NationalCo-operatives UK This is the national trade body that campaigns for co-operation and works to promote, develop and unite co-operative enterprises across many sectors of the economy, providing model rules, legal advice and other support. Together the co-operative economy is worth £33.2 billion and has 12.8 million members. www.uk.coop

Co-operatives and mutuals are active in a huge variety of sectors, as this Directory shows. According to 2012 data, there were over 600 co-operatives and mutuals in the South West, with a combined turnover of over £3.35 billion; this figure has surely grown with the renewed interest in co-operatives and mutuals over the last few years.
Co-operatives, everywhere in the world share an identity with agreed values & principles that guide their business; at the heart of this is democracy - one member, one vote. In every co-operative, large or small, it is members who control the business. They help create a fairer society, uniting their members around common goals.
There are a variety of organisational structures, such as community benefit societies, multi- stakeholder co-operatives and co-operative Community Interest Companies (CICs). Other types of mutual enterprise share many commonalities with co-operatives: they are usually democratically controlled and hold assets in common or are co-owned (www.mutuo.co.uk). Examples of mutual organisations are mutual building societies (www.bsa.org.uk), those employee owned businesses that don’t adopt a co-op form (www.employeeownership.co.uk) and other financial mutuals such as mutual insurers and healthcare providers (www.financialmutuals.org). Woodcraft Folk is the co-operative children and young people’s movement with branches across the UK (www.woodcraft.org.uk).
Federal bodies represent their members within a particular sector, such as Country Markets (www.country-markets.co.uk), and Supporters Direct whose members are many Football Supporters’ Trusts around the country (www.supporters-direct.org).
The last general election was the first time that the manifestos of the three main parties contained a commitment to support co-operatives and other types of mutual enterprise. There is also an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) supporting mutuality across a range of sectors, including Building Societies & Financial Mutuals.

Community shops and pubs can transform struggling, often isolated villages into vibrant rural communities. Whilst about 400 commercially run shops have closed over the last 20 years, the number of community owned shops has grown dramatically. Being democratically run and with committed and engaged volunteers undoubtedly contributes to their success. Recent years have also seen a big increase in community owned pubs whose customers - many who have helped set up, develop and run the business - are more likely to use them to their full potential. Community owned shops and pubs are now recognized as successful models of business by all the major political parties.

The Schools Co-operative Society (SCS) is the national co-ordinating body for co-operative schools, a new and dynamic sector of state education and currently the fastest growing sector of the UK Co-operative Movement. It is a secondary co-operative owned by its member schools that networks, co-ordinates, provides support and is a mechanism providing for their collective voice.
The network in the South West is the largest across England with almost 200 schools, covering primary, secondary and special education. The South West has its own branch of the SCS with a representative governance
structure including its own elected Board, which steers activity and ensures the views of member schools are represented.
The schools and the Trust Boards of co-operative schools welcome the involvement of external partners. The aim is for the Trusts to benefit from the experience and expertise of partners in order to help strengthen their leadership and governance and hence raise school standards, as well as enhance both formal and informal learning through partner involvement. Partners from the co-operative and mutual sectors are especially welcome and are encouraged to become involved.
