Loire Valley Chateaux

and Cultural Visits

d o m a i n e d e l a c o u r b e

Catch a first-hand experience of culture, art and splendor visiting France’s picturesque Loire Valley. The quaint stretch is littered with fairy-tale châteaux (many that are UNESCO-listed), a legacy of the many noble families, authors, poets, aristocrats, and royalty who settled here because of its strategic riverside setting and proximity to Paris. Conveniently located on the borders of Anjou, Maine and Touraine, Domaine de La Courbe is your home base for your trip. Get ready to be mesmerized the pristine beauty of the region’s best estates, gardens, game reserves, vineyards, and charming towns.

Within a 50 km radius you can discover :

- LE LUDE«This magnificent château, lying on one bank of the Loire, offers visitors a fascinating mixture of styles: medieval and Gothic, with its big, round towers; Italian Renaissance, with its layout, its dormer windows and medallions; and Louis XVI, with its harmonious riverside façade. You are sure to be as impressed by the quality of the interior tapes-tries, woodwork, exceptional paintings, and exquisite furniture, as by the superb park overlooking the Loire.” (The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire) http://www.tourisme-bassinludois.fr

- LA FLECHE«La Flèche is more than just its beautiful Prytanée, the Jesuit college turned national military school, renowned since the 17th century. It is also the Loire valley, the beautiful forest of Chambriers, the châteaux, the quaint villages of Bazouges and Durtal, all in a secret little world of water and greenery.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.ville-lafleche.fr

- BAUGE“King René, who liked to hunt in the neighboring forests, had a residence built there; then the Lord of Jarzé started cultivating pear orchards...Here and there valleys, streams, chapels, and Romanesque and Renaissance churches brighten a tranquil lands-cape of heath, deep woods, luminous meadows and hedgerows.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.baugeenanjou.fr

- MALICORNE“The stones of the Château de Malicorne reach right down to the water’s edge. From the bridge, there is a charming view of a mill and the poplar-lined river banks. An 11th century church holds the recumbent figure of a lord of Chaource, a Pietà (in the right transept) and, on the left wall of the nave, a lovely 16th century piscine, a small basin for holding sacramental water. The Château de Malicorne, with its turrets and Mansard roofs, once belonged to the Marquise of Lavardin.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.ville-malicorne.fr

Loire Valley Chateaux and Cultural Visits

- SOLESMES“From the bridge and the right bank of the Sarthe, there is an impressive view of the abbey, with its somber 50 meter wall, built in Romano-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. The buildings are reflected in the waters of the river; an 18th century priory, less imposing but more graceful, extends their length. Only the abbey church (at the back of the main courtyard) is accessible to the public. This church consists of an ancient (11th-15th century) nave and transept, with a dome-vaulted choir added in 1865.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.abbayedesolesmes.fr

- LE MANS«Le Mans, capital of the province of Maine, satisfies all appetites. For gourmets, there are local pork specialties, fragrant reinette apples, and organic chickens; art lovers ap-preciate the grand cathedral with its apse, portals, and stained glass windows; walkers ramble through the city’s alleys and its quays along the Sarthe; and, for lovers of speed, there is the famous race track with its mythic Hunaudières (or ‘Mulsanne’) straight.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.lemans.fr

- TOURS«Tours, the largest city in the Loire Valley, with Orléans and Angers close behind, is the capital of the traditional province of Touraine and formerly a ‘royal city.’ Tours has no fewer than three historic districts, perfectly preserved: the Old City, with its Plumereau Square and medieval and Renaissance houses; the Saint-Julien District in its center; and, further east, the Cathedral District, the seat of the Catholic archdiocese. Enjoy fascinating long walks, strolling along Tours’ shopping and pedestrian streets, and chance upon small secluded squares, beautiful hotels, and gardens. And, when it’s time for something more restful, visit the peaceful Saint-Cosme priory, with its roses and the memory of its long-ago prior, the poet Ronsard.»((The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.tours-tourisme.fr

- VILLANDRYVillandry has an aura of the Renaissance; outdoors, displayed among the most beautiful gardens in France, you will find paintings, large tapestries elaborately embroidered in bold colors, and expertly crafted arabesques. The gardens are a sumptuous plant uni-verse, meticulously arranged, where the simplest vegetable takes on the appearance of a work of art. As evening comes, marvel as the sun lengthens the shadows of the hedges and arbors, swathed in the scent of the roses.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.villandry.fr

- AZAY-LE-RIDEAU«Described as a ‘dream at dawn emerging from a golden mist,’ and a ‘facet-cut dia-mond set by the Indre river’, this little palace, poised as if balanced on its liquid mirror, seems to belong in a fairy tale. In this romantic and bewitching place, we can easily imagine a beautiful princess sleeping in the silence of these calm waters, lulled by the rustle of the great sycamores. Every detail of this palace, its architecture, decor, and proportions, arouses not so much admiration as wonder.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://azay-le-rideau.monuments-nationaux.fr

Loire Valley Chateaux and Cultural Visits

- CHINON“Chinon, a stunning medieval fortress, is an array of romantic ruins sprawled under the Touraine sky. At its feet, the little town extends its alleys, squares and quays along the Vienne River. This is a valley rich in culture and history, a country of hillsides and golden vineyards, whose exceptional climate has favored the development of an exceptional wine.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.ville-chateau-chinon.fr

- FONTEVRAUD“Fontevraud Abbey, the last home of the Plantagenets, despite extensive damage, remains one of the largest monastic complexes remaining in France. It preserves pure jewels of Anjou architecture: a superb abbey with aerial vaults, multi-colored recumbent figures, and a very impressive kitchen.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.abbayedefontevraud.com

- SAUMUR«Its nickname is ‘the pearl of Anjou’...However to some, its castle, perched on its stone pedestal and capturing the soft Loire sun like a gilt illumination, seems to have leapt off one of the pages of the medieval devotional book, The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry. Saumur is also horse country, so why not succumb to the charm of the Cadre Noir riding masters in their elegant black and gold uniforms? And if their virtuoso equestrian demonstrations leave your mouth a little dry, there are many deep cellars, with their famous sparkling wines, awaiting your visit.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)http://www.ville-saumur.fr

- USSÉThe Château d’Ussé, overlooking the Indre River and at the very edge of Chinon Forest, was the inspiration for Charles Perrault’s fairy tale, ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ Establi-shed on the foundations of an 11th century fortress, it was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. The interior houses Flemish tapestries and Asian weapons. The Guard Room has a beautiful ceiling. The King’s bed chamber and the chapel in the park are worth a visit.»(The Michelin Green Guide to the Châteaux of the Loire)https://www.chateaudusse.fr

- WINE CELLAR VISITSWe can also suggest tours to labeled cellars for these wine appellations: Côteaux du Loire, Jasnières, Champigny, Chinon, Bourgeuil, and Saumur.Information on Domaine de La Courbe
