Hassayampa 4-H Club By Dana Monnett Since the beginning of the 4H year in August, the Hassayampa 4H Club has been busy with many activities. Currently, the club is involved in Operation Christmas Child by Samaritan’s Purse. This project donates to underprivileged children by filling boxes with toys and needed items such as socks, washcloths, etc., and a personal note and picture if so desired. To raise money for their donation efforts, Hassayampa 4H Club will hold a bake sale at Safeway this Friday (Oct. 30) from 2 to 6 p.m. Boxes will be available for anyone who wishes to participate on their own. In September the club participated in the 44th Annual Cattleman Grower’s Association Barbecue and Calf Sale in Peeple’s Valley at Maughn Ranch. They helped as volunteers serving meals and participated in a horse-judging opportunity. The Yavapai County Horse Show was held Sept. 25 at Yavapai Downs. Returning 2008 4H Champion Naomi Monnett and her paint horse Apache placed first in 4H Showmanship Juniors, second on Open Halter Geldings, and 4H Equitation, third in 4H Western Pleasure and fifth in Open Equitation and Western Pleasure. Also returning, Adrianna Pritchard Sportmanship Champion for 2008 riding Daisy won the following 4H classes: second in Showmanship and Western Pleasure. During Congress Day’s festivities 4H members Justin and Adrianna Pritchard, Heather Carroll and family, Naomi Monnett and others had fun marching in the parade with their club banner. At the October business meeting, 4H bookmarks were made. The Wickenburg Public Library has made these available as a free gift from the club. Officers worked on their leadership skills by finalizing an annual calendar of events approved by club members. Bailey Gonzales was elected vice president. Bailey brings past 4H experience to the Hassayampa 4H Club as a junior leader for the Chino Valley club. She is an honor roll student at Wickenburg High School and is active in the 4H horse program, Arizona High School Rodeo Assoc., and is Cave Creek PRCA Rodeo Queen. The rabbit project group recently participated in the 4-H Small Stock Field Day in Prescott. At this function they learned how to show their animal, acquired judging skills, and played an educational game called Rabbit Quiz Bowl. Elisabeth Skaggs is a first year 4Her in the rabbit project. She entered the Gila County Fair for her first show. She won three awards, placing first in Showmanship, Best in Junior Showmanship, and Best of Show.
