modes of research essays
Informative Mode: simply reports information; objective and “report-like.”
The Tips/Advice Mode: gives suggestions to a broad audience; while persuasive in nature, it is notspecific and focused enough.
Persuasive Mode:very assertive, states a specific position on an issue (not on a broad topic), and also persuadesthe reader to do something specific.

what constitutes reliable information?
Reliable sources can be found in scholarly and professional journals and trade publications.
These sources go through a rigorous process of peer-review in which other academic and professional experts review and evaluate the writing for content, integrity and structure.

what information is considered unreliable?
Search engines (like Google, Yahoo or MSN) are free to anyone with access to the Internet, but there are no review or evaluation standards, and since nearly anyone can publish web pages, the information is not always reliable.
Wikipedia is NOT scholarly site. Although there are some reputable, scholarly contributors, it is an online encyclopedia that anyone (regardless of credentials) can edit.

Have a specific target audience in mind. Be assertive and persuasive. Focus on a specific issue (not just a topic area). Use research as support for your position. Consider the opposition’s points and refute them.
