The Board was set up in 2005 to advise the Department on various matters including academic aspects, industrial relevance, health and safety issues, etc. The members serve a very important function, on a voluntary basis, and help guide the Department in the constantly evolving chemical and materials engineering fields.

Alison Andrew, Chair of C&M Industrial Advisory Board Global Head of Chemicals, Orica plc

Alison Andrew runs Orica’s global chemicals portfolio - a role she was appointed to in December 2012 after running the Chemicals NZ business for 3 years. Prior to joining Orica Alison spent 2 years as CEO of Lexicon Systems. Most of Alison’s career has been with NZ’s two largest companies – Fonterra Cooperative and Fletcher Challenge. Stewart Crichton, Primary Operations Business Development Manager, New Zealand Steel

Stewart works across the Ironmaking and Slabmaking processes at Bluescope Steel’s Glenbrook site. This role is about maximising the value that is generated by the Primary Operations business. It includes coordinating the short term improvement opportunities and the development of the long term strategic facilities plan. Stewart started with technical roles in steelmaking then worked in operational management roles in Ironmaking, Slabmaking and the Finishing Plants. As a member of the Industrial Advisory Board, Stewart’s aim is to be able to contribute back to the engineering school wherever possible, such as providing an industry perspective on graduates and in the development of the safety culture in the Department.

Building, in logistics and supply chain. I have been with Golden Bay for the last 3½ years and am currently working on a variety of projects across the business, ensuring the customer never runs out of cement. What I would like to achieve as an Advisory Board member is to ensure undergraduates working through their degree are made aware of the HS&E requirements in industry. This can be done through independent assessments of laboratory areas or giving guidance to lecturers about what companies are looking for in graduates in the area of HS&E. Hosting the Careers Evening gives both the Advisory Board and students the opportunity to interact and get a sense of the variety of doors a C&M degree opens.

Alice Havill Team Leader, Product Recovery, Lanzatech

Graduated 2007. Leads the research and development into existing and novel separation technologies for the recovery of fermentation bio products, to be applied to the LanzaTech process. Excited to be a part of the advisory board and offering a perspective from the biotechnology industry, which is a rapidly advancing field of engineering

Alex Turnbull Managing Director - Latam at Fonterra

As Managing Director Latin America, Alex Turnbull leads Fonterra’s business in the fast-growing markets of Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. Alex has more than 20 years of experience in the dairy industry, including extensive experience in senior sales, general management and marketing roles within Latin America and New Zealand. Between 2008 and 2012 he led our global paediatrics business. Having spent almost a decade in Brazil, Alex is fluent in Portuguese. Whilst I can’t recall the last time I used JJJ Chen’s famous entropy equation or did anything more than basic maths on my fx-82, I have found the grounding and logic processes that Engineering has taught me to be invaluable in my career with Fonterra. I really want to see the faculty have a smooth transition to the new campus, embrace the ethos of Health and Safety given the economic and health benefits it can bring to companies and their people, and ensure the faculty’s operating framework and education strategy attracts the best students that New Zealand and the world has to offer. I owe a lot to the Chem and Matls Eng Department and I hope to be able to give something back after spending 2 decades in the food industry http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10871607

6.30pm - Wednesday 26 June 2013 Nanotechnology seems to be sneaking into everything around us. We’re told it’s going to make the world a better place, but how much do we know about the use of nanotechnology in our day to day lives - should we be worried about the use of nanotechnology in our food, for instance? Michelle will uncover some of the mystery behind this new science called nanotechnology, and how much of what sounds like science fiction may already be science fact. Michelle Dickinson is a nanotechnologist who has recently moved from a consulting position in industry to the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland. Her work involves the use of nanotechnology in medical and technology research. Michelle is also a science advisor for TV3 and a contributor to Green Ideas Magazine. Her passion is to encourage environmentally sustainable living through engineering design – when she is not in her research lab you can catch her cycling around the city, or tending to her permaculture garden. Seminar by Professor Mark Taylor – Note start time: 6:00pm on 24th July 2013. The time for the seminar on 24th July 2013 was incorrectly given in the previous C&M News. The correct start time is 6:00pm. Professor Mark Taylor, Director of the "Materials Accelerator" will present a seminar entitled "Demand and Engagement model for Materials and Manufacturing research in NZ". The event is being hosted by the Society of Materials New Zealand Incorporated (SMNZI) Date: 24th July Time: 6-7pm Venue: Engineering Building 403.403 For catering purposes please register attendance at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6025114279 Geran Zhang 2010, now doing PhD at MIT, Cambridge

Photo taken on 20 June 2013 when Geran returned to visit the Department. From the left, Ashvin Thambyah, Geran Zhang, Neil Broom, and John Chen.

Geran is doing a PhD at MIT, Cambridge, in the Biomolecular Mateirals Group, Materials Science and Engineering Department. In 2011, “Geran Zhang has chosen to study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was selected for one of only ten Fulbright Ministry of Research, Science and Technology Graduate Awards available across New Zealand, but he declined as his programme will be fully funded by MIT.” according to Engineering Alumni News, No 24, May 2011. Geran tells me that "Our lab uses genetically modified bacteriophage as a template to synthesis nanomaterials and nanocomposites for applications in energy and medicine. To get a bacteriophage that we use as a template, we genetically modify the coat protein on the virus to give it certain surface properties. Usually, we look for an amino acid sequence with affinity for a specific material by using a process called biopanning. Most of my work is focused on making and testing electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries: designing new nanostructures to enable new or improve current lithium-ion chemistries, looking at more fundamental materials chemistry issues and how they affect battery performance. Most of the everyday

work involves materials synthesis (mostly by using a bacteriophage biotemplate or other wet-chemistry techniques) and characterization (TEM, SEM, XPS, XRD, ICP-AES, etc), battery assembly and characterization (GC, CV, etc). The work is very interdisciplinary and broad. I am also thinking about materials for other device applications, mostly in the energy field." Ting MeeLing C&M 2000 MeeLing recently took a career path change. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Teaching at AUT last year. She is now back in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, teaching at a local college in a diploma course in early childhood education. Chris Short C&M 2003

C&M Class of 1988

The class of 1988 had a 20-year reunion in 2009. Steve Levien, now at Tooheys at Lion Nathan, tells me that they have had an annual get together in Aussie every year since then. He is planning on organising a get together in the next few months. If interested, please let me know and I can put you in contact with Steve. Steve is also suggesting that next year is 25 years after graduation. Would people in the class of 1988 be interested in a catch up in NZ? Reunion, C&M Class of 1969 In the previous issue, I reported on the forthcoming reunion of the C&M Class of 1969 in Auckland, 17-20 February 2014. I also included a photo taken during the reunion in Fiskebäckskil on Skafto Island, Sweden in 2010. Some of you might have noticed that all the C&M class of 1969 were wearing similar T-shirts. You might be interested to know that the T-shirts sported the following:
