Development implies a multi-faceted, long term, growth process. The coach should always be continually improving.

A program rather than one event. Consisting of various options to meet the needs of all coaches.

COACHING – the act of doing it. Yes, we want to improve the coaching a person is doing; but more importantly, we want to impact the person. THE COACH

The OYSA offers free 1-2 hour clinics, usually conducted during the pre-season (August & March). Clinics must be arranged with the OYSA in advance and interested coaches need to pre-register for these events. Most often designed for a specific age group.

The club can assign a ‘senior’ coach to help with the development of a ‘junior’ coach. The mentor can observe practice sessions and games to provide valuable advice and oversight to the less-experienced coach. This mentor can also provide a formal coach evaluation, which the club can use to help develop the coach – and use for future coaching staff assignments.

Coach Mentoring

Informal Coach Development Events

Within the club, assign an older team to one of the younger teams. Serving as the Brother / Sister team and appearing at practices, support the other team during games and allowing the older team to provide some coaching support to the players on the younger team is a wonderful way to create club identity, provide role models for the younger group, foster leadership skills in the older group – and provide assistance to the coach of the younger team.

Brother / Sister Teams

Other good ideas for Coach Development within a club.

By identifying players on HS age teams, providing them with some training or guidance, and assigning them to serve as assistant coaches or other roles within the club; future generations of coaches, referees, tournament directors, and leaders are developed.

HS age players serving as Assistant Coaches (or Referees)
