an album together: L’Avventura in 2002. It was produced by the legendary Tony Visconti, (David Bowie, T-Rex, Thin Lizzy). After Luna’s demise, the duo reconvened with Visconti in 2007 for Back Numbers.

Wareham has kept a low profile the last few years, touring, composing the score for Noah Baumbach’s film, “The Squid & The Whale” and writing his memoir, “Black Postcards.” Now he returns with his first solo album, produced by My Morning Jacket front man, Jim James.

The album opens with the propulsive chug of “The Dancer Disappears.” The skeleton of the melody recalls the Ronettes’ epochal “Be My Baby. Even though Wareham declares that he’s “now in the twilight of the psychedelic years,” he remains optimistic and engaged. “Bring back the magic and light the match, there’s a spark that I’m hoping to catch.”

The beatific melodies of “My Eyes Are Blue” and “Love Is Not A Roof Against The Rain” belie contemplative lyrics. The former employs circuitous guitar riffs that shimmer and jangle. The instrumentation pivots between tinkling vibes, plucked acoustic guitar and gliding pedal steel. The lyrics sketch out a cagey paean to unconditional love.

The latter is a haunting slice of spatial psychedelia. The tempo is slow and deliberate as Wareham takes emotional inventory…”what have I done with my life,

Underground continued to be a guidepost along with pioneering NYC Punks, Television. Building on the template created by those two iconic bands, Luna expanded their sonic palette.

On their second album, Bewitched, the trio became a quartet with the edition of second guitarist, Sean Eden. The sound became even more expansive, and the line-up lasted through their third album, Penthouse. Rolling Stone declared Penthouse one of the essential albums of the ‘90s. It included a knowing cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Bonnie And Clyde.”

Luna followed up with Pup Tent and Days Of Our Nights in 1997 and 1999, respectively. By 2000, bassist Jason Harwood left and was replaced by Britta Phillips. They recorded a live record, Luna Live, and two more studio albums, Romantica and Rendezvous. But the band called it quits in 2005.

what have I done to deserve this?” Wareham ups the ante on both

“Holding Pattern” and “I Can Only Give My All.” “Holding Pattern” offers a mordant meditation on stasis. Here Wareham equates the monotony of plane travel delays with the tedious AOR music of Kansas, Toto, Boston and Journey. The instrumentation here is anything but dull, blending a stuttering backbeat nimble bass runs and swirling synths. The droning guitar solo sparks and pinwheels, managing to be cyclonic, gritty and pretty all at the same time.

The melody of “I Can Only Give My All” shares musical DNA with Peter, Paul & Mary’s “Where Have All The Flowers Gone.” Anchored by a rigid typewriter rhythm and galloping synths, the guitars are a sonic wall of sound. Shifting between arch tremolo, modal fills and shards of Surf guitar, the riff-age is kaleidoscopic, down to the last fluttery chord.

Wareham is at his most beautiful covering Michael Holland’s “Heartless People.” His vocals are laconic, his tone derisive and misanthropic. But all that is cloaked in the echo and sway of this skewed minor key waltz. A loping meter and lovely arpeggios propel the action, building to a hushed crescendo.

Other interesting tracks include the lush and verdant “Beat The Devil.” Here, instrumentation is powered by a chirping Cicada rhythm, and a ringing 12 string guitar that recalls both the Byrds and Ravi Shankar. “Babes In The Wood” locks into swoony, soporific groove.

The album closes with “Happy & Free.” Once again, Wareham is content to play both cynic and cockeyed optimist. Church chimes, scattered loops and Jim James’ wily banjo runs underscore the lyrical dichotomy.

Wareham is thoroughly supported on this solo endeavor by Jim James on keyboards and electric guitars, Anthony LaMaria on percussion and pedal steel, Kevin Ratterman on sleep drone and Britta Phillips on bass, piano and backing vocals. The album was recorded at Jim James’ home studio in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dean Wareham’s solo debut is almost interchangeable with the entire Luna oeuvre. Sometimes the only way to achieve clear artistic vision is through complete autonomy.

By JaNet McafeePET PLACEElvis sang the “Jailhouse Rock” last

December when he ended up at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, the

local county shelter. While dogs throughout the Valley played with new toys and romped through Christmas wrapping, it was a “Blue Christmas” for this little dog and his cellmates at the pound. The majority of the animals entering California’s public county shelters are euthanized, and Elvis had a close call. In January, the luck of this small Pug/Chihauhua/Dachshund mix changed. Elvis came into Loving All Animals’ Mobile Mutts rescue program. But it still proved to be a long road home for Elvis who holds the unenviable record for the longest time spent in Loving All Animals’ foster to adoption program.

Elvis came faithfully to all adoption events, including fun filled Yappy Hours where he was admired but never adopted. Often one of the husbands would admire this handsome dog with the sable mink looking coat. Then his wife would nix the deal. One of the volunteers complained that Elvis snarled at the bigger dogs and was a problem at events. There was a different report from foster mom Maritza

dog to the right owner is the key to success. First stop was McMahon’s Recreational Vehicle sales office, where the alpha guys were lounging around the sales office on a scorching hot afternoon. Two of the salesmen expressed an interest in Elvis. Mike Hill said he recently visited a couple shelters and was in the market for a dog. Mike, a single guy, explained that he lived in an RV parked on the lot and traveled to RV shows. Mike goes up north for the summer to McMahon’s in Morgan Hill where the cool weather means better sales. I thought to myself, “This is not the ‘kids and white picket fence’ life I imagined for Elvis. What if he gets attacked by coyotes at a campground?” But Elvis had plans of his own. He checked out Mike’s RV and made himself at home. We strolled back to the sales office where the staff admired the little dog who seemed to relish the attention.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT WAS AMAZING. MIKE’S CELL PHONE RANG AND HE SHOWED US THE NAME “ELVIS” APPEARING ON THE PHONE. Turns out it was Mike’s best human friend named Elvis calling. He does Elvis impersonations! Everyone was amazed, and it seemed like an omen that this adoption was ordained. I told Mike that Elvis was a chick magnet, attracting the ladies and getting extra points when they found out he was a rescue dog. Mike couldn’t take Elvis that day, but we set an adoption time for several days later. That afternoon Mike told a co-worker, “My heart is fluttering thinking about that dog. It’s like I’m falling in love for the first time”. Mike called the night he adopted Elvis to report, “This is the best dog I’ve ever had! You were right, he’s a chick magnet. We got lots of attention at PetSmart!” ELVIS IS MIKE’S

“GOOD LUCK CHARM”. In the spirit of “Follow that Dream” Mike

and Elvis hit the road the next morning for an RV show in Victorville. Dogs are traveling animals, and Elvis thrives in his new adventure filled life with Mike. He attended his first barbeque and played happily with a husky dog named Sheeba. Remember this is the dog who didn’t like big dogs! Mike and Elvis are now working at the McMahon’s RV location in Morgan Hill, near San Jose. They are pictured here on the RV lot. Elvis has an area right outside Mike’s glass covered office, and he accompanies Mike whenever he has a customer. Mike says proudly, “I’m the salesman, and Elvis is the closer!”. Elvis is good for business and went on three RV test drives and one house call. Last night two female park rangers dropped by to see Elvis and of course Mike didn’t complain about the attention. This is another reason to get a rescue dog!

Mike tells how much his new pet means to him, “I knew right away Elvis was the dog for me. I like the way he looks with the racing stripe down his back. I like his energy, his playfulness, the way he’s good with people which is important in my business. He’s a great buddy and great companion. I love him. He’s grown on me, I can’t be without him for very long!” Elvis sleeps by Mike’s side at night with a little stuffed lion. Elvis’ new life is different than most dogs. His home is on wheels. Elvis who loves people is rarely alone. Dogs love to perform tasks, and they bring happiness to the humans in the workplace. Elvis waited a long time for the perfect home.

“Are you Lonesome Tonight?” Head over to see hundreds of wonderful adoptable dogs (and cats) at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, the local Riverside County shelter at 72050 Pet Land Place in Thousand Palms, (760) 343-3644. You can also contact Loving All Animals at (760) 776-9397 or www.lovingallanimals.org for information about pet adoption.

Rodriguez, “Elvis is a calm, affectionate, playful dog who loves going to the dog park to play. He’s perfect!” In an ideal world, Elvis would have the continuity of one foster home. But our Valley is filled with snow birds and folks taking mini vacations which meant Elvis was moved to four foster homes. His wonderful foster parents Joy & Dean Jacot, Paul White, Donnamarie Marconi, and Maritza Rodriguez report Elvis was a joy in their homes. Elvis adapted easily to the changes. Lynne Lockwood and I took dogs to the recent Sun City Shadow Hills adoption event, and again Elvis was left behind. I told Lynne, “This is it. I’m going to get Elvis adopted today!”

Elvis was overlooked for the little, white fluffy female dogs preferred by many Valley residents, particularly women. Realizing Elvis’ appeal to “macho” men, I made a list of the likely places to find them. Matching the right

SPeAKING SPANISh tO yOur WINeSHey—it seems that this column has

recently gone on a vacation, as the world is accustomed to do in the

month of August, two weeks ago with our coverage on Sangria in Spain (along with the bottled stuff in the U.S.), and, last week where we partied hearty all over Italy with their traditional dishes and vino. Well, on our way back home, we’re going to figuratively stop over again in Spain to quickly familiarize you with one of the world’s best and reasonably priced wines: Rioja [Ree-‘OH-ha]

Aside from us wine-nerds, few people know precisely what Rioja is all about beyond having something to do with Spanish wine. So before we get down to some serious drinking, it behooves us to become a little more knowledgeable about the wine. And with all of the trendy Spanish/Mediterranean bistros and restaurants blooming around us, you can be well equipped to enjoy a lifetime of drinking fine Rioja.

As mentioned in our Sangria article, Spanish wines have been enjoying growth in the U.S. market, with bottled shipments up by more than half a million cases over the past two years. In 2013, Rioja’s shipments to the U.S. jumped 18% to the equivalent of about 1.1 million cases, increasing its presence by nearly three-quarters since 2009.

Rioja is both a wine area and wine; kinda like “Burgundy”—an area in France, and, a French wine. And as in both of these examples, the area is varied and the wines differ depending where in that area the grapes are grown.

Most people associate Rioja with red wine, and a good 85% of the wine from the region is indeed tinto. Reds consist of a mixture of grapes, including the most commonly found varietal, Tempranillo, along with some others: Graciano, Mazuelo or Garnacha Tinta. If you pull away anything from this discussion: Red Rioja wine comes primarily from the Tempranillo grape. For you Spanish speakers, you already have a clue as the grape’s predominant characteristic: “temprano” means early, and the Tempranillo grape is one of the earliest grapes around to ripen and harvest.

I remember when Trader Joe’s markets opened in the early ‘80s, and sold this unfamiliar red wine with a label written in Spanish and a bottle wrapped in a thin wire mesh arrangement. It sold for $2 a bottle and I surely tried it. I was more than pleasantly surprised at the taste and quality of the wine—like a baby Bordeaux. By the way, that strange wire mesh packaging was utilized early on to foil wine counterfeiters; and for tradition sake, Marques de Riscal Rioja and some other Riojas still wire wrap their bottles—and so does Francis Coppola with his California wines!—always the decorative showman, huh?

When you first taste a Spanish Tempranillo/Red Rioja you’ll get hit with the flavor of leather

with a sweet-heavy sauce—the Campo Viejo surely wasn’t going to match the flavor of the prepared chicken, but it would certainly be a refreshing cleansing wine with appealing back-up fruit to give the meal a bit more style.

The traditional deal with Rioja was that the Spanish really aged their wine in the barrels so when it was bottled, you could fully enjoy the wine immediately. In 1988, I purchased a case of the famed 1976 La Rioja Alta that had just been released! Fortunately for me, but sadly for the producer, the entire case cost me around $140—that means each bottle was less than $12!

The wine was magnificent. Polished but with sway, the flavors a sexy and focused melodious mix of bright cherry, orange peel, cedar, mineral, and licorice. These are the finds that make a wine lover’s day (week/month!).

along with cherries, plums, tobacco, vanilla and clove. The finish is mild, smooth and lingers with light tannins throughout. It’s medium-bodied like a balanced Pinot Noir—which means it’s really food friendly. Another way of describing the flavor is to imagine a Chianti mixing it up with a Cabernet Sauvignon.

As the wine steward at Pavilions, I recommended the very inexpensive ($8) Campo Viejo Rioja to a young lady who wanted something different than a Zinfandel to go with her BBQ chicken; and she was willing to go out of her wine comfort zone to try something new. She said, “Thanks!” grabbed the bottle and scooted right off. I hadn’t tried the Campo lately, but I knew it was a good entry-level Rioja. However, I wondered if her chicken was going to be lathered in heavy barbeque sauce for which an Argentinean Malbec would have been the better selection, or was she simply “grilling” her chicken, which is a classic Rioja pairing.

Ok-Ok—I finally cracked open a bottle, since she hadn’t come back with a yea or nay. So it goes—the stressful life of a wine steward. So after a good quaff—and you know, even

FYI—old style Rioja designations are still used by many producers: Crianza: require 2 years, with 6 months in oak; Reserva: are aged 3 years with 1 year in oak and are a big step up in quality which have rich, round flavor because of the minimum oak requirement—seek these out as they are great buys; and, Gran Reserva wines are from phenomenal vintages, aged a minimum of 5 years before release. Most producers will do 20-30 months in barrel.

CVNE, whose Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year for 2013, was recently served by the bottle at Catalan Mediterranean Restaurant in Rancho Mirage. When they re-open on September 3rd, let’s see if they still have some bottles available; and please feel free to invite me over.

Hasta muy pronto!

talking to guests and locals about what they wanted in an eatery and his own desire to bring Simon’s take on farm-to-fork dining to the desert.

There aren’t a lot of changes being made to Sessions space, which is already a pretty nice dining spot that’s exudes a rock vibe with the sensibility of a contemporary dining spot. “It’s pretty much the perfect spot for a three-meal-a-day dining space,” Carpiac said. “But we will be making some changes to fit (Simon’s) specifications.”

“Palm Springs is hot right now,” Simon has said of the new addition to his eateries in Chicago, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. “I’m very excited to be a part of this laid-back, hipster getaway. The menu that I’ve developed for Simon Kitchen + Bar is a little edgy, a little fun, and full of contemporary takes on the comfort foods we all love.”

For Simon’s business partner since 2013 and CEO of Simon Hospitality Group, Cory Harwell is just as excited as Carpiac to break into the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs dining scene. And until the new space opens to the public in mid-September, he’s spending Wednesday through Sunday of each week overseeing the renovation of the space, hiring the executive chef and working on menus for Simon Kitchen + Bar, which is Simon’s third Hard Rock partnership.

“I love the fact that Andy has done his due diligence in finding out what his guests and the locals are looking for in a restaurant,” he said of Carpiac’s year of talking to guest and locals about what they wanted in the hotel’s restaurant and what type of food they would find both comforting and exciting at the same time. “We know that Palm Springs locals are hungry for a restaurant that’s fun and different at the same time.”

Simon and Harwell have planned each of the group’s restaurants to not only fit the area where they’re located, but by also using local vendors, adjusting menus to meet the availability of product and produce from local growers and hiring local talent to staff the kitchen and front of house.

What they’re looking for, he said, is someone with the same passion for food as the Iron Chef who is battling Multiple-system atrophy (MSA), an aggressive form of Parkinson’s disease. “I am inspired every

Most hotel owners plan everything down to the most minute detail when they open a new property,

especially when it’s one that’s associated with an established brand like the Hard Rock.

Dining options are often planned to make sure that target guests of the property will stay put for most meals, thereby adding to the bottom-line on the bill.

For Andy Carpiac, the Hard Rock’s majority owner, that wasn’t quite the business plan he had in mind when planning for the hotel that is becoming one of the anchors of the city’s downtown business district.

Sessions restaurant, a hip and upscale three-meal a day dining spot with local chef Aaron Kiefer was there for guests and locals dining pleasure on opening day, but “I really started talking to Chef Simon before we opened the doors,” Carpiac said recently from his office in L.A. Those early talks came a little late in the game for the actual opening of the hotel, Carpiac kept the lines of communication open hoping to bring Simon aboard to broaden the appeal of the hotel’s kitchen.

With a goal of integrating the Hard

Rock as not just a leader in the city’s hotel/resort scene, Carpiac has always wanted the Hard Rock to be a place that locals felt comfortable, whether it was being part of events like the recent Splash House parties or as a hangout at the nightclub.

For most large hotels, unless it’s for a big event, getting locals into the hotel restaurant is often difficult. And so he used knowledge he’d gained his involvement in other Palm Springs resorts like the Colony Palms Hotel,

day by Kerry,” Harwell said. “His passion for food, for developing new recipes has not diminished and that’s what we want in the chefs we choose to work in our kitchens.”

Simon Kitchen + Bar will follow the same model as Simon’s other restaurants in offering social plates (shared plates, “our favorite way of eating,” Harwell added), entrees, sandwiches and outrageous desserts.

One of the menu highlights will be an Iron Chef burger from the man who killed Chef Cat Cora in a burger challenge on “Iron Chef” in 2005. Other items include Devil’s Eggs, decadent eggs with crispy pancetta and caviar, black rice and oxtail risotto with a parmesan cream and a bourbon fudge brownie served with brown butter bacon ice cream.

Hopefully the menu (which should be released shortly, along with the name of the new executive chef) will also include short rib sliders with root beer glaze; grilled cheese with apple slices and caramelized onion; cocoa-espresso New York strip steak with red wine demi; and duck confit made with black mission figs and gorgonzola cheese, that are on the menu at other Simon eateries.

“We make about 95 percent of everything that’s served in the restaurant in our kitchen,” Harwell said. “It’s the only way to develop the depth of flavor and the bold in-your-face combinations that Kerry is known for.”

friendly and interested Winters. At the time of our meeting, Williams was on the brink of stardom but not yet famous for TV’s “Mork & Mindy.” The first thing Williams said to me was, “Oh no, another Robin.” I liked that we shared an uncommon first name for a male. At the time, I was a new dad and had my young son was sleeping in my arms during our meeting. Williams liked that. I found Williams to be humble, smart and focused. He was very upbeat and certainly not manic and constantly “on” as others have claimed. I couldn’t imagine a better person to portray Winters’ literally hysterical breakdown. Looking back, knowing what we know now, I imagine Williams would have been magnificent portraying Winters’ special brand of madness. Williams was interested if a deal could be brokered and he and Winters liked the screenplay. Well, no deal was brokered and no screenplay was written. When I met with Winters, he was friendly and interested, but seemed reluctant to let go of the manuscript. Maybe it was just too private. (The project remains dormant and, as far as I know, the manuscript is still unread by anyone outside Winters’ family, if even by them.) It’s a movie that exists only in my head now. Hard to imagine who could play a young, crazed Winters besides a young, desperately sane, Williams.

When I heard of Robin Williams passing, I remember the story of the sad clown who could bring joy to others but lived under a dark cloud. Maybe that’s what gave him the insight for his unique routines? Somewhere it’s written: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Much will be written about Williams, but in the end, no one knows how dark it can get. He should not be derided for being selfish in his demise, but remembered for the insight he gave into the pain and joy embedded in our collective human experience. For me, Robin Williams was a far more gifted dramatic actor than manic comic. If there’s one movie to see for it’s uncanny relevance to William’s sad and untimely death, it’s 2009’s WORLD’S

As I write this, the news of Robin Williams’ suicide is just breaking. When you read this days later,

there will no doubt have been reams of newspaper and magazine headlines and cover stories as well as massive amounts of social media analysis that includes tributes, memories, love and -- naturally, hate.

There’s a story about a man visiting New York in the 1930s. He was well-to-do and profoundly depressed. He was able to get an immediate appointment with the most famous psychiatrist in the city. The man told the shrink he had no reason to continue living and that nothing gave him pleasure. “As a last resort, I am coming to you.” The doctor said, “I have a ticket to the circus that’s in town. The highlight of the show features a famous European clown who can make anyone forget his troubles. If this brilliant performer does not make you laugh, you might as well kill yourself. See the show tonight and get back to me tomorrow.” The doc handed the man the ticket. The visiting patient handed it back. “I am that clown,” he said as he left.

I didn’t know Robin Williams, but I did meet him once in a private setting. There was a project I wanted to develop for him based on Jonathan Winters’ unpublished memoire of his psychotic breakdown and stay in an “asylum.” The manuscript, unread by me, was said to be wildly funny, frightening and profoundly poignant. I later met with a

GREATEST DAD, writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait’s uber dark comedy about suicide. But there’s a sound I hear beyond the weeping. Like crashing waves, it ripples endlessly. It’s laughter from the countless millions of laugh-out-loud moments that Williams triggered – and continues to generate -- all over the world. That alone is the rare and worthy legacy that will remain for a long time to come. It’s a reason to be.

NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER:

Y TU MAMA TAMBIÉNAlfonso Cuarón, the Mexican-born,

American-based filmmaker who gave us the visually groundbreaking GRAVITY, directed this stylishly raunchy but emotionally meaningful road movie about Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna), two upper-class pals who, while their girlfriends are away, decide to spend the summer drinking, drugging and screwing. At a wedding, they meet Luisa (Maribel Verdú), the playful wife of Tenoch’s cousin. The boys convince her to join them on a trip to a made-up beach they call “Heaven’s Mouth” they claim is in Oaxaca. Surprisingly she agrees, hoping to get a break from her own troubles. Not surprisingly, within 48 hours this love triangle -- Luisia’s already had sex with Tenoch and Julio -- explodes and threatens to destroy any vestiges of the friendship the young men had with each other and with her.

This hugely acclaimed filmed is now available in a pristine, director approved special edition package that includes both a BD and DVD along with cornucopia of fascinating extras. Along with commentaries, deleted scenes, making-of, behind the scenes, a short film by Alfonso’s son Carlos there’s an interview with philosopher Slavoj Žižek who once famously said: “Cinema is the ultimate pervert art. It doesn’t give you what you desire - it tells you how to desire.” This is one for the library. Criterion. Blu-ray/DVD combo.

THE QUIET ONES

Critics and audiences were divided about this atmospheric, psychologically unsettling account of an incident set in an estate near London in which Professor Coupland and some of his students experiment on a young woman who harbors some deep and unspeakably dark secrets. Who would’ve guessed? I like horror films that do not depend on gore alone for their jolts and this one had a few moments that really got my attention. John Pogue directs this disturbing tale allegedly based on “real incidents.” Hammer/Lionsgate. DVD.

The world is going crazy. Relationships between United States’ allies and enemies appear

to be getting more intense and unpleasant. It is hard for regular citizens to know just what governments are doing behind the scenes to keep the peace. If indeed that is the goal. In Jason Matthew’s novel Red Sparrow (Scribner, 435 pages), Russian and American spies try to get the upper hand in an endless game of spy craft.

The story begins in the side streets of Moscow as CIA case officer Nathaniel Nash works the area to flush out and lose Russian surveillance teams in order to safely meet his high level “asset,” Marble – a foreign intelligence officer and Kremlin spy. After a short exchange, Marble and Nate are spotted and pursued. They barely get away in the cold dark city.

The Russian and American spy teams are both pissed at the close encounter. The Russians know they have an insider -- a mole -- and they nearly had him in their grasp. They know about the American handler, Nate, and desperately want his ass as well.

Meanwhile, the Americans reprimand Nate for the near loss of their most important and longest standing Russian agent. With Nate’s cover blown, he is at

To find out who the Russian traitor is, Dominika is assigned to recruit and seduce Nate. The two meet in Helsinki, each working the other. Abused, used and disrespected by her Russian compatriots, Dominika comes to appreciate the straightforward relationship she builds with Nate. They soon become friends and she decides to work for the Americans as a double agent.

Inevitably, Nate and Dominika become lovers, which only complicates matters. In the meantime, Marble wants out of the spy biz. He’s old and tired and knows his days are numbered. With the CIA’s help, Marble plans his own demise so Dominika can take his place as a high-ranking Russian insider devoid of suspicion.

While in the field, Dominika has made a name for herself at the Kremlin. Even President Putin knows about her loyalty and good work. After a miss-step, the Russians torture Dominika for weeks in a vain attempt to get her to confess. She survives the brutality at the hand of her own people, but now she hates those in power more than ever.

At the same time, both countries search for high-level spies within their borders. Eventually, everything comes to a head and a dangerous plan is devised. Each party -- Russian and American -- must make a sacrifice to get what they want. For Dominika and Nate, both loyal citizens of their respective countries, their work – the art of spy craft -- is personal and they will do whatever it takes to maintain their integrity.

Red Sparrow is a spy thriller that engages the reader with both American and Russian espionage. Author Matthews reveals the spying similarities and differences between Russia and America. The romantic relationship between Nate and Dominika entangles their personal lives and belief systems making the novel a compelling tale of just what goes on in the intense and complicated world of intelligence gathering.

Matthews is a retired veteran of the CIA. Both he and his wife had careers in the spy business and raised their children overseas. (Read more about Matthews in my article at www.coachellavalleyweekly.com Columns, Book Review Lunch With A Spy Mar. 26 ‘14.) His omniscient voice in the novel reeks of insider knowledge.

Most interesting is the close up look at Putin’s Russia. Red Sparrow features Putin

as a character, and yes he is that same soulless guy we see on TV posing shirtless. Putin is a man who sends sadistic hit men to kill those who would embarrass him and his administration. He is especially feared and hated by those who work with him. Putin is ruthless, egotistical and dangerous. As with most tyrannical governments, we root for the people and detest their authoritarian leadership.

This is Matthews’ first novel and he writes like a pro! He moves the story along and weaves a provocative tale hopping between a Russian and American point of view. This book is a trip to Moscow, Helsinki, Greece and Rome. In every chapter, someone is eating at a local restaurant where the reader gets a taste of the food. (Matthews even includes a brief recipe at the end of every chapter.) He uses humor and action to engage the reader without over writing or under telling. He skillfully drops us into a grimy and intense world. Like a good case officer should, and as an author, he connects the dots and ties up all the loose ends.

Dominika is a complicated character. She can read auras. She loves her country and loathes corruption. She wants respect and freedom for herself and her people. As a double agent, she faces certain death if caught. The question is: Can working with the Americans help her and her country?

Red Sparrow is entertaining as well as insightful and timely. Matthews has hinted that Dominika may continue in a sequel. It would be a shame not to see how this difficult relationship with the West will work for her. After all world peace is at stake.

Jason Matthews will be speaking at the Rancho Mirage Writers Festival in January.

risk and must be reassigned. It is a career setback for Nate.

As the Russians decide how to uncover the mole, they recruit Dominika Egorova a beautiful new spy academy graduate. The young woman was top in her class. She also trained as a Sparrow – one who is accomplished in the art of sexual seduction. Dominika comes from a good family with important government ties. She was a ballerina before her top competitor deliberately broke her leg thus destroying any hope of a career.

Dale Gribow has been “Rated” TOP LAWYER for DUI’s by Palm Springs Life Magazine from 2011-2015 and has a Superb AVVO Legal Rating by his fellow attorneys. Dale Gribow has been Man of the Year 7 times including the City of Palm Desert and the City of Hope and Dale Gribow Day has been declared 4 times. He is the only attorney appointed in December 2013 to the Coachella Valley Association of Government’s Public Safety Ad Hoc Blue Ribbon Committee addressing Drunk Driving. This group consists of the police chiefs from every city and the mayor of each city as well as the Sheriff of Riverside County and the head of the CHP and Border Patrol. In addition Gribow is the only attorney asked to be part of the Clinton Foundation’s Clinton Health Matters Committee addressing Drunk Driving. Gribow is also one of the founders of Shutdown Drunk Driving formed upon the death of his client who was recently killed by a drunk driver while jogging.

First of all Do Not Talk to Anyone Other Than Your Lawyer! Law enforcement officers and DA’s are not your friends no matter what they tell you. They are just doing their job and trying to make a case against you. So if you are arrested do yourself a favor and DO NOT TALK TO ANYONE AND CALL YOUR LAWYER. In that regard when I had a Radio Talk Show on the law I would suggest that People Don’t Plan to Fail, They Fail to Plan. Sooo plan now on who you would call if you are arrested or get in an accident. When that happens you are in shock and will not make an intelligent decision. Put that number down in your wallet and computer and keep it by your phone.

Over the next few weeks with the “drinking season coming upon us I will prepare a multipart review on Drunk Driving Laws.

The bottom line: DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE, CALL A TAXI. IT IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME.

celebrations. This could include Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, the Baseball World Series, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Sometimes there seems to be nonstop arrests from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve because our neighbors have been partying at homes and offices. So, yes there are spikes in the types of cases at different times of the year.

We are coming up on Labor Day, World Series and Holiday Parties so with over 30 years of experience I know there will be a lot of our readers who will get stopped and arrested for a DUI. The trick is not to read this column but to understand the simple suggestions herein. If you are stopped for a DUI the Breath Test at the Scene and Field Sobriety Tests are optional. I would suggest explaining to the officer that stops you that your lawyer has advised these things are optional. If he is correct you “Elect not to take the breath test at the scene and the FST’s.” Then show you want to cooperate and ask for the Blood Test. If you stopped drinking some time ago this Blood test will take time to accomplish. On the other hand if you just finished drinking then the alcohol is not yet in your system and a Breath Test at the station would be better.

I am often asked if areas of law are cyclical. To some extent that does take place. For instance, during November

and December people do not want to file for a divorce which would ruin the holidays for the family. When the population of the desert explodes during “season” there are more cars on the road and thus a greater likelihood of accidents. This also takes place when we have rain and the roads are slick. Likewise with more people in town there are more “business deals” being consummated. From Springtime to September people are planning to move into the desert with their families and they scrounge around to find homes in time for the start of the school year. They thankfully retain lawyers to review the paperwork for their home purchases or business deals. Of course, our music concerts like Coachella and Stage Coach bring out the Drug, DUI and False ID cases.

With respect to Drunk Driving’s, whenever there is more drinking and partying the DUI arrests go up. We have more checkpoints and many people are stopped and arrested for a DUI, Driving on a Suspended License and Drunk in Public. During the summer many people drink more than normal to quench their thirst. However the big spike in arrests for DUI’s will occur during holiday

psychotherapy and psychosocial rehabilitation are the most effective forms of treatment. Pharmacotherapy is the use of drugs in the treatment of disorders. Psychotherapy is essentially talk therapy while psychosocial rehabilitation finds ways to reintroduce the mentally ill person back into society in a manner that affords the effective person maximum independent functionality.

The problem of untreated mental illness treatment is highest amongst people who are 60 years of age or older. Only about 7% of these Americans receive some form of psychiatric service while it is estimated that at least 25% of these older Americans need help.

One of the primary reasons for a failure to treat such illnesses is the way that healthcare is delivered to many. It falls upon a primary care physician to spot mental health problems to then convince the

patient or their loved ones that treatment is needed. Given that many mental healthcare treatments are not supported by healthcare plans, treatment is less likely for those on fixed or limited incomes. Additionally, the stigma associated with receiving mental healthcare tends to cause many people to ‘tough it out’ and try to deal with their mental health issues unassisted.

Treat your mental health that that of those around you like a physical or eye exam. See a specialist at least annually for a personal mental health assessment. You may not realize how much of a difference this could make in your life or those of people you care for.

The loss of Robin Williams last week brought a new spotlight to the issue of mental health.

It is estimated that 30,000 Americans take their lives in this manner annually with more than half occurring amongst men between the ages of 25 and 65. Nearly 4.5 million Americans have survived a suicide attempt. The strongest risk factor amongst all who go down this dark path is depression. Along with Robin Williams, 16 million Americans currently suffer. Another high risk factor is prior substance abuse - a condition Williams had lived with for decades. Given that Robin Williams had some financial problems, career setbacks and the recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease he was at a substantially heightened risk of suicide.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five Americans suffer a mental illness with 22% being women and 15% being men. This excludes Americans suffering from alcohol or drug abuse. The Center for Disease Control believes that one in four Americans suffer from mental illness with half of all people experiencing a mental health episode at least once during their lives. Amongst children, 46% are expected to experience a

mental health issue at some point in their lives with 21% expected to have a severe disorder that will inhibit their life’s function.

The World Health Organization has reported that four of the top ten causes of disability in the United States relate to mental illness. Globally, mental health issues are the leading disability ahead of diseases like cancer and heart disease. Within five years, it is expected the major depressive illnesses will be the leading cause of disability for women and children worldwide.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that untreated mental illness costs the economy $100-200 billion annually. Untreated illness can cause unemployment, homelessness, incarceration, substance abuse, and suicide.

Anxiety disorders are the most common disorders striking Americans. In any given year, 18% of Americans suffer an anxiety disorder with women 60% more likely than men. Only one-third of those suffering receive any form of treatment.

States with the highest level of depression are typically states in the south like Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas while many of the northern states like Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota have the lowest levels of mental illness.

Early diagnosis is one of the most effective ways to treat the illness. Pharmacotherapy,

Last week we received a lesson in “Back to School Safety Tips and Driving in School Zones.” I’d prefer to write

something more timely this week like Brush Fire Awareness, Drought and Your Health or some other safety topic but if report cards were issued this week, many people would be receiving an “F” in Safety and an “A” in Selfishness says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.

As I drove, I witnessed people in and near school zones drifting into others lanes as they text, rolling into crosswalks where kids were crossing, running red lights and speeding. Concerned about those school “bullies” I observed several “bully drivers” who speed up and push on others while tailgating, only to rush around the person (who is obeying traffic conditions), and give ‘stink eye’ or another gesture, then stop at the next signal, only to sit as it turned green as they selfishly look at their cell phone. Nothing more but being completely Selfish!

There’s not a person reading this that has not observed what I’m talking about or have participated in receiving these grades if issued a report card. We expect a lot out of our kids when they go to school. We expect

this year with 128,000 needing hospitalization and 3,000 dying. Nearly two in five cases of food poisoning come from dining out.

Ricardo Cano of The Desert Sun recently did a multi-part story on the cleanliness of Coachella Valley restaurants and food preparation facilities. During the two year period ending June 2014, the Department of Environmental Health inspected 1,865 food businesses with 151 not passing inspection. Seventeen of the local restaurants inspected permanently closed with six businesses that are still operating after failing three or more inspections.

ShareKitchen is proud to share with you that we consistently receive a perfect score of 100/A on our inspections and received a Certificate of Recognition by the Department of Environmental Health for having exemplary food safety standards. Food safety and sanitation is critical to keeping our community and families healthy. This means storing foods at cold enough temperatures to prevent the development of bacteria and germs that can lead to norovirus (food

ShareKitchen offers ServSafe Food Manager Certification training once a month at our location in Cathedral City. ServSafe is an extended safety and sanitation training program by the National Restaurant Association. All food service businesses, including places you might not think like convenience stores, are required to have at least one Certified Food Manager on site. This person is responsible for the overall safety and sanitation of the food facility. The program at ShareKitchen is a four hour course followed by a two hour exam. By any chance you’re in the mood for some rugged dive bar action, check out Murray’s Saloon. It is Big Bear’s equivalent to our prized Red Barn but with food and….dare I say it…Karaoke (www.murrayssaloon.com).

After all that activity, food and mountain high highs, it’s time to rest. There are a myriad of places to stay on the mountain. Renting a cabin is optimal, but if you haven’t had time to do so, you can check in at several spots including the North Woods Resort Hotel in the Village (www.northwoodsresort.com) or if you want to wake up with the sound of water lapping at your window try the Marina Riviera on the lake (www.marinaresort.com).

As the summer temperatures in the desert stay steady in the mid 100’s, why not take a quick jaunt up the mountain to Big Bear where you can feel the crisp cool air with about a 30 degree difference. It is a refreshing and vastly different environment from our desert valley floor, as well as a close and convenient getaway, making it a perfect summer desert heat escape.

For more information visit www.bigbearchamber.com .

One of the great things about living in the desert is our close proximity to the beach and mountains.

Within less than a couple of hours we can be beachside playing in the surf, or mountain high, enjoying sprawling forests and breath taking altitude. The go to desert mountain playground is none other than the relaxing and quaint destination of Big Bear. Just a twisty mountain road away sits this perfectly accessible getaway, and with seriously cooler weather, it is a great summer desert heat escape.

It may be an arduous trek, but actually the road to this mountain retreat is quite accessible. The best way from our Coachella Valley to the mountain top of Big Bear is via Yucca Valley through Old Woman’s Springs Road. It is a long and freakishly lonely road….but the driving effort will eventually bring you to a mountain getaway, far removed from the deserts unforgiving summer heat.

At 7,000 ft, Big Bear is a haven of mountain extreme fun for every season. Summertime amusement is everywhere on the mountain, whether if you’re looking for a relaxing respite where you can read lakeside, or ride the inviting waves of the lake...Big Bear is there to help you achieve your vacation goals.

The activities that are available on the mountain are endless. The lake provides many activities from fishing to water skiing. If you are a land lover, try the popular sport of hiking or mountain biking. The mountain’s Snow Summit provides summertime chair lifts where the brave can go hiking or mountain biking on the terrain of Big Bear. The village offers the other sport of shopping. You can visit cozy village shops such as ReJoyce boutique, or shop early for all of your Stagecoach needs at Cowboy Fancy.

After your vigorous activity, it may be time to unwind at one of the mountains best eateries. The best place to go if you’re looking for some beef to beef up your strength for the next day’s action is Captain Anchorage. The restaurant, which was built back in 1946, has a very haunting history…however the steaks and prime rib are modern in their succulence and flavor, known to be the best on the mountain (www.captiananchorage.com).

Another Bear Mountain favorite is the Peppercorn Grille in the village. The locals’ favorite highlights specials such as Artichoke Ala Romana and excellent hand crafted pizzas. The Peppercorns Swiss chalet style offers an intimate and classy setting for mountain visitors (www.peppercorngrille.com).

There’s the Millionaire Matchmaker, Tough Love, The Bachelor and The Bachelorette and other mind-

numbing shows that make your brain bleed faster than water flowing over Niagara. Yet the goal of those shows is to find compatibility between for the sake of entertainment.

Well, in my opinion, there is no better entertainment than the NFL and I’m here to help you discover the NFL franchise you’re most compatible with.

Consider me your NFL Matchmaker. There are 32 teams in the league and while I’ll be offering general guidelines, this is a highly personal choice and one that requires dutiful consideration. If you need more assistance, please tweet at me, @Julie_Buehler or find me on Facebook: Julie.Buehler.

I’m here to help. The NFL is a symphony of strategy and

weekly crescendo of collisions and while everyone knows who their favorite band is or what kind of music populates the iPod, many would-be football fans consider the NFL white noise each Sunday.

Well, if you’re looking to get in the game and provide some meaning to the weekly ritual, adopt a team, and stick with them. And as is the case with your favorite band, not every record will be a hit, but when your team strikes the right chord, it’s simply music to your ears.

If your favorite music is classical music, you’re an old soul and should consider the San Francisco 49ers or Pittsburgh Steelers. They have an old-school head coach, new school infusion of talent, but transport you to another era with their hard-fought style of play. Also consider: Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams.

Maybe Rock and Roll is more your style. Then the Chicago Bears or Oakland Raiders, could be your team. These teams can be as maddening as they are entertaining, and you never know if you’ll be singing your heart out or wanting to smash a guitar. Also consider: Dolphins, Titans.

If you’re a StageCoach loyalist and country fan, you should check out the Indianapolis Colts or Green Bay Packers.

Their quarterbacks grow neck beards and are the type of guys you’d like to have a beer with. Also consider: Vikings, Patriots, Ravens (the QBs don’t necessarily sport a neck beard, but they’re All-American images help and the teams are consistent, and in the case of the Vikings, like country music, generally depressing).

If you’re rocking out to Top 40 or the latest hits, clue into the Denver Broncos, or Seattle Seahawks. They’re fun to watch, have high-octane offenses or high-octane personalities, but will always keep you entertained. Also consider: New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons.

If you like music that’s off the beaten path, if you’re into Folk or Indie Rock, a team like the Kansas City Chiefs or Arizona Cardinals could be interesting to you. They have coaches and history and are NOT teams with large band-wagoning contingents. Also consider: Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Jacksonville Jags

Perhaps Hip Hop gets you going, then the Cincinatti Bengals or Philadelphia Eagles are your team. They have an edge, and they also have a lot of underrated talent, but plenty of swagger. Also consider: New York Jets, Tampa Bay Bucs, Houston Texans.

And lastly, if you can’t get enough of the blues, I direct you to the Dallas Cowboys or San Diego Chargers. Enough said. Also consider Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions.

So even if you’ve never watched NFL football before, given the type of artists you find on your iPod, this should help direct you to the team that will be music to your ears.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): An American named Kevin Shelley accomplished a feat worthy of inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. While wearing a blue satin martial arts outfit, he smashed 46 wooden toilet seats over his head in just one minute. Some observers may be inclined to dismiss his efforts as frivolous and ridiculous. But I admire how he playfully mocked his own competitiveness while fully expressing his competitiveness. He satirized his ego’s drive to be first and best even as achieved the goal of being first and best. I recommend you try something similar. You’re entering a phase when you’ll be wise to add a bit of humility to your bold self-presentation.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are about to make the transition from plodding to skipping; from moping to exulting. You will no longer be bogged down by cloudy doubt, but will instead be buoyed by giddy hope. To what do we owe this imminent turnaround in your fortunes? One reason is that it’s Justifiable Narcissism Week -- for Tauruses only. During this jubilee, the Free Will Astrology Council on Extreme Self-Esteem authorizes you to engage in unabashed self-worship -- and to corral a host of other people who want to join in celebrating you, praising you, and helping you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): An eagle does not catch flies. A lion won’t hunt for mice. A gourmet chef shuns recipes that call for canned soup and potato chips. And I trust that you won’t indulge a hankering for non-nutritious sweets and treats that would spoil your appetite for more robust sustenance. You understand I’m not just talking about your literal eating habits, right? Interpret this oracle metaphorically, please.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now is an excellent time to phase out fantasies that bog you down or drag you backward. Are you up for that challenge? Can you summon the courage to leave the mediocre past behind? If so, here are your assignments: Wean yourself of longings to reconstruct bygone pleasures. Forget about trying to be like the person you used to be and to have the keys you used to have. Stop feeding the feelings that keep you affixed to obsolete goals. Break any taboo that makes you scared to change what needs to be changed.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The artist Amedeo Modigliani lived in Paris from 1906 until his death in 1920. For most of that time, he was destitute. Proprietors of local stores and restaurants sometimes accepted his art work as payment in lieu of actual money. They didn’t necessarily appreciate it, though. One food seller used Modigliani’s drawings as wraps for the fried potatoes he sold. Another stashed the artist’s paintings in his cellar, where they turned into feasts for rodents. Too bad for these short-sighted people and their heirs: The worth of Modigliani’s works eventually increased, and some sold for millions of dollars. In the weeks ahead, Leo, don’t be like those food sellers. Know the value of what you have, even if it’s still latent.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I’ve got three new vocabulary words for you. I need them to provide you with the proper oracle. First is the German term Schwellenangst. It refers to timidity or nervousness about crossing a threshold and heading into unknown territory. The second word is a new English term, “strikhedonia.” It means the joy that rises up when you feel the courage to say “to hell with it.” The third word is from Portuguese: desenrascanço. It means the spontaneous improvisation of haphazard but ultimately effective plans. Now let’s put them all together: To conquer your Schwellenangst, you must summon a bolt of strikhedonia and have faith in your ability to carry out desenrascanço. (Thanks to other-wordly.tumblr.com for the new words.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Desire can conquer fear. Love trumps cowardice. The power that your tenderness affords you may not completely dissolve your doubt and worry, but it will quiet them down so much that they will lose their ability

to paralyze you. These truths are always good to keep in mind, of course, but they are especially useful to you right now. No obstacle will faze you, no shadow will intimidate you, as long as you feed your holy longing and unshakable compassion.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): On August 2, 1830, Louis Antoine, Duke of Angoulême, was King of France for 20 minutes. (It’s a long story.) I offer this to you as a cautionary tale. A few weeks from now, I don’t want to have to be comparing you to him. If you hope to hold your new position or continue to wield your added clout for longer than just a little while, you should take all necessary steps. How? Nurture the web of support that will sustain you, for example. Don’t burn a single bridge. Cultivate real empathy, not just the showy kind. Avoid manipulative behavior, even if you think you can get away with it. Be a skillful gatherer of information.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Golda Meir was Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. Her admirers described her as “strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people.” She had a good sense of humor, too. “Let me tell you the one thing I have against Moses,” she said. “He took us forty years into the desert in order to bring us to the one place in the Middle East that has no oil.” I bring this up as a teaching story for you, Sagittarius. If you plan to make any big moves, transitions, or journeys in the coming months, I suggest you choose destinations that will allow you to gain access to wealth-building resources.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Do you know what phase of your cycle it is? Here are a few hints. It doesn’t come around often. It’s not characterized by predictable events or boring certainties. And it may allow you, even encourage you, to take a break from being your usual self. Give up? OK. I’ll tell you. You have entered the Nicholas Cage Phase of your cycle. Cage is a Capricorn, but not a typical one. He’s eccentric and manic and certifiably batty. He refers to his acting technique as “Nouveau Shamanic,” once lived in a fake castle, and owns a Lamborghini that belonged to the legendary tyrant, the Shah of Iran. For our current purposes, he has also testified, “I am not a demon. I am a lizard, a shark, a heat-seeking panther. I want to be Bob Denver on acid playing the accordion.”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Here’s one of my goals in life, Aquarius: to show you a type of astrology that does not infringe on your free will, but rather clarifies your options. In this horoscope, for instance, I will outline your alternatives so that you will be fully informed as you determine what course of action will be most closely aligned with your high ideals. Ponder the following question, and then briskly exert your freedom of choice: Would you prefer to have love make your head spin, knock you off your feet, tickle your X-factor, kick you gently but firmly in the ass, or all of the above?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “God changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls, and coal into diamonds by using time and pressure,” says pastor Rick Warren. “He is working on you, too.” Let’s make that idea your meditation, Pisces. If the word “God” doesn’t suit you, substitute “life,” “nature” or “Wakan Tanka,” the Lakotan term for “The Great Mystery.” The essential point is that you are being worked on and shaped by forces beyond your conscious awareness. Some of them are vast and impersonal, like your culture, the media, and the entertainment industry. Others are intimate and close at hand, like your genes, your childhood imprints, and the characters you encounter daily. Now is an excellent time to contemplate all the influences that make you who you are.

Homework: What idea, feeling, or attitude are you enslaved to? What can you do to escape your slavery? Write [email protected].

BACK-tO-SChOOL yOGA FOr everyONeSoaring temperatures are still forecast

but… Summer is officially over! Returning to school from an exciting

summer can cause angst in children and their parents. It is back to resuming bed time hours, making lunches, doing homework, school activities and more. Plus, your child will have a new teacher, meet new friends and may be transitioning to a new school. Going back-to-school does not have to be stressful. It’s yoga to the rescue.

A 2003 study by California State University, Los Angeles found that Yoga improved students’ behavior, physical health and academic performance. Plus, bolstering self-esteem. Consummating a yoga program for your child or teenager will provide them with tools that are life changing and everlasting. The entire family benefits including the parents. It is an activity that parents can share and enjoy with their children. When yoga is involved as a family it fosters a healthier bond.

A child’s concentration and self-esteem can be taken to new levels by teaching them they can achieve greatness on their mat. Also, learning to partake in the present rather than compressing everything. This will help your child remain engaged and focused while cultivating peacefulness. We have often had our child take a nap to achieve this awareness yet yoga has been known to have similar effects. Practicing yoga is a healthy alternative and outlet for stress management, encouraging creativity and piquing the imagination. The peer social interaction teaches children that we are all the same inside regardless of what we look like on the outside. We are living beings that feel and love. Yoga can inspire children to be patient, kind, accepting and respectful of others and self. As a child grows they can learn more about their personal body awareness. A child will recognize their strengths and how the body moves. The practice also encourages discipline and responsibility.

Try a few youthful poses with your children. It may allow you to feel like a kid

again. Many of the yoga poses are inspired by animal names or by things you would find in nature. Take for instance; Tree pose or cat/cow.

Tree pose: Stand on one foot, resting the other foot just above or below the knee. Stay rooted through the standing leg while reaching arms overhead. Turn this into “Windy Tree” pose by slowly moving your arms, as though they were branches in the wind; or try “Tree at Night” by attempting to close your eyes and stay balanced!

Cat/Cow: Position yourself on your mat on all fours like a cat or cow. Begin to round your spine to resemble a scared cat. Draw your chin in towards your chest. Transition to cow by uncurving the spine. Flatten the spine and transition to a slight arch in the lower back, tilt your head back and lengthen your chin to the sky. To make the pose more playful, make cat and cow sounds.

If you desire to try something new or are seeking an activity to do together, yoga may be an exceptional choice. You will be pleasantly surprised how calming yet invigorating this activity is in a family environment.

Evolve Yoga in La Quinta offers Children’s Yoga, Yogability with SueAnn Etebar. Classes resume Sept. 3, 4:00pm-4:50pm. Ages 7-11. The program is offered by monthly enrollment or and/or drop-in’s. body because the heart is hard at work, it pumps through the brain as well depositing very valuable oxygen along the way. Oxygen is vital to brain growth and healing.

The Brain Uses More Oxygen Than Your Muscles

Did you know that the brain uses about three times as much oxygen as the muscles in your body do? Brain cells are very sensitive to decreases in oxygen. They don’t survive or function very long without it. Moving the body requires a deeper inhale and exhale then sitting sedentary on the couch. By moving you force a greater amount of oxygen into your body and in turn it helps stimulate brain and enhance the learning process.

There are many ways to move your body. Think about it. Stand instead of sit. Run instead of walk. Take the bike instead of the car. Swim a few laps, do a few leg lifts, sink into a few deep knee bends. Whatever it is just move your body and get your heart pumping. Your brain will thank you.

If you need a class or two to get motivated don’t hesitate to call Karen, personal trainer, at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. I’d love to help.

Here in the desert fall creeps in with a warm blanket and long shadows. This year it is visiting us with an

early back to school date and many excited students. Some kids however do not look forward to school and the learning process. Quite possibly you have one of them living in your home or maybe you yourself are a student with anxiety.

Back to school stress is not much fun, but there is a simple stress reducing remedy that is as easy as 1-2-3 and A-B-C.

It is well documented that physical fitness encourages brain function. People who are active and exercise absorb and retain new information more effectively than people who are not. In other words, moving the body is fundamental to moving the mind. Getting in shape (and staying in shape) can make you smarter.

Physical fitness does not necessarily require an expensive gym membership or a large chunk of time from your schedule. What it really requires is awareness and desire. Simple activities such as taking the stairs instead of riding the elevator or riding your bike to school instead of sitting in a car are actions that can assist in changing a test score. When the blood pumps through the

if there was an institutional problem, the NCAA may come down harder with sanctions beyond Notre Dame possibly vacating wins from past seasons.

With less than two weeks remaining until Notre Dame’s season opener against Rice, there isn’t a clear timetable as to when the investigation will conclude and/or make a determination about the status of the four players currently suspended from team activities. Swarbrick said the investigation has poured over thousands of emails — which apparently is a point of contention with Phillip Daniels, the former Bears defensive end and father of wide receiver DaVaris Daniels.

On Saturday, Phillip Daniels wrote in a since-deleted tweet: “Message to athletes: Never use the university email system even if you are doing things the right way!”

For now, Daniels, cornerback KeiVarae Russell, linebacker Kendall Moore and defensive end Ishaq Williams will remain suspended from team activities so long as the investigation is ongoing.

“There’s evidence that they may have worked together in a way that just isn’t okay with Notre Dame,” Swarbrick said.

From a football and public relations standpoint, the potential losses of the four key players and the ignominy of an academic investigation have hurt the school over the last 72 hours. But Swarbrick said he’s “especially proud” of the process at Notre Dame (which does not involve athletics) to get to the bottom of the possible academic improprieties.

“We had somebody detect a potential anomaly in a paper. It would’ve been easy to look at the paper, make a determination about that student-athlete and move on,” Swarbrick said. “That’s now how Notre Dame works. We want to make sure — we want to protect the academic integrity and the values of the university.”

Here’s the deal. As the newly devised playoff picture becomes apparently destined to change, NCAA football

schools across the nation have to now gear up to be, uhhh, well at least not worse than 4th place at the end of the season.

Last year, all but one school was going to finish not at the top. It was easy to predict that the have-nots (you know, everyone other than Alabama) would most likely finish outside of the title game. This gave most top tier schools the opportunity to progress their advertising campaign that they were an “Academic Institution” or they may boast, “We graduate 80% of our student athletes.” They could promote their “Programs” knowing that winning the national championships was not realistic. Their advertising dollars could be spent on selling not only the pride of their respective institutions but that of their coveted divisions. The system was that if the Pac-12, for example, sent U.C.L.A. to a major bowl that the revenue would spread through their division. It was sort of a team environment if you will. Each school hoping that the other does well so that they could get a share of the pot.

However now with the new playoff system teams are vying for no worse than fourth and a bid into the no doubt financial juggernaut that will be the NCAA Football final four coverage. It’s forcing teams to skirt once hard lines on academic integrity. After all, top four is WAY easier to achieve then being number one at the end of the season. Take for instance Notre Dames recent academic allegations of (Allegedly) cheating to gain highly acclaimed recruits admittance into the college which normally would pride itself of recruiting the elite academic athlete. I predict what’s happening at Notre Dame to be the tip of the iceberg as some of these institutions find the money to be made in the new playoff system too tempting to continue with a business as usual approach.

Notre Dame’s academic investigation likely will drag on at least through next week, when students return to campus for the fall semester. So for the next few days, no news may be good news for Notre Dame football.

On Monday, though, athletic director Jack Swarbrick said on ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” that “no evidence” has been uncovered in the investigation that shows the possible academic misconduct is a deep-seeded problem with the university.

“My confidence is very high that there isn’t some sort of institutional issue here like a ghost class or a transcript problem or a member of the faculty doing something or an academic adviser,” Swarbrick said. “That I’m very, very confident in.”

Those comments echo what Swarbrick said at Friday’s press conference — that

During the hottest time of the year in the desert, we can have lower energy, be less active and

have a general summer malaise. How do you stay feeling, and looking, great this summer? Here are some great tips from Dr. Maria Lombardo to surviving the summer temperatures and staying on top of your game all year round!

1. A good night’s sleep is essential for healthy skin & well-being! No one can sleep for you so take care to get enough & have the right environment to do it! That means about 8 hours in a darkened room – light can disrupt sleep and make you feel unrested even after the correct number of hours.

2. When you sleep your skin repairs itself - get a good moisturizer so that your skin can do its job well.

3. No matter what moisturizer you use, staying hydrated from the inside is essential for healthy skin & it helps flush toxins out of your body! Don’t forget that we live in a desert… you need more water to stay hydrated than people who live elsewhere! This is especially true in the summer, high heat months. A good rule of thumb is your

weight in pounds divided by 2 = the number of ounces of water you need per day!

4. Everyone knows to wear sunscreen at the pool or playing sports… Here in Southern California you need a minimum of SPF 15 every day to prevent sun damage. Even if you aren’t outside all day!

5. Summer is here and we are wearing less: shorts and sleeveless tops, not to mention swimsuits… if you are trying to lose those last few pounds to get into your bikini… Eating fresh, whole veggie, fruits, nuts & meats is the way to go! Avoiding processed foods and sugars is necessary too. The hCG diet can help you jump start the weight loss using those same foods.

6. Every cell in your body has a wall made of mostly fats! Eat healthy, good fats every day to have healthy cells! This means skin cells, blood cells & brain cells too! Omega-3 oils or capsule supplements can be helpful too.

7. Frowning & worry lines making you look angry? It might be time to try Botox to soften those lines so people will stop asking you “why are you so mad?” Sometimes the best trick to beating the heat is looking cool!

One of my favorite clients is someone I categorize as a superstar. It’s easy to describe

her secret to success. She pushes through her fear. Upon setting a goal this young professional pursues it with careful thought and with great gusto. She is a small business owner with a large vision. Although I am certain this smart lady has a high IQ, she knows she cannot do it all and taps into the appropriate mentors and experts to help her reach the goal line.

I met Dominique several years ago at a business women’s group. She just completed a major relocation across the country. Despite the transition phase she seemed so grounded. Her strategy is forward thinking. Dom researched the group months before her move and began making inroads to members online. Upon landing in the Coachella Valley she already had a network of friends and potential clients for her business.

If no one has ever labeled you a superstar (except your mother), you can earn that title by making a few changes. Begin by pulling out your annual goals for a quick review. Are your objectives large enough to force you out of your comfort zone?

Now, test your vision. If you are preparing for your next career move, spend a moment looking beyond the target. What will you strive for once you achieve that goal? You can enlarge your vision by challenging yourself to push the boundaries. For example, if you are vying for a move into management as a first-line supervisor, the next logical step would be managing a larger staff. Now that you defined the next position, map out what you need to do to get there.

So stop veering away from risk. Want that promotion? Ask for it! The worst thing that could happen is getting a firm no. Rebound from the negative answer by asking what

actions need to be addressed to reach the next level. Knowing what to do puts you one step closer to your goal.

Reaching super-star status means putting yourself out there. People like Dominique subscribe to Woody Allen’s philosophy. “Eighty percent of success is just showing up.” Anyone who knows my client will agree, she always shows up, stays in the moment and adds value.

Life really begins when you step outside your comfort zone. Keep pushing those boundaries and you will succeed. Herb Kelleher, former CEO of Southwest Airlines put it this way: “We have an action plan, it’s called doing things.”

Challenge yourself to action. Superstardom is within your reach. Just keep showing up and reaching for the stars.
