Multiple discs v Single disc.There are several significant advantages of a smaller diameter, multiple

disc clutch over a larger diameter single disc unit.

Multi disc clutch advantages:

1. Increase the amount of torque able to be transmitted.

2. Decrease the pedal effort to operate the clutch.

3. Decrease the weight of the clutch

4. Decrease the M.O.I. (Moment of Inertia) of the clutch.

The amount of torque that a clutch transmits is critical to the ultimate

performance of a vehicle.

Multi disc clutches increase the available torque capacity by 2 for twin

disc and 3 for triple disc.

Torque Capacity is affected by 4 factors:1. Decreasing the diameter reduces torque capacity.

2. A smaller diameter clutch has a smaller diaphragm, which

usually means a lower clamping force

3. Adding a second clutch disc doubles the torque capacity.

4. Increasing the coefficient of friction of the clutch discs increases

the torque capacity.

5. If the multi disc clutch is correctly designed and engineered, the

losses from the smaller diameter and lower clamp force are much

less than the gain in coefficient of friction and extra disc(s) giving

the torque increase.Examples:

Pedal EffortSmaller diaphragms used in multi disc clutches usually require less

pedal effort to disengage the clutch. This is in direct contrast to a

larger single disc clutch which has a larger diaphragm with heavier

pedal effort

Decreased WeightThe above examples clearly show the weight relationship between

multi disc and single disc clutches.

MOI (Moment of Inertia)Lower weight means less inertia has to be overcome to spin the

clutch. This means less engine power is needed to turn the clutch. The

net effect is the vehicle is able to accelerate faster.

Lower weight also means that the clutch discs will not continue

to spin on for as long and allow faster shifting. The net result again

is faster acceleration and less time when there is no power being

transmitted to the wheels.

moiMoment of Inertia

Decreased WeightThe advantage of decreased weight is that you will achieve an

incremental improvement in your vehicles power to weight ratio. The

smaller diameter clutch is lighter even though an intermediate plate

and extra clutch disc is added. This is because the effect of the weight

decreases dramatically as the diameter gets smaller. i.e. the weight is

proportional to the radius squared. If the radius is halved the weight

is decreased 4 times.

The advantages of lowering the Moment of Inertia of a clutch

assembly are two fold. Firstly there is less inertia required to spin the

clutch assembly therefore requiring less engine power. The net effect

is the vehicle is able to accelerate faster.

The Moment of Inertia of a non-point

object is calculated by the formula:

I = k x R2 x M (measured in kg m2)

Where:

M is the mass

R is the radius of the object from the

center of mass

k is a dimensionless constant called

the inertia constant that varies

with the geometry of the object in

consideration.

For example k = 1 for a thin-walled

cylinder around its center or k = ½

for a solid disc around its center.

Moment of Inertia

The second is that the clutch discs will not continue to “spin on” for

as long and therefore enable gear changes to happen quicker. The net

result again is faster acceleration and less time when there is no power

being transmitted to the wheels.

The Moment of Inertia is a measure of an object’s resistance to changes

in its rotation rate. The symbol ‘I’ is used to refer to the Moment of

Inertia.

The Moment of Inertia is of particular interest with clutches and

flywheels because to accelerate a vehicle we need to overcome the

vehicles resistance to acceleration or its Moment of Inertia. Reducing

the Moment of Inertia of the Clutch Kit has the same effect as adding

power to the engine, enabling it to accelerate more quickly.

It is important to note that the Moment of Inertia is proportional to

the Radius squared. So a small change in the Radius or Diameter of a

clutch has a dramatic effect on the Moment of Inertia. For example an

increase in Diameter of 40% i.e. from 200mm to 280mm approximately

equates to a doubling of in the Moment of Inertia or a doubling of the

resistance to changing the rotation rate or a doubling of the power

required to accelerate this clutch.

CLAMP LOADClamp Load V’s TORQUE CAPACITY

“With this in mind, Mantic performance clutches have torque capacity ratings so

you can match it accurately to your vehicles maximum engine torque capacity.

Next time someone tries to tell you their cover assemblies have more Clamp

Load, ask them what the maximum torque capacity is, then do the comparison

before deciding which clutch better suits your vehicle”.

The most widely misunderstood characteristic of a clutch cover

assembly is the Clamp Load. Clutch cover assemblies have been

rated by Clamp Load since their invention. The Clamp Load is one

of the main factors influencing how much torque can be transmitted

by a clutch. But there are other factors that also affect the torque

capacity and these can be overlooked when selecting a clutch for a

vehicle.

The fundamental definitions of Clamp Load and Torque Capacity are:

Clamp Load – The load exerted by the diaphragm to clamp the clutch

disc between the pressure plate and the flywheel.

Torque Capacity – The load exerted by the diaphragm to clamp the

Clutch disc between the pressure plate and the flywheel multiplied by the

coefficient of friction multiplied by the mean effective radius multiplied by

the number of clutch discs.

It is possible to have two cover assemblies with the same Clamp

Load but for the clutch to have different torque capacities due

to differences in the coefficient of friction, the inside and outside

diameters of the clutch disc or the number of clutch discs.

Traditionally clutches have been sized by using comparative measures,

i.e. previously the owner had a 10”clutch with 650kg Clamp Load.

Now they are looking for more capacity, for example 20% more

so they assume they need a 10” clutch with approximately 650 x

1.2 = 780kg of clamp. This is a reasonable argument if the friction

coefficient, the diameters and the number of discs are identical but

this is not always the case.

A major reason for this method of measurement has been that

without an ability to test all calculations are just that – calculations.

Mantic uses figures that mean something, because “We have the

only clutch dynamometer in Australia” which allows us to accurately

measure torque capacity.

The torque capacity of a single disc clutch:

In the final analysis it is far more important to know how much torque

can be transmitted by a clutch than knowing the Clamp Load. Engines

are rated in horsepower or kilowatts and torque, not kilograms.

1. Increased Torque CapacityThe advantage of increased Torque Capacity is that more power/

torque can be transmitted through the clutch. Torque Capacity

is calculated by multiplying the load exerted by the diaphragm to

clamp the clutch disc between the pressure plate and the flywheel

multiplied by the coefficient of friction multiplied by the radius of

gyration multiplied by the number of clutch discs.

I.e. Torque Capacity = Clamp Load x Coef. of Friction x

Mean effective radius x No. of Clutch Discs.

A smaller clutch has a smaller mean effective radius and a smaller

diaphragm which usually also means a lower clamping force, so these

two features will have the effect of reducing the Torque Capacity.

However these two features do not reduce the capacity by the same

amount as the extra clutch disc increases the Torque Capacity. The

net result is an increased Torque Capacity.

Hydraulics Actuation.Hydraulic release systems give greater flexibility than cable or

mechanical mechanisms. The master cylinder is mounted on the

firewall or can be incorporated in the pedal and is connected

to the slave cylinder via a flexible hose. Flexible hoses are used

to accommodate any relative movement between the body and

engine/transmission. The concentric slave cylinder eliminates the

need for a clutch release lever by combining the release bearing

and slave cylinder on the gear box front bearing retainer. As the

friction material on the driven disc wears, the release mechanism is

repositioned forcing the excess fluid to the master cylinder reservoir.

By design, the efficiency of the release system is achieved by a small

bore diameter master cylinder with a larger bore slave cylinder.

There are two types of master cylinder:

1.Compensating Port Design

When the clutch pedal is not in use the piston in the master cylinder

exposes a small hole to the reservoir. As the clutch pedal is depressed,

the seal/cup passes the compensating hole effectively closing the port,

and then the remaining fluid actuates the slave cylinder.

2.Centre Valve Design

When the clutch pedal is not in use, the piston in the master cylinder

retracts to open the port in the base of the cylinder. As the clutch

pedal is depressed, the centre valve is closed and the remaining fluid

actuates the slave cylinder.

Direct fit kits are supplied with the correct bearing or concentric slave

cylinder designed for use with the OE clutch master cylinder.

Cover Assemblies with the MOI Plus feature have material removed around the

outside diameter of the Cover, Pressure Plate and Intermediate Plates. This has two

benefits being reduction of weight and reduction of MOI without any detrimental

effect to the strength of the Clutch. The total benefit is over 10% reduction in MOI.

The top of the Mantic range features an even lower MOI to maximize

your vehicle performance.

Cover Assemblies with the MOI Plus feature have material removed

around the outside diameter of the Cover, Pressure Plate, and

Intermediate Plates.

This feature has two performance benefits, further reduction of mass

and MOI without any detrimental effect to the strength of the clutch.

The total performance gain is more than a 10% reduction in MOI over

the standard series.

Direct Fitment: Mantic 9000 & 7000 series with MOI Plus are also available with

popular vehicle “direct fit” capability. This is a complete assembly

ready to replace the standard clutch (or any other) in a popular

range of performance vehicles.

ER2ER² new design concept

Cover Assemblies with the Patented* ER2 Groove Design feature

have a unique groove pattern CNC machined on the friction face

of the Pressure Plate. The groove has been specifically designed to

increase the Mean Effective Radius of the pressure plate and assist in

heat removal. The increase in the Mean Effective Radius of the Cover

Assembly gives an increase in Torque Capacity by up to 8%. Mean

Effective Radius is directly proportional to Torque capacity.

By adding the groove to the Pressure Plate, the inside radius of the

friction face has effectively been increased. The first 5/16 inches of

the pressure plate has all but been removed and added to this, there

is progressively less material removed as the radius increases. The

net effect of this is to move the effective inside radius further out.

When comparing the Mean Effective Radius (Rm) of the ER2 version

to the non ER2 version you can see the ER2 version is further out.

This increases the Torque Capacity of the clutch. Torque Capacity is

directly related to Rm.

The formula for calculating the Torque is: Torque = Force x Distance or T = F x Rm

For a Clutch the Force is dependant on the Coefficient of Friction: Force = Coefficient of Friction x Clamp Load or F = µ x N

(Note there are 2 friction faces so for a Clutch F = 2 x µ x N)

Torque Capacity is also increased by 8%. Using Mantic’s in house Dynamometer the Torque capacity was measured for a Non ER² Pressure Plate

vs an ER2 Pressure Plate.

Mantic Street with the Patented* ER² designed pressure

plate is a Clutch Kit specifically designed for the

performance market.

Capable of transmitting greater than 60% more torque than a standard

Clutch Kit making it suitable for high performance vehicles. This overall

Torque Capacity increase has been achieved by higher Clamp Loads,

increased Mean Effective Radius of the friction area, better cooling of

the pressure plate and higher coefficient of friction materials on the

Clutch disc. These design innovations directly equate to higher Torque

capacity.

• Patented* Pressure Plate ER² design. The groove design enhances

the performance in 2 ways. Firstly it increases the Torque Capacity

of the Cover Assembly by up to 8% and secondly it assists with

cooling which in-turn enables the friction material to operate at

lower temperatures and therefore at a higher coefficient of friction.

Again this enhances the torque capacity of the clutch. High strength

anti burst SG Iron material used for the Pressure Plate. Performance

vehicles typically operate at higher RPM than standard vehicles. To

minimise the possibility of failure of the pressure plate at these high

RPMs it has been manufactured from SG or Spheroidal Graphite Iron

not the standard Grey Cast Iron.

• By altering the pivot point of the pressure plate higher Clamp Loads

have been achieved. This directly equates to higher Torque capacity.

Increased drive strap strength to cater for heavier down shifting.

During normal driving the Straps are in tension and can cope with far

more force.

• However during down shifting heavy compressive loads can be

imparted. When this happens the straps can buckle. This is the

reason for the higher strength design drive straps.

• Twin material Clutch disc. The Clutch disc has an organic facing

ring in contact with the ER2 Pressure Plate and a segmented

cerametallic facing on the Flywheel side. The Cerametallic material

has a higher coefficient of friction. This increases the Torque

capacity of the clutch.

• Increased Clutch disc Torque Capacity. The Clutch disc has been

“Up Sprung” to increase its Torque Capacity. Heavy duty Damper

springs have replaced the standard springs so that the increased

Torque Capacity of the Cover Assembly can be transmitted through

the Clutch disc without the springs bottoming out.*Patent N0 2004100497

• The Cover assembly and Clutch disc are designed as a matched pair.

In order to get the most out of a Cover Assembly the Clutch disc

compressed thickness must be matched to the Cover Assembly

due to the variation of Clamp Load as the Clutch disc thickness

varies. Mantic Clutch discs and Cover Assemblies have been made

to the optimum set up position to obtain the highest Clamp Load

through the life of the Clutch.

• Decorative and corrosion resistant Cover Assembly finish,

maintains a bright clean finish that is more acceptable to the

customer than the standard raw metal finish.

Mantic 4WD with Patented* ER² Groove DesignThe Mantic 4WD Clutch kit has a number of features which make the

product distinctly new. The Clutch Kit comprises of a Cover Assembly,

Clutch disc and Release Bearing. The kit itself is designed with offroad

drivers in mind.

The cover assembly’s pressure plate is manufactured from Spheroidal

Graphite casting material which has a yield strength 300% higher than

standard castings. The materials microstructure also improves heat

dispersion. The cover assembly also incorporates greater Clamp Load

than a standard cover assembly. This translates to more torque transfer.

This casting material has not been used in this application previously

and is especially useful in 4WD applications where higher clutch

operating temperatures and load transfer are experienced and required

i.e. Purposeful clutch system slipping for off road situations, towing and

maneuvering external vehicle payloads like trailers and caravans.

The clutch kit’s clutch disc has a unique flywheel side friction

material. The Aramide friction material exhibits 50% less wear than a

conventional clutch disc’s friction material. This material also reduces

the effects of fade. Fade is the decline in the clutch system’s ability to

transmit torque as the operating temperature increases. This feature

in combination with the previously mentioned microstructure of

spheroidal graphite casting allows the clutch kit to dissipate heat far

more effectively, allowing the clutch to run cooler for longer.

The aramide friction material is arranged on the flywheel side of the

clutch disc in a segmented fashion. The arrangement of the geometric

form of each of the segments increases the Mean Effective Radius

(Rm) of the clutch disc.

By increasing the Rm the clutch the transmittable torque increases.

The Patented* pressure plate with ER² grooves are precision

machined with CAD/CAM technology. The design enhances the

performance in 2 ways. Firstly it increases the Torque Capacity of

the Cover Assembly by up to 8% and secondly it assists with cooling

which in-turn enables the friction material to operate at lower

temperatures and therefore at a higher coefficient of friction.

Again this enhances the torque capacity of the clutch.

Mantic 9000 SeriesMantic 9000 series clutches are twin disc, 9” (225mm) diameter

modular clutches that are designed for high performance road

cars or track use. Mass is critical for a high performance clutch to

produce the expected level of performance, and Mantic offers two

levels of low mass clutches to allow you to optimize your vehicle

performance to your personal driving style. They offer up to 1010 ft

lbs (1365nm) of torque drive capability*.

Mantic 9000 series are low MOI (Moment of Inertia) twin disc

clutches that offer a level of performance not only superior to a

single disc unit, but also allow you to select options that best suit

you. All 9000 series MOI are made with premium quality materials

designed to perform and last the distance.

The key to the 9000 series is the street drivability of the Sprung Street

Cerametallic discs. These suit high performance engines and enthusiastic

driving styles, while allowing excellent drivability when needed.

Low pedal effort is another bonus from the 9000 series MOI.

Noise is a common problem on multiple disc clutches when used in

street applications. Mantic 9000 series features a unique spring clip

system on the intermediate plate to remove noise from the clutch. (See

9000 series MOI pictures above).

Rigid Street Cerametallic:

This is a rigid, non sprung centre, but with a cushioned button type disc

that allows for a harder driving style with the best compromise for pure

performance and drivability.

Rigid Track Paddle:

The solid centre, non cushioned metallic disc is the highest level of the

Mantic 9000 series.

Designed for pure performance, this clutch offers few compromises.

Engagement is sudden, limiting the chance of slippage.

It is recommended for track use only.

Sprung Street Organic:

This disc has a sprung hub with organic facings. It offers a significant

performance capability gain over standard, with OEM drivability. Ideal

for normally aspirated engines or where drivability is a primary

requirement. (e.g. daily driver / multiple drivers)

Multi Rate Disc Hubs:

This feature allows the disc spline to have a controlled movement

separate from the remainder of the disc. Used in some applications to

further refine the N.V.H. (Noise Vibration Harshness) levels.

The Mantic 7000 series is a 7.25” (184mm) diameter racing clutch,

available in twin and triple disc configuration. It offers up to 948ft lbs

(1330Nm)* of torque drive, with low MOI (Moment of Inertia) for

superior track performance.

The 7000 series come with metallic solid centre clutch discs. The

discs are available with all popular spline sizes. For exact spline sizes

Aramide: Is a high strength, good impact resistance material with good abrasion resistance and

compressive strength. It is usually used as fibre reinforcement for polymer matrix composites.

Bearing: Clutch thrust (release) bearing. O.E.(Original Equipment) type fitment. No hydraulics.

Bearing: Radial Face: Release bearing with rolled type face rather than flat face where bearing

contacts the diaphragm. No hydraulics.

Clamp: The amount of pressure applied to the Clutch disc when the clutch is fully engaged.

(Refer to Clamp vs. Torque)

Clutch Cover Assembly: The cover assembly is the unit that bolts directly to the flywheel. Its

purpose is to apply pressure to the clutch disc allowing the drivetrain to engage and provide

torque through the transmission to the wheels.

Clutch Disc: The driven disc(s) that transfer the torque drive to the transmission.

Coefficient of friction: (µ) The measured resistance that occurs between two surfaces.

Concentric Slave Cylinder: (CSC) Hydraulic release bearing mounted to the front of the gearbox

inside the bell housing. (Usually an O.E. component) .

(The CSC bolts directly to the front of the gearbox inside the bell housing.)

Cushion: Cushion is the space (gap) between the two surface areas of the clutch disc. This is

used in Mantic Street, Mantic 4WD and in Mantic 9000 Series Cerametallic discs.

Dampening: The springs in the clutch disc which improves NVH and Modulation.

Diaphragm: The spring diaphragm that enables the clutch to pivot on the fulcrum point, to

release and engage the clutch. Mantic use chrome vanadium diaphragms springs in all units.

Direct Fit: Complete assembly to replace standard or existing clutch. Complete to fit with no

modifications required.

Disengaged: Where the clutch spring diaphragm is activated to allow the clutch cover to release

the clutch disc from driving the vehicle.

Drivability: The “feel” and “engagement” action of the clutch. (Also refer “Modulation”)

Driveline NVH: Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) while not a major factor on the track,

are a serious consideration for the road. Sprung and cushioned discs are used to control NVH.

(Refer “Drivability” and “Modulation)

Durability: Refers to the operational life of the clutch. Generally speaking, the smaller diameter

and number of discs dictate the service life. More discs and larger diameter offer potentially

longer life, where a smaller, lighter clutch with low MMOI offers greater performance.

Dynamic Testing: Mantic clutches are dynamically tested on the only clutch dynamometer in

Australia.

Engaged: Where the clutch pedal is in the static position, allowing the clutch to drive the vehicle.

Fade: Fade occurs when the friction material exceeds its designed temperature tolerance.

Friction: Transmits torque through surface friction between the faces of the clutch. (I.e. The

surface contact of the clutch disc(s) between the clutch cover and flywheel surface)

Friction Material: “Cerametallic”, where the ceramic friction material is bonded to a backing

plate, allowing cushioning between the segments to improve modulation, while increasing torque

drive.

Heat: The enemy of the clutch. Any clutch will perform better the lower temperature it is able to

operate at. Heat is generated by engagement / disengagement of the clutch, and driver induced

slippage. It relies on absorption by the clutch cover and flywheel to remain within operating

temperatures.The more mass in the clutch and flywheel assembly, the greater the amount of

heat that can be absorbed.

Intermediate plate: The plate that separates the clutch discs in a multiple disc assembly. Twin

plates have one, triple discs have two.

MOI: The Moment of Inertia measures the ability of the clutch and flywheel assembly to resist

changes in rotational speed about a specific axis. The larger the Moment of Inertia (number),

the smaller the angular acceleration about that axis is for a given torque. (That is, the slower

the flywheel will accelerate for a given torque amount.) Low MOI allows faster gear shifts, and

improved engine response.

Mean Effective Radius: The effective radius of the friction surface used to calculate torque

capacity.

Modular: Refers to the common nature of the clutch assembly, where two and three disc

clutches with the same diameter share common parts.

Modulation: The action of the “engagement” of the clutch. Modulation can be harsh where either

a solid centre disc is used, or a non cushioned disc(s) are fitted. Harsh engagement is where the

pedal movement between engaged and disengaged is minimal (sudden).

Multi Rate Hub: Multi piece hub used to reduce Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH).

Most popular in high-compression applications such as diesel engines. High compression

engines generate a higher level of noise (rattles), vibration (often felt through the gearstick)

and harshness (general cabin noise etc) at idle.

Pedal Effort: The amount of pressure (Kg’s/Lbs) required to depress the clutch pedal and allow

the clutch to release. (Also see release effort)

P.C.D: Pitch Circle Diameter. (Usually measured in millimeters) For a 4- or 6-bolt car, this

measurement is merely the distance between the centers of two diametrically opposite bolts.

For a 3 or 5-bolt pattern: draw a line between any two neighboring bolts, and draw a line from

the midpoint of this line to the opposite bolt. Repeat with a different set of three bolts, and the

two long lines will cross in the center, thereby making the distance between this intersection and

the center of a bolt the radius of the bolt circle.

Pressure Plate: This is the plate underneath the machined cover that clamps the clutch disc.

Push Type Clutch: Where the clutch diaphragm is activated by the bearing “pushing” on the spring

diaphragm to disengage the clutch.

Release Bearing: The bearing that pushes on the diaphragm to enable the clutch to release. In

certain applications, a Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) is used instead of a bearing and throwout

lever system.

Release Effort: The amount of pressure (Kg’s / Lbs) required to depress the diaphragm to allow

the clutch to release. (Also see pedal effort)

Slippage: The point that the clutch begins to be unable to hold the torque drive from the engine.

Spline: The drive spline inside the Clutch disc hub. Measured by the number of teeth and the

outside diameter of the shaft. Some splines are nominally the same, but have different pitch on

the teeth.

Sprung centre: Dampening within the hub of the clutch disc, usually by the addition of heavy duty

springs to the centre of the disc. This reduces the “shock” on the transmission when changing

gears, and allows smoother driving.

Torque drive capacity: This is the amount of engine torque that the clutch

will transmit through the drive line.
