Tipperary County Sen i or Hurling Final 2003

nvo CraCking games I n P rospect By Ed Donnelly

(P.R.O. Tipper.ry G.A.A. Board)

Today sees the showpiece of the hurling season in Tipperary, Ihe County Senior &. Minor Hurling finals. A County Final IS always a special occasion for the clubs Involved but the Senior County

Hurling Final In TIpperary brings spectators from all comers 01 the county This year's fmal should be nodlHerent . The clubs may be familiar but both sides have been Changing their team around. looking for the successful formula that will bring back the Dan Breen Cup.

Toomevara win be looking for their a1h County title In 12 seasons, an amazing feat when you consider thai they were an Inlermedials club In the mid-1980's. Howeller. resurgence in their juvenile struclures in the 1970's and 1980's ensured a conveyor bell of young players, whIch eventually led to the C<lunty Final success in 1992. For a club to stay on top for SO long, It is Important to koep changing the personnel. Players like Jocly Grace. Rory Brislane. Michael O·Meara. Pat King, Michael Nolan and Kevin Kennedy have been replaced . Tha replacements have not been too bad either when you think 01 Benny Dunne, Eoln Bristane , Ken Dunne. Paddy O'Brien , John O'Brien and FranCiS Devanney to name but a few. Their defeat to Mullinahone in last year's semi-final was a blow but they have bounced back and have been undefeated In the champIonshIp to date and must be favountes to retaIn the Dan Breen Cup today.

Whal of Thurles Sarslields? When they lost their 3ra County Final on the trot last year, many said i\ was the end lor that team . like Toomevara in the past. a lot of wort< IS being done at juvenile level in Thurles and Durlas Og have been winning numerous County titles since their foundation In 1979. The success at juvenile level did not translate in to County litles lor Sarsflelds however and only I Minor tille was won between 1975 and 1998. ThiS Changed however in 1999 when the County Minor title was secured under the

stewardship of Olnny Maher. Not content with one title. they went on to complete a three in a row at minor level before winning the County Under-21 tille in 2002. When Oinny Maher was given the reins of the Senior team in 2003, the locals were prepared for a transition period , as new players fresh from underage success would be given a chance. In the wins over Mullinahone and Nenagh Eire 6g. the new took learn dlsplayeo a last ftowing. skilful game. telling the ball do the wort<. These players are used to success and when things go against them, they keep plugging away confident in their own ability. Confidence and hunger are two of Ihe more important ingredients in any sporl and Sarsflelds won't be lacking in either departmen\today. I look forward to a cracking game

In the MInor deCider. I am delighted to see my own club Moycart<ey-Borns involved as they take on the Soulh champions Camck Swan. Moycart<ey have won 3 C<lunly Minor -A" titles In their history but have not appeared in a final since 1986. They will look to their captain David Sheppard tor Inspiration . Carrick Swan has a proud tradition and while County titles have been won at Senior and Under·21 , they are lOOking for their first minor IllIe here loday. Their captain today is Darren Fahey who comes from a fami ly wilh a long tradition in the club. stretching back to their only County Senior title In 1947. Most of these players have been involved at under-14 level when Felle and county championships were won In 1999 and 2001 so their pedigree is good . All I can say on thiS one IS -May the best team win"

1 am honoured to Introduce the TIpperary players from one of the golden era's in our great history. The 46 players who won five AIIIreland's for Tipperary between 1958 and t 965 will be honoured before Ihe Senior game today. I am sure you will give these legends ot the ancient game your appreCiatIOn. I look forward to a great day in Semple Stadium today and lets hope for 2 excellent sportIng contests.

C lose on seventy years after he retired from inter-county hurling,

Martin Kennedy is still regarded as the finest full forward ever produced by Tipperary_ But the Toomevara man distinguished himself in a variety of positions in the Blue and Gold colours, making his mark initially at centre forward on the team Ihatlost to Kilkenny in the 1922 All-Ireland final. That proved to be a bitterly disappointing defeat for Tipp in that they had laurels snatched from their grasp as Kilkenny, looking dead and buried, came with a lale surge to finish with just two points to spare, 4-2 to 2-6. Three years later, however, Martin won his first All-Ireland medal as Tipp thrashed Galway to the tune of 5-6 to 1-5 in the final. He won a second in 1930 when Dublin fell by 2-7 to 1-3 to Tipp In the decider, and, at that stage, he was a household name, having met and mastered some of the most accomplished defenders in the game at the time. Indeed, his prowess as a full

Martin also played at full forward on the learn that brought the first National league title to Tipperary in 1927, the year that saw the introduction of the inter-provincial series. Selection on the Munster team was a tremendous honour in those days, and iI's a measure of Martin's high rating as a forward that he went on to become the first player ever to line out in nine consecutive Railway Cup finals. He won the last of his six medals at the age of 36 in the 1935 final when he was Tipp's

sale representative on a slarstudded Munster side thaI included other all-time greats in limerick's Mick Mackey, Paddy Scanlon, Paddy Clohessy and Timmy Ryan, Waterford's Charlie Ware and Cork Micka Brennan. There have been many outstanding full forwards to grace the hurling fields down through the decades, most notably perhaps Wexford's Nicky Rackard and Tony Doran, and Cork's Ray Cummins. But it would be true to say that Martin Kennedy is up there with the best of them, and he would have to be a leading contender for the No. 14 shirt when it comes to picking an all-time best hurfing lifteen.

PLAYSTATIONS The never-ending walk from what

seemed like the widest main street in the world, past a lake, to a cement

seat, only feet from the action. My first county final - Templemore 1960

Who was I with? How did I get there? I have no idea I do remember the strange names which leaped at me from the programme, Mounsey, McElgunn, Craddock, Oorneys and Houghs

Some of the greats of hurling displayed their skills, Jimmy Doyle, Tony Wall, Mickey Byrne and Phil Shanahan. But it was the lesser-known names such as the Oonovans and Frankie Ryan, who scored the crucial goals.

I saw Jimmy Doyle score 1-3, Sean McLoughlin score 1-1 and Phil Shanahan score 0-3. My most vivid memories, however, are of Tom Ryan pointing long-range frees, and a point scored by the be-spectacled Matt C'Gara, from well inside his own

ha!f. together with two points by Sarsfields' own Corkman, Tim Walsh.

The nick-names remain in the memory, Blackie Keane and Musha Maher, as do the incredible scenes of joy from the Toome supporters at the end. They had won their first final since 1931 and stopped Sarsfields from achieving six-in-a-row. Thurles, the greatest club side of all time, were to win the next five.

Statistics, however, were far from a young boy's mind on that October day. Very appropriately, the town of the 'Big Temple' had introduced me to a second religion, which has given so much pleasure in the intervening years, that have passed as quickly as a Jimmy Doyle sidestep.

My hope is that today's final will hold similar enduring memories for our first-lime attenders.

On 12th October, 1975, Moneygall

and Kilruane drew 3-9 each in the

county senior final while Cashel K.C. beat

Roscrea 2-15 to 0-4 in the minor final.

On 13th October, 1974, Thurles Sarsfields won their last senior county title while Cashel K.C.

beat Roscrea in the minor semi-final 3-9 to 2-3

Including their drawn clash in the 1992 deciders, Toomevara and Thurles Sarsfields have met on seven occasions since that season and the 'Blues' are still seeking a win in the modern era. The details were:

1992 i~~:~:~: g~~~ i~~~::~ ~:::::~~ ~~~ [eo. Final] 1993 Toomevara 0-18 Thurles S'fields 0-9 [eo Semi.final] 1994 Toomevara 2-16 Thurles S·fields 0-9 (Co. Last Sarsfields' win The last Sarsfield's win over Toomevara was achieved on

15th September, 1974, when they had a 3-15 to 2-9 victory in the county semi-final at Nenagh. The Mid men went on to win their last county title that season beating Silvermines, captained by Jim O'Brien, in a 3-6 to 1-10 scoreline

Tipperary County Senior Hurling Final 2003

Review of the 1958 Campaign

Tipperary's first championship match in the 1958 Munster championship was against limerick at Cork. Only seven of

the previous year's championship team, Mickey Byme, john Doyle,Jimmy Finn, Tony Wall, John Hough, Musha Maher and jimmy Doyle, were selected. john O'Grady was the new goalkeeper.

limerick were favourites as a result of an impressive display against Wexford in the league final, but Tipperary confounded the pundits and beat them by double scores. Jimmy Doyle together with newcomers, john O'Grady. Kieran Carey and Noel Murphy impressed. In the Munster semi-final. over 45,000 people saw Tipperary wipe away memories of seven lean years, when they defeated Cork by 2·6 to 2-4,

The Munster final was played at Thurles and forty-two thousand spectators saw one of the poorest Munster finals for years. Waterford had qualified by virtue of beating Kerry in the semi·final and Tipperary were much too good for them, beating them by sixteen points. The Tipperary forwards gave a vastly improved performance. PartiCularly impressive was Larry Keane at corner·forward. John Doyle

gave an outstanding display at wing-back. The All-Ireland semi-final against Kilkenny at Croke Park will be remembered as the game of the 'twO Doyles'.The 'dynamic' john and the 'deadly' Jimmy made a major conuibution to

Tipperary's 1-13 to 1-8 victo· ry. Over 53,000 spectators witnessed as tense and exciting a first half as anything seen in Croke Park for years previously. Rain fell incessantly during the game.

Only 47,000 spectators. the lowest figure since 1944. attended the All-Ireland Final between Tipperary and GalWiI'f. Tipperary won by 4-9 to 2-5 in a very disappointing final. They started the warmest favourites since Cork played Anuim in 1943.

Having won the tOSS Tipperary captain, Tony Wall, decided to

play against the breeze. They dominated the first half and led by 4-4 to 1·3 at the interval. Galway Changed goalkeepers at the interval and put up much stiffer resistance against the wind so much so that Tipperary scored only five points during the half.

Tipperary County Senior Hurling Final 2003

TONY WALL (Thurles Sarsfields, -Tipperary Captain 1958

Tony Wall Is rightly remembered, among hurling enthusiasts, as one of the greatest backmen to wear the Tipperary

colours. Tony's career first came to prominence With Thurles C.BS .. winning hack-toback Harty Cup honours in 1950 and'5 1. A place OIl the county minor team was natural progression for such a promising young hurler and for three years (1950 - '52) he represented TIpperary. in which time he contested cwo All Ireland finals. Captaining the victorious team in 1952.

The C01.lnty senior team now beckoned and from 1953 to his retirement at the close of 1967TonyWail was to playa key role In the hurling fortunes of the Premier County. It W,iIS

He was given this pivotal position following the retirement of Pat 5takelum. one of hurling's finest to don the No. 6 jersey. Tony Wall admirably answered the challenge of this role, leading Tipperary to All Ireland ViCtOry In 1958 and being awarded the Caltex Hurler of the Year award in that year. The dec;ade to follow was an era of riches for TIpperary hurling and it brought TOllY an abundance of honours: Railway Cups. National leagues, Oireachtas titles. Munster titles: seven Senior AJI Ireland finals contested, five victories (1958, '61. '62. '64:65).

All during thiS period, Tony was playing outstanding hurling With Thurles Sarsfields. In the period 1955 to·65. Tony. leading from centreback. was one of the main cogs in the Slues machine as they captured ten county titles. losing O1.It only in 1960. His hurting was efficlem and precise, reflecting his training and thinking as an army man. Favouring an unusually heavy hurley. his approach was strategy driven: tactical. clinical and calculating. matched by a tempenment that was phlegmatic and unflappable. In his centreback play. he saw his first task as halting the advance. be it ground or aeriel; then the clearance, short or long as the circumstances dictated. hurling the 'tan '

Matt Hassett (Toomevara) -Tipperary Captain 1961

Acousin of the famous 'Wedger' Meagher of the 'Greyhounds' fame, it was only natural that Matt Hassett

should be interested in hurling from the cradle. He started hurling at a very young age, making his advent to juvenile hurling as a very young member orToomevara teams in the forties. progressing to minor level, and eventually to adult level in the fifties and sixties.

He won a North division Intermediate championship in r 955 and the first of four North senior championships in 1958. The others followed in 1960.1961,1962. In all he played in seven North senior finals in a row between 1957 and 1963. The highlight of his club career was winning the county senior title in 1960. the first for the dub since 193 I. He has also some football achievemenu. with three county final medals won. With a North Selection in 1958 and with a Toomevara-Moneygall-lnane Rovers Selection in 1959 and 1961.

He captained Tipperary In 196 I. leading them to victory over Cork in the Munster final. in which his direct opponent was the fam01.lS Christy Ring. He went on to lead the county successfully against Dublin In the AIIIreland. the only Toomevara man ever to captain an All-Ireland senior winning team. until Tommy Dunne did so in 2001 .

In 1960. after winning a Munster final at corner-back, he missed O1.It on an AU-Ireland medal. when Tipperary was surprisingly defeated by Wexford. There was some revenge in 1962. when he won his second All-Ireland medal. albeit as a reserve, against the same opposition.

Before his hurling career was over he went into administration. serving in tum as secretary, chairman and president of his dub. secretary of the north board, and treasurer of the

board.

Review of the 1961 Campaign

Tipperary started their 1961 Munster camp<lign ~~inst Galway in the semi· final at Ennis. Galway had their only

success in the Munster championship that year when they beat Clare in the first round. Tipperary were ahead by 6·9 to I· ... thirteen minutes Into the second half. Galway, however. refused to lie down and in a great burst of effort scored four goats in the space of seven minutes. Tipperary rallied a bit in the final minutes to win by 7-12 to 5·6.

The Munster final at limerick attracted an official attendance of 62.175, the biggest crowd ever to witness a sporting event in Ireland outside Croke Park. The Cork team, which togged out in a City hotel, had to ab~ndon their cars halfway out the Ennis Road, and force their way through a throng of spectators to get to the ground. With their concentration broken they arrived at the pitch in twOS and threes. Meanwhile, Tipperary had togged OUt in the grounds.

With Jimmy Doyle and Donie Nealon in brilliant form. Tipperary built up a match·

Winning lead of 3-3 to 0- r at halftime. Although Cork improved in the second half. their attack relied too much on Chmty Ring. who was approaching his ... 1 st birthday. By the finish, Tipperary were clear winners by 3-6 to 0-7. It was Ring's last appearance in a Munster fin~L

Tipperary were expected to beat Dublin in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park on September 3 and many predicted an easy viCtory for the Premier County. The result was much different. Tipperary won the game by 0-16 to 1·12, and It took all their determin~lion to hold OUt against a very fine Dublin side. that was much superior in speed. Dublin lost because they could do everything but get the scores they should have got. It was Dublin's last time to get out of leinster. It was the first hurling nutch to be televised by RTf.

Tipperary County Senior Hurling Final 2003

Review of the 1965 Campaign

Tipperary had an easy viCtory over Clare in the 1965 Munster semi-final at limerick. It was a very mediocre game

that saw a crafty and experienced Tipperary side pitted against a fast and enthusiastic but Immature opposition. They were ahead by 2 .... to 0-1 at the break, and had eleven points to spare at the final whistle on a scoreline of 5-8 to ]-3. BeSt for the winne" were John O'Donoghue. Kieran Carey, Len Gaynor. Theo English, Uam Devaney and Donie Nealon.

Tipperary inflicted a crushing defeat on Cork in the Munster final at limerick. An indication of their superiority was the faCt that viCtory was achieved without the services of Babs Keating and Larry Kiely, absent through Injury and illness. The winners were in front by 2·4 to 0-4 at the interval. and held Cork to a point in the second half. It was Tipperary's 29th Munster senior hurling title and brought them level with Cork.

npperary's winning side had seventy-four All-Ireland medals between them. Of the twenty-two players on the selection four were from the county champions. Thurles Sarsfields and. in all. there were represenutives from sixteen dubs. larry Kiely had the distinction of being the only member of the team, who had won an AII·lreland medal with another county. a iunior medal with Kildare in 1962.

That this Tipperary team was one of the finest hurting combinations of all time was proven in the All-Ireland final on September 5, when they defeated Wexford by 2-16 to 0·10. The victory, before 70,000 specuto", gave Tipperary their twenty-first All-I reland title. and thei r fourth in five years. For John Doyle it was a memorable occasion as it brought him his eighth medal. which put him on a par with Christy Ring. Tipperary were in command all through the game and the foundation of the success was an impregnable inner line of defence. and two goals by Sean McLoughlin in the first quarter of the game. Tipperary led by 2·5 [0 0-6 at halftime and at no time in the game was their victory in doubt.
