It’s Poultry Chain Time! Poultry Chain ordering is available on 4-H Online. This year the
chicks will be Hyline Browns. These brown egg producers are
large bodied, docile birds. The fee is $25 per participant. Each
order will receive up to 20 birds. The males are .50 each.
Orders are due on 4-H Online by March 5. The target delivery
date is April 4, but this date is subject to change. Call the office
if you have any questions. 870-

Attention- There is a required
training on poultry husbandry
and biosecurity for all Poultry
Chain participants. You must
pre-register for this training. The date for this training is
March 8, at HOPE at the UACCH Campus, Hempstead Hall,
6pm. We are partnering with Hempstead County this year. If
you are unable to attend this location, there will also be one
at the Kirby Ag Building on March 6, 6pm.

The Livestock Leadership Academy will be held March 22-24
at the 4-H Center in Ferndale. It is limited to senior (ages 14-
19) 4-H’ers. We will focus on team building skills (ExCEL
program), Farm to Table (tour farms and businesses), and
more. The cost is $85. Registration is open on 4HOnline and
will close Thursday, March 1.

Cloverbud Record Books and 4-H Stories Just a reminder . . . There’s still time to get in your Cloverbud
record books or write your 4-H story (for 1st year members)
in order to get an invitation to the 4-H Banquet. Deadline is
March 1.
National SeaPerch Challenge Information
SeaPerch Challenge will be March 31 at the Ferndale 4-H Center.
Registration for the event is due March 14. Registration is $40 per
team, which includes lunch and a t-shirt. Teams must purchase a kit to
build their robot. Replicas of the competition field may be purchased
and constructed for practicing. Teams must have access to a pool as
this is an underwater robot activity.
If you/your team are interested, I would suggest purchasing the kit
and beginning construction NOW. Scholarships/monetary assistance may be available. Call 870-

Arkansas 4-H Roping Championship
This event will be at Saline County Fairgrounds, Benton, AR, March
16, 7:00 pm.
For more information about the event, contact Jimmy Driggers,
Garland County Extension Agent: 501-282-1036. For information
regarding county eligibility, contact the Howard County office, 870-845-
7517.
4-H Poster Art Contest The Poster Art Contest is open to all 4-H members 9-19. The theme is “Go Wild” with
4-H! Dimensions should be 14” x 22” and may be either horizontal or vertical. Art may
be any medium - watercolor, ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oils or collage. Art must
NOT contain any copyrighted material, no three-dimensional objects either. Deadline
to enter is Friday, May 4. Top 10 winners will receive certificates and be presented at
District O-Rama.
Ross Photography Contest Ross Photography exhibits scenes of Arkansas. Each 4-Her may submit 4
photos, one in each category: color living, color non-living, black and white
living, and black and white non-living (living category intended for people
and animals, photos that are strictly plants are considered non-living).
Four county winners are selected, one in each category. Photos must be
taken within the contest year - July 2017- June 2018. Cash prizes for
winners. All photos must be submitted digitally, entry deadline is June 1. If you are interested,
contact the office 870-845-7517.
Attention senior 4-H members: Howard County 4-H Foundation scholarship forms are due March 1. If you would like an application, please call the office. 870-845-7517.
County Scholarship Applications Available
Opportunity Spotlight Each month, we will be spotlighting 4-H State or National events and other
opportunities available to qualified members. This month’s spotlight: The
Teen Star Program/Ambassador Program.
The Arkansas 4-H Teen Star Program is a recognition program for outstanding
achievement in the areas of 4-H projects and activities, leadership, and
community service. You must be 15 years old to apply for Teen Star recognition. If you would like
an application, please come by the office. We’ll be happy to assist you! Applications are due
March 1.
The Arkansas 4-H Ambassador program is for individuals who enjoy promoting 4-H across the
state. Ambassadors may be used in the following ways: assist with statewide 4-H programs such as
Teen Leader Conference, assist with county 4-H programs, promote 4-H during
every opportunity, represent 4-H at various activities such as fairs, donor events,
and awards programs. Does this sound like something you would like to do? 4-
Hers interested in applying must be Teen Stars and must not turn 19 before or
during the calendar year in which they application is submitted. Applications are
due March 1.

Livestock Judging Contests There are several upcoming livestock judging contests. If you are training a team for the state 4-H
livestock judging contest, these are great contests to attend to help teach and prepare your team.
See below for dates and check the calendar on www.judgingcard.com. There are currently no
flyers for the below listed contests at this time.

4-H State O-Rama Photography Contest
“Go Wild!” is also the theme for this year’s 4-H State O-Rama Photography
competition. Be creative, unconventional, experimental . . . use your own
interpretation of WILD! Friday, July 6 is the entry deadline. Photographs should be
taken specifically for this activity. Post-processing with image editing software like
Adobe Photoshop is permitted; however, photos that exhibit noticeable
manipulation rarely score well. Judges typically appreciate photos with solid
composition, correct exposure, accurate colors, and a unique perspective.
If you are interested, contact the office 870-845-7517 and ask for the “4-H Photography
Guidelines.”
Star (Quad) County Camp
Plans are currently underway for the 2087 Star County
Camp. The camp will be held at the Timber Ridge Lodge in
Amity on July 17-19. Please note this date change! Camp
registration fee should be about the same; however, it will
be finalized in the next newsletter. More information to
come! Mark your calendar!
Commodity Contests Mark your calendar for the upcoming 4-H Food Commodity Contests. The 4-H Bread
and Cookie contest will be held on Monday, February 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the EH
Center in Nashville. Participants will bring their entries and recipe (already baked) and
drop off for judging.
The Egg Preparation/Dairy Foods contest will be held Monday, March 12 at 6:00
p.m. Again, you will bring your main dish or party idea and recipe (already prepared)
for the judging.
Be on the lookout for detailed instructions regarding all these contests. It will come as one mail out!
Call the office if you need assistance in finding recipes or for questions regarding any of these contests.
Camp Leadership Camp Leadership applications are due March 12. This is a fantastic
leadership opportunity for 4-H members ages 13-19. The camp will be held
April 6 & 7 at the Arkansas 4-H Center in Ferndale, just outside of Little
Rock. The Howard County 4-H Foundation will help with registration fees for
this camp. If you are interested, please let the office know.
