Texts and TranslationsThe Star-Spangled Banner (3 minutes)JOHN STAFFORD-SMITH (1750–1836)Text by Francis Scott Key (1779–1843)Arranged by Eric Whitacre

O say can you see by the dawn’s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fightO’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in airGave proof through the night that our flag was still thereO say does that star-spangled banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Lux Aurumque (4 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE (b. 1970)Text by Edward Esch (b. 1970)

Ach lifnéy zman a lu lechán shna’im,Uveynenu nish ár sentiméter echad.”

Light, warm and heavy as pure goldand angels sing softlyto the new-born baby.

A picture is engraved in my heart;Moving between light and darkness:A sort of silence envelopes your body,And your hair falls upon your face just so.

Light brideShe is all mine,And lightlyShe will kiss me!

“Mostly,” said the roof to the sky,“the distance between you and I is endlessness;

But a while ago two came up here, and only one centimeter was leftbetween us.”

Little Birds (3 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by Octavio Paz (1914–98)

What snow!Like little dreamsFalling from the sky.

He was full of tenderness; She was very hard. And as much as she tried to stay thus,Simply, and with no good reason,He took her into himself,And set her downIn the softest, softest place.

Light unblinking, time empty of minutes,a bird stopped short in air.

Light flung down, the pillars awake and, without moving, dance.

The time is transparent:even if the bird is invisible, let us see the color of his song.

The Seal Lullaby (4 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936)

Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find usAt rest in the hollows that rustle between.

Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow;Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease! The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

The Battle of Jericho (2 minutes)Traditional SpiritualArranged by Moses Hogan

Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho,Jericho, Jericho,Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho, and the walls come tumbalin’ down.Talk about your kings of Gideon,Talk about you men of Saul, but none like good old Joshuaat the Battle of Jericho.Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho,Jericho, Jericho,Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho, and the walls come tumbalin’ down.Right up to the walls of Jericho,He marched with spear in hand.“Go blow that ramhorn!” Joshua cried.‘Cause the battle am in my hand.God, almighty, Then the lamb, ram, sheep horns begin to blowand the trumpet begins to sound.Joshua commanded the children to shout!Oh Lord, yes, and the walls come a tumbalin’ down.Oh Lord, you know thatJoshua fit the Battle of Jericho,Jericho, Jericho,Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho, and the walls come tumbalin’ down.

Hurt (7 minutes)TRENT REZNOR (b. 1965)Arranged by Eric Whitacre

I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel,I focus on the pain, the only thing that’s real. The needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting, try to kill it all away, but I remember ev’ry thing.

What have I become? My sweetest friend, every one I know, goes away in the end, and you could have it all my empire of dirt,I will let you down.I will make you hurt.

I wear this crown of thorns upon my liar’s chair, full of broken thoughts, I cannot repair.Beneath the stains of time, the feelings disappear, You are someone else, I am still right here.

What have I become? My sweetest friend, every one I know,

goes away in the end, and you could have it all my empire of dirt,I will let you down.I will make you hurt.

Goodnight Moon (5 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by Margaret Wise Brown (1910–52)

In the great green roomthere was a telephoneand a red balloonand a picture ofThe cow jumping over the moon,

and there were three little bears sitting on chairs, and two little kittens, and a pair of mittens, and a little toyhouse, and a young mouse, and a comb and a brush, and a bowl full of mush, and a quiet old lady who was whispering “hush.”

Goodnight room, goodnight moon, goodnight cow jumping over the moon, goodnight light, and the red balloon

Goodnight bears,goodnight chairs,goodnight kittens,and goodnight mittens

Goodnight clocks, and goodnight socks, goodnight little houseand goodnight mouse

Goodnight comb, and goodnight brush, goodnight nobody, goodnight mush, and goodnight to the old lady whispering “hush”.

Goodnight stars,goodnight air,goodnight noises everywhere.

i carry your heart with me (i carry it inmy heart) i am never without it (anywhere

i go you go, my dear; and whatever is doneby only me is your doing, my darling)

i fear no fate (for you are my fate) i wantno world (for beautiful you are my world)and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meantand whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows(here is the root of the root and the bud of the budand the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which growshigher than soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

Home from The Sacred Veil (4 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by Charles Anthony Silvestri

Dreaming, longing, finding you.Seaside, and strawberries, falling for you.For you feel like home.Kissing, touching, holding you. You, feel like home.

The City and the Sea (14 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by E.E. Cummings

No. 1: i walked the boulevardi walked the boulevard i saw a dirty child skating on noisy wheels of joy patheticdress fluttering behind her a mother monster with red grumbling face cluttered inpursuit pleasantly elephantine while nearby the father a thick cheerful man withmajestic bulbous lips and forlorn piggish hands joked to a girlish whore with busyrhythmic mouth and silly purple eyelids of how she was with child.

No. 2: the moon is hiding in her hairthe moon is hiding in her hair. the lily of heaven full of all dreams, draws down.cover her briefness in singing close her with intricate faint birds by daisies and twi-lights deepen her, recite upon her flesh the rain’s pearls singly-whispering

No. 3: maggie and milly and molly and maymaggie and milly and molly and may went down to the beach (to play one day) andmaggie discovered a shell that sang so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and milly befriended a stranded star whose rays five languid fingers were; and mollywas chased by a horrible thing which raced sideways while blowing bubbles andmay came home with a smooth round stone as small as a world and as large asalone. for whatever we lose (like a you or a me) it’s always ourselves we find in the sea

Cloudburst (8 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE

The broken water jarThe rain…

Eyes of shadow-water,eyes of well-water,eyes of dream-water.

Blue suns, green whirlwinds, birdbeaks of light pecking openpomegranate stars.

But tell me, burnt earth, is there no water?Only blood, only dust, only naked footsteps on the thorns?

The rain awakens…

We must sleep with open eyes,we must dream with our hands,we must dream the dreams of a riverseeking its course,

of the sun dreaming its worlds,we must dream aloud,we must sing till the song puts forth roots, trunk, branches, birds, stars,we must find the lost word, and remember what the blood, the tides, the earth, and the body say,and return to the point of departure…

Sleep (6 minutes)ERIC WHITACRE Text by Charles Anthony Silvestri

The evening hangs beneath the moon,A silver thread on darkened dune. With closing eyes and resting headI know that sleep is coming soon.

Text by Octavio Paz, adapted by Eric Whitacre Translation by Lysander Kemp (1920–92)

04-08 DCINY Mat.qxp_CH Rental 3/28/18 3:09 PM Page 9

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,A thousand pictures fill my head,I cannot sleep, my mind’s a-flight;And yet my limbs seem made of lead.

If there are noises in the night,A frightening shadow, flickering light; Then I surrender unto sleep,Where clouds of dream give second sight.

What dreams may come, both dark and deep,Of flying wings and soaring leapAs I surrender unto sleep,As I surrender unto sleep.
