DESCRIPTION
This year’s CMA Awards for Excellence Competition takes on special significance for two reasons. First, the competition is being run on an entirely new basis, and second, it coincides with the Association’s 40th Anniversary.Unlike past competitions when the entry categories were product-based, it has been decided that this year, the core values and standards on which precast concrete products and applications are measured, will serve as a more appropriate basis for assessing competition entries, and the new award categories reflect this.

The Concrete Manufacturers Association, (CMA) thanks all members who submitted entries for this year’s Awards. Besides the new Awards format, this is the first time that the entry book has been published electronically and it provides a valuable reference to the 2012 CMA Awards for Excellence competition.
Although the old format served the Association well, more relevant entry criteria were clearly indicated.
Five new categories, ‘Aesthetics’, ‘Community Involvement’, ‘Innovation’, ‘Sustainability’, and ‘Technical Excellence’ match the aims and objectives of the Association more meaningfully than the product-based system of prior competitions. However, not all past categories have been replaced. ‘Vintage’, has been retained because it highlights some very important aspects of precast concrete such as durability/low maintenance, longevity and excellent weathering.
In addition to the introduction of new catego-ries, the number of awards has been halved from 36 to 18, making a CMA award all the more de-sirable. Furthermore, the thee-tiered structure comprising regional awards and ceremonies, national awards and five trophy awards has been dropped in favour of a single streamlined cer-emony in which six trophies will be awarded to the overall winner of each category. An addi-tional three commendation awards per category will be made providing they demonstrate stan-dards which merit recognition.
As is generally known this year’s competition takes on additional significance because the CMA is celebrating its 40th year, an anniversary which will be celebrated during the Awards presentation gala dinner on November 3rd. Like many of its peers, the fledgling Association had humble beginnings in 1972 as a masonry association, paving being added shortly thereafter. The full story on how
the CMA evolved into what it is today will be covered the November edition of Precast.
Since they were first staged in 1985, the Awards have become the undoubted highlight of the precast concrete industry’s calendar. They pro-vide an excellent vehicle for southern African de-signers and project developers to establish them-selves as trendsetters across several disciplines, and in doing so, to gain national recognition. The CMA is justifiably proud of the superior attributes of precast concrete which is evident in this year’s competition – attributes which are certainly on a par with those of our global compatriots.
A total of 77 entries were submitted this year, a number which reflects the continued strength and diversity of the precast concrete industry. As anticipated ‘Aesthetics’ dominates the new category entries with 29 submissions, followed by ‘Innovation’ and ‘Technical Excellence’ (15 each), ‘Sustainability’ (8) and five each for ‘Community Involvement’ and ‘Vintage’.
The judging for this year’s event took place on August 8th and the results will be announced at the Awards ceremony .

AfriSam is one of the most widely spread cement groups in the southern African region, with operations in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.
The company employs nearly 2 000 staff members and almost 1 000 contractors. It has an annual cement production capacity of 4.6 million tons, which is produced from its six production facilities and distributed to its customers through nine strategically-located cement depots.
AfriSam’s readymix operation can produce almost any concrete mix required by customers from any one of its 40 readymix concrete plants across the region. It also has the capacity to produce in excess of ten million tons of aggregate from its 16 quarries and aggregate operations every year.
Its slagment business unit, located in Vanderbijlpark, has produced slagment over the last 50 years for the construction of major structures, including buildings, dams, bridges, roads and water retaining structures.
AfriSam is a Level 2 Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) contributor and has a 62.5 percent interest in Tanzania-based and listed Tanga Cement Company Limited.
AfriSam (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd was founded as Anglo Alpha Cement Ltd in 1934 and has been producing building materials for the southern African community since then, when its first cement plant was commissioned. The company’s name was changed to Alpha (Pty) Ltd in 1996 and later to Holcim (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd in 2004. Today Afrisam is the leading black-controlled building materials group in southern Africa.
The historic sale of the former Holcim (SA) (Pty) Ltd to the black-led AfriSam Consortium in 2007 resulted in the birth of the new brand, AfriSam.
‘Afri’ refers to its proud African heritage and the sub-Saharan African countries in which it operates. ‘Sam’ derived from the word samente or disamente which means cement in six of South Africa’s official languages. In essence, AfriSam is all about African cement.

Established as the first cement plant in South Africa in 1892, Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) Company Limited celebrated itscentenaryastheJohannesburgStockExchange(JSE)listedcompany on 24 February 2010.
Today, PPC is the leading supplier of cement in southern Africa with eight manufacturing facilities and three milling depots in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, producing almost eight million tons of cement products each year.
PPC is firmly committed to black economic empowerment in South Africa and recognises that meaningful participation by black people in the mainstream economy is essential to sustain the country’s socio-economic objectives.
ppc the brandThe history of this iconic brand is closely linked to the growth and development of South Africa itself. PPC has produced cement for many of the country’s most famous landmarks and construction projects - including the Union Buildings, Gariep Dam, VanStadensRiverBridge, theGautrain,MedupiPowerStation, andsome of the newly built stadiums around the country.
PPC cement brands include the market-leading SureBuild, Botswana’s Botcem, Zimbabwe’s Unicem and PMC as well as OPC, a special-purpose, rapid-hardening cement which guarantees strength and consistency, giving the assurance of successful building results.
ppc’s kambuku way of lifeAt the heart of PPC lies the Kambuku philosophy, a people management system that not only looks to empower PPC’s employees, but also the communities in which it operates. This is why “building the nation” is more than just a slogan; it’s a way of life.
Meaning ‘great tusker’, Kambuku is a Tsonga word that refers to an elephant bull, whose characteris-tics of tenacity and loyalty sum up
the company’s value-based management system. The pas-sion and unconditional commitment of our employees is the catalyst for our growth and transformation. This approach epitomizes our philosophy, which forms the basis of how PPC is managed.
PPC adopted an elephant icon as part of the PPC Cement logo. The icon is a symbol of strength, great stature and dependability with powerful associations of wisdom, maturity, family-orientation and loyalty.
A company with a conscience In keeping with its brand vision of helping to build a strong country for future generations, PPC was socially and environmentally aware many years before it became a global trend and has invested significantly in community upliftment.
To ensure long-term sustainability, we believe in partnering with beneficiaries for three to five years. Being a good corporate citizen is not just about giving money; it is important that beneficiaries are assisted in achieving financial independence and becoming productive membersof societyand this takes time.Jobcreationandskills development are vital in the context of high national unemployment and a number of our initiatives seek to address this issue.
“Everything that PPC does as a brand is about building a strong country for the future. It is founded on the bedrock of this country’s past, and its growth is a mirror of its strong economic advancement and development.” Concludes Richard Tomes,PPC Customer Executive: Cement Sales and Marketing.
