CMAI is the earliest and the most representativeAssociation of the Garment Industry in India. With a

membership of over 2,500 manufacturers and 15,000

retailers, CMAI represents a wide cross section ofManufacturers, Exporters and Retailers.

The Association has branches in Pune/Solapur in WesternMaharashtra and in Bangalore in Karnataka. Established40 years ago, The Clothing Manufacturers Association of

India [CMAI], has been acting as a catalyst of change, collaborating with the Government in matters of policy that

impacts the future of the Apparel Industry. It has beenmaking representations in matters of Excise, Sales Tax,

Octroi, Entry Tax, etc. for the domestic sector and inmatters relating to export policy, procedures, export

quotas, etc. for the export sector.

The CMAI also acts as a guide for its members on

meeting various Government regulations.CMAI wasprimarily responsible for the setting up of the ApparelExport Promotion Council [AEPC] in Mumbai, Delhi,

Madras, Bangalore and Kolkata way back in 1978 forregulating the promotion of Exports of Readymade

Garments from India. CMAI organises National GarmentFair every year. This Fair has proved to be the most

important trade event for the garment industry. Being thelargest conglomeration of Retailers and Manufacturers, itserves as a single sourcing destination thereby infusing

efficiency of time and cost into the supply chain.

CMAI also recognises excellence in the export and

have contributed towards its welfare by conferring LifeTime Achievement Awards.

    SPRING-SUMMER COLLECTION-2011

Fashion consultant Meher Castelino gets upbeat about the upcoming

51st National Garment Fair organized by the ClothingManufacturers Association of India .

when it comes to a national fashion expo there is no event that can

beat the grandeur, scope and professional standard of the NationalGarment Fair (NGF) organised annually by the Clothing

Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI). The 51st NationalGarment Fair is scheduled from 7 to 9 July, 2010 at the Bombay

Exhibition Centre, Goregaon East, Mumbai. It will be one of thebiggest expos of fashion for exhibitors and buyers. There will be

dedicated areas for lifestyle brands, saris, retail and fashionaccessories, home fashion and state of the art service to help various

business operations. Lounges, displays, artistically created stalls, trend directions, fashion information all will be there under one

roof to enable buyers and apparel labels to strike business deals. For

serious fashion traders and manufacturers, the 51st NGF will be theperfect venue for business opportunities. Here is an event where thefashion trends are set, brands are launched and significant business

deals are struck as thousands of buyers and visitors pour in duringthe three-day expo.

    Much anticipated event

Spread over 25,000 sq mts, NGF houses brands from all over India

who present their latest for the coming festive and summer seasons. The 51st NGF will be eagerly visited by buyers, retailers, buying

agencies, distributors and wholesalers who will be sourcing fromnot only the well known brands but also the new ones, which will

    be launched at the expo.

Considered the biggest fashion event of the year in India, the 51stNGF will have nearly 250 companies showcasing over 400 brands.

Since its inception in 1963 CMAI has held National Garment Fairsregularly and over the last few years the profile of the expo has been

upgraded to match the industry demands of the 21st century fashionworld.

    Top brands under one roof

The National Garment Fair is always spectacular with the mostcolourful stalls created by the top brands in the country. As thevisitors walk through the exhibits they get an idea of how creative

the different companies are in presentating their brands. Each stalltries to outdo the other and the designs and decorations are so

innovative and creative that it is difficult to judge the winners.Prizes for best stall displays are judged by an eminent panel of

experts and the decision is always very difficult since the standardof the products and their exhibitions is of a very high creative level.

Needless to say the final results are the most awaited part of theNGF.

    Perfect launch destination

The National Garment Fairs have become broader to accommodate

allied segments such as Non-Stitched Apparels, Accessories,Lingerie and Sportswear sections. Also, there seems to be a trend

towards using the NGF as an order booking platform once again, instead of just a Branding and PR platform, informs Rahul

Mehta, President, CMAI and the driving force behind the evolutionof the National Garment Fairs. Participation in the NGF is often a

must for most brands and at one stage the exhibitor list had touched

400 participants, which has now averaged to 200-235 exhibitors.

Setting trends in a fashion fair is one of the most important aspects

of any fashion expo and the 51st NGF will be doing just that. Avisitor normally comes to the NGF expecting to see the popular

trends for the coming season, and most brands use it to showcasetheir latest and newest ranges. I would once again stress that the

NGFs are an invaluable opportunity to launch ones brand and tomeet, interact, and communicate with ones customers and should

form a permanent feature of a brands marketing schedule, he adds.

For most brands it is imperative to participate in the NGF, as Mehtastates, I think it is a unique event where the new entrant to the

industry can be exposed to over 10,000 retailers at one shot in aspace of three days, which is otherwise impossible. To an

established brand also, the NGF serves as an unbeatable opportunityto connect and interact with so many of its customers under one roof

    and at one time.

Nearly every first-time exhibitor at the NGF has had somewonderful experiences to relate. Thoresten Allenstein, MD,

Triumph International India, was thrilled to take part in the NGF forthe first time in 2009. This is our first time at the NGF and its a

pleasure to be here. We already have a strong base in the metros and

hence our aim in participating in the NGF was to reach out topotential partners from smaller towns, he had said.

Sanjay Sindhu, GM, Marketing and Sales, Bodycare was delightedto know that there was a dedicated and much bigger zone for

    lingerie section in 2009.

    Seminars and workshops

What makes the NGF a perfect exposition are the interestingseminars and workshops that are held to help the garment industry

to move onto a higher level. Last year there was a very informativeworkshop on Brand Licensing and Merchandising as well as one

on Fashion Franchise and Kids wear Safety and Necessity, which had many participants and experts interacting. Another

encouraging addition to the activities is the display of collections bystudents of design institutes. This gives the budding designers a

chance to show their creativity to the industry and also gives theindustry an idea of the work done by the future designers of India.

So for the students who are moving into the business of fashion, theNGF is the best avenue for interaction with the industry.

    Past successful launches

Nearly every major brand has been launched at the NGF as Mehta

recollects, Almost all major brands in the country in their initialyears have used the NGF platform as a stepping stone or as a launch

pad. Some which come to mind off the cuff are Pepe, Killer,Oxemberg, MSD, UFO, Buffalo, Spykar, Ruff, Gini & Jony,

    Climax, Challenge, etc.

Business is conducted vigorously at NGFs but the exact amount isat times not known since brands do not like to disclose the figures.

It is difficult to assess turnover since not too many participants liketo disclose their business to the organisers, but suffice it to say that

for those who use the NGF as an order booking platform, it usuallytakes care of nearly 50% of their seasons total order booking. The

actual business conducted usually reflects the sentiments at thatpoint in time, and as such this year I am expecting a much higher

turnover compared to 2009, when the sentiments were rathercautious and conservative, he feels.

Not only apparel ready-to-wear brands but even designers have felt

that the NGF is the best platform for the exposure of theircollections. In 2007 haute couture designer Tarun Tahiliani had a

stall at the 48th NGF which proved that high fashion labels also

consider the NGF as a perfect venue for showcasing their creativityand reaching out to a larger segment of consumers around thecountry.

    Glamour quotient

Fashion shows at the 51st NGF will be as exciting as always. We

have had different formats for the fashion shows so it would dependon that but it would normally range between 6 to 12 brands who

will participate on the ramp depending on the format of the shows, informs Mehta. So this time around too the latest fashion trends for

men, women and children will be exhibited on the ramp by topmodels, choreographed by the popular names in the fashion

    business.

As always this year too, the 51st NGF will be one of the grandestevents for the fashion industry in India as apparel brands from all

over the country will be showing their best collections for thecoming season. For the consumers, it will be a great time to watch

and select the most stylish creations from the best labels as theydress up for the coming festive months
