Solapur and Nabinagar orders form a part of NTPC’s bulk tender in 2011, in which ABFPL emerged as the lowest bidder. NMDC looking to acquire more overseas assets Hyderabad, Sitting on cash reserves of Rs.22,000 crore, National Mineral Development Corporation, India's largest iron ore producer, is looking to acquire more assets overseas. C.S. Verma, NDMC chairman and managing director, told reporters here that they were look- ing into various proposals for acquisitions includ- ing four proposals for coal and another three to four iron ore assets. "These are opportune times. We are looking into various proposals and depending on the merit of each case, we will take a view," he said. Verma, however, declined to give any time frame to complete the acquisitions, saying they were not in a hurry. He said NDMC was also looking at overseas acquisitions through Legacy Iron Ore, an Aus- tralian company in which NDMC bought 50 per- cent stake. The public sector miner as an active partner of International Coal Ventures Limited is looking to acquire various coal assets in different coun- tries. To another query, Verma said NMDC was trying to operationalise the licence it got for a gold mine in Tanzania. Recovery in sight, says Britain's central bank gover London, Britain's central bank governor has said the country's economy is set for a recovery but the road ahead will not be smooth. Services and manu- facturing, which make up the bulk of the British economy, had grown by 1.2 percent during 2012, close to a 1.5-percent growth in the US and con- siderably stronger than in Japan and the eurozone, Mervyn King said at a press conference. The weakness in over- all output largely reflected sharp falls in the construc- tion sector, which is "un- likely to be repeated in 2013", Xinhua quoted him as saying. "Growth is likely to be weak in the near term," the Bank of England governor said, adding that both domes- tic and overseas demand are weak. The British central bank said in its monthly report that inflation would remain above the bank's target of two percent in the next two years, and will probably rise to three percent by this summer. In its previous report released in November, the bank forecast the in- flation to drop back to two percent in the second half this year. Attempts to bring infla- tion back to target sooner would risk "derailing the recovery", King said. Analysts said the bank continued to prioritise the goal of "supporting the economic recovery" to "controlling inflation" amid uncertain economic pros- pects. The Bank of England has kept benchmark in- terest rate at a record low of 0.5 percent for over three years now and has launched a series of quantitative easing mea- sures totalling 375 billion pounds ($582 billion) since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008. Britain's gross do- mestic output contracted by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, triggering worries that the economy would return to recession if the first quar- ter saw contraction again.
